<p>It shines on the processor, which is much more powerful than the rest. It has a Media Dimensity 6080. The processor matter most in terms of speed and also photo quality so this is the most powerful itel phone to date.</p>

itel P55, P55+, and P55 5G Now Available in Zimbabwe. Starting at $119

<p>Econet announced the launch of its 5G network in Zimbabwe in February 2022. The company rolled out 5G with the help of Ericsson. Econet is the only mobile operator in Zimbabwe currently that has 5G. </p>
<p>In general, 5G offers internet speeds that are up to 10 times that of 4G. </p>
<p>With the release of more and more 5G capable phones globally, Zimbabweans may not be clear if these phones are relevant in Zimbabwe.</p>

<p>According to the telecoms industry regulator, POTRAZ,  Econet has a total of 22 5G base stations currently (<a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/04/potraz-q4-2022-report-out-internet-penetration-now-65-3-theres-more/">based on December 2022 data</a>).  In March this year, Econet promised to deploy more 5G sites around the country but did not commit to any numbers.</p>
<h2>Does it make sense to buy a 5G phone in Zimbabwe?</h2>
<p>As you can see above, the total number of 5G base stations in the whole country is just 22. This is a very small number, especially considering that 5G has a limited range compared to 4G and 3G. </p>
<p>To put it into perspective, Econet has over 900 4G base stations in Zimbabwe. Based on these numbers, in a practical sense, we can’t really say there is 5G in Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>In the rare case that you live or work in one of the 22 locations listed above that have 5G, it will be worth it for you, yes. Otherwise, there’s no point.</p>
<h2>Does NetOne have 5G?</h2>
<p>As of the writing of this article, NetOne does not have any commercial 5G sites in Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>What about Telecel? We cannot even talk of 5G when it comes to Telecel. The company is struggling to deploy a 4G network, with only 17 of them so far according to the industry regulators report.</p>
<h2>Which phones available in Zimbabwe have 5G?</h2>
<p>This is a hard question to answer because most of the phones in Zimbabwe do not come into the country through the manufacturer’s official channels. </p>
<p>People buy mobile phones that were made for other markets like US, UK, South Africa, and Australia (basically where Zimbabweans in the diaspora are found). They also buy phones meant for Asia that are imported via market the Dubai gray market channels. </p>
<p>This means that 5G phones available in these countries can also generally be available on the local market. But again, there’s no point in buying a 5G mobile phone right now. At least it being 5G must not be the reason for buying it.</p>

5G Network Coverage In Zimbabwe - Where Can You Find It? Should You Buy a 5G Phone?

<p>Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has strengthened its partnership with Ericsson as it embarks on a network upgrade to deliver 5G connectivity in more locations across Harare.</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/press-releases/1/2023/econet-partners-ericsson-to-modernize-network-infrastructure-in-zimbabwe"><span>Press release</span></a>, Ericsson said the partnership with Econet aims to boost digital transformation through the evolution of the existing network to cloud native architecture. It said:</p>

<p>Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (ZSE: ECO.ZW) has strengthened its partnership with Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) at Mobile World Congress 2023, Barcelona, Spain as it prepares for 5G expansion by modernizing its Radio Access Network (RAN) and mobile Core network across Harare, Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>Through upgrades in its mobile Core and RAN solutions, Ericsson will help accelerate Econet’s digital transformation journey.</p>
<p>The network upgrade will pave the way for Econet to deliver 5G connectivity in more locations, unlocking advanced consumer and enterprise use cases.</p>
<p>As part of the mobile Core evolution, Ericsson will modernize the existing Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network to cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core, as well as upgrade the Unified Data Management (UDM) solution.</p>
<p>The scope of the agreement with Econet also includes Ericsson’s cloud infrastructure solutions, the Circuit Switch Core modernization and the introduction of IP Multimedia System (IMS) for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi).</p>
<p>Modernizing Econet’s network infrastructure will enable a wide range of services to subscribers, including high-definition VoLTE and applications that require low latency and improved responsiveness.</p>
<p>High-speed internet will be enabled through 4G and 5G radio access networks, coupled to the modernized packet core network.</p>
<p>Along with enhancing user experience, Econet will also benefit from increased network coverage and capacity.</p>
<p>The network modernization will include Econet’s existing 2G, 3G and LTE networks, with Ericsson’s latest 5G multi-band, multi-sector radios – such as Radio 4466 – which offers capacity expansion, energy efficiency and an average of 15 percent reduction in tower load.</p>
<p>Through the partnership, Econet will realize greater LTE indoor penetration and continue its seamless deployment of 5G, Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and private networks.</p>

Econet Partners Ericsson to Modernise Network Infrastructure Across Zimbabwe

<p>The Minister of Information, Communication, Technology, and Courier Services Dr. Jenfan Muswere has said that NetOne will be deploying more than 250 base stations. The base stations will include ones running the latest mobile internet technology, called 5G.</p>
<p>Speaking to the Sunday Mail in an interview, Muswere said this is part of what he referred to as NetOn’es Mobile Broadband Phase 3 project.</p>
<p>Said Muswere:</p>

<p>We are also finalising the e-government platforms and the roll out of the NetOne MBB (Mobile Broad Band) phase 3, which will see the deployment of more than 250 base stations including 5G.</p>
<p>Econet and other private sector companies are also involved in various ways.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Muswere also said that the government is working on other ways to ensure more network coverage in the country, including facilitating the sharing of base station towers amongst the operators. He said mobile operators have entered into an agreement to share more than 400 towers.</p>

POTRAZ (Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe) is funding the derigging of duplicated towers for relocation to other underserved and remote areas. Sharing infrastructure will certainly speed up the coverage of the areas that currently do not have network.</p>

<p>NetOne is Zimbabwe’s second-largest mobile operator by the number of subscribers. The first is Econet. Muswere did not give details of when NetOne’s phase 3 project will kick in.</p>
<p>The 5G technology makes the internet faster, and more stable than current technologies (3G and 4G). It is also able to support advanced uses of the internet such as Virtual Reality. In addition, it will also make it easier for other things to the internet, such as vehicles, bicycles, and home appliances.</p>
<p>In Africa, only 2 countries have commercial 5G networks; South Africa and Kenya. Globally, it is estimated that by 2025, 5G networks are likely to cover one-third of the world’s population.</p>

NetOne To Deploy More Than 250 Base Stations, Including 5G

<p>Britain has banned companies in the European Country from using equipment from China’s tech company Huawei which was going to be used to roll out superfast mobile network 5G in the European country. The equipment according to VOA had previously been allowed to be used to roll out 5G in England. In banning the equipment, Britain said <em>new US sanctions imposed on the company in May had “significantly changed” the landscape </em>according to CNN</p>

<p>Telecommunications engineers have received death threats from people believing that they are working on the Fifth Generation network 5G following the conspiracy theory which links the emergence of the deadly coronavirus to 5G.</p>
<p>Andy Kerr, Deputy General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) which represents nearly 40,000 telecoms engineers in the United Kingdom said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>We’ve actually had cases where people have been threatened with being stabbed, threatened with physical violence and in some cases actually threatened with murder.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>The theory which claims that 5G technology helps transmit coronavirus but scientists have since dismissed the theory saying the idea of a connection between COVID-19 and 5G is “complete rubbish” and biologically impossible.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Twitter has updated its coronavirus guidelines, stating that it will remove unverified claims that cause “widespread panic” or encourage people to act on conspiracy theories after phone masts across the U.K. were set alight following bogus claims about 5G.</p>
<p>The theory which started around January has ironically been endorsed by prominent political, religious and business people across the world.</p>

COVID-19: Death Threats Issued To Telecoms Engineers Believed To Be Working On 5G, Twitter Reacts

<p>The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has dismissed as false reports linking the Fifth Generation (5G) wireless mobile phone technology to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.</p>
<p>POTRAZ said in a statement there is no scientific basis nor real evidence backing the “conspiracy theory”. The statement read in part:</p>
<blockquote><p>POTRAZ, as a science-based statutory body with responsibility for the safe and orderly rollout of telecommunication networks in Zimbabwe, would like to make it clear to the citizenry and public at large, that the purported link between 5G and COVID-19 is a falsehood, which has no scientific basis nor real evidence backing it.</p>
<p>Even outside the scientific realm, evidence abounds that many countries, Zimbabwe included, which are yet to roll out 5G are heavily afflicted by the pandemic, while some countries with 5G have very few if any confirmed cases.</p>
<p>5G, or Fifth Generation, is the latest wireless mobile phone technology, first widely deployed in 2019.</p>
<p>5G is expected to increase performance and a wide range of new applications, including strengthening e-Health (telemedicine, remote surveillance, telesurgery).</p></blockquote>
<p>COVID-19 has to date, infected 2 208 217 across the world, while there have been 148 725 deaths and 558 620 recoveries.</p>


POTRAZ Dismisses 'Conspiracy Theories' Linking 5G Network To COVID-19

<p>Breakthrough Investor has reported that new 5G (fifth-generation) networks are going live over the next few months.</p>
<p>5G networks are premised at bringing a technological shifts that promises to deliver speeds as much as 100 times faster than 4G.</p>
<p>Information Communication Technology (ICT) experts project that 5G will eventually replace almost every internet connection on earth.</p>
<p>They also predict that by 2021 alone, there will be an estimated 29 billion devices hooked up to 5G and that this will create a market value of more than $1.46 trillion for investors.</p>
<p>It is unclear if a migration to 5G connectivity will be affected by conspiracy theories which are being circulated on social media which link 5G technologies to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.</p>
<p>The theories are surprisingly being pushed by prominent politicians, business and religious leaders who are inculcating fear over and resistance to the tech.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.iotsworldcongress.com/advantatges-of-5g-and-how-will-benefit-iot/">IOT Solutions World Congress</a> observes t<span class="ILfuVd"><span class="e24Kjd">hat the main advantages of the 5G network include:</span></span></p>

<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa backed China in its ongoing trade war with the United States, heaping praise on Huawei as a leader in 5G technologies. Ramaphosa said the US is jealous of Huawei.</p>
<p>The SA president was speaking at the 4th Industrial Revolution SA – Digital Economy Summit in South Africa.</p>
<p>Said Ramaphosa:</p>
<blockquote><p>The United States has been unable to imagine a better future which goes beyond 4 plus 1G, where they have been unable to imagine what 5G can offer, and where now clearly they are jealous.</p>
<p>They are jealous that a Chinese company called Huawei has outstripped them. And because they have been outstripped they must now punish that one company and use it as a pawn in the fight that they have with China.</p>
<p>We have to say we support the company that is going to take our country and indeed the world to better technologies, and this is 5G</p>
<p>It is important that even as there is a trade war, or whatever, it should not spill over to disabling various countries in the world and various peoples in the world […] we want 5G and we know where we can get 5G.</p></blockquote>
<p>The leaders of telecoms companies in SA ( CEOs of Cell C, MTN, Vodacom, and Telkom) approached the president for help in dealing with the potential repercussions of the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/05/22/watch-the-huawei-ban-explained/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Huawei ban</a>. Ramaphosa has been <a href="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/columns/312549-president-ramaphosa-blunders-with-comments-about-5g-and-huawei.html">criticised for failing to appreciate that the US is actually a leader in 5G technologies</a>.</p>
