Dynamos made history on Sunday by becoming the first team to win the Chibuku Super Cup twice in a row, edging past Ngezi Platinum Stars in a tense penalty shootout at Rufaro Stadium.
The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes and had to be decided by penalties. It was a repeat of last year’s final, where the Glamour Boys triumphed 2-0 at Baobab Stadium, and their second meeting in two weeks after Ngezi Platinum Stars won 2-0 in a rearranged Castle Lager Premier Soccer League fixture at Baobab.
Ngezi Platinum Stars took the lead in the 23rd minute through Obriel Chirinda and appeared to be in control for much of the match.
However, Dynamos equalised in the 78th minute when Ghanaian Frederick Ansah-Botchway netted to force the game into extra time.
After a goalless extra time, the match was decided by penalties. Dynamos showed remarkable composure, converting all four of their spot-kicks, with goalkeeper Martin Mapisa playing the hero by saving two penalties.
Frank Makarati, Temptation Chiwunga, Eli Ilunga, and Issah Sadiki all scored for Dynamos, while Mapisa stopped Moses Demera and Farai Madhanaga’s attempts, sealing the victory.

Meanwhile, Dynamos secured their spot by defeating Manica Diamonds 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
In Saturday’s match in Mhondoro, Ngezi took the lead in the 37th minute with a goal from Talent Chamboko.
However, Simba Bhora equalised in the 75th minute thanks to Tymon Machope’s close-range effort.
Machope then scored again six minutes later, putting Simba ahead, but Ngezi responded just two minutes after that with Farai Madanhanga’s goal, sending the match to penalties.
During the shootout, Kudzai Chigwida, Nigel Makumbe, Takunda Benhura, Never Tigere, and Madanhanga all successfully converted their kicks for Ngezi Platinum Stars.
For Simba, Walter Musona, Blessing Moyo, Gift Saunyama, and Onifade Abubakar scored, but Ishe Mauchi had his attempt saved, securing Ngezi’s place in the final.

Meanwhile, Yadah coach Thomas Ruzive on Tuesday said that the club will assess star player Khama Billiat, to see if he will be able to play against the Glamour Boys.
Billiat was in the Warriors squad that played back-to-back 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Namibia in South Africa.
He scored the winning goal in the first match, helping the Warriors secure a 1-0 victory.
However, he was unable to complete the return leg on Monday, which Zimbabwe won 3-1. Concerns arose about his condition after he took an awkward fall in the second half.
Billiat and the rest of the local contingent from the Warriors were expected to return home late yesterday afternoon.
Dynamos are also expected to welcome back vice-captain Emmanuel Jalai and goalkeeper Martin Mapisa, who have returned from national team duty.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has found Highlanders Football Club guilty of causing the abandonment of their Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final match against Simba Bhora on September 22 at Wadzanayi Stadium.
As a result, the PSL imposed a US$6,000 fine on Highlanders and awarded the match to Simba Bhora on a 3-0 scoreline.
The decision came after a review by a three-member disciplinary committee, which ruled that Highlanders violated Order 8.8 of the Chibuku Super Cup Rules and were responsible for the match abandonment.
The incident occurred in the 79th minute when the referee, Cecil Gwezera, and his assistant, Zondzi Ngosana, awarded a penalty to Simba Bhora following a clash between Highlanders’ Peter Muduhwa and Tinashe Balakasi.
However, video replays suggested that the incident took place outside the box.
Highlanders protested the penalty decision, leading to the eventual abandonment of the match. The ruling reads in part:

The defaulting team shall be banned from participating in the next edition of the Chibuku Super Cup.
No appeals may be lodged against these decisions.

Highlanders fans who commented on the abandoned match claimed that their club is being treated unfairly. Wrote Milton Manyevere on Facebook:

However, Dumisani Masilela believes that clubs must understand that the referee’s decision is final, and that walking off the pitch will not lead to any positive outcomes. He wrote:

Another soccer fan, Jay Godfrey, asserted that referees struggle to officiate Highlanders matches because the club’s fans are often prone to engaging in hooliganism. He said:

Highlanders Face Potential Expulsion And Ban From Chibuku Super Cup

The Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final between Simba Bhora and Highlanders at Wadzanai on Sunday, September 22, was abandoned after 79 minutes due to a controversial penalty decision by the referee.
According to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/simba-bhora-bosso-clash-abandoned/">The Herald</a>, referee Cecil Ngwezere called off the match after a 30-minute stoppage, during which Highlanders captain and goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda refused to return to goal in protest of the penalty awarded to Simba Bhora.
Before the penalty decision, there had already been a five-minute stoppage due to skirmishes in the stands.
When play resumed, it lasted only two minutes before Ngwezere awarded a penalty for an incident that appeared to have occurred outside the box, as confirmed by television replays.
The penalty was awarded following a collision between Highlanders centre-back Peter Muduhwa and substitute Tinashe Balakasi, who deceived the referee by falling inside the penalty area.
This prompted Highlanders players to protest and subsequently walk to their bench in discontent. When they returned, Sibanda still refused to take his position in goal.
After further attempts to engage Sibanda proved futile, the referee decided to end the match. The PSL disciplinary committee will now determine the outcome of the match to decide who will meet Ngezi Platinum Stars in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the winner of the Dynamos versus Yadah match will face Manica Diamonds in the other semi-final.
Manica Diamonds advanced by defeating FC Platinum 1-0 at Sakubva Stadium, with Tawanda Macheke scoring the decisive goal in the 17th minute and holding on until the final whistle.
The clash between Dynamos and Yadah was postponed due to Dynamos’ commitments in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Simba Bhora coach Tonderai Ndiraya expressed confidence that they would have won the match had play resumed. Said Ndiraya:

This is bad that we advertise local football in this way. The fans watching (on ZTN) and the fans paying their hard-earned money to come and be entertained but we give them this, it is very unfortunate.
Whilst I would not want to speak on behalf of Highlanders, I think it’s bad for our football.
Coming to the match itself, the first half was a bit of a balanced affair but I thought we had better scoring opportunities than Highlanders.
We were playing against the wind and it was difficult to defend but we defended resolutely and ended up creating those scoring chances at the other end.
When we came for the second half we changed and we were pushing forward, putting Highlanders under pressure, and because of that, they conceded the penalty.
Unfortunately, it had to end this way but I have a strong feeling we would have won the game if play had resumed. The referee’s decision is final and we have to respect it and move on.

Highlanders coach Kalvin Kaindu expressed disappointment that the match did not end properly, saying it was a bad advertisement for the game.

In a video filmed at the stadium, Ndoro acknowledged Highlanders’ storied legacy in Zimbabwean soccer, saying:

Donald Mudadi was simply unplayable on Wednesday as Dynamos cruised to a 3-1 victory over ZPC Kariba, kicking off their Chibuku Super Cup defence at Rufaro Stadium.
Under the guidance of veteran coach Lloyd “MaBlanyo” Chigowe, who stepped in as interim head coach after Genesis Mangombe’s resignation, DeMbare seems to have rediscovered their winning form.
Mudadi, a finalist for the 2023 Soccer Stars, delivered a man-of-the-match performance, playing a crucial role in all three of the Glamour Boys’ goals. He calmed any early nerves for Dynamos by slotting home in the 14th minute.
In addition to his goal, Mudadi assisted both Ghanaian forward Emmanuel Paga and Nomore Chinyerere.
Although Nyasha Gurende pulled one back for ZPC Kariba with a well-executed free-kick just four minutes from time, it was too little, too late for the visitors.
Chigowe heaped praise on Mudadi, who has recovered from a series of injuries that had hampered him earlier in the season. Said Chigowe:

Just five minutes later, in the 20th minute, Mudadi turned provider, racing from the centre circle to deliver a perfectly timed pass to Paga inside the box, who finished effortlessly after evading the offside trap.
Mudadi was again instrumental, threading a precise pass behind the ZPC Kariba defence to the left flank. Chinyerere reacted swiftly, sprinting into the box and slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Said Chigowe:

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Thursday, 01 August, conducted the 2024 Chibuku Super Cup preliminary and first-round draws.
Four lowest placed team as per the latest PSL table, Telone, Chegutu Pirates, Arenel Movers and Hwange, will start their campaign in the preliminary round.
The two winners from the preliminary round fixtures will join fourteen top-placed sides in the first round of the tournament.
