Tropical Cyclone Chido brought much-needed rainfall across Zimbabwe on Tuesday, as it combined with a mid-level cloud band from Botswana. Some areas experienced heavy downpours exceeding 60mm, while others received less than 15mm.
The system caused minimum disruption in Zimbabwe.
In contrast, the cyclone had a devastating impact on the Mayotte French Indian Ocean territory and Mozambique, where it caused numerous deaths and destroyed thousands of homes.
By the time Chido reached Zimbabwe, it had been downgraded to an overland depression, with low wind speeds and reduced intensity.
In an update on Tuesday, the Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe said:

Widespread thunderstorms occurred across the country with notable rainfall amounts recorded in Ruwa (64 mm), Marondera (49 mm), Shamva (38 mm), Lupane (34 mm), Zvishavane (26 mm), and Bulawayo Airport (15 mm), while the rest of the areas received less than 15 mm.

The Met Department has forecasted mild and cloudy weather across the country, with Matabeleland North and South, as well as the Bulawayo Metropolitan and Midlands regions, expected to experience morning rain on Wednesday.
In the afternoon, the Matabeleland provinces and Bulawayo Metropolitan area can anticipate cloudy and warm conditions, accompanied by scattered thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the rest of the country is expected to be partly cloudy and hot, with isolated thunderstorms.
While the majority of the country will see mild temperatures and partly cloudy skies throughout the day, the Met Department predicts that all of Matabeleland and the Bulawayo Metropolitan area will experience cloudy conditions with rain showers tonight.

According to the Meteorological Service Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe, the cyclone’s movement over land has resulted in reduced wind speeds and rainfall intensity due to increased frictional forces. Said the MSD:

On Sunday, December 15, 2024, at 0615hrs, Tropical Cyclone Chido (named by Zimbabwe) made landfall over northern Mozambique near Pemba in the Cabo Delgado Province.
The cyclone brought destructive winds exceeding 200km/hr and heavy rains with rainfall rates reaching 30mm per hour.
This resulted in flash flooding in the coastal area. Fortunately, Chido (no longer a cyclone but an overland depression) continued its west-south-westward movement into Tete Province still in northern Mozambique.

As of Monday, the residual moisture from the overland depression led to cloudy conditions in the northeastern parts of Zimbabwe, bringing light to moderate rainfall to Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces as early as 9 AM.
These remnants of moisture are expected to combine with the usual influx from the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, which typically brings rainfall to Zimbabwe starting in mid-December, along with a cloud band moving in from Botswana.
This combination is projected to result in moderate rainfall, ranging from 30 to 80 mm, across much of the country.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said Tropical Cyclone Chido is now expected to reach the country on Tuesday, following its weakening after making landfall in Mozambique on Sunday.
Tapiwa Masawi from the MSD told <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/cyclone-chido-weakens-to-reach-zimbabwe-tuesday/">ZBC News</a> on Monday that the cyclone was more powerful while it was over the ocean but lost strength upon making landfall in Mozambique early Sunday morning. Said Masawi:

Due to its interaction with the land and the terrain… by this morning it had further weakened. It was over the southern parts of Malawi and we are expecting it to reach Zimbabwe from Nyamapanda border post tomorrow, Tuesday 17 December 2024, where it will move from Nyamapanda Border Post to Murehwa and also some parts of Mashonaland Central that is Bindura, Shamva, Mazowe and also Harare Metropolitan Provinces that are expected to be affected by this system. We are expecting less destruction since the system has weakened.

As of 11 AM CAT on Monday, December 16, Tropical Cyclone Chido was located 154 km north-northwest of Nacala, Mozambique.
According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), the cyclone had been moving westward at a speed of 22 km/h (12 knots) over the past six hours.
Satellite imagery indicated that Chido made landfall approximately 28 km south of Pemba, Mozambique at 6 AM on Sunday. Said the JTWC:

The system, at the time of landfall, had a pinhole eye and a 15/02:53 UTC RCM-1 SAR image showed a vmax of around 220 km/h (120 knots) in a concentric ring 19 km out from the centre.
The system has very rapidly eroded as it moves inland due to terrain interaction and the compact size of the system.
Chido is forecast to track generally west-southwestward and continue rapidly weakening over the next 12 hours with more gradual weakening thereafter.
Dissipation is forecast to occur in 36 hours, and possibly sooner.

According to ZOOM Earth, the eye of Cyclone Chido was positioned just north of Blantyre, Malawi, as of noon on Monday.

The Kariba Lake level has generally continued to decline, with only minor fluctuations primarily influenced by rainfall in the lake and its immediate catchment area.
According to the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), as of December 11, 2024, the lake level stood at 475.91 meters, representing 2.89% of usable storage, compared to 477.21 meters (11.83% usable storage) recorded on the same date last year.
Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels of 475.50 meters and 488.50 meters above mean sea level, allowing for a freeboard of 0.70 meters for hydropower generation.
Meanwhile, the Kariba South Power Station, which has a 1,050MW installed capacity, was generating a paltry 124.5MW on Monday, December 16, according to the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC).

The cyclone brought winds of at least 226 kilometres per hour and caused extensive damage to makeshift housing.
Chido also hit the nearby islands of Comoros and Madagascar, with authorities in Comoros reporting that 11 fishers who ventured out to sea earlier this week are missing.
The intense tropical cyclone made landfall in Mozambique on Sunday and could affect up to 2.5 million people in the northern part of the country, as aid agencies warn of potential loss of life and severe damage.
A UNICEF spokesperson confirmed that Cabo Delgado, Mozambique’s northernmost province, home to approximately 2 million residents, has been severely affected, with many homes, schools, and health facilities either partially or completely destroyed. "Tropical Cyclone Chido To Bring Much-needed Rainfall"

James Ngoma, head of forecasting at the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), said on Friday that Tropical Cyclone Chido is expected to make landfall in Mutoko, located in northeastern Zimbabwe, on Monday from midday, going into Tuesday.
During a press briefing at the Department of Civil Protection in Harare, Ngoma said that Chido is likely to be less destructive upon reaching Mutoko than it has been in the Indian Ocean, where it is currently causing a lot of destruction. He said:

We are approximating that it will reach Zimbabwe from 16 December from around noon going into the 17th of December.
The cyclone was expected to make its first contact with land in Madagascar’s Antsiranana at 2 PM today before it starts making its way to Mozambique, then to Zimbabwe in three days.
Current position, it’s just to the northeast of Madagascar, and it’s going to touch a city called Antsiranana which is to the extreme north of Madagascar and what speed is it travelling at?
It’s moving at 20 kilometres per hour. That’s the speed at which it’s moving laterally, but it doesn’t involve the spin speed.
It’s 1,919 kilometres from Mutoko. The effects will be felt whilst it’s still in Mozambique and parts of Malawi.

Ngoma said six provinces, that is, Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, as well as Harare Metropolitan, are currently on the watch list. He said:

All of them are in the watch category. They are not yet in the alert category. Once we move into the alert, we will remove some of the provinces and we will specify maybe even the ones that will be affected most.
I think most of us remember the Tropical Cyclone Fred which did a dance around in Zimbabwe, went to Mozambique, then ended up in Malawi and caused devastation there. So these cyclones can move in a haphazard manner, especially when they touch land.

The cyclone is likely to lose energy as it navigates through different countries and as a result it will reach Zimbabwe moving at 45 knots (83.3 kilometres per hour). Said Ngoma:

So the current wind speeds that it’s spinning at is between 210 to 220 kilometres per hour. That is whilst it’s still close to Madagascar.
And with these wind speeds, the destruction is unimaginable. You get trees being pulled out, roofs being blown off, waters being carried from the ocean onto land, and disasters are unproportional.
But when it reaches Zimbabwe, it’s projected to be moving at about 45 kilometres to about 50 kilometres per hour.
But this might change. So we’ll continue to monitor this and advise you better as the weekend progresses.
And from there, we’ll know how it’s been deflected or what effects that landmass has had on the cyclone.
And then we can predict better in terms of rainfall, in terms of direction, in terms of whichever path it will take.

Zimbabwe is facing the prospect of another drought, which could exacerbate hunger for millions already affected by an El Niño-induced drought, the UN World Food Programme said on Thursday.
Earlier this year, Zimbabwe and several neighbouring countries declared a state of disaster due to severe food shortages caused by the worst drought in 40 years.
While rainfall was expected to begin in October, marking the start of the typical six-month rainy season, Zimbabwe has only experienced a few days of rain in late November.

Meanwhile, the Department of Civil Protection has urged citizens to be vigilant for heavy rains, thunderstorms, strong winds, potential flooding, rockfalls, and mudflows.
The public is advised to secure their homes against damaging winds and to establish evacuation plans in preparation for severe weather conditions.
Tropical Cyclone Chido is the third low-pressure system that has threatened Southern Africa this year.
The first storm of the 2024-2025 cyclone season in the southwest Indian Ocean, named Ancha, was designated by the Comoros.
Following this, Cyclone Bheki was named by Eswatini. The name Chido was provided by Zimbabwe.
If another storm forms before the season ends, it will be named Dikeledi, designated by South Africa.
Each year, tropical cyclones are named in alphabetical order, alternating between male and female names.
The list of names is proposed by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) members in a specific region and is approved by the corresponding tropical cyclone regional bodies during their annual or biannual sessions.
Zimbabwe has also provided the name Yemurai for the 25th storm of the season.

In an advisory, the MSD said that Severe Tropical Storm Chido, which hasn’t gained enough strength to be classified as a Tropical Cyclone, is currently more than 3,000 kilometres away from Zimbabwe. The MSD said:

The third tropical system of the 2024/2025 cyclone season (Severe Tropical Storm Chido) has developed in the Indian Ocean and is travelling Westwards at a speed of 13km/h towards Madagascar where it is expected to arrive on the 13th of December 2024.
The system has not yet reached the cyclone stage but it is strengthening. It is expected to reach Mozambique on the 17th of December if it maintains its trajectory. The MSD will continue to monitor its progress and update the nation accordingly.

Forecast models indicate that the storm will strengthen as it continues westward and passes just south of Agalega, Mauritius, late Dec. 11.
Chido is expected to briefly strengthen into an intense tropical cyclone as it tracks westward and then west-southwestward away from Agalega on Dec. 12, before weakening back into a tropical cyclone and making landfall over the northern Diana Region in Madagascar late Dec. 13-early Dec. 14.
The system is likely to weaken into a severe tropical storm as it tracks southwestward across the Mozambique Channel Dec. 14-15, passing south of Mayotte late Dec. 14 or early Dec. 15.
The storm will continue to weaken before making another landfall over Nampula Province in Mozambique late Dec. 15 or early Dec. 16.
After landfall, Chido is expected to weaken rapidly into a zone of disturbed weather and dissipate as it tracks southwestward inland over southern Nampula during the morning of Dec. 16.
Some uncertainty remains in the track and intensity forecast; changes could occur in the coming hours and days.

A tropical cyclone has formed over the southwestern Indian Ocean, approximately 1,332 kilometres off the coast of Madagascar.
Tropical Cyclone Chido has recorded maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h (55 knots) and gusts reaching up to 130 km/h.
According to the SADC Climate Services Centre, the potential for Chido to develop into a Category 3 cyclone within the next 24 hours is high.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall in northern Madagascar, bringing with it heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions.
Following its initial impact on Madagascar, Chido is predicted to re-intensify and affect the Comoros and Mozambique.  Said the SADC Climate Services Centre:

Our forecasts indicate severe weather conditions in these areas, and we are urging residents to prepare accordingly.

In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tropical-cyclone-chido-not-a-threat-to-zim/">The Herald</a>, Meteorological Services Department head of forecasting James Ngoma said in Zimbabwe, Tropical Storm Chido’s distance and trajectory (or current path) is too far and too distant to be of concern.
Ngoma said the country is expecting to get rains at the weekend. He said:

The storms we are anticipating are the ones from the opposite side in Botswana, which should enter through Matabeleland provinces as we get into the weekend. So in essence, it’s a wet weekend but due to storms from Botswana, and not Chido.

Tropical Cyclone Chido is the third low-pressure system that has threatened Southern Africa this year.
The first storm of the 2024-2025 cyclone season in the southwest Indian Ocean, named Ancha, was designated by the Comoros.
Following this, Cyclone Bheki was named by Eswatini. The name Chido was provided by Zimbabwe.
If another storm forms before the season ends, it will be named Dikeledi, designated by South Africa.
Each year, tropical cyclones are named in alphabetical order, alternating between male and female names.
The list of names is proposed by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) members in a specific region and is approved by the corresponding tropical cyclone regional bodies during their annual or biannual sessions.
Zimbabwe has also provided the name Yemurai for the 25th storm of the season.

Two moderate earthquakes struck Kariba last Thursday leaving the community shaken and deeply unsettled.
The first tremor, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, hit around 3:00 AM, followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 3.7 at approximately 9:36 AM.
Both earthquakes were strongly felt in Kariba town, especially in areas close to the dam wall, where the tremors seemed more intense.
Residents who spoke to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036041/kariba-residents-rattled-by-twin-earthquakes">NewsDay</a> described the experience as both frightening and unsettling.
A resident, Tracy Martin said there was a loud rumbling and the ground shook. She said:

Another resident said: “We felt the earthquake and buildings were shaking while most people were awokened by the incident”.

The Kariba region has experienced increased seismic activity due to the presence of the Kariba Dam.
The dam, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, has been associated with induced seismicity since its filling in the 1960s.

Kariba Hit By Back-to-Back Tremors

A viral social media post claiming that a severe heat wave is set to hit Southern Africa starting Thursday, December 5, has been debunked as false.
The post warned that “starting from today, a brutal heat wave will sweep Southern Africa especially Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi with up to 40/45C for 10+ days and also very hot nights, potentially the worst heat wave in SE Africa history, many records will be crushed. Stay hydrated”.
However, ZIMCAST has dismissed the post as misleading, saying the temperatures forecasted for today and tomorrow do not exceed those experienced in previous years. ZIMCAST said:

In a weather update released on Wednesday afternoon, the Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe stated that the ongoing dry spell is expected to persist, resulting in hot conditions across much of the country.
The department indicated that Thursday will be sunny and hot throughout Zimbabwe, while Friday is forecasted to remain mostly sunny and hot, with brief clouds anticipated in Matabeleland South and Bulawayo Province.
Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has reported that 2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record, with the global average temperature for January to September rising approximately 1.54°C above pre-industrial levels.
Vox weather meteorologist Annette Botha told <a href="https://www.citizen.co.za/news/scorching-heat-heatwave-temperatures/">The Citizen</a>, a South African newspaper, that the high temperatures currently experienced in the neighbouring country can be attributed to a weak La Niña phenomenon. She said:

These higher temperatures are supported by the forecast of ENSO [El Niño–Southern Oscillation]-neutral conditions that may move towards a weak La Niña, which often leads to warmer temperatures.
It is important to note that a weak La Niña does not necessarily bring the typical colder and wetter conditions usually associated with it.
Instead, it could cause drier and warmer conditions in certain regions, including South Africa. Less cloud cover, increased solar radiation and the general warming trend of the earth play a role in the observation of higher temperatures, even during weak La Niña events.

Claims Of Extreme Heat Wave In Southern Africa Dismissed As Misleading

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has urged the public to be on high alert when the current dry spell ends and rainfall activity resumes, with forecasts indicating possible hailstorms and heavy winds.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/rains-to-return-in-a-week-met-dept/">ZBC News</a>, Meteorologist Baba Maketa advised farmers to make use of the dry spell for tasks such as weeding and other farming operations, as normal to above-normal rains are expected from this month through February next year.
Maketa said that although a dry spell is anticipated over the next seven days, farmers should continue their activities as the overall season remains favourable for agricultural operations. He said:

Our season as per our advisory is still fine, nothing has changed. From December up to February next year, we still forecast normal to above rainfall, but as the rains come back it will likely be associated with thunderstorms and heavy downpours hence people should be on high alert.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning about a dry and hot spell set to affect most parts of Zimbabwe starting tomorrow, Saturday, November 30.
In a weather advisory issued on Thursday, November 29, the MSD said the dry conditions are expected to last until December 11, 2024, leading to a reduction in rainfall across the country.
The Met Department said the relatively dry and hot conditions are a result of a cool, moist south-easterly airflow entering the region this Friday.
Despite the dry conditions, light rain and drizzle are expected in Matabeleland South and Masvingo provinces on Friday. The MSD said:

Starting Friday, November 29, 2024, a cool moist southeasterly airflow should reduce the occurrence of thunderstorm activities.
However, light rain and drizzle should be experienced in Matabeleland South and Masvingo Provinces on Saturday, November 30.

Tropical Cyclone Bheki continued its southwest movement over the southern Indian Ocean towards Mauritius on November 18, with maximum sustained winds reaching 201 km/h, though it slightly weakened.
According to <a href="https://reliefweb.int/report/mauritius/mauritius-reunion-tropical-cyclone-bheki-update-gdacs-meteo-france-la-reunion-echo-daily-flash-19-november-2024">Reliefweb</a>, as of November 19 at 6:00 UTC, the cyclone’s centre was located approximately 1,000 km northeast of Mauritius and 1,220 km northeast of Réunion, France, with maximum sustained winds of 137 km/h.
Bheki is expected to continue southwest as a tropical storm on November 19-20, passing close to Rodrigues Island, Mauritius, early on November 20 with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h.
The cyclone is forecast to approach Mauritius and Réunion closely on the morning of November 21, maintaining the same maximum sustained winds.
Heavy rainfall is expected over Mauritius, Rodrigues Island, and Réunion over the next 96 hours.

BHEKI is expected to continue its southwest trajectory, passing north of Rodrigues Island on 19 November. On 20 and 21 November, it will approach Mauritius as a tropical storm and later near Réunion as a tropical depression.
As a result, heavy rainfall and strong winds are anticipated across Rodrigues Island on 19 November, followed by similar weather conditions for Mauritius and Réunion on 20 and 21 November.

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, the host country for COP29, made headlines at the UN climate conference by describing oil and gas as a “gift of God” and defending his country’s fossil fuel reserves.
In his speech, Aliyev criticized what he referred to as “Western fake news” regarding Azerbaijan’s emissions, asserting that nations with fossil fuel resources should not be blamed for their existence, reported <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpqd1rzw9r4o">BBC News</a>.
Azerbaijan, which plans to expand its gas production by up to a third over the next decade, has faced scrutiny in the lead-up to COP29.
Observers worried that Azerbaijani officials may use the conference to promote investment in the national oil and gas sector, particularly given the prominence of the country’s oil industry in its economy.
The conference’s chairman is Azerbaijan’s Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources, who has a background as a former oil executive with 26 years of experience at Socar, Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil and gas company.
On the second day of the conference, Aliyev responded to criticisms, claiming that Azerbaijan had faced “slander and blackmail” from Western media, charities, and politicians ahead of the event.
He argued that Azerbaijan’s share of global gas emissions is minimal, stating that it accounts for “only 0.1%.” Said Aliyev:

This has become one of the central issues of COP29, as nations from the Global South demand more substantial financial commitments from wealthier countries.
However, key leaders from some of the world’s largest polluters, including U.S. President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were absent from the conference in Baku.
This absence has raised questions about the level of commitment from major polluting countries to tackle climate change on the global stage.
At the conference, Burkina Faso’s environment minister, Roger Baro, stressed the urgent need for increased financial support to help countries in the Sahel and other regions combat the devastating impacts of climate change, including droughts, floods, and disease outbreaks.
The Sahel region, in particular, has been reeling from extreme weather events, including a heatwave that saw temperatures soar to 45°C—an event that scientists have attributed to climate change.
Meanwhile, the UN’s World Meteorological Organisation has warned that 2024 is on track to become the warmest year on record.
COP29 is set to continue until November 22, but with complex and contentious issues on the agenda, reaching a final agreement on climate finance and other critical matters remains uncertain.

Oil And Gas Are A "Gift Of God", Says UN Climate Summit Host

A Grade 3 learner from Mahindi Primary School in Mberengwa District, Midlands Province, tragically lost her life when a grocery store collapsed while she was seeking shelter from heavy rain on Monday evening.
Mberengwa District Development Coordinator Vafias Hlabati confirmed that the girl, wearing her school uniform, was struck by falling rubble and died on the spot.
Meanwhile, at Zvemukonde Secondary School, 14 other learners were injured when a classroom block lost its roof due to the storm.
Hlabati said that the learners were hit by roofing sheets and were taken to Zvishavane District Hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, by Tuesday morning, all the injured learners had been treated and discharged.
The severe weather caused significant damage across the district, affecting 21 schools, two district hospitals, and 54 homesteads.
The district has reached out to the provincial office for assistance, as lessons and examinations at the impacted schools have been disrupted.
In addition to the classroom damage at Zvemukonde Secondary, Hlabati said Mnene Hospital, the main referral health facility in the district, also suffered damage, with some wards losing their roofs and water tanks being affected. He said:

It’s a serious disaster, we also have over 50 homesteads which were damaged and villagers are staying in the open. We are mobilising tents and food for the affected families but we are overwhelmed.

Mberengwa District is seeking approval to arrange alternative shelter for examination candidates who have been left stranded due to damage to their schools.
Besides Zvemukonde Secondary, several other schools were affected, including Masase High, Mnene High, Mbuyanehanda High, Jena Primary, Chimbapire Primary, Ngezi Primary, Chebvute Primary, and Chemakudo Primary.
Hlabati said that he held an emergency meeting with the Provincial Civil Protection Unit to address the situation.
The Meteorological Services Department has forecast localised downpours across the country from Monday through Friday.

In a weather advisory issued on Sunday, 10 November, the MSD warned that heavy rainfall, exceeding 50mm, is expected in the southern parts of Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, and Harare Metropolitan Provinces on Wednesday. Said the MSD:

A cloud band entered the country from the west on Sunday the 10th of November 2024 bringing moisture over all Matabeleland and Bulawayo Metropolitan provinces.
On Monday evening, 11 November more moisture should be driven in from the South-East coast of Southern Africa.
This should result in more rainfall in Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces on Tuesday 12 November 2024.
By Wednesday 13 November, the rain-showers should be heavier in the southern parts of Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East and Harare Metropolitan Provinces; with some of the rainfall being in excess of 50mm in 24 hours from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 November 2024.

In its latest weather report, the MSD confirmed that on Thursday, the public can expect cloudy, rainy, thundery, and windy weather throughout much of the country. It said:

The weather department says it will be cloudy and rainy across the country on Thursday. Thunderstorms were reported on Wednesday. The south will be windy and cool. On Friday, it will be mostly cloudy and windy in the south, and cooler in the north. There may be isolated thunderstorms in some areas. People should be prepared for rainy and thundery weather. The weather will be warm in most places. Matabeleland South, Midlands, Masvingo, and Manicaland will be windy.

Met Department Forecasts Cloudy And Rainy Conditions

International weather forecasters have downgraded predictions for La Niña’s formation and intensity, suggesting that southern Africa may not receive as much rainfall as initially hoped.
Last summer’s El Niño caused severe drought and crop failures, resulting in widespread food aid requirements.
There were high hopes that La Niña would follow, bringing good rains, but forecasts have become increasingly pessimistic.
In its bi-weekly outlook, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a bleak report on Tuesday about La Niña forming in 2024, raising concerns about another poor season for summer grain crops in southern Africa. It said:

… the chance of a La Niña event developing in the coming months has decreased compared to recent outlooks.
If a La Niña were to develop, it is likely to be relatively weak and short-lived, with all models forecasting neutral values by February.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a natural climate pattern affecting global weather. ENSO is currently in its neutral phase.
The El Niño phase occurs when ocean waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual, leading to increased rainfall in some areas (like the western coast of South America) and droughts in others (like Southern Africa).
La Niña, the opposite phase, is characterised by cooler-than-normal ocean waters in the same region and often brings drier conditions to South America and wetter conditions to Southern Africa.
In the neutral phase, ocean temperatures and weather patterns are closer to average, with no significant warming or cooling.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology suggests that if La Niña forms, its impact may be limited and could dissipate by February.
Other global forecasters are also adjusting their expectations for La Niña. A US government forecaster recently indicated that the likelihood of La Niña forming has been reduced and, if it does occur, it is expected to last until March.
A weak La Niña or a summer in the neutral zone does not necessarily mean this region will experience another drought.

Weather experts have changed their minds about the rainy season in southern Africa. They thought a weather pattern called La Niña would bring lots of rain, but now they are not so sure. Downgraded La Niña Forecasts Spark Fears Of Another Drought In Southern Africa

Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds have caused damage in various parts of the country this month.
While precipitation has generally been light, Kwekwe recorded 15mm and Nyanga reported 44mm of rainfall.
In a statement, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works said the thunderstorms have affected several schools across the country.
At Chirumba Secondary School in Bikita District (Masvingo), strong winds caused a fallen tree to damage the roofs of Blair toilets and teachers’ houses on Thursday, but no casualties were reported.
Heavy rains and strong winds at Mataga Growth Point in Mberengwa District led to the roofs being blown off the classroom blocks at Chamakudo and Remiti Primary Schools, affecting nearby homesteads as well.
In Mashonaland East, a strong wind on Wednesday blew off the roof of a computer laboratory block at Kagande Secondary School in Mutoko District.
The following day, a violent storm in Hwedza District damaged classroom blocks at Joseph Munzverengi Secondary School by blowing off the roof.
In Matabeleland South, heavy rains and strong winds in Matobo District (Ward 23) damaged six homesteads, with four suffering severe damage.
A storm in Ward 7 of Beitbridge District destroyed solar panels and crops valued at approximately R100,000 at an irrigation scheme in Luwade Village, Beitbridge West Constituency.
Recently, James Ngoma, the head of forecasting at the Meteorological Services Department, said that the department anticipates rainfall levels returning to near-normal as the El Niño phenomenon begins to fade. He said:

Earlier this year, we experienced El Niño conditions, but we are now transitioning into a neutral phase, which should bring us closer to typical rainfall patterns.
We expect to see more normal to above-normal rains as we progress into the sub-seasons of the main season.

For the first time in 50 years, the Sahara Desert experienced severe flooding following two days of continuous rainfall in southeastern Morocco last week, dramatically altering the landscape.
According to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/etimes/trending/rare-rainfall-in-the-sahara-desert-after-50-years-heres-why/articleshow/114178120.cms">Times of India</a>, the regions around Tata and the village of Tagounite, approximately 450 kilometres from Rabat, were among the hardest hit, with Tagounite receiving 100 millimetres of rain in a single day—more than the annual rainfall for many areas.
The significant rainfall led to the filling of Lake Iriqui, which had been dry since 1925, showcasing a stunning transformation captured in satellite images.
Meteorologists indicate that this rare rainfall may signal changing climate patterns, with experts noting that such heavy rains have not been observed for decades.
While the rains provided relief after a prolonged drought for local farmers, they also resulted in at least 18 fatalities and significant crop destruction.
In response to the disaster, the Moroccan government has initiated emergency relief efforts, particularly in areas still recovering from last year’s earthquake.
Despite the immediate benefits of replenishing groundwater and aiding farmers, experts warn of increased risks from extreme weather due to global warming in the expansive Sahara Desert.
Celeste Saulo, head of the World Meteorological Organization, highlighted the unpredictable nature of the global water cycle, posing challenges for regions worldwide as extreme weather events become more frequent.

Sahara Desert Experiences First Floods In 50 Years

Washington Zhakata, acting Permanent Secretary for Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, has been appointed vice board chair of the Adaptation Fund under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zhakata-lands-top-un-fund-post/">The Herald</a>.
The Adaptation Fund finances concrete adaptation projects and programmes in developing countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol and particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
Since its inception in 2010, the Adaptation Fund has committed over US$1.2 billion to climate change adaptation and resilience projects, benefiting more than 45 million people through over 176 localized projects in vulnerable communities.
The fund pioneered the Direct Access model, allowing countries to directly access funding and develop projects through accredited national implementing entities.
The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) of Zimbabwe has been accredited as a National Implementing Entity to manage climate funds from the Adaptation Fund.
Approved projects include a US$5 million project aimed at “enhancing resilience of communities and ecosystems in the face of a changing climate in arid and semi-arid areas of Zimbabwe” and is being implemented through EMA.
Another US$5 million project focused on “increasing local communities’ adaptive capacity and resilience to climate change through increased groundwater exploitation in Zimbabwe” has also been approved and is being implemented through UNESCO.
Another US$10 million window is still available for Zimbabwe.
Zhakata is the Director of the Climate Change Management Department and vice chair of the Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe, which handles nuclear security.
He holds a Master of Science degree in Atmospheric Physics, along with other postgraduate qualifications. 
Zhakata has extensive experience, having previously worked for the Meteorological Services Department and served as a lecturer in the Geography and Environmental Science Department at the University of Zimbabwe for nearly 15 years.
He also worked as the National Programme Coordinator for Climate Change with UNDP.

Washington Zhakata has been chosen as the vice chairman of the UN Adaptation Fund. This fund helps countries affected by climate change. Since 2010, it has given over $1.2 billion to projects helping 45 million people. Zimbabwe is one of the countries that has received funding for climate projects. Zhakata has a lot of experience in climate work and holds a Master's degree in Atmospheric Physics. He is excited to help countries deal with the effects of climate change.

Zhakata Appointed Vice Board Chairman Of UN Adaptation Fund

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecast thundery weather for the northern regions of the country from Sunday, October 13, until Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
In a weather advisory issued on October 11, the MSD warned that the southern parts of the country—specifically Masvingo, Manicaland, Matabeleland South, and the southern areas of the Midlands provinces—should expect cloudy, cold, and drizzly conditions starting Tuesday evening and continuing until Thursday morning. Said the MSD:

Moisture is expected to drift into the northern parts of the country namely Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central provinces early on Sunday morning, 13 October 2024.
This should quickly spread into the northern Midlands, Harare Metropolitan and all Mashonaland provinces and intensify slightly, on Tuesday 15 October 2024, resulting in isolated light showers coupled with lightning and thunder and windy.
Anticipate a significant strengthening of relatively cool winds, from the south-east coast of Southern Africa, on Tuesday evening.
This should steer a cool and moist southeasterly airflow into Zimbabwe resulting in cloudy, windy and cool weather over Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland provinces as well as southern part of the Midlands on Wednesday 16 October 2024. Light rain and drizzle is probable in (some) places.

Meanwhile, Civil Protection Unit director Nathan Nkomo said that a disaster contingency plan for the 2024/25 rainy season is already established.
He stated that a two-day planning meeting with over 70 participants from various sectors reviewed the current contingency based on SADC regional weather projections and MSD data. They are now prepared to implement the plan when the rains arrive.

The weather forecast said that the northern regions will have thunderstorms from Sunday to Wednesday. The southern regions will be cloudy, cold, and drizzly from Tuesday to Thursday. The winds will get stronger in the south, bringing cool weather. The Civil Protection Unit is ready for the rainy season with a contingency plan based on weather predictions. Over 70 people from different sectors met for two days to review the plan and prepare for when the rains come.

Met Department Forecasts Thunderstorms In Northern Regions, Drizzly Conditions For Southern Regions

The government has indicated that the start of the 2024/25 rain season will be delayed, with October—typically the month when rains begin—expected to remain relatively dry.
Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Sithembiso Nyoni, said that Zimbabwe will experience “normal to above normal rainfall” in 2024/25 starting next month.
According to a post-cabinet update from Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, October is projected to be drier than the long-term average. He said:

Cabinet also received a brief on the 2024/2025 Seasonal Rainfall Forecast for Zimbabwe as presented by the Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Honourable Dr Sithembiso Nyoni.
Cabinet would like to advise that during the 2024/2025 summer season the country is expected to receive normal to above normal rainfall.
However, the month of October is expected to be drier than the long term average, but from November onwards the forecast is for normal to above normal rainfall.
Farmers and the whole nation are guided to plan accordingly.

Zimbabwe faced its most severe drought in 40 years during the 2023/24 season, which weather experts linked to El Niño.
The inadequate rainfall from the previous season impacted agricultural yields, putting 20 per cent of the country’s 15 million residents at risk of famine, according to the World Food Programme.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecast a decrease in daytime temperatures across Matabeleland South, Masvingo, Manicaland, and the southern parts of Midlands Province from Monday, September 30, to Thursday, October 3.
In a weather advisory issued on Friday morning in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, the MSD indicated that maximum temperatures are expected to remain below 19°C.
During this period, the southern Midlands, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and Manicaland provinces are anticipated to experience windy, cool, cloudy, and drizzly conditions from September 30 to October 2.
Starting Thursday, October 3, the weather is expected to become less cloudy and warmer. Said the MSD:

A significant strengthening of relatively cool winds, from the south-east coast of Southern Africa, is expected on Monday evening 30 September 2024. 
This should steer a cool and moist southeasterly airflow into Zimbabwe on Tuesday 01 October 2024, resulting in cloudy, windy and cool weather over Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces as well as southern part of the Midlands on Tuesday 01 and Wednesday 02 October 2024. Light rain and drizzle is probable in places.
Anticipate scattered clouds and mild conditions to drift into Bulawayo Metropolitan, southern parts of Matabeleland North and Midlands as well as both Harare and Mashonaland East Provinces on Wednesday 02 October 2024.
It will only become warmer from Thursday 03 October 2024 as the clouds break.
