The Ministry of Health and Child Care reports that fourteen (14) people have died from snake bites since the start of the year. 
In its disease surveillance report for the week ending September 15, the Ministry announced that a total of 2,917 snake bite cases and 14 deaths have been documented this year. During the current week, there were 31 snake bite cases reported, but no fatalities occurred.
The Ministry also recorded 489 malaria cases and two deaths during the same week. The deaths were reported from Marondera District (1) in Mashonaland East and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital (1) in Harare.
Overall, the cumulative figures for the year stand at 35,055 cases of malaria and 78 deaths.
Of the 489 malaria cases, 59 involved children under five years old, with significant cases reported in Mashonaland Central (244) and Manicaland (85).
In the same week, there were nine deaths attributed to 8,482 cases of common diarrhoea. The fatalities occurred at Mpilo Central Hospital (1) in Bulawayo, Mwenezi District (1) in Masvingo, and Nyanga District (2) in Manicaland.
Among the reported cases, 4,235 involved children under five years of age. The Ministry added:

A female Member of Parliament in Zimbabwe has suggested that men should engage in sexual intercourse more frequently to lower their risk of developing prostate cancer.
She also said that as women age and their desire for intimacy diminishes, they should consider allowing their husbands to take younger wives, arguing that men remain potent long after women are past their prime.

Medical studies suggest that frequent ejaculation may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. However, there isn’t a specific number of times a man should ejaculate each month to maintain optimal prostate health.

<li>Australian researchers published a study in the British Journal of Urology (BJU) in 2003, which found that men who ejaculated more than five times per week in their 20s had a reduced risk of prostate cancer.</li>
<li>A 2008 study in the British Journal of Urology International also found that men with higher ejaculation frequency had a lower risk of prostate cancer.</li>
<li>A 2016 study in the journal European Urology showed that men with higher ejaculation frequency, especially in their 40s, had a lower risk of developing prostate cancer.</li>

Mpilo Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narcisius Dzvanga, has slammed the City of Bulawayo and the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) for failing to exempt the hospital from water and power cuts, respectively.
Dzvanga made the comments after a power outage interrupted a visit by United States Ambassador Pamela Tremont, who was touring the hospital’s HIV laboratory, which is supported by the U.S. government.
Senzeni Ncube, writing for <a href="https://cite.org.zw/power-outage-disrupts-u-s-ambassadors-visit-to-mpilo-hospital/">CITE</a>, reported that due to the power outage, Ambassador Tremont was unable to see the laboratory equipment in operation. Said Dzvanga:

We have several key institutions here, including lines that serve the State House and even water supply, but they can’t separate us from the general grid.

Dzvanga said that Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart indicated it is feasible to dedicate a water supply to Mpilo without interruptions, although ZESA said it would be difficult to guarantee uninterrupted power supply. He said:

At the ministerial and cabinet level, it has been long agreed that all health institutions must be exempt from power cuts, including cases of non-payment for water and electricity.

Dzvanga also revealed that Mpilo Hospital has a solar farm capable of powering the entire facility, but a vital cable for connection is still being sourced from Germany.
He added that once the power cable is installed, the hospital will no longer experience power outages.

Power Outage Disrupts U.S. Ambassador’s Tour of Mpilo Hospital’s HIV Laboratory

United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pamela Tremont has sought to reassure the public regarding concerns over a potential condom crisis in the country, following the announcement that the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) will end its 20 years of funding.
Gertrude Ncube, the HIV Prevention Coordinator at the Ministry of Health and Childcare, recently said that funding for the purchase of “maDeMbare” condoms will cease in 2026, attributing this decision to donor fatigue. Said Ncube:

As we are here gathered as government, civil society and partners, let us know that our condom funding is at stake and PEPFAR has already told us that from 2026, there won’t be any condoms funded by them.
We need as a country to look at how best we mobilise even domestic funding actually to fund condoms.

“Madembare” refers to a type of condom distributed for free, particularly in areas with high sexual activity, to help prevent HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
These condoms are known for their strong, often unpleasant smell, which has led to some users rejecting them.
With PEPFAR accounting for 77% of all condom funding in Zimbabwe, its withdrawal could have a detrimental effect on efforts to combat the spread of STIs in the country.
However, during a recent press event at the US Embassy’s postponed Independence celebrations, Ambassador Tremont assured journalists that discussions are underway with their partners to ensure the continuation of their programmes. US Ambassador Pamela Tremont Responds To Fears Of Condom Crisis In Zimbabwe

The Ministry of Health and Childcare has released its latest Disease Surveillance Report, detailing cases of dog bites, malaria, common diarrhoea, and typhoid recorded during the first week of September 2024.
For the week ending September 8, 2024, there were 553 reported dog bite cases, with no fatalities. Of these, 120 were attributed to vaccinated dogs, 135 to unvaccinated dogs, and 298 to dogs of unknown vaccination status.
The highest number of dog bites came from Masvingo Province, which reported 102 cases, followed by Mashonaland East Province with 80. Cumulatively, there have been 19,044 dog bite cases reported, with no deaths.
In terms of malaria, there were 400 new cases and one death reported during the same week. Among these cases, 67 involved children under five years of age.
The provinces with the highest malaria cases were Mashonaland Central, reporting 168 cases, and Mashonaland East with 90. The cumulative figures for malaria now stand at 34,566 cases and 76 deaths.
The report also highlighted 7,933 cases of common diarrhoea, which resulted in 10 deaths. The fatalities were recorded at various hospitals: two at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and one at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare, along with two each at UBH and Mpilo in Bulawayo, and two in Chiredzi, Masvingo Province.
Notably, 4,235 of the reported diarrhoea cases were among children under five years old. The provinces with the highest incidence of common diarrhoea were Mashonaland West, reporting 1,230 cases, and Manicaland with 1,172. The cumulative total for common diarrhoea cases has reached 249,119, with 127 deaths.
Lastly, the report indicated that there were no suspected cases of typhoid or related deaths this week, keeping the cumulative figure for suspected typhoid cases at 216, with no reported fatalities.

Government Engaging Coal Miners To Tackle Hwange Pollution - Minister Moyo

Victoria Falls, a major tourist destination, is considered to be at high risk for an Mpox outbreak due to its proximity to the border and the significant presence of cross-border truckers.

Tourism Hub Victoria Falls Faces Potential Mpox Threat

Zimbabwean scientists have announced a potential breakthrough in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and melanoma, a type of skin cancer, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zimbabwean-scientists-claim-discovery-of-alzheimers-melanoma-cancer-cure/">ZimLive</a>.
Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily impacts memory, thinking, and behavior, and is the leading cause of dementia.
Professor Simon Mukwembi, the lead scientist on the project, stated that through a computer system, they have named Rutava, researchers identified a chemical compound that specifically targets malignant cancer cells without affecting healthy cells in the body.
This research was conducted in collaboration with the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.
At a news conference in Harare on Thursday, Professor Mukwembi said that the study focused exclusively on treatments for melanoma and Alzheimer’s disease. He said:

The good thing that Rutava does is you can recalibrate it for other diseases. So, for the cancer, we’ve got quite a number of cancers, right?
What we have worked on right now is melanoma skin cancer. But of course, we can extend out to sort out all the other cancers without difficulty because we now have the innovative technology.
… We also developed, using the Rutava, a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
</blockquote>
Professor Mukwembi described Rutava as a “digital technology powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced mathematical formulas.”
He explained that this innovative technology has the potential to significantly reduce the time required to transition from discovery to drug development, shortening the process from several years to just a few months. He added:

I’m pleased to say we used Rutava to discover drugs for the treatment of different diseases. First, there is cancer. We’ve got a compound that can target only cancerous cells in the human body.
Currently, the difficulty is that the available cancer drugs target both the cancerous cells and the healthy normal cells. Rutava only targets the cancerous cells.
About 10 million people died of cancer in 2020 and the same number in 2023. So you can see the market for the cancer drug is huge the world over.
</blockquote>
Prof Mukwembi, who is the chairman of the Harare Institute of Public Health (HIPH), was flanked by the institute’s principal Dr Amos Marume and its registrar Dr Isaac Mutingwende.
He expressed confidence that their technology could potentially cure cancer and Alzheimer’s disease but emphasized the need to conduct clinical trials to validate their findings.
Other scientists involved in the project include Dr Eloise van der Merwe, Professor Farai Nyabadza, Professor Yasien Sayed, Professor Betsie Jonck, Professor Eunice Mphako-Banda, Dr Ronnie Maartens, Moster Zhangazha, Neo Padi, and Thabelo Mulenga.
Dr Marume stated that although their discovery will be patented, their share of future profits may be diluted due to the need for funding to develop the drugs and treatments.

Zimbabwean Scientists Claim Discovery Of Alzheimer’s, Melanoma Cancer Treatment

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will hold a virtual meeting of Ministers of Health on 4 September 2024 to assess the Mpox epidemiological outlook and to develop a coordinated regional response.
In a <a href="https://www.sadc.int/latest-news/sadc-hold-meeting-ministers-health-mpox-epidemiological-outlook">statement</a> issued this Tuesday, 03 September, the SADC Secretariat said that the Ministers will deliberate on the Mpox situation on the African continent and in the SADC region and discuss how to strengthen public health surveillance at the national level and on how cross-border disease surveillance should be coordinated to improve the rate of detection, strengthen prevention and limit the spread of Mpox.
The Ministers are expected to prioritise the development and implementation of multi-sectoral interventions to limit and control the spread of Mpox especially for countries without Mpox outbreaks to facilitate early detection and treatment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have recently declared Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHIEC) and a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) respectively.
Following the outbreak of Mpox, the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Harare, Republic of Zimbabwe on 17 August 2024 extended solidarity and support to Member States affected by Mpox and directed the Secretariat to convene an urgent meeting of the Ministers of Health to assess the impact of Mpox and facilitate coordinated regional response to control the spread of the disease.
The Ministers’ meeting will be preceded by a meeting of Senior Officials for Health who will prepare documents for Ministers to consider and make decisions.

Itai Rusike, Executive Director of the Community Working Group on Health (CWGH), has described the unregulated use of herbal medicine in Zimbabwe as a “ticking time bomb”.
Rusike argued that there was a need for scientific research and evidence to support claims made by herbalists, citing the lack of clinical trials and data. He said (via <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/regulation-urgent-and-herbal-medicine-use-surges-cwgh/">VicFallsLive</a>):

Most of our herbal medicines are locally sourced and readily available, 100% organic and non-toxic. However, the challenge lies in the lack of communication regarding dosage schedules, indications for treatment, and the absence of accreditation or regulation of practitioners and their premises…
At most of our hospitals, up to 70% of clients consult alternative practitioners and providers before, during, and after their visits.
This widespread use necessitates serious evaluation and accurate advice for the population.
Many assertions by herbalists have not been scientifically researched. This challenge needs to be discussed.

Rusike also criticised the advertising of alternative medical services on mainstream media platforms, which he believes perpetuates the problem.

Unregulated Use Of Herbal Medicine A “Ticking Time Bomb,” Says Health Expert

The Health Service Commission (HSC) has initiated a comprehensive job evaluation for all health professionals and workers in the public service.
This exercise aims to assess the qualifications and significance of all positions within the sector, ensuring that employees receive fair and equitable compensation relative to their contributions.
Launched at the end of July, the evaluation is projected to be completed by mid-November this year.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/major-job-evaluation-for-health-professionals/">The Herald</a>, Lovemore Marufu, HSC’s acting general manager for conditions of service and industrial relations, explained that job evaluation is a systematic process designed to assess the relative worth of various roles within an organisation. He said:

By using this approach, organisations ensure that the job grading structure is aligned with duties and responsibilities.
The exercise is fundamental to building a fair and equitable compensation system. Job evaluation is not salary increase, promotion, upgrading or cost of living adjustment.
It’s about building a grading structure, establishing job hierarchy, determining pay relationships and developing policies and systems that speak to job responsibilities.
The methodology being used to evaluate jobs in the public health sector is the Patterson grading system. The system categorises jobs based on the complexity of decision-making.
The level and complexity of decisions are essential in grading of different jobs in an organisation. The jobs are categorised into 6 decision bands (A-F).
In addition, jobs are further differentiated or sub-graded within the decision bands based on the complexity, accuracy or tolerance required in the job, pressure of work, supervision given, knowledge, skills and competencies among other factors required to perform role responsibilities.

HSC spokesperson, Tryfine Dzvukutu, said the benefits of the exercise extended beyond the public health sector, as it had a far-reaching spillover to the nation’s productivity. She said:

Health Service Commission Embarks On Job Evaluation For Workers In Public Service

The City of Harare has reassured residents about the absence of a Mpox outbreak, following negative test results for two suspected cases.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2-suspected-mpox-cases-come-out-negative-in-harare/">ZimLive</a> on Wednesday, Harare City’s Health Director, Dr Prosper Chonzi, confirmed that the suspected cases were identified in the high-density suburb of Kuwadzana. Said Chonzi:

There are just two cases in Harare; we took specimens from these individuals who showed some symptoms to the lab and they came out negative.
Mpox is associated with a fever and these people had no such. We have measles and chicken pox which may seem like Mpox but it’s a different case.
We now do the tests here in Zimbabwe and not in South Africa as was the case, but we are all on high alert.

Dr Aspect Maunganidze, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) also told ZimLive that there are no cases reported in Zimbabwe yet. He said:

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR), the highest level of alarm under the IHR.
The outbreak, which began in September 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has since spread to neighbouring countries including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
Mpox can spread through direct contact with infected animals, humans, or contaminated materials. It can also be transmitted through respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact.
Initial symptoms often include fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, followed by a rash that develops into lesions. The illness typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks.
Preventive measures include avoiding contact with infected animals, practising good hygiene, and vaccination for at-risk populations.
There is no specific treatment for monkeypox, but antiviral medications may be used in severe cases.

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) has asked the government to improve its monitoring and response to the monkeypox (mpox) outbreak.
This request comes after the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
In a statement on August 21, ZADHR urged the Ministry of Health and Child Care to increase public awareness about the virus. It said:

ZADHR encourages citizens to take precautions related to the monkeypox virus based on the most current advice from the Ministry of Health and Child Care and from public health officials.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that can spread from animals to humans and also between people through close contact with an infected person or objects such as bedsheets or clothing.
Common symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, pain when swallowing, pustules on the skin, and lesions around the genitals and anus.
According to a report issued by the Africa CDC on August 16, there have been 18 737 Mpox cases (3101 confirmed and 15 636 suspected) across 12 African countries since the beginning of the year, resulting in 541 deaths.
Despite the outbreak in other parts of the world and Africa specifically, Zimbabwe has not yet experienced any confirmed cases of the viral disease.

Zimbabwean Doctors' Group Calls For Enhanced Mpox Surveillance Amid Global Outbreak

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday declared that the increasing spread of Monkeypox (MPox) in Africa is a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR).
The declaration by WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus came on the advice of an IHR Emergency Committee of independent experts who met earlier in the day to review data presented by experts from WHO and affected countries.
The Committee informed the Director-General that it considers the upsurge of mpox to be a PHEIC, with the potential to spread further across African countries and possibly outside the continent. In declaring the PHEIC, Dr Tedros said:

The emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern DRC, and the reporting of cases in several neighbouring countries are very worrying.
On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.

WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti said:

Mpox, originating in Africa, was neglected there, and later caused a global outbreak in 2022. It is time to act decisively to prevent history from repeating itself.

WHO said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths in Africa this year, which already exceeds last year’s figures.
So far, more than 96 per cent of all cases and deaths are in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared mpox a public health emergency on the continent on Tuesday.

WHO Declares Mpox Outbreak A public Health Emergency Of International Concern

The City of Harare has released the HIV statistics for June 2024, comprehensive HIV testing was conducted among girls and women aged 15 years and older.
In a public notice issued this Thursday, 15 August, the local authority said that a total of 11,456 individuals participated in the testing process and the overall positivity rate for HIV during this period was found to be 4.1%.
Breaking down the statistics by age group, the City of Harare said that among those aged 15 to 24 years, 180 out of 5,409 tested positive, resulting in a positivity rate of 3.3%.
For the age group of 25 to 49 years, 252 out of 5,647 individuals tested positive, leading to a positivity rate of 4.5%.
In the oldest group, those aged 50 years and above, 37 out of 400 tested positive, which corresponds to a positivity rate of 9.25%.
Meanwhile, nationally, the HIV prevalence for the 15-49 years age group is 10.49% and the HIV prevalence for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city is 11.75%.
Prevalence refers to the proportion of old and new HIV infections per population.
Positivity is the proportion of HIV-positive infections of the total number of people tested.

In June 2024, the city of Harare revealed that 4.1% of women and girls tested positive for HIV. Around 11,456 people took the test. Among 15-24 year-olds, 3.3% tested positive. Harare Reports 4.1% HIV Positivity Rate Among Women And Girls

The City of Bulawayo has denied recent media reports claiming that 90% of women aged 16 to over 50 tested for HIV in Bulawayo in June 2024 and that the city’s positivity rate among women is 71.7%.
In a statement on Thursday, August 15, Bulawayo Acting Town Clerk Edwin Mzingwane said the media took the council report out of context and sensationalised the information. Said Mzingwane:

Nationally the HIV prevalence for the 15-49 years age group is 10.49% and the HIV prevalence for Bulawayo is 11.75%.

Both articles took the City of Bulawayo Council report out of context and sensationalized the information.
The data was extracted from the Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid and Camera (VIAC) Programme that targets mainly HIV-positive women as we screen for cervical cancer (women who are already on Antiretroviral treatment (ART) and have been confirmed as HIV Positive) with a few who are HIV negative screened as well.
Women living with HIV are 6 times more likely to develop cervical cancer compared to women without HIV (WHO, 2024) and hence the VIAC programme aimed at early detection of cervical cancer.
VIAC is an effective way to prevent cervical cancer in women aged 30-50 years old. It involves examining the opening of the womb, or the cervix, for changes that might lead to cancer.
If these changes are detected early, the cells can be eliminated before they become cancerous. The cells are usually removed using a method called cryotherapy, or another method called Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP).
The City of Bulawayo offers VIAC services targeting mainly HIV-positive women whilst offering the service also to HIV-negative women.
Therefore, the reports cited in the above-named articles are not representative of the HIV positivity rates in general among the Bulawayo population but are skewed programmatically towards HIV-positive women attending clinics for cervical cancer screening.
The City of Bulawayo further notes the media plays a key role in disseminating health information and there is a need to ensure accurate health reports are issued as they affect the knowledge and health beliefs of the public.

Bulawayo Rejects Claims Of 90% HIV Testing Rate Among Women

A Hwange Local Board (HLB) councillor has issued a stark warning regarding the health risks facing residents of Ingagula, a residential area situated near the coal-fired Hwange Power Station, due to excessive dust pollution from haulage trucks and coal mining activities.
Ward 3 Councillor, Bryn Chikumbo, that despite numerous petitions and engagements with authorities, including the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Chinese companies involved in coal mining, the Ingagula community continues to be vulnerable to these health hazards. He said:

We are sitting on a health time bomb. The dust rising from the movement of haulage trucks is clouding the entire suburb, and we have been experiencing respiratory diseases associated with dust in our affected communities.
We have written petitions pertaining to the respiratory diseases associated with dust in our affected communities, but we haven’t got a positive response to that effect.
We have been in constant engagement with ZPC to try to find a permanent remedy, we have also been in contact with the Chinese, but what I think is key now for us in Ingagula is for them to acknowledge and put some corrective measures to ensure that this thing of pollution comes to an end…
We are vulnerable, we are exposed, the community is dying, our kids are at a higher risk, us the parents we are at higher risk.
We have got pneumococcal cases, we are still waiting for a comprehensive report, and we believe this is because of the dust we are exposed to.

In a post to a Hwange community WhatsApp group, a resident expressed frustration with the Chinese mining companies, accusing them of unsafe mining practices that have resulted in spontaneous fires starting in the area.  Said the resident:

Underground fires are common in coal mines. When coal is exposed to air and water and allowed to oxidise, it ignites itself. It is safe mining practices and risk management measures that should be put in place.
E.g. a sufficient layer of topsoil should be used to cover coal discards, but the Chinese barely do these measures.

Hwange Central MP Daniel Molokele assured the residents that he would raise the issue in Parliament. Said Molokele:

In their recent newsletter, Councillor Chikumbo said dust caused by the increased movement of trucks, coupled with ash from the power station and coke oven batteries, has worsened air pollution in Ingagula. He said:

We have been affected by ashes from the power station and coke oven batteries, but the pollution has significantly increased because of the heavy presence of trucks. You will observe that most of the vegetation around the area has changed its colour. It no longer has life due to dust.

MPox is a viral disease caused by the Monkeypox virus, which is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus, the same genus as the smallpox virus.
It is called “Monkeypox” because it was first identified in colonies of monkeys kept for research purposes in 1958.
Monkeypox can spread from infected animals to humans through direct contact with body fluids, skin lesions, or respiratory droplets.
Human-to-human transmission can occur through close physical contact, exposure to contaminated materials, or respiratory droplets.
The virus can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or through close contact.
Initial symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, and exhaustion.
This is followed by the development of a rash that evolves from macules to papules, vesicles, pustules, and finally scabs.

Bulawayo Sees Surge In Mumps Cases

Some doctors and nurses in public healthcare institutions are reportedly working in cooperation with laboratory professionals to steer patients towards using specific private sector laboratories, despite the availability of similar services at lower costs in government-run facilities.
According to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/doctors-nurses-milking-patients-through-syndicates/">The Herald</a>, some medical professionals have been observed recommending particular laboratories for various tests such as blood, urine or stool samples, and in many cases, even providing a contact number for someone who can collect the samples on the laboratory’s behalf.
The selected private laboratories are said to have staff on standby at hospitals, ready to quickly collect samples and return the results directly to the patient’s bedside.
The Medical Laboratory and Clinical Scientists Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe has vowed to take action, as they believe the actions of the laboratories are exacerbating the financial burden on patients, particularly those from low-income backgrounds who may feel compelled to use the recommended private services.
Speaking at a Health Professions Authority familiarisation meeting between councils under its purview and the media on Tuesday, 06 August, the med lab council’s registrar, Agnes Chigora, said:

If you go to Government institutions, at times you see motorbikes stationed there. Does that mean the public lab which is there is not offering those tests?
It seems they are working with other health practitioners, with nurses and doctors and they ensure that for any lab tests which are required, they demand that those tests come from specific laboratories.
As a client, if I send my parent to a public institution, it means that is what I can afford. But for someone to insist that they want a test done at a particular lab, which is very expensive, it’s not fair to our people.

Chigora urged the public to report any instances of such malpractice to her offices or the Health Professions Authority.
She also warned medical practitioners involved in this practice that they could face disciplinary action.
Chigora asserted that the primary duty of doctors and nurses was to provide quality care to their patients, and this included making informed decisions about laboratory services that are in the best interest of the patient, not their financial gain.
To combat the corruption, Chigora said the council, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, would soon carry out a certification exercise for all laboratories to ensure that only those operating above board remained in operation. She said:

The Health Professions Authority does the routine inspection (of the labs), but we as a council, are going a step further.

We have trained auditors who are going around laboratories and we have a certain level, which the labs have to reach.

Pharmacists Council of Zimbabwe registrar Alois Karonga said the council had received various reports of malpractices among pharmacists. He said:

Issues of malpractices that the council has dealt with which are on the rise, among others, include dispensing prescription medicines without prescription from medical doctors, selling expired and unregistered medicines and leaving pharmacies operating without registered pharmacists.
These are some of the transgressions for which the council has brought pharmacists up for disciplinary inquiries.

Doctors And Nurses Colluding With Private Labs To Rip Off Patients

The Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Zimbabwe’s largest medical facility, is reportedly facing a severe shortage of essential drugs and medical equipment, putting millions of lives at risk as most patients cannot afford private medical care.
Many patients at the hospital are often forced to wait in long queues, only to be directed to purchase the necessary medicines from private pharmacies, as the hospital struggles to provide these essential items.
The Independent reported inside sources as saying the hospital is struggling to supply basic items such as gloves, syringes, and other critical equipment.
The hospital authorities have reportedly warned the staff against divulging any information about the ongoing crisis, further exacerbating the challenges faced by both patients and healthcare workers. Said a source who preferred anonymity:

It has become a nightmare for us as staff at Parirenyatwa. There are serious shortages of medication, needles, syringes, cotton, alcohol (medicinal), methylated spirit, sodium hypochlorite, and sometimes even latex gloves and stationery.
For example, the lift linking the ground floor to the third floor is frequently out of order, forcing us to carry patients up the ramp. It is torture. The lift gets fixed but only works for a few days.
Authorities have warned us not to speak out, but remaining silent affects our patients, who come with various illnesses.

Parirenyatwa Hospital’s public relations manager, Terrence Mautsi, admitted there were shortages but attributed them to erratic supplies. Said Mautsi:

Indeed, we have been having erratic supplies due to shortages from our suppliers.
This is a national problem affecting all public hospitals in the country. As the largest referral centre, Parirenyatwa is the most affected because we offer the widest spectrum of specialist services in the country.
That being said, we continue to provide services, with patients being given prescriptions for medicines and supplies that are in short supply after being seen by our doctors.

Over the years, Zimbabwe’s health sector has faced significant challenges, including the departure of medical personnel to other countries where the pay and working conditions may be more favourable.
Preferred destinations include Britain, Canada, the United States, and South Africa.
Broader economic factors, such as the rising cost of living, high unemployment, stagnant salaries, currency instability, and shortages of foreign currency and basic commodities like electricity and water, have created difficulties for many Zimbabweans.

Parirenyatwa Faces Critical Shortage Of Essential Drugs, Equipment

The Zimbabwean government has announced that the country is now free from cholera, with no new cases reported in the past 30 days.
During a weekly post-cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere provided an update on the cholera situation in the country.
Muswere said Zimbabwe recorded its first cholera case in February 2023, which then spread to most parts of the country, leading to a declared national outbreak.
However, the minister noted that the country’s cholera burden is now officially over, with no new cases reported in all 63 districts. He said:

The Ministry of Health and Child Care would also want to inform the nation that as of today we have had 30 days without a single case of cholera in all our 63 districts and that the last case was on 30 June 2024 in Beitbridge.
Therefore, we are now declaring that the cholera outbreak, which started in February 2023, as officially ended. However, the public is encouraged to continue observing hygiene and sanitation at all times.

The Minister of Health and Childcare Douglas Mombeshora urged members of the public to continue with good hygiene and sanitation practices. Said Mombeshora:

A lot of people relax when we say cholera is gone. What it means is that the interventions that we undertook as ministry and as government, those interventions have yielded the results that we wanted that is to make sure that we suppress cholera.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness that can spread rapidly in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.
The disease is primarily spread through the consumption of contaminated food or water, such as water sources that have been polluted by faecal matter containing the cholera bacteria.
The main symptom of cholera is profuse, watery diarrhoea that can lead to rapid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Other symptoms may include vomiting, muscle cramps, and rapid heart rate.

Zimbabwe Declares Cholera Outbreak Over After 30 Days Without New Cases

Zimbabwe faces a significant funding shortfall for its national condom programme, needing to raise over US$10 million to ensure adequate supplies in 2025 and 2026.
The country currently has three main condom distribution channels:

<li>Public sector: Free condoms provided through government health facilities.</li>
<li>Social sector: Condoms sold at subsidized prices.</li>
<li>Commercial sector: Condoms sold at full market prices.</li>
</ul>
The majority of Zimbabweans who use condoms obtain them from the free public sector program.
This public condom programme has been primarily funded by two major donors – the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund.
However, PEPFAR and the Global Fund have recently announced they will be withdrawing funding for Zimbabwe’s public condom programme in 2026. This will create a significant funding gap.
According to Anna Machiya, the Ministry of Health’s national coordinator for STI prevention and condom distribution, Zimbabwe needs to raise nearly $1.8 million to cover the funding shortfall for female condoms in 2025, and an additional $9.4 million for both male and female condoms in 2026. The Global Fund committed US$3.3 million towards condom procurement in 2024 and PEPFAR funds that have been committed to procure male and female condoms including lubricants amount to US$7.1 million.
For 2025, we have US$1.96 million committed from Global Fund and about US$2.15 million committed from PEPFAR so we have a funding gap of US$1.8 million for female condoms.
In 2026, there is no committed funding for both male and female condoms so we require US$9.4 million.

Machiya said the funding gap would need to be funded from Treasury as well as the National Aids Trust Fund (Aids Levy). She said:

We started some advocacy sometime back around increasing domestic funding and removal of VAT and duty for commercial sector condoms to create an environment where we have more commercial sector players coming into the condom market with cheaper brands of condoms.
This will relieve the burden on free public condom distribution as people may migrate to use those other condom brands that will be available on the market.
These are issues that we are pursuing as a Ministry and as a programme.

The U.S. and other organizations help pay for the free condoms, but they will stop funding in 2026. Zimbabwe needs to raise money to buy enough condoms. They hope to get some money from taxes and make condoms cheaper in stores. They are also trying to get more people to use condoms. Public sector condom use in Zimbabwe has increased.

Zimbabwe Needs US$10 Million To Procure Condoms

Thokozani Khupe, a proportional representative Member of Parliament (MP) for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, has courageously shared her experience of battling breast cancer not once, but twice.
Khupe, now 59 years old, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2011. She underwent treatment and surgery, which resulted in the surgical removal of one of her breasts.
In a motion presented to Parliament on Thursday, Khupe revealed that she is now battling another form of breast cancer, Lobular cancer, after being initially misdiagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer. She said (via <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/chiwenga-not-anointed-to-lead-zanu-pf-after-mnangagwa-party-spokesman/">ZimLive</a>):
<blockquote>
When I was first diagnosed in Zimbabwe, they said I had ovarian cancer which had long gone. I proceeded to South Africa. Again, they said I had ovarian cancer stage 4.
I started chemotherapy in the form of injections and tablets every two weeks. I have never been sick like that in my entire life.
I was vomiting to the extent that I had a bucket on the side of my bed all the time. I had terrible diarrhoea to the extent that I would sometimes mess myself.
I was draining 6 litres of water every two weeks because it was filling up quickly – this water was a sign that my tumours were not responding to treatment hence they continued to generate this water.
I was like a nine-month-pregnant woman, I had difficulty breathing and walking. It took me time to turn when I was sleeping because I had to move an equivalent of 6kgs which I was carrying.
My doctor in South Africa then referred me back to Zimbabwe so that I could be under Palliative Care, which is the treatment and support you receive when one has a life-limiting illness because there is no improvement.
I later proceeded to India with the help of the government. I was so excited that finally, I was going to get the best treatment because many people were saying India was the best when it comes to cancer treatment.
I did all the possible tests and the diagnosis was once more stage 4 ovarian cancer which emanated from the breast cancer I had 12 years ago.
I started chemotherapy, I was supposed to do 18 cycles for 18 weeks. I was draining 6 litres of water every week.
After 15 cycles, my doctor in India said I was not responding to treatment because if I was responding the water was going to dry up but in my case, there was no change.
He then suggested that I rather go to the United Kingdom because the UK was advanced when it comes to cancer treatment.
They had modern medications and a lot of options and they also did clinical trials. In India, I was losing weight every day because I had difficulty eating to the extent that I was then weighing 68 kg. I was a moving skeleton.
All this is pointing to wrong diagnosis resulting in wrong treatment.
I then proceeded to the UK and did all the necessary tests, CT/PET scans, bloods and biopsies. The diagnosis was that I had Lobular breast cancer.
The doctor then said I was going to do 18 cycles of chemotherapy every week. I only drained water on 22nd December 2023 and started treatment on 9th January 2024. I never drained any water again.
It gradually drained away cycle after cycle. After the fourth cycle, the water disappeared, a sign that the medication was working perfectly well. I never had any side effects.
All this was a good example of the right diagnosis which subsequently resulted in the right treatment.
This is a clear indication that with modern technology, you are likely to get the right diagnosis and with the right diagnosis you are likely to get the right medication, hence my emphasis on state-of-the-art equipment.
I am a living example because my cancer was at stage four. I had to do 18 cycles, one every week and each cycle ranged from 2,000 pounds to 2,500 pounds every week.
I was sometimes doing blood transfusions because my haemoglobin was low all the time because of chemotherapy.
I would pay between £1,700 and £2,000. At times, I would do CT/PET scans to establish the extent of the cancer.
Whether cancer cells were being destroyed by the medication which cost £3,900, there were other costs for bloods, doctors’ fees and several others. How many people can afford this? The answer is very few…
I am saying this so that citizens must never be afraid if ever they are confronted with such a situation. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011.
In 2023, I had a second cancer attack which came like a thief without giving any notice. By the time I realised it, it had spread.
With all this, I was never afraid because I knew that with God’s grace and good medical attention, all was well.
I vowed that I was never going to allow cancer to take me down. I developed this fighting spirit and I am going to fight cancer to the end until it leaves my body. I know and believe that one day, my body will be free from cancer.
This is the attitude that all those with cancer must have. I have so far gone through my first phase of treatment. I am now in my second phase of treatment but look at me, I am doing perfectly well.
The only thing with cancer treatment is that there are good days and bad days. During the bad days, side effects kick in and they are at times very unpleasant. This week is my bad week, but l am managing.
</blockquote>
Khupe then urged fellow parliamentarians to push the government to allocate more resources towards cancer treatment and awareness programmes. She said:

I now therefore, call upon this House to: request government to immediately start and intensify cancer awareness programmes in collaboration with other organisations and foundations like the Thokozani Khupe Cancer Foundation in all the 35,000 villages in Zimbabwe and all towns so that citizens are made aware of the scourge of cancer; Implore Government to invest in state-of-the-art equipment for Mpilo and Parirenyatwa Hospitals as starting point and equip these two hospitals with modern Computed Tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) Scans, Radiation machines and all kinds of chemotherapies for all stages of cancer; and Government to further move with speed and fully fund universities so that they start, without any further delays, researching on new and modern cancer medicines.

In a move to safeguard healthcare services, the government has announced that hospitals and clinics across the country will be exempted from load shedding and will also be fitted with solar power systems to guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply.
Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora, speaking to the <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/uninterrupted-power-supply-for-hospitals-clinics-minister/">Sunday News</a>, said the government recognises the critical need for continuous power in healthcare facilities.
As such, prepaid electricity meters will also be removed from hospitals and health centres, as these institutions may not always have the funds to buy ZESA tokens. He said:
<blockquote>
Indeed, it is true that some areas have problems accessing electricity but the plan is to ensure that our hospitals are all electrified and are solar-equipped for backup because some of them have now gotten to a stage where they use solar instead of using grid electricity.
The problem that we have is that our major hospitals like Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe Hospitals have not been equipped with solar systems as a backup and in the event of a fault, operations are crippled.
We have since agreed with the Ministry of Energy to ensure that the hospitals do not face power interruptions.
Some clinics have prepaid meters and we agreed that prepaid electricity should be removed from hospitals and health facilities because sometimes they may not have money to buy electricity when they need it.

Energy and Power Development Minister, Edgar Moyo, said key strategic institutions such as hospitals should not suffer power cuts at all. He said:

As a ministry, we do not want all our strategic institutions to be affected by load shedding. These key institutions like hospitals must not suffer power cuts at all.
Sometimes it is because there will be faults that we find the hospitals with no power but soon after they are rectified power is restored.
If these institutions are being affected by load shedding and it is not happening that they are exempted, then that is a cause for concern.

Load shedding refers to the intentional and controlled interruption of electricity supply to manage demand and prevent a total blackout of the power grid.
Zimbabwe has experienced recurring and prolonged episodes of load shedding in recent years due to a combination of factors which include ageing power infrastructure and droughts that have reduced water levels at the Kariba hydroelectric power station, which is a major source of power.
Load shedding schedules are implemented across the country, with households and businesses experiencing power cuts that can last for several hours per day, sometimes up to 18 hours in extreme cases.
The load shedding has had significant impacts on businesses, industries, and daily life, hampering economic productivity, disrupting essential services, and causing inconvenience to citizens.

The government is making sure hospitals and clinics have power all the time and are getting solar power too. They are removing prepaid meters so these places always have electricity, even if they don't have money to buy it. Hospitals like Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe will also get solar power in case something goes wrong with the regular power. The Energy Minister said hospitals are important and should never have power cuts. Load shedding can happen when there is not enough electricity, causing problems for everyone. "No Load Shedding, Prepaid Meters For Hospitals And Clinics"

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged governments to enhance COVID-19 surveillance and bolster hospital capacity for patient treatment.
This guidance comes in response to a rise in COVID-19 cases reported in several countries among pilgrims returning from the recent Hajj in Mecca.
In Zimbabwe, several public figures, including former footballer Norman Maroto and CCC Senator Murisi Zwizwai, have passed away due to flu-like illnesses in recent weeks.
There has been public speculation linking the increase in severe flu cases to coronavirus, a claim that the government has denied.
In a letter dated July 4, 2024, addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Aspect Maunganidze, WHO country representative Desta Tiruneh emphasized the importance of ensuring sufficient oxygen availability in healthcare facilities to manage acute cases effectively. Wrote Tiruneh:

WHO has received a reported rise in a number of COVID-19 cases in some countries among pilgrims returning from the recent Hajj in Mecca. Countries with returning pilgrims carry a risk of a rise in new COVID-19 infections.
All countries concerned have been advised to heighten their readiness measures in case of a surge in cases.
The following measures are being proposed to countries for consideration to limit further spread of the virus:
<ul>
<li>Heighten COVID-19 surveillance by screening at the points of entry to identify (symptomatic) infected persons.</li>
<li>Knowing that the majority of cases may be asymptomatic and in view of limited testing advise all returnees to self-isolate for 5 days for those without symptoms and 7 days for those with symptoms.</li>
<li>Emphasize personal protection by use of masks, hand washing and avoiding public gatherings through risk communication activities.</li>
<li>Develop and run appropriate messages on electronic billboards at the airports on the current situation, risk of infection, prevention and where to seek care if sick.</li>
<li>Empower the people to seek for care when they don’t feel well but as a start, home care is recommended for those with mild symptoms.</li>
<li>Notify health facilities of the potential increase in cases and the need for a raised index of suspicion for COVID-19 especially in situations with limited testing capacity.</li>
<li>Ensure the availability of enough oxygen in the facilities for care of acute cases. Stock RDTs for diagnosis in facilities.</li>
<li>Undertake sufficient communication to the public to take personal responsibility and isolate themselves if they suspect to be infected and to seek care when ill.</li>
</ul>

Addressing members of the National EMTCT (Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission) Validation Committee last week, Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora said the implementation of the Hepatitis B vaccine is a crucial step towards the triple elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver. The hepatitis B virus (HBV), which causes the illness, is primarily transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, or saliva.
Many people with hepatitis B don’t show any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can include fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and dark urine.
Hepatitis B can be either acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). Acute hepatitis B typically resolves on its own within a few months.
Chronic hepatitis B can last a lifetime and increase the risk of liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

Zimbabwe To Introduce Universal Hepatitis B Vaccination For Newborns

Studies on HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe have found that communities that practice polygamy tend to have lower rates of HIV infection compared to other settings, reported <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2024/07/03/polygamous-communities-have-lowest-hiv-burden-in-zimbabwe/">Health Times</a>.
Polygamy refers to the practice of one man being married to multiple women at the same time.
In Zimbabwe, the HIV response emphasizes the importance of individuals limiting themselves to one sexual partner, as having multiple concurrent partners significantly increases the risk of HIV infection.
While numerous studies conducted across Sub-Saharan Africa have found that the practice of polygamy is associated with an increased risk of new HIV infections, some research also suggests that certain cultural practices observed within polygamous settings may play a role in regulating sexual behaviour and potentially mitigating HIV transmission in these communities.
Mashonaland West Province, for example, is a high HIV burden province in Zimbabwe with an estimated population of 1,245,000 and an estimated 143,000 people living with HIV from its seven administrative districts.
Interestingly, Kariba District, which is known for having a higher prevalence of polygamous marriages, has the lowest HIV prevalence rates in the province.
Davison Mamombe, the National AIDS Council Programs Officer for Mashonaland West Province revealed that Kariba, despite being a polygamous community, has the lowest HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) burden in the province. He said:

In terms of the highest disease burden, Mhondoro Ngezi has the highest HIV burden in the province at 14.3% followed by Chegutu at 13.7% then Zvimba, at 12.6%, Makonde at 12%, Hurungwe at 11.06% and Kariba has 9%.
Kariba becomes unique in the sense that we have people who have strong cultural roots and those people practice polygamy.
However for an outsider to penetrate their circles, it becomes a challenge so because of that, HIV prevalence in those communities is very low including sexually transmitted infections.

In Matabeleland North province, Tsholotsho District has the highest HIV prevalence at 21.9% while Binga, also a highly polygamous community has the lowest HIV prevalence at 5.3%.
In a previous interview with the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/why-binga-has-low-hiv-prevalence/">Chronicle</a>, Amon Mpofu, the National AIDS Council’s (NAC) national director of monitoring and evaluation, highlighted that the Tonga people in Binga had valuable insights to share about how their cultural practices and beliefs have contributed to a lower HIV prevalence in their community compared to other regions in the country. He said:

HIV is a sexually transmitted disease as we all know and this means Tonga values are strong and as a result, the transmission is low. They also have strong values when it comes to marriage. They avoid casual sex and value marriage, something which we should all emulate.

However, National AIDS Council Chief Executive Officer, Dr Benard Madzima said polygamy was not the factor behind the low HIV prevalence in communities where polygamy is prevalent. He said:

Maybe the protective factor is not necessarily polygamy. The prevalence might be low but to attribute it to polygamy that’s where my question is.
