Full statement by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) on allegations of assaults, abductions, and violations of human rights and freedoms:

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) is the National Human Rights Institution for Zimbabwe. The ZHRC has the mandate to protect, promote and enforce human rights and freedoms.
In terms of Section 243(1)(c) and (f) of the Constitution, the ZHRC has the power, respectively to monitor, assess and ensure the observance of human rights and freedoms; and investigate the conduct of any authority or person whenever allegations of violations of the human rights and freedoms enshrined in the Declaration of Rights are made.
In furthering this mandate, the ZHRC took note, with concern, of the incidences involving reports of torture, assaults, abductions, and violations of various human rights and freedoms, through its media monitoring process and initiated investigations, which are still underway.
Among the cases being investigated are the cases of Jameson Timba and 78 (seventy-eight) others who were allegedly arrested under questionable circumstances, tortured and assaulted by officers of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on the 16th of June 2024, at a private residence at No. 6 Downie Road Strathaven, Avondale West, in Harare.
The ZHRC further took note of the alleged arrest under unclear circumstances, and assault on members of the Zimbabwe National Students’ Union (ZINASU) at the ZESA Training Centre in Harare on the 24th of July by officers of the ZRP.
In terms of Section 243 (1) (e) of the Constitution, the ZHRC has the mandate to protect the public against the abuse of power and maladministration by the State, public institutions, and officers of those institutions.
Thus, the ZHRC condemns any acts of abuse of power by State agencies, and in this case seeks to establish the facts and circumstances involved in these allegations with a view to securing, in terms of its mandate in section 243(1) (g) of the Constitution; appropriates redress in the event that human rights were violated.
Additionally, the ZHRC also noted the alleged abduction of Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, Rodney Gwenzi and Vusumuzi Moyo by unknown perpetrators, from an airplane at Robert Mugabe International Airport on 31 July 2024, and subsequent torture. The perpetrators of these heinous acts if proven, need to be identified and prosecuted.
In light of the aforementioned, the alleged assaults, abductions, and human rights violations pose an affront to the right to human dignity (Section 51), the rights to personal security (Section 52), freedom from torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment (Section 53), the right to personal liberty), political rights (Section 67) freedom of assembly and association (section 58) and the rights of children (section 81).
The respect of human rights and freedoms helps the people of Zimbabwe to live together peacefully and ensures humane treatment for all society members, and promotes the prosperity that we all desire.
While investigations into the alleged violations are underway, the ZHRC condemns all and any acts of heavy-handedness and violence by State and non-state actors alike and wishes to remind and encourage all State, private institutions and individuals to respect and protect human rights and freedoms. 
Further, the ZHRC emphasises that the enforcement of any laws can and must be done with due respect to human rights and freedoms.
The law has ample provision for law enforcement without recourse or need to undermine fundamental freedoms.
Law enforcers must remember that they must arrest only when they hold reasonable suspicion of the commission of an actual crime and not to arrest in order to investigate as that would illegal; and that the violation of fundamental rights of arrested and detained persons will ultimately be an exercise in futility, and a waste of precious and scarce State resources if found to be in contravention of section 51 of the Constitution.
This is because such arrests and detention will be held illegal in terms of section 51(8), and the concerned officials’ risk be held personally liable for compensation in terms of section 50(9).
In view of the above, the ZHRC hails the progress made by the State towards setting up the Independent Complaints Mechanism for complaints against members of the security services in terms of section 210 of the Constitution, and urges it to expedite the process.
The ZHRC strongly recommends, meanwhile, that the Zimbabwe Republic Police expeditiously investigate cases of violence and improper conduct against arrested and detained persons.
All institutions in the justice delivery system must ensure that all due processes of the law are followed to ensure that justice is done and that all offenders are brought to justice.
The ZHRC also urges the State to complete the circle of zero tolerance against torture begun by section 53 of the Constitution’s prohibition of torture, by ratifying the United Nations Convention Against Torture and its Optional Protocol, so that torture may be more effectively dealt with by the law.

Full Statement: Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission Condemns Abductions, Assaults And Torture Of Citizens

The lawyers representing four pro-democracy activists arrested at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport last Wednesday have described the horrific mistreatment their clients endured at the hands of state security agents.
Namatai Kwekweza, the recipient of the prestigious Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize in 2023, Robson Chere, Samuel Gwenzi, and Vusumuzi Moyo were dragged out from a plane bound for Victoria Falls, and reportedly tortured while being held incommunicado for hours.
The four pro-democracy activists appeared before the Harare Magistrate Court on Friday, facing charges of disorderly conduct.
They were accused of involvement in a demonstration protesting the detention of Jameson Timba, a leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction.
As reported by <a href="https://cite.org.zw/lawyers-detail-brutal-treatment-of-pro-democracy-campaigners/">CITE</a>, during the court proceedings, the activists’ lawyers – Jeremiah Bhamu, Tinashe Chinopfukutwa, Roseline Hanzi, and Charles Kwaramba from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) – described the systematic assault their clients had endured.
One of the activists, Kwekweza, was subjected to particularly cruel treatment. Fully aware of her recent dental procedure, one of her assailants deliberately shoved a shoe and metal bar into her mouth, inflicting excruciating pain.
She was also threatened with further violence if she refused to cooperate. Her phone, laptop, and passport were also seized.
The lawyers said Kwekweza was not even in Zimbabwe when the alleged crime was committed at the Harare Magistrate Court on June 27, 2024.
Moyo who is said to be a sound engineer for a prominent musician was also beaten up.
Chere, the secretary general of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), was allegedly beaten with an iron bar, leaving him with bloodshot eyes for two days. His phone was also used to record the assault.
Chere’s ordeal continued with waterboarding, and his dreadlocks were forcibly cut off.
His lawyers detailed how the assailants threatened to kill him or rape his wife if any demonstrations took place ahead of the SADC Summit. They also made chilling threats against his family.
Harare councillor Samuel Gwenzi was allegedly struck with open palms and iron bars, and ordered to chant ZANU-PF slogans and declare his Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party a “Western puppet party.”
Gwenzi’s captors even threatened to harm his children. His phone was also seized, and he was subjected to further beatings.
The assailants additionally threatened to kill other opposition leaders, including Gift Ostallos Siziba and Takudzwa Ngadziore, if they planned any protests.

Pro-Democracy Activists Describe Brutal Mistreatment By State Agents

A Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) agent caught on video abducting an opposition Member of Parliament last year has been publicly sighted for the first time since the kidnapping incident.
As reported by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/cio-agent-in-ak47-abduction-torture-of-ccc-mp-ngadziore-seen-in-public/">ZimLive</a>, Nicholas “Big Daddy” Kajese was seen at Pomona landfill and dumpsite on Monday, 26 February dressed casually in a striped T-shirt, a pair of jeans and trainers.
The Minister of Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture Kirsty Coventry was visiting the landfill and dumpsite to inspect sports facilities being constructed by Geo-Pomona, the company awarded a tender to develop a power station using waste.
ZimLive reported that Kajese attended the Pomona event as the CIO officer in charge of Mabvuku, where the dumpsite is located.
Kajese was seen following proceedings and at one time stood in earshot as journalists interviewed Geo Pomona Waste Management CEO Dilesh Nguwaya.
Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MP Takudzwa Ngadziore was on his way to parliament on 01 November 2023 when he was ambushed and abducted by CIO agents armed with AK47s.
The youthful MP managed to turn his Facebook Live on and recorded the men as they approached from behind before they grabbed him and shoved him into their vehicle.
ZimLive sources identified two of the men as Kajese and Abraham Pasi.
Ngadziore was allegedly taken to Mazowe where he was stripped and badly tortured before being injected with an unknown substance.
His captors then dumped him in the bush where he was found by artisanal miners who called for help.
Ngadziore filed a police report at the time but the investigation went nowhere.

CIO Agent Implicated In The Abduction, Torture Of CCC MP Takaudzwa Ngadziore Resurfaces

There is growing concern in Zimbabwe regarding the safety of opposition political activists after several of them were abducted, tortured, and injected with unknown substances by suspected state security agents. These injections have raised fears that they may contain a slow-acting poison, leading to the gradual deterioration of the victims’ health.
The opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change, led by Nelson Chamisa, has publicly accused state security agents and the ruling party, ZANU PF, of being responsible for these acts. They believe that these actions are part of a broader campaign of violence and attacks targeting opposition activists.
Victims have come forward to share their experiences, describing the physical and emotional pain they endured during their abductions and torture. Medical professionals suspect that the unknown substances injected into them may pose a long-term health risk. CCC spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi, told <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/zimbabwe-dissidents-may-be-victims-of-serial-poison-plot-by-emmerson-mnangagwas-regime?ref=scroll">The Daily Beast</a>:

We are not aware what the substance is but experts in one of the cases indicated that it could lead to a deadly cancer within five years if not drained out [of the body] in time.

Womberaishe Nhende, a Harare city councillor and member of the CCC, says he was abducted, beaten, and injected with an unknown substance. He believes his involvement with the CCC and organising protests against the alleged theft of the August 2023 election made him a target. He said:

But l have never shifted on my resolve to fight for a better Zimbabwe for all, though disturbed by the methods of engagement being used by ZANU PF. I know for a fact it’s ZANU PF-sponsored state agents, for they were blunt in their conduct. 
The doctors have recommended further treatment outside Zimbabwe. Nothing conclusive has been reached hence the need to have further tests in highly specialized laboratories.
</blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights has sent some victims for testing in South Africa, but the results are pending. International organizations like Amnesty International have condemned the worsening human rights situation in Zimbabwe and called for thorough investigations into these crimes.
The abductions and assaults on opposition activists have also raised concerns among the US and European embassies. The government has in the past dismissed claims of abductions as fabricated.

Some of the alleged abductions have not been reported to the police due to fears that the state might use the case against those who would have reported. This concern is based on incidents involving Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri, and Netsai Marova, who reported their abductions but were later charged with faking their abduction to defame the government.

Abducted People Were Possibly Injected With Slow-killing Poison

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters in Mabvuku -Tafara Constituency have accused <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Pedzai_Sakupwanya">Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya</a>, who is the ZANU PF candidate in the 09 December by-elections, of the abduction and subsequent murder of Tapfumaneyi Masaya.
Masaya was abducted in broad daylight while conducting door-to-door campaigns for CCC’s candidate Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi who is running against Sakupwanya.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/mabvuku-residents-say-zanu-pf-moneybag-scott-sakupwanya-responsible-for-murder-of-ccc-activist/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> at Masaya’s funeral wake in Mabvuku, CCC supporters who declined to be named for fear of the police claimed they saw the abduction unfolding before their eyes.
They alleged that Sakupwanya’s runners and supporters were responsible for the abduction.
One of the residents who claims to have witnessed Masaya’s kidnapping was quoted as saying:

It is clear that this is Sakupwanya’s doing but we do not know how saying this will be interpreted by the police considering what (Job) Sikhala is going through.
He knows we know that it was him and the same thugs whose names we gave to the police know that they were seen.
Our hope is that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) acts on what it has been told at least so that just is partly served.

CCC activist and Mabvuku resident Tonderai Dombo told NewZimbabwe.com that they are now fearing for their lives as Masaya was not a senior member of the party. Said Dombo:

We do not know why they would do all this though. Masaya was neither a senior member of this movement to have influence that could attract such a reaction. This shows that we are all in danger.

Masaya, who was a pastor at Pillar of the World Church, left behind his wife Maria Zhuwawo and their three children.

CCC Supporters Say Scott Sakupwanya Responsible For Murder Of Tapfumaneyi Masaya

Police have confirmed that the body that was found in the Cleveland area, Harare on Sunday is that of Tapfumanei Masaya.
Masaya (51), who was a CCC activist and a pastor at Pillar of the World Church, was allegedly abducted by unknown people in Mabvuku, Harare, on Saturday.
His party said he was abducted while conducting a door-to-door political campaign to drum up support for Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi, the CCC candidate for upcoming parliamentary by-elections in Mabvuku-Tafara.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Tuesday said Masaya’s body was identified by his next of kin. He said:

Reference is made to the Police’s press statement issued on 13th November 2023 in connection with the body found at the intersection of Arcturus Road and Lobho Road, Cleveland area, Harare on 12th November 2023. 
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the body has been identified by the next of kin as that of Tapfumanei Masaya (51).
The Police is currently conducting comprehensive investigations on the circumstances surrounding Tapfumanei Masaya’s death while at the same time waiting for the full post-mortem report.

Meanwhile, CCC said that Masaya sustained severe injuries all over his body following his abduction. The opposition party said:

Pastor Tapfumanei Masaya suffered severe wounds throughout his body during his harrowing ordeal at the hands of the regime in Harare, ultimately leading to his tragic death. His body is now in a decomposed state due to the injection of a harmful substance.
Hon Kufa has shared this distressing information after personally examining the body at Parirenyatwa. There are worms emerging from his body.

Kufahakutizwi is reportedly considering pulling out of the 09 December by-election. He is asking himself if it is “worth it” running in the vote after the clergyman was abducted and murdered while campaigning for him.

Police Confirm Death Of Tapfumanei Masaya

The late Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Tapfumanei Masaya, whose body was found on Sunday, was allegedly abducted by unidentified people near Chizhanje in Mabvuku, Harare.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), the people who allegedly abducted Masaya were in a three-vehicle convoy.
Another CCC activist, Jeffrey Kalosi, was also abducted and bundled in a different car and assaulted before being dumped near Chabwino. The ZLHR said:

On Monday, our lawyer Innocent Gonese spent the day in Mabvuku/Tafara getting instructions from Maria Zhuwao, the wife of Tapfumanei Masaya, who was abducted and disappeared over the weekend.
Gonese was told that Masaya had not been located since Saturday when he was abducted by some unidentified people near a place called Chizhanje in Mabvuku while conducting a door-to-door political campaign to drum up support for Munyaradzi Kufahakutizwi, the opposition @CCCZimbabwe party’s candidate for upcoming parliamentary by-elections.
The people who abducted Masaya were reportedly in a 3-vehicle convoy &amp; he was bundled into one of the vehicles which looked like a grey Toyota Fortuner.
Jeffrey Kalosi was also abducted &amp; bundled into a double cab vehicle &amp; blindfolded &amp; assaulted before being dumped near a place called Chabwino.
The vehicle in which Masaya was bundled reportedly went in a different direction &amp; he was never seen since then.
Gonese visited Mabvuku Police Station to check on the whereabouts of Masaya &amp; to get an update on police investigations &amp;he was referred to Harare Central Police
By late Monday, Gonese was working on filing a court application at the High Court for habeas corpus to compel whoever is holding Masaya to release him.

Late on Monday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a body was found at the intersection of Arcturus and Lobho Road in the Cleveland area in Harare on Sunday.
Nyathi said that the identity of the victim was yet to be established.

Mabvuku CCC Activist's Abductors Were In A Three-vehicle Convoy - Lawyers

CCC activist, Bishop Tapfumaneyi Masaya, who was allegedly abducted by unknown assailants last week in Mabvuku while campaigning for the party’s candidate in the 09 December by-elections, Munyaradzi Febion Kufahakutizwi, has been found dead.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), CCC deputy spokesperson Gift “Ostallos” Siziba announced Masaya’s death and demanded justice for the slain political activist. He said:

Our Change Champion, Bishop Tapfumaneyi Masaya, who was abducted in Mabvuku while campaigning, has been found dead.
They recalled a legitimately elected MP of Mabvuku, Hon. Kufa. Today, this has cost an innocent life. He shall have justice.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a body was found at the intersection of Arcturus and Lobho Road in the Cleveland area in Harare. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is conducting investigations in connection with the location of a body at the intersection of Arcturus and Lobho Road, Cleveland area, Harare on 12th November 2023.
The identity of the victim is yet to be established.

Asst Comm said more details will be released in due course.
CCC Harare Ward 16 councillor Denford Ngadziore said the unidentified body referred to by the police is of Masaya. <a href="https://x.com/DenfordNgadzio1/status/1724095313613308198?s=20">He posted on X</a>:

CCC Activist Allegedly Abducted Found Dead

The United States has expressed concern over reports of assault and abductions of opposition members in Zimbabwe.
Through its embassy in Zimbabwe, the United States urged the Government of Zimbabwe to respect constitutional rights and the fundamental freedoms of all its citizens.
A statement posted on the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe’s X page on Thursday afternoon reads:

The United States is deeply disturbed by continued reports of violence, assault &amp; abductions of opposition members in #Zimbabwe. We urge respect for constitutional rights &amp; the fundamental freedoms that underpin them.
</blockquote>
This follows the abduction of CCC Member of Parliament Takudzwa Ngadziore, on Wednesday, while on his way to Parliament.
CCC said the youthful MP was dumped in Christon Bank, Mazowe, after he was forcibly undressed, subjected to torture, and injected with an unidentified substance.
Former Mabvuku-Tafara legislator James Chidhakwa (MDC) was also allegedly abducted, tortured and injected with an unidentified substance, recently.
Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Douglas Coltart, on Wednesday staged a solitary protest against the alleged abductions of CCC members by suspected state agents.
Coltart marched along a street in Harare holding a placard with the message: “No to abductions! No to barbarism.”

The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has appealed for SADC’s intervention in Zimbabwe’s “political crisis” after the party’s Youth Quota MP in the National Assembly, <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Takudzwa_Ngadziore">Takudzwa Ngadziore</a> was allegedly abducted and tortured by suspected State agents on Wednesday, 01 November.
Ngadziore recorded his abduction live on Facebook before he was reportedly taken to Mazowe where he was tortured before being stripped naked and dumped.
The kidnapping comes less than a month after former Mabvuku-Tafara MP James Chidhakwa (MDC) was abducted, tortured and later dumped along Arcturus Road.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, CCC Chief Whip Amos Chibaya, said Ngadziore was kidnapped while on his way to the Parliament. He said:

Honourable Ngadziore was abducted while on his way to the parliament.
He was abducted at a gunpoint. this adds to surging politically motivated violence and targeted abductions.
</blockquote>
Several opposition activists who have been kidnapped over the years have alleged that their captors injected them with unknown substances. Said Chibaya:

The pattern of injections is a big worry to us, all of them were injected with an unknown substance. A systematic way to eliminate those who differ from ZANU PF.
We have a political crisis in Zimbabwe arising out of a disputed election of 23 August 2023.
If an MP can be abducted in broad daylight in the capital city think of our activists all over the country who are being victimized for being CCC.

Chibaya demanded that the Police investigate Ngadziore’s abduction and arrest the perpetrators. He said:

We appeal to law enforcement agencies, particularly the police to investigate this issue with urgency and due diligence
We reject the brazen attempt to turn Zimbabwe into a pariah republic.
We are aware that SADC is meeting on the 4th of November to deliberate on other issues such as developments in Zimbabwe.
We call for Zimbabwe’s return to democracy and full respect of the law.

CCC Appeals For SADC's Intervention After Abduction Of MP In Broad Daylight

Zimbabwe’s biggest opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa, has reported that its former Member of Parliament (MP) for Mabvuku-Tafara, James Chidhakwa, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/10/24/former-mabvuku-tafara-mp-chidhakwa-abducted-and-tortured-ccc/">was abducted and subjected to torture</a>. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the party confirmed that Chidhakwa is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Watch the video below for more.

The party’s deputy spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Ostallos_Siziba/">Gift Ostallos Siziba</a>, echoed the report saying Chidhakwa was abducted and severely assaulted by unknown individuals. He said Chidhakwa was found dumped in Acturus, injured and injected with an unknown substance. He sustained deep cuts and is currently hospitalised.

A woman who claims to be a prophetess is currently on the run after kidnapping a client’s baby in Mutare on October 6, 2023. The Mutare police are requesting assistance from the public in locating the suspect, identified as Madzimai Getrude.
A police report seen by Pindula News said the incident took place at a shrine near Mutare Teachers College, where the suspect asked the complainant to fetch herbs for the baby’s supposed healing. Read the report:

Self-proclaimed Prophetess On The Run After Kidnapping A Baby

The opposition CCC has blamed the Government for the alleged abduction and torture of one of its newly-elected councillors in Harare on Saturday night.
Posting on social media site X, CCC said Glen Norah councillor, Womberaishe Nhende was abducted, tortured, drugged, and dumped in Mapinga, Mashonaland West Province. <a href="https://twitter.com/CCCZimbabwe/status/1698219574078935338?s=20">Reads the post</a>:
<blockquote>
…our Glen Norah councilor, Womberaishe Nhende… was abducted, tortured, drugged, and dumped in Mapinga by the Harare regime. His only “crime” is being a member of CCC.
The panic displayed by the Harare regime is indicative of their knowledge that they did not win the 2023 election.

According to Change Radio, Nhende’s assailants used two vehicles, a brown Toyota Fortuner and a silver Toyota Belta. <a href="https://twitter.com/ChangeRadioZW/status/1698131265755418718?s=20">It said</a>:

CCC youth leader Womberai Nhende and one other individual were abducted at around 10 PM yesterday.
The assailants used two vehicles: a brown Toyota Fortuner and a silver Toyota Belta.

This comes after another CCC activist, Nelson Mukwenha, was allegedly abducted by suspected State security agents on 26 August.
According to Amnesty International, on 26 August 2023, Mukwenha was part of a crowd of people that prevented suspected security officials from abducting Promise Mkwananzi, spokesperson of the CCC, during a press conference in Harare.
Later that evening, Mukwenha was reportedly picked up by suspected security officials at his home in Highfields, Harare.
Mukwenha was then tortured and dumped in a forest in Mapinga.

Newly-elected CCC Councillor Abducted And Tortured | Report

Amnesty International has urged the Zimbabwean government to investigate the enforced disappearance and torture of Nelson Mukwenha, a CCC political activist.
Mukwenha was allegedly abducted by suspected State security agents on 26 August.
Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southern Africa, Khanyo Farisè, said those responsible for Mukwenha’s disappearance and torture should be brought to justice. Said Farisè:

Amnesty International strongly condemns the enforced disappearance and torture of Nelson Mukwenha, allegedly at the hands of Zimbabwe’s security forces.
Authorities must conduct a prompt, thorough, impartial, independent, effective, and transparent investigation into Mukwenha’s disappearance and torture.
The findings of any investigation must be made public and those suspected to be responsible must be brought to justice in fair trials.
Everyone, regardless of their political outlook, should be able to freely express themselves and participate in peaceful activism without the fear of abduction or harm.
The Zimbabwean authorities must respect, protect, promote and fulfill the right of everyone to physical security and safety.
The Zimbabwean authorities must ensure that enforced disappearances and abductions are treated as extremely serious crimes, and ensure justice and accountability.

CCC Activist Abducted, Tortured And Dumped

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will appeal the decision of the High Court to acquit Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists Joanna Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri who were being accused of falsely accusing the state of abducting and torturing them back in 2020.
Mamombe and Chimbiri, who were initially charged with fellow party activist Netsai Marova who skipped the country over alleged persecution, were accused of faking their abduction to soil the government’s image.
They were accused of publishing falsehoods.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 05 July, the NPA said it will appeal Harare High Court judge, Priscilla Munangati Manongwa’s decision to acquit the duo.
The NPA said the judge erred in reaching the not guilty verdict. Reads the statement:

The State will be appealing the decision of the High Court in the case of Joana Mamombe and Cecelia Revai Chimbiri versus the Chief Magistrate F Mushure NO and the State The State is of the considered view that the judgment is defective for want of compliance with the High Court Act (Chap 7:06) as well as precedent which provides that another Judge must concur with the presiding Judge before the judgment is handed down.
The State is also contending that the Judge grossly misdirected herself by interfering with the unterminated proceedings from the lower court as the termination of proceedings in this case was unjustified.
Furthermore, the State is certain that another court presented with the same facts might come to a different conclusion.

In her ruling, Justice Manongwa said the state case was full of “malice and falsehoods” in its pursuit of the case.

NPA Says Will Appeal Mamombe, Chimbiri Acquittal

A pupil at Shabani Primary School in Zvishavane, Midlands Province recently survived a kidnapping attempt by two masked men while on her way home.
The suspects reportedly followed the girl from behind, sprayed a white substance in her face, and tried to shove her into their car.
The incident was revealed in a letter by the school’s headmistress who went on to implore parents to ensure their children were also safe outside school premises.
In a letter addressed to parents, the school head, who only signed off as Matutu, said the attempted kidnapping took place on 08 June.
Matutu, however, did not disclose what Grade the child was or her age. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/primary-school-pupil-survives-kidnapping-incident/">Part of the letter reads</a>:

Two men wearing face masks and driving a car followed a child after school and grabbed and doused her with a whitish substance.
The child was only released and saved when another car approached from behind forcing the two men to flee from the scene.

The victim was kidnapped near Chengetanai Old People’s Home by three unknown suspects travelling in a white kombi. The victim was later dumped in Avlon Park.
In March this year, a 12-year-old girl was abducted while she was looking for transport near a primary school in Eastlea, Harare.
Three unknown assailants in a blue Toyota Hiace were involved in the kidnapping.
The girl managed to escape from the three men after they had parked the vehicle in the Hillside area and hid in a nearby maize field.

Kidnappers Target Schoolchildren

Four (4) female Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) employees were reportedly abducted and held for ransom in Musina, South Africa, on Monday night.
The victims, who work at the Beitbridge border post, had entered South Africa at around 3 PM to do some shopping and were all in ZIMRA uniforms.
<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/09/4-zimra-officers-kidnapped-held-for-ransom-in-south-africa/">ZimLive</a> reported a source as saying the four we kidnapped at gunpoint and robbed of all their possessions before ransom demands were made. Said the source:
<blockquote>
They were all in ZIMRA uniform. The kidnappers must have known who their targets were.
The kidnappers demanded R10 000 to free them, but they didn’t have the money on them.
The ZIMRA officers were made to contact their colleagues at the border and one of them had an FNB account, and a transfer was effected.
… The kidnappers were apparently Zimbabwean because they spoke Shona.

The ZIMRA officers were reportedly released at around 12 AM on Tuesday.
Limpopo Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo had not confirmed the incident on Tuesday while a ZIMRA spokesman said they were still gathering details.

Four ZIMRA Officials Kidnapped, Held For Ransom In SA By "Zimbabweans"

The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) says the ruling ZANU PF party has been implicated in the harassment and abduction of opponents in the past two months.
In its May monthly report released this week, ZPP said ZANU PF is intimidating rural folk ahead of the 2023 general elections. Reads the report in part:

The patterns of intimidation and harassment, abductions and assaults implicating the ruling party continue unabated.
It is of great concern that over the past two months, the ZANU PF government, which was the major perpetrator of the 2008 electoral violence and other forms of atrocities before that, is on a systematic drive to intimidate citizens, especially those in rural areas ahead of the 2023 elections.
</blockquote>
ZANU PF allegedly unleashed an orgy of violence targeting MDC-T supporters during the 2008 presidential election runoff between the late former President Robert Mugabe and the late MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai eventually withdrew from the race citing violence against his supporters, leaving Mugabe to run a one-man race.
Meanwhile, ZANU PF director for information Tafadzwa Mugwadi dismissed the ZPP report saying the organisation is funded by the country’s detractors to tarnish the ruling party’s image. Said Mugwadi:

We have no regard for ZPP and all those associated with it and its entire puppet discourses.
It is an organisation manned by neo-imperial elements funded to tarnish the people’s agenda as represented by ZANU PF.
They have no shame nor spine, no facts nor truth but vendetta-laden discourses tailored to salvage waning relevance in the non-governmental organisation sector and in the process, receive donor handouts. ZPP can safely go hang.

Harassment, Abduction Of Govt Critics Continue Unabated - ZPP

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Saturday confirmed the arrest of Ivy Nyashano (28), in connection with the unlawful detention and rape involving seven juveniles, which occurred between 13th and 24th May 2022 in Karoi and Harare.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Nyashanu was arrested at her residence in Zengeza, Chitungwiza on Thursday, 26 May 2022 and will appear in court soon.
On Thursday, police issued a statement saying they were looking for Nyashano. The statement read:

<h2>UNLAWFUL DETENTION AND RAPE OF SEVEN JUVENILES</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Ivy Nyashano (No Further Particulars Known) who is being sought by the Police for cases of unlawful detention and rape involving seven juveniles, which occurred between 13th and 24th May 2022 in Karoi and Harare.
On 13th May 2022, the suspect allegedly went to the Chikangwe area in Karoi where she persuaded and convinced seven female juveniles aged between 12 and 16 years to accompany her to the Buffalo Downs area in Karoi on the pretext that she was going to offer them employment as shop attendants. She took the victims to her residence in Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza in Harare.
On 14th May 2022, the suspect started to give the victims beer, family planning pills, among other tablets to drug them before forcing the victims to have sexual intercourse with different men whom she charged an undisclosed fee.
This continued up until three of the victims escaped from the suspect’s home on 24th May 2022 and contacted their parents, who then sent them bus fares to return home and a police report was made.
Parents and guardians are urged to counsel children and ensure that they are not enticed by criminal syndicates to run away from home through purported and false lucrative offers.

Police Arrest Woman (28) Who Turned Seven Girls Into Sex Slaves

MDC Alliance activist, John Mupanduki, who was allegedly abducted, tortured and dumped in Bikita a week ago, was arrested charged with communicating statements prejudicial to the State.
Mupanduki was on Thursday granted ZW$5 000 by the Masvingo Magistrate Court. He was ordered to report every Friday at Bikita Police. The MDC Alliance said in a statement:

We condemn his arrest [and] persecution. Those who abducted him on 7 Jan have not been brought to book. [The Zimbabwe Republic Republic Police] has not investigated his report.
</blockquote>
Mupanduki was allegedly abducted by unknown assailants around 2 AM at Nyika Growth point early this month.
According to the MDC Alliance, Mupanduki’s abductors were driving an unmarked car. He was reportedly found the following day badly tortured and disoriented.
Mupanduki later made an official report at Bikita Police Station Law and Order after making an initial report at Nyika Police Base.

Mupanduki Granted ZW$5 000 Bail

Nobekezelo Maseko, the mother of the seven-year-old child who was trafficked to Kenya five years ago said that she has been receiving calls from companies and NGOs that want to sponsor the upkeep of her child when he returns home.
The child, Awakhiwe Ackim Ncube, was abducted five years ago while playing with other kids in Nkayi’s area of Hompani and taken to Kenya.
Zimbabwean authorities and their Kenyan counterparts are reportedly working on paperwork to repatriate the boy, five years after he was kidnapped and found at Happy Children’s Home in Nairobi.
His mother told B-Metro that she is divorced from Awakhiwe’s abusive father and has since remarried.
Nobekezelo revealed that her son will not be taken back to Nkayi to stay with his grandparents (from his father’s side) where he was when he was abducted, but will be joining her in Inyathi where she resides. She said:

I have been receiving calls from different organisations who are willing to assist me when my son is brought back home.
Yesterday I was called by someone from the Welfare office, she was asking me why I left my previous husband in Nkayi with kids. She was asking because they also want to help.
I told her he was abusing me so when he was arrested, I got a chance to leave and the kids remained with their grandfather. I was not allowed to take my children with me.

According to Nobekeze, Awakhiwe was kidnapped and drugged with two other children by the kidnappers who were headed to Kenya.
The suspected kidnappers, Margaret Juma Magero and David Ochieng Omentho, believed to be husband and wife, had two other children who are not Zimbabwean.
When they reached the Kenyan border, Awakhiwe is said to have started crying and demanding to be returned to his mother.
Border officials became suspicious and detained the kidnappers as Awakhiwe was speaking in Ndebele.
The officials thought the child was Zimbabwean or South African.
The alleged kidnappers were arraigned before senior principal magistrate, Diana Mochache in Shanzu Principal courts on 13 December 2016.
The magistrate ruled that Awakhiwe and the two children be placed under the custody of Happy Children’s home in Nairobi until their parents are found.
The other two kids have since been identified, extradited to their home countries and reunited with their families.

Companies Pledge To Sponsor Trafficked Nkayi Boy

An MDC Alliance youth member in Bikita West, John Mupanduki, was allegedly abducted by unknown assailants around 2 AM at Nyika Growth point on Friday.
According to the MDC Alliance, Mupanduki’s abductors were driving an unmarked car. He was reportedly found on Saturday badly tortured and disoriented. MDC-A said in <a href="https://twitter.com/mdczimbabwe/status/1480047519702962177">a tweet</a> on Sunday morning:

Bikita West youth, John Mupanduki, was abducted at around 0200hrs at Nyika Growth point on Friday. The perpetrators used an unmarked car.
He was found yesterday badly tortured &amp; disoriented. We call for an end to abductions of opposition members, torture &amp; political violence.

In an update on Sunday afternoon, the MDC Alliance said Mupanduki had made an official report at Bikita Police Station Law and Order after an initial report at Nyika Base. <a href="https://twitter.com/mdczimbabwe/status/1480173386282246147">It said:</a>

MDC Alliance Youth Member Abducted, Tortured And Dumped

7-year old Awakhiwe Ackim Ncube who was kidnapped five years ago while playing with other kids in Nkayi’s area of Hompani is still to be reunited with his parents after he was spotted in Kenya.
His parents are now on the verge of giving up hope of ever seeing their son again despite the fact that they know where he is.
According to the mother, Nobekezelo Maseko, Awakhiwe was kidnapped and drugged with two other children by the kidnappers who were headed to Kenya.
The suspected kidnappers, Margaret Juma Magero and David Ochieng Omentho, believed to be husband and wife, had two other children who are not Zimbabwean.
When they reached the Kenyan border, Awakhiwe is said to have started crying and demanding to be returned to his mother.
Border officials became suspicious and detained the kidnappers as Awakhiwe was speaking in Ndebele.
The officials thought the child was Zimbabwean or South African.
The alleged kidnappers were arraigned before senior principal magistrate, Diana Mochache in Shanzu Principal courts on 13 December 2016.
The magistrate ruled that Awakhiwe and the two children be placed under the custody of Happy Children’s home in Nairobi until their parents are found.
The other two kids have since been identified, extradited to their home countries and reunited with their families.
A month after he was last seen in his grandparents’ backyard, Awakhiwe, who was 2 years old when he was kidnapped, was found at Happy Children’s home in Kenya in Nairobi after his pictures circulated on social media. His mother Nobekezelo said:

One of the neighbours in Nkayi brought a picture which was sent by his son who is in South Africa.
They went with it to show the grandfather of the child who saw without a doubt that it was his grandson.

She said she reached out to the orphanage and a woman running it confirmed that her Awakhiwe was a resident at the home. Said Nobekezelo:

I sent her a picture and Awakhiwe identified me. The mother, who keeps them, asked us which name are we using when we call him, we said Kim, which is short for Ackim.
She then said called him by that name and he answered back.

Meanwhile, Nobekezelo said the paperwork to bring back her child is still being processed by the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Kenya.

Zimbabwean Toddler Kidnapped In Nkayi Spotted In Kenya

The MDC Alliance has finally put to rest claims that its vice president Tendai Biti was abducted by suspected State security agents on Monday night.
Party spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere described as fake news a report by an online publication purporting that Biti was seized from his home by heavily armed men who bundled him in an Isuzu pick up truck and drove off at great speed.
The publication reported MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende as confirming Biti’s alleged abduction but all the claims were dismissed by the party.
Mahere said Biti was not abducted and was at no point reported missing. She said Biti was trailed by a suspicious vehicle yesterday and was expected to report the matter to the police. Said Mahere:

We confirm that VP [Tendai Biti] is safe. We have verified that, contrary to reports in a fake news story published by an online paper, he was not abducted nor did he go missing.
He was trailed by a suspicious vehicle yesterday and a police report is to be made.

Meanwhile, MDC Alliance vice-chairperson Job Sikhala claimed that Simbanegavi and Gakanje were trailing Biti.
The firebrand Zengeza West MP, who had been arrested scores of times for his political activism, threatened to expose the full identities of those involved in stalking Biti. Tweeted Sikhala:

MDC Alliance Castigates "Fake News" Peddlers

MDC Alliance co-vice president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti">Tendai Biti</a> is “okay”, the party’s treasurer-general David Coltart has confirmed.
There was heightened anxiety in opposition circles on Tuesday morning after social media reports claimed that Biti was abducted from his Harare home on Monday night by armed suspected State agents.
Coltart on Tuesday midday said he had spoken to Biti who assured him that he was fine but believes his offices and home have been under surveillance by suspected state operatives over the past few days.
Biti said he feels as if he is in Beirut, in reference to the capital city of Lebanon, a small Arab country situated along the Mediterranean coastline, that has experienced instability in recent months <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/08/06/watch-the-damage-caused-by-the-beirut-blast/">including unexplained explosions</a> and street gunfights involving militias. <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidColtart/status/1458020197592440835">Said Coltart:</a>

Biti Okay, But Feels "As If He Is In Beirut" - Coltart

The MDC Alliance has allayed fears that the party’s co-vice president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti">Tendai Biti</a> has been abducted from his home.
This comes after social media reports claimed that unknown gunmen attacked and kidnapped Biti from his home in Harare last night.
Reports claimed that loud gunshots were heard around 11 PM at Biti’s house as five armed men suspected to be state security agents assaulted and dragged Biti into an unidentified white ISUZU twin cab which then drove off at a very high speed. 
However, MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere on Tuesday morning said she had spoken to Biti who seemed to show the effects of exhaustion. <a href="https://twitter.com/advocatemahere/status/1457974361701470215?s=20">Mahere tweeted:</a>

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the MDC Alliance said Biti’s car was being trailed by a vehicle driven by one Gakanje, a ZANU PF member who is allegedly working with Yeukai Simbanegavi, the Deputy Minister of National Housing Social Amenities.
The MDC Alliance said the duo blocked Biti’s access to a road that leads to his home and were constantly parked at his office.
The MDC Alliance vice president was said to be making a police report on the matter.

MDC Alliance Speaks On Biti "Abduction" Reports

An MDC Alliance (MDC-A) official says he is now living in fear following an attempted abduction incident by three unknown men in Chegutu on Tuesday night.
Tawanda Bvumo, who is the party’s Mashonaland West provincial secretary, told NewZimbabwe.com on Thursday that the incident occurred on Tuesday night around 8:30 pm while he was travelling alone in his Mercedes Benz E240 from Chegutu to Chinhoyi.
He said he was suddenly overtaken by two speeding vehicles, a black Toyota Vigo double-cab and a silver Toyota RunX, after Musengezi turn-off.
Both cars suspiciously did not have registration number plates. Said Bvumo:
<blockquote>After overtaking me and having driven for about five kilometres, the cars reduced speed all of a sudden.
I overtook them, but immediately after doing that, the cars overtook me yet again which then heightened my suspicion.
After a short distance, l saw the two vehicles parked at a layby with the three stalkers waiting by the roadside as if they were hitch-hiking.
I didn’t stop but l managed to identify them by their clothes.
After driving for about two kilometres, the cars overtook me yet again but suddenly reduced speed that l almost rammed into the Toyota RunX, swerved to the right and sped for about 10 or so kilometres.
I hit a pothole and my car’s left rear tyre burst on impact but l kept going for about five kilometres until the tyre was completely shredded forcing me to stop.
The Toyota RunX emerged and parked right in front of my car but l quickly opened my door and fled into the tall grass before occupants of the trailing vehicles came out of their cars.</blockquote>
Bvumo said he fled into the darkness before hiding in a bush and could hear the trio talking from a distance.
He said he then called party security personnel who came to rescue him hours later.
The MDC-A official said his stalkers were clearly hitmen sent on an abduction and extermination mission.

MDC Alliance Official Escapes Nocturnal Abduction

The trial of six MDC Alliance party youth leaders commences today at the Harare Magistrates Court.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), the activists are being represented by Obey Shava.
The MDC-A activists are facing public violence charges after they allegedly participated in an anti-government protest against hunger during the 2020 national lockdown period.
The six are Joanna Mamombe, Tererai Sithole, Cecilia Chimbiri, Netsai Marova, Lovejoy Chitengu, and Stan Manyenga.
They were arrested in 2020 and charged with participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of the peace, or bigotry as defined in section 37 of the Criminal Code.
Prosecutors claim that the six participated in an illegal demonstration held on 13 May 2020 in Warren Park suburb, Harare.
Following the flash demonstration, Mamombe, Chimbiri, and Marova were arrested at a police roadblock on their way to the city centre and allegedly abducted later from a police station.
The trio further alleged that they were physically and s_xually abused by their armed captives over a two-day period in Bindura before they were dumped by the roadside.

Trial Of MDC Alliance Youth Leaders Set To Commence

The family of Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) leader Mqondisi Moyo said it is now living in fear of being abducted after suspected Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives were seen close to his home.
The MRP’s information department said the suspected CIOs had been questioning Moyo’s neighbours about his whereabouts. The party said in a statement:
<blockquote>On April 12 at 10:17 am, four men who introduced themselves as CIOs descended on the (MRP) president’s family home.
Upon being asked to identify themselves, they produced cards that identified them as Zimbabwe Republic Police members, instead.
They claimed they wanted to know where the MRP president was.
Moyo’s sister-in-law asked them to explain their interest in seeing Moyo but they did not want to respond to that question and later said they wanted to question him personally.</blockquote>
The MRP said Moyo is not running away from police but is only avoiding abduction by State security agents as abductions have become common since the 2017 military coup.
Last month MRP activists clashed with police at Tabas Induna Farm in Ntabazinduna over a land dispute.
Nine MRP members were arrested after they stormed the farm demanding the eviction of Floyd Ambrose who is believed to be former Vice-President Kembo Mohadi’s son-in-law.
