Health and Child Care Minister, Douglas Mombeshora, assured the public that Zimbabwe has enough stock of anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs to last for the next six months.
He also said that efforts to procure additional supplies to cover the remainder of the year are already underway.
Mombeshora made the remarks during Wednesday’s question time in the National Assembly, where lawmakers raised concerns following the global suspension of development and humanitarian aid by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The minister said the Government is committed to safeguarding the country’s progress in combating HIV and AIDS. He said:

We are doing everything to ensure that we don’t reverse the gains we have made in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
As a matter of policy, we already have supplies of the ARVs for the next six months and procurement processes to get drugs that will last until the end of the year is already underway.

Mombeshora added that even if the U.S. government were to reverse its policy, it would not impact the contingency measures implemented by the Government. He said:

We will soon come to this August House seeking your support for additional funding to ensure that there are no disruptions in the supply of the drugs.
</blockquote>
Mombeshora revealed that 31 per cent of the country’s ARVs were procured through U.S. funding, while the remainder were purchased by the Government through the National Aids Council and other development partners.
Zimbabwe achieved the 95-95-95 targets in 2022, which aim to ensure that 95 per cent of people living with HIV are aware of their status, 95 per cent are receiving treatment, and 95 per cent of those on treatment have a suppressed viral load.

Zimbabwe Has Enough ARVs For Six Months - Health Minister

The Ministry of Health and Childcare has released its Weekly Disease Report for the week ending 02 February 2025, providing updates on various health concerns across the country.
Influenza/Common Cold: 
A total of 3,912 suspected cases of influenza/common cold were reported this week, with no deaths. Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces recorded the highest number of cases, with 1,439 and 967 cases, respectively. The cumulative total stands at 13,471 suspected cases, with no reported deaths.
Measles: 
Seven new suspected cases of measles were reported, with no suspected deaths. Harare Province reported three cases, Mashonaland Central two, and Mashonaland East and Mashonaland each reported one. The cumulative number of suspected measles cases is now 34, with no deaths.
Common Diarrhoea: 
A total of 8,464 cases of common diarrhoea were reported, with no deaths. Of these, 3,358 cases were from children under 5 years old. The provinces with the highest number of cases were Mashonaland Central (1,178) and Mashonaland East (1,157). Cumulatively, there have been 35,265 cases and 17 deaths.
Malaria: 
There were 2,009 reported cases of malaria this week, along with six deaths. The highest number of cases were reported in Manicaland (824) and Mashonaland West (527). The provinces also saw several deaths, including two in Mutare District, one in Chimanimani, Buhera, Rushinga, and Makonde Districts. The cumulative figures for malaria cases are 5,710 with 17 deaths, and the cumulative case fatality rate (CFR) stands at 0.3%.
Cholera: 
This week, 24 suspected cases of cholera and one suspected death were reported. The majority of suspected cases (23) were from Mazowe District. Cumulative figures for cholera now stand at 107 suspected cases, with one suspected death, but no confirmed cases or deaths.
Dysentery: 
A total of 545 dysentery cases were reported, with no deaths. Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland West provinces reported the highest numbers of cases, with 114 and 97, respectively. The cumulative total for dysentery cases is now 2,416, with one death.
Typhoid: 
No suspected cases or deaths from typhoid were reported this week. The cumulative total for suspected typhoid cases remains at two, with no deaths, resulting in a cumulative CFR of 0%.

The Health Ministry says many people in Zimbabwe are getting sick. 

- Thousands of people have flu and colds, but no one has died. 
- Some kids have measles, but no kids have died. 
- Lots of people have diarrhea, and sadly, 17 people have died. 
- Malaria is also a big problem, with 17 people dead. 
- There are only a few cases of cholera and dysentery, but one person died from dysentery. 
- Thankfully, there are no cases of typhoid.

Health Ministry Reports Spike In Malaria And Diarrhoea Cases

The dire state of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system was starkly exposed last week following a tragic bus accident in Beitbridge.
Victims of the crash, which resulted in 25 fatalities and dozens of injuries, were photographed at a local hospital with broken bones held together by makeshift casts made from cardboard, sellotape, and cloth.
The accident occurred last Thursday when a speeding Beitbridge-bound Urban Connect bus collided head-on with a haulage truck carrying magnesium to Chirundu near the Lutumba toll gate on the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway.
Images shared online depicted the victims lying helplessly while medical staff, working tirelessly, tried to save lives under incredibly difficult conditions.
Transport Minister Felix Tapiwa Mhona, Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, and Matabeleland South Provincial Minister Eveline Ndlovu visited Beitbridge District Hospital, where they were photographed with the accident victims.
The sight of accident victims’ limbs being held together with cardboard and tape during a photo op was widely condemned as a heartless public relations stunt.
Further investigation revealed that the Urban Connect bus was operating without a valid route permit, and the driver did not have a valid retest certificate.
Renowned lawyer and former Mt Pleasant MP, Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, sharply criticized the government for neglecting the health sector. She said:

We are not letting this healthcare issue go. Why is the practice of using makeshift cardboard boxes to treat fractures so widespread in our public hospitals? Where is the dignity?
Surely, you must all resign. This level of incompetence borders on the criminal. It’s a mess. We need new leaders.

In another post on X on Sunday, February 16, 2025, Mahere criticized the government for its failure to provide basic supplies in hospitals. She wrote:

They promised us affordable, quality healthcare. Instead, they have given us cardboard boxes to use as casts to treat fractures, no clean water in public hospitals, torn hospital beds and no medication. It’s a mess.

ZANU PF loyalist Kudzai Mutisi, based in South Africa, also weighed in, criticizing his own party’s ministers as ineffective and incapable of providing even the most basic services to the people. He said:

A Cabinet Minister is witnessing FIRST HAND how his colleague in the Ministry of Health and Child Care has FAILED to do simple things. Felix Mhona will leave the hospital and SAY NOTHING about a dysfunctional system he witnessed.
In fact, he might join the 2030ists asking for more time to play. If you can’t do it now, then you certainly won’t do it even if given 40 more years. The current team of ministers lacks urgency and has misplaced priorities.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube has said the government will rely on locally generated revenue to sustain the health sector following the withdrawal of key external funding, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zim-turns-to-local-resources-to-fund-health-sector-amid-us-funding-withdrawal/">The Herald</a>.
Recently, the United States suspended funding for vital health programs, including HIV interventions under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
PEPFAR, the leading funder of HIV programs, had committed US$210 million to Zimbabwe in 2024 and an additional US$200 million for the period from October 2024 to September 2025.
To offset this loss, Ncube said that the government plans to use “sin taxes”—levies on alcohol, cigarettes, fast food, and sugary beverages—to support the health sector. He said:

We have quite a portfolio of various taxes that will be applied towards the budget needs of the health sector.
Of course, the actions taken by certain donors to withdraw funding put pressure on us, but with the resources raised from these sin taxes, we believe we can address some of the challenges.
This is a continuous budget implementation process. Where there is a need, we provide funding. I am pleased that we have a dedicated revenue stream from sin taxes that we can apply specifically to the health sector.

It remains unclear how much revenue is generated through sin taxes and the AIDS Levy, and whether these funds can fill the gap left by the suspension of international aid, especially given Zimbabwe’s economic challenges and high disease burden.
Shortly after taking office in January, U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO) and suspended foreign assistance for 90 days as part of a shift in foreign aid policy.
It is uncertain what will happen after the 90 days, including whether U.S. funding will be halted or resumed, and under what conditions.

Zimbabwe is facing a problem because the United States is no longer giving money to help with healthcare. To make up for this, the government is going to tax things like alcohol, cigarettes, and fast food to get money for healthcare. The US had given a lot of money before, and now that it's gone, Zimbabwe needs to find other ways to pay for important programs, like those that help with HIV. It's not clear how much money these new taxes will bring in, or if it will be enough to help with all the health problems in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Turns To "Sin Taxes" To Fund Health Sector After U.S. Cuts Aid

The Population Solutions for Health (PSH) New Start Centre in Harare’s CBD has temporarily stopped some of its services.
Patients who need ART (HIV treatment) or PrEP (HIV prevention) refills won’t be able to get them at the centre for now.
On Thursday, the centre was only offering HIV testing. Other services like family planning and cervical cancer screening were also put on hold.
A notice at the entrance advised people to go to their local clinics for the services they need. It reads:

Please note that the New Start Centre is temporarily closed. For those due for (Antiretroviral Treatment) ART or PrEP refills, please proceed to the nearest city health clinic for assistance. Thank you for understanding.

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medicine that helps people at high risk of getting HIV from not getting infected.
According to officials at the New Start Centre who spoke to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/new-start-centre-suspends-art-prep-refills/">NewZimbabwe</a>, the only service available right now is HIV testing.
Normally, the centre offers various health services like HIV testing, PrEP, TB screening and treatment, cervical cancer screening and treatment, birth control, and STI screening and treatment.
The suspension of the services follows the recent 90-day suspension of USAID funding resulting from the implementation of President Donald Trump’s America First policy.
The US helps Zimbabwe fight HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases by providing money for things like condoms and antiretroviral drugs used in local hospitals.

The New Start Centre in Harare has stopped giving HIV treatment and prevention services for now. Patients can only get HIV testing. People needing ART or PrEP should go to their local clinic. PrEP is a medicine that stops people from getting HIV. The US stopped funding for HIV services in Zimbabwe for 90 days. New Start Centre Suspends ART, PrEP Services

Zimbabwe’s development landscape has been rocked by the imminent removal of USAID support, which might undo hard-won progress in economic stability, food security, and public health.
The threat of USAID’s withdrawal has exposed the institutional flaws and systemic vulnerabilities that have long impeded Zimbabwe’s pursuit of sustainable development, as the nation’s delicate development ecosystem teeters on the verge of collapse.
The expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage in Zimbabwe has been made possible in large part by USAID’s flagship program, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
By 2023, about 1.2 million people which is more than 90% of the nation’s ART-eligible population had received ART support from PEPFAR.
Withdrawing USAID funding would probably cause ART coverage to drop sharply, endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans living with HIV/AIDS.
According to USAID’s Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) program, Zimbabwe’s HIV prevalence rate has declined from 14.3% in 2010 to 12.9% in 2020. However, this progress is fragile and reversible. 
The HIV/AIDS Program Index (HAPI), a composite measure of HIV/AIDS program performance, would likely decline precipitously in the absence of USAID funding.
This, in turn, would exacerbate the HIV/AIDS epidemic, undermining Zimbabwe’s progress towards achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.
In regards to maternal and child health, maternal mortality rates decreased from roughly 614 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2010 to about 462 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2024 as a result of USAID’s efforts.
Thanks to USAID’s assistance with vaccine campaigns, the immunization coverage for children under one-year-old rose from over 80% in 2013 to over 90% by 2023.
Zimbabwe’s food security situation would be significantly impacted if USAID aid were to be discontinued.
In Zimbabwe, increasing agricultural productivity, expanding market access, and improving nutrition outcomes have all been made possible by USAID’s Feed the Future (FtF) program.
More than 1.5 million metric tons of maize have been produced thanks to FtF as of 2022, surpassing the nation’s production goals.
However, Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector would probably see a sharp drop in production without USAID financing, endangering the nation’s food security position.
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) would likely deteriorate in the absence of USAID funding. Zimbabwe’s GHI score has improved from 19.1 in 2010 to 15.3 in 2020, indicating a moderate level of hunger.
However, a withdrawal of USAID funding would likely reverse this progress, exacerbating hunger and malnutrition in Zimbabwe and likely affecting the Human Development Index (HDI) which had improved from 0.51 in 2010 to 0.57 in 2020, indicating a moderate level of human development.
Can the Government manage without USAID? With a sizable amount of the budget going towards debt servicing and ongoing expenses, Zimbabwe’s budgetary space is severely limited.
The nation’s capacity to raise domestic funds to cover USAID’s funding shortfall would be hampered by its budget deficit.
Inadequate technical know-how, ineffective mechanisms, and a lack of human resources define Zimbabwe’s institutional capacity to oversee and carry out development initiatives.
Ineffectiveness, corruption, and a lack of transparency afflict the nation’s public financial management (PFM) systems, which are essential for efficient resource allocation and use.
Moreover, Zimbabwe’s development frameworks and policies, such as the Zimbabwe National Development Strategy (NDS1), lack clear prioritization, coordination, and resource allocation mechanisms.
Achieving sustainable development results depends on Zimbabwe’s capacity to move from a donor-dependent to a self-sustaining development model, according to USAID’s Development Assistance Framework (DAF).
Failure to solve the aforementioned issues, however, will make it more difficult for the nation to fill the financing shortfall that USAID might leave in 2025, endangering development achievements and threatening the nation’s chances for sustainable development.

The USA is thinking of stopping giving money to Zimbabwe. This will affect the country's progress in helping people with HIV, keeping kids healthy, and growing enough food. The USA helps Zimbabwe with medicine, vaccines, and farming. Without the USA's help, many people will suffer. Zimbabwe needs to find ways to get money on its own. If they cannot, they might go back to struggling like before. It's important for Zimbabwe to learn how to take care of itself without always needing help from other countries.

Beyond The Edge of Oblivion: The Threat Of USAID's Withdrawal

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released the weekly disease surveillance report for the week ending January 19, 2025.
According to the Ministry, a total of 6,958 cases of common diarrhoea were reported, resulting in 6 deaths. The fatalities occurred in various regions: 2 at Sally Mugabe Hospital in Harare, 1 in Bikita District (Masvingo), 1 in Mutoko District (Mashonaland East), 1 in Mazowe District (Mashonaland Central), and 1 in Kwekwe District (Midlands). Among the reported cases, 3,040 were in children under the age of 5. The provinces with the highest case numbers were Manicaland (1,029) and Mashonaland West (988). Cumulatively, there have been 19,441 cases and 12 deaths related to common diarrhoea.
In the case of malaria, 1,048 new cases and 5 deaths were reported. The fatalities were spread across Mutare District (Manicaland), Sanyati District (Mashonaland West), Chiredzi District (Masvingo), and two hospitals in Harare—Sally Mugabe Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital. Of the malaria cases, 12.5% (131 cases) were in children under five years old. The highest numbers were reported in Manicaland (665 cases) and Mashonaland West (133 cases). Cumulative figures for malaria stand at 2,186 cases and 9 deaths.
Anthrax cases were reported in Gokwe North District (5 cases), Gokwe South District (1 case), and Sanyati District (1 case). There were no reported deaths, and cumulative figures for anthrax cases are now 19, with no fatalities.
Measles saw 4 new suspected cases, with reports coming from Mashonaland West (1 case), Mashonaland East (1 case), and Harare Metropolitan Province (2 cases). The total number of suspected measles cases is now 12, with no deaths.
There were 471 dysentery cases reported, along with 1 death from Hurungwe District in Mashonaland West. The highest case numbers were recorded in Mashonaland Central (108 cases) and Mashonaland West (82 cases). Cumulative cases for dysentery stand at 1,405, with 1 fatality.
One suspected typhoid case was reported, with no deaths. The cumulative number of suspected typhoid cases is now 2, with no deaths.
A total of 18 mumps cases were reported, with no fatalities. The highest number of cases came from Mashonaland West (6 cases), followed by Mashonaland East (3 cases) and Masvingo (3 cases). Cumulative figures for mumps are 41 cases, with no deaths.
There were no reported cases of Mpox this week, and the cumulative figures remain at zero.
A total of 736 dog bite cases were reported, with no fatalities. Of these, 180 were bitten by vaccinated dogs, 154 by unvaccinated dogs, and 402 by dogs of unknown vaccination status. Masvingo Province recorded the highest number of dog bite cases (124), followed by Manicaland (107). The cumulative total for dog bites is now 2,049, with no deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0%.
In terms of cholera, 13 suspected cases were reported, with no deaths. The suspected cases were from Mazowe District (12 cases) in Mashonaland Central and Kariba District (1 case) in Mashonaland West. The cumulative total for cholera now stands at 85 suspected cases and 1 suspected death.
Finally, influenza cases have risen to 2,535, with no reported deaths. Manicaland recorded the highest number of cases (847), followed by Mashonaland West (704). The cumulative number of suspected influenza cases is now 6,868, with no fatalities.

In the news, the Ministry of Health reported that there were many cases of diarrhoea, malaria, and other diseases in Zimbabwe. Over 6,900 cases of diarrhoea and 1,048 cases of malaria were recorded. Some people died, especially children. Other diseases like anthrax, measles, dysentery, typhoid, mumps, and dog bites were also reported, but no deaths. Cases of influenza also increased. In total, there were many sick people, but not many people died from these diseases. The Ministry is working to stop the diseases from spreading.

Weekly Disease Surveillance: Over 6,900 Diarrhoea Cases And 1,048 Malaria Cases Recorded

The National AIDS Council (NAC) said that Zimbabwe has enough antiretroviral (ARV) drugs for the 1.2 million people on antiretroviral therapy (ART), despite the U.S. freezing aid through USAID.
This freeze is part of broader cuts to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other international funding.
PEPFAR has been the largest funder of Zimbabwe’s HIV response, committing US$210 million for 2024 and US$200 million from October 2024 to September 2025.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/zim-has-enough-arvs-in-stock-nac">The Sunday Mail</a>, NAC CEO Dr. Bernard Madzima reassured people on ART not to panic, saying the country has sufficient ARVs to meet current needs. Said Madzima:

I want to assure the nation and everyone that there are enough ARVs in the country. At this stage, there is no need to panic. Anyone who needs ARVs needs to go to the facility where they collect their ARVs and they will get services.
This current scenario, at this stage, has not affected the service delivery of ARVs. But as a country, we need strategies to deal with the possible scenarios in the future so that we cover that gap, and that gap should not lead to anyone not getting treatment.
And I am sure you read from the Central Government that as a country we stand by prioritising health and making sure that anyone who needs treatment will get the treatment that they need.
</blockquote>
Madzima stressed the importance of continuing to mobilise resources to ensure the success of Zimbabwe’s HIV prevention programs.
He noted that funds from the AIDS levy, a 3% tax on corporate profits and personal income for HIV/AIDS programs, are “limited.” Said Madzima:

The AIDS levy is a very limited resource. Remember that part of it is collected in local currency and it’s difficult to then buy things from outside the country.
So, it will not be able to cater to all the shortfalls that will happen in the health sector…
So, we can only stretch it up to a point. It’s not an infinite resource; it’s very limited.
</blockquote>

Zimbabwe has enough ARVs for the 1.2 million people on ART, even though the U.S. froze aid. PEPFAR was a big funder but is now cutting funds. NAC reassured people that there is no need to panic, as there are enough ARVs in the country. The CEO said they will continue to prioritize health and treatment for those in need. However, the funding from the AIDS levy is limited and may not cover all the needs. They need to keep finding ways to support HIV prevention programs to be successful.

"Zimbabwe Has Enough ARVs In Stock"

The U.S. government has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration must take full responsibility for the health of Zimbabweans, including procuring anti-retroviral therapy and ensuring clinics are properly staffed with nurses.
Reports indicate that since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, the U.S. has provided over US$5 billion in humanitarian and development assistance, including more than $1 billion in the past three years alone.
The United States remains the largest provider of development and humanitarian aid, with key initiatives like the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), and the Feed the Future Hunger and Food Security Program.
However, the Trump administration recently suspended donor support globally. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is now working to strengthen its health, development, and cultural exchange programs.
In a statement released Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe confirmed that, in line with President Trump’s Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning U.S. Foreign Aid, Secretary Rubio has paused all U.S. foreign assistance funded by or through the State Department and USAID for review. Reads the statement:

Consistent with President Trump’s Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid, Secretary Rubio has paused all U.S. foreign assistance funded by or through the State Department and USAID for review.
He is initiating a review of all foreign assistance programs to ensure they are efficient and consistent with U.S. foreign policy under the America First agenda.
At this moment, in order to do a thorough review, all programs and grants without a waiver approved by the Secretary of State using foreign assistance funding are paused.
It is time for Zimbabwe to take seriously its responsibility for the health of its people. For HIV, Zimbabwe has hit the 95/95/95 targets.
They urgently need to be focused on buying ART and getting nurses in clinics. They can do this.

The U.S. government is telling Zimbabwe's leaders they need to take care of the people's health. The U.S. has given Zimbabwe a lot of money for health and other needs. They help with things like AIDS relief and food security. But now, the U.S. is stopping some of this support to review how it's being used. Zimbabwe needs to buy medicine and have enough nurses in clinics. They have made progress in fighting HIV, but there is still work to do. It's up to Zimbabwe to make sure their people stay healthy.

The Health Of Your People Is Your Responsibility, U.S. Tells Zimbabwe's Government

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over the U.S. government’s decision to immediately pause funding for HIV programs in low- and middle-income countries.
In a statement, WHO said these programs provide life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide.
The funding pause, according to WHO, could significantly increase the risk of illness and death for those living with HIV and undermine efforts to prevent transmission within communities and countries.
WHO also warned that if the funding pause is prolonged, it could lead to a rise in new infections and deaths, potentially reversing decades of progress.  The statement reads:

The World Health Organization (WHO) expresses deep concern about the implications of the immediate funding pause for HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries.
These programmes provide access to life-saving HIV therapy to more than 30 million people worldwide. Globally, 39.9 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2023.
A funding halt for HIV programmes can put people living with HIV at immediate increased risk of illness and death and undermine efforts to prevent transmission in communities and countries.
Such measures, if prolonged, could lead to rises in new infections and deaths, reversing decades of progress and potentially taking the world back to the 1980s and 1990s when millions died of HIV every year globally, including many in the United States of America.
For the global community, this could result in significant setbacks to progress in partnerships and investments in scientific advances that have been the cornerstone of good public health programming, including innovative diagnostics, affordable medicines, and community delivery models of HIV care.
We call on the United States Government to enable additional exemptions to ensure the delivery of lifesaving HIV treatment and care.
<h2>PEPFAR’s legacy and current risks</h2>
The United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been a flagship initiative of the global HIV response since its establishment over 20 years ago.
The current funding pause for PEPFAR will have a direct impact on millions of lives that depend on the predictable supply of safe and effective antiretroviral treatment.
PEPFAR works in over 50 countries around the world. Over the past two decades, PEPFAR funding has saved more than 26 million lives.
Currently, PEPFAR is providing HIV treatment for more than 20 million people living with HIV globally, including 566,000 children under 15 years of age.
Over the past year, PEPFAR and partners, including WHO, have been working on sustainability plans with countries for greater country ownership and reduced donor support up to and beyond 2030.
A sudden and prolonged stop to programmes does not allow for a managed transition and puts the lives of millions at risk.
WHO is committed to support PEPFAR and other partners, as well as national governments, in managing change processes effectively to minimize the impact on people living with HIV.

The recall mainly affects Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, with five product lines shipped to Britain that have already been sold. The affected brands include Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid.
Chlorate can form when chlorine-based disinfectants are used in water treatment and food processing. A company spokesperson said that independent experts have determined the risk to consumers is very low.
Coca-Cola has not received any complaints in Great Britain and has informed authorities, promising to cooperate fully.
The issue involves a small number of imported cans of Appletiser, Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero, identifiable by production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE found on the bottom of the cans.
Exposure to high levels of chlorate can lead to health issues, particularly for children and infants.
According to an unnamed company spokesperson quoted by the AFP news agency, the higher levels of chlorate were discovered during routine testing at the company’s production facility in Ghent, Belgium.
Most unsold products have already been removed from shelves, according to AFP, and the company is working to withdraw the remaining stock.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released the weekly disease report for the week ending on 12 January 2024.
The report highlights a total of 639 malaria cases and one death in Guruve. Notably, 10.3% of these cases involved children under five years old. The provinces with the highest number of cases were Manicaland with 354 and Mashonaland Central with 117. The cumulative figures now stand at 1,138 cases and four deaths.
This week, one suspected typhoid case was reported, with no deaths. The cumulative figures for typhoid are one suspected case, no deaths, and a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0%.
A total of 26 suspected cholera cases and one suspected death were reported this week. The suspected death occurred in Harare Province’s southern districts. Out of the suspected cases, 25 were from Mazowe District, and one was from Harare’s Southern District.
The cumulative figures for cholera are 72 suspected cases, one suspected death, and no confirmed deaths, with a cumulative CFR of 1.4%. All provinces and cities are expected to strengthen their Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) on surveillance, infection prevention and control (IPC), and case management.
This week also saw 188 dysentery cases with no deaths reported. The provinces with the highest number of clinical dysentery cases were Mashonaland Central with 96 and Mashonaland West with 92. The cumulative figures for dysentery are 934 cases and no deaths.
New anthrax cases were recorded, with three cases in Gokwe North District, two in Sanyati District, and two in Mwenezi District, bringing the cumulative figures to 12 cases and no deaths.
Furthermore, there were 6,506 common diarrhoea cases reported this week, resulting in seven deaths. The deaths were reported from Sally Mugabe Hospital (6) and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (1) in Harare Metropolitan Province.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the US withdrawal after his second-term inauguration on Monday.
During an online briefing from Davos, where he was attending the World Economic Forum, Ncube said the withdrawal could signal cuts in health aid to countries like Zimbabwe. He said:

PEPFAR contributes nearly US$90 million annually to support salaries and incentives for healthcare workers, as well as funding HIV and viral load testing, prevention, cervical cancer screening, and tuberculosis treatment.
Zimbabwe is struggling to fund its public health system. The government introduced a sugar tax on beverages last year to raise funds for cancer treatment. This year, they introduced another tax on fast food. Said Ncube:

A woman who had given birth to a baby boy was shocked when a nurse handed her a baby girl.
Health and Child Care Ministry permanent secretary, Aspect Maunganidze (pictured above), told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/very-unfortunate-government-speaks-on-ubh-baby-swap/">Chronicle</a> on Monday that the Government is aware of the incident and described it as “very unfortunate.” Said Maunganidze:

The ministry is aware of the unfortunate incident of ‘baby swapping’ that occurred at United Bulawayo Hospitals and awaits the results of the investigation that we instructed the hospital to undertake.
While we expect the investigation to be concluded expeditiously, we acknowledge the sensitivities around the matter.
Parallel to the investigative process, we have instructed the institution to assist with counselling all affected parties (including the staff), reorient or refresh our staff on the standard operating procedures during and after delivery, and reinforce the importance of good moral and ethical practice.

The mother of the boy had to resort to DNA testing at a private lab in the city centre and the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) to prove that the baby girl given to her by the nurse was not hers.
The nurse on duty had told her that she had given birth to a girl and, due to her Caesarean section, she might have been under sedation.
Zephania Dlamini, head of the Applied Genetics Testing Centre at NUST, confirmed that DNA tests conducted on the parents and babies unequivocally showed that the two babies had been exchanged. Said Dlamini:

Jha predicted that China will step up for the organization in the absence of U.S. funding and leadership, which could give China more political influence globally.

Trump’s executive action calls on the secretary of state and the director of the Office of Management and Budget to “pause the future transfer of any United States Government funds, support, or resources” for the WHO.
However, it takes a year to fully withdraw from the body, and the U.S. should continue funding it for that period.

Trump Orders U.S. To Withdraw From The World Health Organisation

A woman who recently gave birth to a boy via Caesarean section at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) was shocked to be discharged with a baby girl.
As reported by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/baby-swap-at-bulawayo-hospital/">Chronicle</a>, the mother, who cannot be named due to ethical concerns, found out that the parents of the baby girl had already travelled to Esigodini in Matabeleland South with her son.
A month later, the woman had to pay US$220 for DNA tests at a Bulawayo lab to prove the child given to her by a maternity nurse was not her biological offspring.
A woman from Cowdray Park, close to the mother, said that a scan the day before the birth confirmed she was expecting a boy. She said:

After the delivery, a nurse took the child for cleaning and returned it to the mother.
The mother, who had been taking photographs of her son, noticed the baby’s identification tag indicated it was a girl.

When the new mother noticed the discrepancy, she immediately alerted the nurse. However, the nurse dismissed her concerns, suggesting that the anaesthesia from the Caesarean section might have clouded her judgment.
According to the source, another expectant mother had been admitted to the ward just fifteen minutes before the operation but had already been discharged by the time the alert mother raised the alarm.
The mother informed her relatives about the situation. Her uncle suggested DNA testing, but the nurse opposed the idea, claiming it was too expensive.
Despite the nurse’s objections, the uncle insisted, and they proceeded with DNA testing at a lab in Bulawayo. The results confirmed that the baby girl was not her biological child.
Angry, the family returned to the hospital, demanding answers and the return of their son. Hospital staff located the other mother, who lived in Esigodini, Umzingwane District, and a hospital vehicle was sent to retrieve her.
The woman’s husband initially insisted that the child was theirs. The police were then involved, and the couple was brought to Bulawayo.
The hospital engaged the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) for DNA testing, which confirmed that the two babies had been exchanged.

Dlamini revealed that the entire hospital administration was present during the testing process. UBH chief medical officer William Busumani declined to comment on the incident.
Maphios Siamuchembu, Provincial Medical Director for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, said he was unaware of any baby-swapping reports from UBH.
Renowned medical expert Solwayo Ngwenya called baby-swapping errors tragic but preventable with proper diligence.
Cultural expert Richard Ndebele said that baby swapping was rare in the past due to traditional village midwives.
He warned that those involved must be ready to face consequences, as misfortune could affect both the child and themselves.
Ndebele added that the child might struggle throughout life, and the perpetrators could incur the wrath of their ancestors.
Margaret Makumbe, a retired nurse with over 40 years of experience delivering more than 10,000 babies, said:

In my entire career, I never experienced that wherever I was deployed, neither did I hear of it anywhere else and I think this was because we did what we did out of love.
I just wonder how such a mistake can happen because once a baby is delivered the mother is shown the child before it’s taken away for cleaning with a name tag already strapped on the wrist.

DNA Test Reveals Baby Swap At United Bulawayo Hospitals

An official from the Ministry of Health and Childcare said the government has started procuring cancer treatment machines.
In the 2024 national budget, Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube proposed a tax on sugary beverages. He said that the revenue would fund cancer treatments.
The initial tax was set at US$0.02 per gramme of sugar. After complaints from manufacturers, it was revised to US$0.002. Starting January 1, 2025, the tax was reduced to US$0.0005.

The doctors based their request on section 7 of the Freedom of Information Act [Chapter 10:33].
In December 2024, Finance Secretary George Guvamatanga reported that the government collected US$30.8 million from the sugar surtax. This revenue was generated since the gazetting of Statutory Instrument 16 of 2024 in February.

To address the water shortages in the area, the National AIDS Council (NAC) has pledged to drill two boreholes in Glendale and install two 5,000-litre tanks at Mazowe Flowers Compound.

Zimbabwe On High Alert For Human Metapneumovirus Cases

There has been one death and 60 cases of cholera reported at two locations in Mazowe: the Mazowe Flowers Farm compound and the Glendale Highway suburb.
At the Mazowe Flowers Farm compound, the water supply comes from a single borehole with no storage tank, and at the Glendale Highway suburb, sewage overflow has contaminated shallow wells.
To address this health crisis, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has set up oral rehydration centres at both locations and is running door-to-door health and hygiene awareness campaigns. They are also monitoring public gatherings and food vendors.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/60-cases-of-cholera-reported-in-mazowe/">The Herald</a>, Takura Mzorodzi, the provincial health promotion officer, urged local authorities to provide safe water to communities.
The cholera outbreak started on December 21, 2024, at the Mazowe Flowers Farm compound, which relies on a single borehole and has limited sanitation facilities.
The water supply from the borehole was disrupted due to power issues. Similarly, the Glendale Highway suburb experienced a week without running water. Said Mzorodzi:

This area also has burst sewer pipes, and many residents have shallow wells at their homes. The sewage overflow contaminated the water sources during the rains.
Gatherings, including funerals, will be monitored by health personnel to ensure access to water and sanitation and to regulate attendance numbers.

He urged community members to practice good hygiene, particularly washing hands with running water after using the toilet. Said Mzorodzi:

Individuals will be screened at oral rehydration centres and will receive hydration and proper education on cholera, especially during the rainy season.
We are also targeting food-selling points, including those selling roasted cobs, to establish handwashing facilities.

The government has announced that the ban on fishing activities at Lake Chivero will remain in effect until the Ministry of Health and Child Care completes thorough investigations.
This decision follows the death of wildlife and fish around the lake, which is suspected to be linked to raw effluent being discharged into the water daily by the City of Harare.
During a media briefing at the Munhumutapa Building in Harare on Thursday, Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife Sithembiso Nyoni described the situation at Lake Chivero as critical.
She said that there is a need for a comprehensive approach to address pollution and ecological disturbances in the water body. Said Nyoni:

Going forward, we will rope in the Ministry of Health to do the finding because we want to save lives. The ban cannot be lifted now and a whole of government and stakeholders’ approach is required to reverse the situation at Chivero.

Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Jenfan Muswere said:

We know that the councillors who are running Harare have failed, we hope that the Commission of Inquiry will determine if the councillors elected to run the authority can be replaced owing to their failures.

Lake Chivero, located approximately 40 km southwest of Harare, is facing severe pollution, siltation, and ecological disturbances.

Government Extends Fishing Ban At Lake Chivero

Mpilo Central Hospital has established a dedicated Mental Health Clinic in response to the escalating drug and substance abuse crisis in Zimbabwe.
Sister Hango Ndebele, head of the new Mental Health Clinic at Mpilo Hospital, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/mpilo-hospital-opens-unit-to-tackle-drug-abuse-epidemic/">State media</a> that, unlike other services within the hospital, the clinic specializes solely in mental health concerns. She said:

This unit is different from other units in the hospital in the sense that it provides comprehensive mental health services. We treat the client using a holistic approach.
We don’t simply focus on the mental illness but attend to the physical side as well. We advocate for their treatment and involve family members in their care.
We screen for HIV, TB, hepatitis, kidney function, and liver function tests, and we work with you to reduce your intake until you can resolve to stop.
</blockquote>
Ndebele said that some clients voluntarily seek treatment at the clinic, while others are brought in by family members or emergency services in a state of intoxication or unconsciousness.
She also revealed that patients range from as young as 10 years old to those above retirement age. Said Ndebele:

In relation to substance use disorders, they start as early as the age group of 10 to 17 years, but the most dominant group is those who are 35 to 45 years old, the working group. We do get those above 65 years, but not on a large scale.
The clinic has helped ease congestion at Ingutsheni Central Hospital as clients can get their medication at the hospital.
The unit is currently manned by four mental health nurses trained by the World Health Organisation and by Gap and Friendship Bench in problem-solving therapy. We also offer counselling services at the clinic.
We have psychologists who assist us on a voluntary basis as well. We also go out to schools to screen for depression, anxiety, and substance use and also offer counselling.
</blockquote>
The clinic also provides support for people struggling with depression and anxiety, as well as those contemplating suicide. Said Ndebele:

We handle para-suicide patients almost daily and offer counselling and other psychotherapies. We involve the family as they are affected as well. We also screen for depression and anxiety.
For para-suicide, it’s mainly women, and with women, it’s a cry for attention, unlike men who use lethal forms and don’t stop halfway. But we do have some of them as well.

Every quarter, the clinic holds awareness campaigns and mental health drives in the community. They have reached areas such as Ngozi Mine, Cowdray Park, Nkulumane, Emganwini, Nketa, and Mabuthweni.

Mpilo Central Hospital Opens Dedicated Mental Health Clinic

The Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) said teenage pregnancies are prevalent in mining communities. The ZGC also raised concerns about the poor condition of maternity waiting shelters in rural areas.
In a study assessing the experiences of pregnant women in six rural provinces, including Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South, the ZGC found that 211 expectant mothers under the age of 18 were recorded at 13 health facilities over a year. Reads the report:

The Commission also noted relatively high statistics of girls below the age of 18 being admitted at the maternity waiting homes.
A total of 211 expecting mothers below 18 years were recorded in the period of 12 months at 13 health institutions visited, with health institutions in mining communities recording higher cases of teenage pregnancies.

The report revealed that maternity waiting shelters, created by the government to help pregnant women reach healthcare facilities more easily, are in bad condition and lack proper security. Reads the report:

A total of 24 health institutions were assessed across six provinces; Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Manicaland, Matabeleland North, and Matabeleland South.
Issues noted included dilapidated infrastructure, poor living conditions, lack of nutritional support, shortage of skilled personnel, and high-security concerns around the maternity waiting homes.

The ZGC recommended improving waiting shelters and adding support services for survivors of gender-based violence, including counselling.
Health Deputy Minister Sleiman Timios Kwidini said the government is upgrading maternity waiting shelters and building new clinics in rural areas with devolution funds. Said Kwidini:

The waiting shelters for expecting mothers are temporary shelters and as a ministry, we are working towards standardising some of them to make it comfortable for women as they come to deliver.
They were designed to ensure that women do not travel long distances when coming to deliver. They aim to reduce home deliveries which can come with complications that put women’s health at risk.

Itai Rusike, the executive director of the Community Health Working Group, told <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/alarming-teenage-pregnancy-rates-in-mining-communities/">Chronicle</a> that although there has been some improvement in maternal health, the government needs to support clinics in urban areas. He said:

When facilities lack waiting mothers’ shelters, pregnant women may be discouraged from seeking care due to the costs of staying at the facility or the absence of proper accommodation.
Delays in seeking help are a major issue, which is why maternal and child health activities, community engagement, and health education must be strengthened…
The Government should provide health grants to urban local authorities to enable them to fully implement the free user fee policy for pregnant women.
This would prevent the collapse of urban clinics, which currently rely on user fees for operational costs.

Teenage Pregnancies Rampant In Mining Communities, Says Gender Commission

Zimbabwe’s drug rehabilitation centres are facing a severe shortage of medication and necessities, putting patients and staff at risk.
A recent report by the Thematic Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, led by Chief Sansali, highlighted these issues and was tabled before the Senate.
Chief Sansali revealed that Matabeleland North and South provinces lack dedicated drug rehabilitation centres.
Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital, one of Zimbabwe’s largest mental health institutions located about 52 km from Masvingo, is experiencing an acute shortage of medication. Said Chief Sansali (<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036405/drug-rehabs-hit-by-medication-shortage">via NewsDay</a>):
<blockquote>
The committee observed that Matabeleland North and South provinces do not have drug and rehabilitation centres.
The quality of care and treatment is compromised due to a shortage of psychotherapeutic drugs. For instance, at the general section of Ngomahuru Hospital, the institution is not providing medication to patients leading to a situation where that section of the hospital functions more as a detention centre for individuals who struggle to co-exist with others in society.
Unfortunately, after 4 to 8 weeks of inadequate treatment, these individuals are released back into the community.
Moreover, the shortage of medication puts workers at risk, as some patients may become violent and without the necessary drugs, staff is unable to manage these situations effectively.
</blockquote>
Ingutsheni Hospital, the largest psychiatric hospital in Zimbabwe, located in Belmont, Bulawayo, is also facing a critical shortage of drugs. Said Chief Sansali:
<blockquote>
Despite Ingutsheni Hospital receiving medicines from Egypt, it still faces shortages of critical medications like Chlorpromazine and Diazepam as well as essential anti-craving and aversive drugs necessary for effective rehabilitation.
The committee observed that some of the institutions earmarked for conversion into rehabilitation centres such as St Luke’s and Mzilikazi male circumcision centres have not yet received any communication in that regard.
There is a general shortage of trained professionals, including counsellors, psychiatrists and social workers with expertise in addiction treatment, which limits the quality and scope of services provided.
</blockquote>
Staffing levels at mental health facilities were insufficient, with the ideal ratio of one nurse per four patients not being met. Said Chief Sansali:
<blockquote>
For example, Gwanda Provincial Hospital is struggling with a deficit of mental health personnel, currently employing only 33 out of the recommended 70 workers.
Additionally, institutions like Chipadze lack social workers, an essential role in the recovery process for patients.
Uniforms for patients, especially in psychiatric sections are often unavailable or in poor condition, with many being torn.
There is a persistent shortage of bedding and laundry facilities often malfunction leading to the deterioration of linen.
There is a severe shortage of beds, forcing some patients to sleep on the floor or in makeshift arrangements.
</blockquote>
The report also said Ngomahuru receives only 30% of its proposed budget as it is viewed as a district hospital, which is insufficient to cover even two months of operations.

Ngomahuru Hospital doesn't get enough money to operate. Overall, the rehab centers in Zimbabwe are struggling with shortages and it's affecting the patients and staff.

Zimbabwe's Drug Rehab Centres Struggle With Medication Shortages

Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo is the hospital with the highest patient mortality rate in Zimbabwe, patient admission records from January to August 2024 have shown.
According to statistics on general patient outcomes at central hospitals, <a href="https://cite.org.zw/mpilo-hospital-leads-in-patient-death-statistics/">obtained by CITE</a>, Mpilo Hospital recorded the highest mortality rate in the country’s referral hospitals at 8.4%, followed closely by Parirenyatwa Hospital at 8%.
From January to August 2024, Mpilo Hospital had a total of 18 367 admissions and 17 316 discharges.
Parirenyatwa in Harare had 19 437 total admissions and 18 586 number of discharges.
The higher death percentages at Mpilo and Parirenyatwa hospitals could indicate more critically ill patients or challenges in resource allocation and care.
Sally Mugabe Hospital, despite handling the largest admissions at 39 395 and 36 757 discharges, reported a 7.4 per cent death rate, which remains low compared to Mpilo and Parirenyatwa.
United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) recorded a five per cent death rate from 16 230 admissions and 15 389 discharges.
Despite the patient mortality rate, the hospitals showed most admitted patients were discharged successfully, with discharges close to admission numbers.
Chitungwiza Hospital stands out with a very high discharge rate, recording the lowest death percentage at four per cent as the total number of discharges 15,817 is almost equal to admissions 15 865.
These statistics were shared in a Ministry of Health and Child Care end-of-year review and planning meeting which was held in Bulawayo from December 9 to 13, 2024.
CITE reported hospital sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, as saying dwindling resources and poor management are contributing to Mpilo’s crisis.
Bulawayo Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Dr Maphios Siamuchembu, referred inquiries regarding Mpilo’s performance to the hospital’s administration. He said:

Information on Mpilo Hospital can be obtained from the Mpilo Central Hospital run by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Dzvanga. If you look for Dr Dzvanga you can ask him all the questions.
</blockquote>
However, contacted for contact, the CMO – Dr Dzvanga, who was on leave, directed questions to the acting CMO, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya.
Prof Ngwenya, also Mpilo’s Clinical Director, acknowledged “the figures are terrible” but assured that “ the hospital is taking measures to restore the hospital to its previous better standing.”
In an interview with CITE, Dr Themba Bulle, a general practitioner based in Australia, said Mpilo and Parirenyatwa hospitals may need further investigation into why their mortality rates are relatively higher. Said Dr Bulle:

The rich have access to medical aid and can afford private health which is quite expensive while the poor do not.
The rich and high ranking government officials can afford to travel to foreign lands to seek medical attention.
They travel to the US, UK, India, Singapore, Malaysia, China, South Africa and many such countries for their treatment while ordinary citizens die in squalor at Mpilo and Parirenyatwa Hospitals which are notorious for shortages of medicines as well as shortages of healthcare staff.
</blockquote>
Dr Bulle added that “many ordinary citizens actually never make it to these hospitals, dying instead in their homes because of lack of money and lack of ambulances.”
He said under the principles of universality, Zimbabweans should demand a public health system that is free and paid for by the state.

Mpilo Central Hospital Faces Highest Mortality Rate In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwean cancer patients are increasingly turning to self-styled herbal clinics for treatment, as the country’s largest public hospital, Parirenyatwa, is the only facility with a functioning radiotherapy cancer treatment machine available to the general public.
With nearly 17 million people relying on this single resource, access to care remains a significant challenge.
Compounding this issue, Parirenyatwa has not had a functioning mammogram machine for 15 years. A mammogram is an X-ray imaging technique used to screen for breast cancer and other abnormalities in breast tissue, making its absence a critical gap in cancer care.
In an interview with AFP, Agnes Kativhu, 67, shared her experience of being unable to receive treatment for breast cancer after spending a month at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Frustrated by the lack of options, she ultimately sought care at a herbal clinic. She said:

I was a moving grave but am now well. I never want to go back to the hospital because it broke my heart that they failed to give me a single tablet.
</blockquote>
Although many herbalists are unaccredited, unregulated, and lack proven results, they are increasingly sought after by Zimbabweans who feel let down by a failing public health system.
Nothando Mutizira, head of oncology at Parirenyatwa, told AFP that the single radiotherapy cancer treatment machine available is inadequate to meet the growing demand for cancer care. She said:

However, we are managing to provide radiotherapy services with this single unit.
</blockquote>
Simbarashe James Tafirenyika, president of the Zimbabwe Municipalities Nurses and Allied Workers Union, said that hospitals are struggling with a severe shortage of medicines and essential supplies, such as gloves and syringes.
He pointed out that even when hospitals do have equipment, regular power outages often render these machines inoperable.
Tafirenyika also noted that public hospitals are losing staff to the expanding private sector and countries like Britain, as well as neighbouring nations such as South Africa, Zambia, and Mozambique.
Lovemore Makurirofa from the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe told AFP that there is a troubling reliance on the perceived benefits of herbal remedies, alongside a growing mistrust of hospital treatments. He said:

Many people fear both the disease and its treatments, avoiding chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.
When you ask patients why it has taken them that long to come and seek medical attention, usually they will tell you that they’ve been using herbal medicines for quite a long time.
When patients eventually come, they come either with stage three or stage four cancer which is more difficult to treat, more expensive to treat and also the outcomes are much poorer.

Never Chirimo, 66, is the herbalist who runs the Harare centre where Kativhu sought help for her breast cancer. Confident in his abilities, Chirimo claims he can treat any type of cancer.
Another of his patients, 58-year-old Wilfred Manatsa, shared his experience of spending $25,000 on treatment for prostate cancer and Kaposi sarcoma at a private hospital.
Faced with an additional $7,000 cost for surgery that he could not afford, Manatsa decided to put his faith in herbal remedies.
He has since set aside his prescribed medications and now relies solely on herbs for his treatment.

Zimbabwe doesn't have enough machines to treat cancer in public hospitals, so many people are turning to herbalists for help. The main hospital only has one radiotherapy machine and no mammogram machine, making it hard for people to get proper care. Some people feel let down by the hospitals and think herbal remedies might be better. But doctors warn that herbal treatments might not be as effective as hospital treatments and could lead to worse outcomes. Due to shortages of medicines and equipment, some people are seeking alternative treatments, like herbs, even though they may not be proven to work.

Zimbabwe’s Cancer Patients Turn To Herbalists Over Ailing Health System

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has released its latest Weekly Disease Surveillance Report for the week ending December 1, 2024, revealing 19 new anthrax cases with no reported deaths.
The cases were distributed as follows: Gokwe South District (6), Gokwe North District (8) in Midlands Province, Sanyati District (3) in Mashonaland West Province, and Bikita District (2) in Masvingo Province. The cumulative total for anthrax cases now stands at 487, with zero deaths.
The Ministry also reported 428 malaria cases and two fatalities during the same week. The deaths occurred in Mutare District (1) in Manicaland Province and Binga District (1) in Matabeleland North Province. Among the reported malaria cases, 75 (17.5%) were found in children under five years of age.
The provinces with the highest malaria case counts were Manicaland (168) and Mashonaland Central (105), bringing the cumulative figures for malaria to 39,465 cases and 88 deaths.
The report also indicated three suspected cases of typhoid, with no deaths reported. These suspected cases were recorded in Northern District (1) and Sally Mugabe Central Hospital (2) in Harare Province, resulting in a cumulative total of 265 suspected typhoid cases and zero deaths.
Lastly, the report highlighted 7,153 cases of common diarrhoea, which resulted in seven deaths. The fatalities were reported from various locations: Sally Mugabe Central Hospital (2), Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (1), and Ruwa Local Board (1) in Harare Metropolitan Province, as well as UBH (2) in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and Kwekwe District (1) in Midlands Province.
Notably, 59% of the diarrhoea cases involved children under five years old, with the highest numbers reported in Mashonaland East (1,099) and Mashonaland West (1,414). The cumulative figures for common diarrhoea now stand at 335,191 cases and 171 deaths.

There are 3 suspected typhoid cases but no deaths. For common diarrhea, 7,153 cases were recorded, with 171 deaths. Children under five are most affected by these diseases. Overall, the situation highlights the importance of healthcare and disease prevention in the country.

Anthrax Spreads In Midlands

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has reportedly performed 41 successful heart surgeries in 2024, the highest number of such operations conducted in a single year since 2016.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/record-heart-surgeries-at-parirenyatwa">The Sunday Mail</a>, Terence Mautsi, the public relations officer for the hospital group, said that they aim to increase this number to between 100 and 150 in 2025. Said Mautsi:
<blockquote>
Open-heart surgery has progressed this year. We have performed 41 surgeries in total. This is important, being the highest number performed per year in comparison to other years since 2016 and we are planning to double the number next year, resources permitting.
The aim is for the unit to become a fully fledged one, which is able to fulfil national obligations, including teaching specialists, and this can only be possible by increasing the number of procedures done at the hospital.
The hospital is aiming at having a 10-bed cardiothoracic ICU (intensive care unit) and HDU (high dependency unit); this will allow smooth functioning and we are engaged with at least three cardiothoracic units to train percussionists.
</blockquote>
Mautsi said they were unable to meet their target due to occasional shortages of essential consumables. He said:
<blockquote>
The ideal number of patients to keep a single cardiothoracic surgeon competent, of 150 per year, has not been reached.
There are many factors which contributed to us not reaching the target. There are times when we ran out of consumables and it took a long to procure due to the process involved. We had instances where the resources were available but patients failed to turn up due to fear.
The patients need to be admitted into ICU after the procedure; unfortunately, we have one general ICU for the whole hospital.
We should have an independent ICU for cardiothoracic surgery; this will allow us to function more effectively.
</blockquote>
Mautsi said that there are currently 200 patients on the Parirenyatwa waiting list, with the waiting period being six for those who agree to undergo surgery.
In addition to the 41 successful heart surgeries, two patients unfortunately lost their lives due to postoperative complications. He said:
<blockquote>
One patient developed an infection and succumbed almost two weeks after surgery and the other patient was bleeding postoperatively and unfortunately we were unable to secure the relevant blood products due to shortages.
We aim to do at least 100 to 150 next year. We are engaging with the Ministry of Health and Child Care as our parent ministry, the hospital administration, sister hospitals, local industries and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to reach our target.
Surgical camps allow us to do more patients; the last camp we did 10 patients in a week, so we are planning to do more camps. We are engaged with other units in Africa to get personal training as percussionists.
</blockquote>
Mautsi added that 12 children underwent successful surgeries this year, with 11 of the patients diagnosed with congenital heart disease and one suffering from rheumatic heart disease.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals did 41 heart surgeries in 2024, the most since 2016. They aim for 100-150 in 2025. They want to have more resources and specialists. But they faced shortages of supplies and patients not showing up. Two patients died due to complications. They want their own ICU for heart surgeries. They have 200 patients waiting for surgery. 12 children had successful surgeries this year too. They are working with the government, hospitals, and NGOs to reach their goals. They also plan to do more surgical camps.

The Zimbabwean government says it has raised US$30.8 million from a special surtax on sugar content in beverages since its introduction earlier this year.
This surtax is intended to fund the procurement of cancer treatment equipment.
George Guvamatanga, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, revealed this in a letter to the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) on December 13, 2024.
ZADHR had requested details about the sugar tax collection and its use.
The sugar tax was introduced on February 9, 2024, under the Customs and Excise (Tariff) (Amendment) Notice, 2024.
ZADHR also asked for information on the specific cancer drugs and equipment procured and the hospitals they were distributed to.
Guvamatanga said that procurement of medical supplies falls under the Ministry of Health and Child Care and referred ZADHR to that ministry for further information.
The government introduced the sugar levy to discourage high sugar consumption, which is linked to certain cancers.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube justified the introduction of the sugar tax as a response to growing concerns about the adverse effects of the consumption of sugar.
He said the funds generated from the levy would be ring-fenced for therapy and procurement of cancer equipment.
