Some nurses in Harare, Zimbabwe, are reportedly charging people living with HIV small “fees” for access to antiretroviral (ARV) medication, as the country grapples with a worsening ARV shortage.
The crisis stems from a suspension of foreign aid by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who halted all international assistance for 90 days with immediate effect on 20 January. 
The Trump administration subsequently disbanded the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and extended the aid freeze for a further 30 days, until 20 May.
Stanley Takaona, president of the Zimbabwe HIV/AIDS Activist Union Community Trust, told Health Policy Watch that the aid cut by the United States has placed the country in a very difficult situation.
The government’s pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programme, aimed at populations with high HIV exposure, such as sex workers, has also been suspended amid the broader cuts to global aid under the Trump administration.
As of 2022, an estimated 1.3 million Zimbabweans were living with HIV, with around 1.2 million on ARV treatment. That progress is now under threat due to the disrupted medicine supply.
Despite having made major strides in the fight against HIV, becoming one of only five African nations to meet the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by 2023, Zimbabwe now faces uncertainty.
At that time, 95% of people living with HIV were aware of their status, 98% of those were on treatment, and 95% of patients on treatment had achieved viral suppression.
Long queues have become the norm at HIV treatment centres, and patients fear for their futures.
A Harare resident, speaking anonymously to Health Policy Watch, said that some patients have resorted to bribing nurses to receive a six-month supply of ARVs. Said the patient:

Many HIV positive people in my area, including myself are now bribing nurses at local clinics in order to get the usual six months allocation of treatment drugs.

A nurse at a clinic in Harare, speaking to Health Policy Watch on condition of anonymity, admitted that some are charging a small fee for ARVs to supplement their meagre salaries. Said the nurse:

It’s our time to make money from the desperate HIV patients because our salaries alone can’t sustain us and so, with the now scarce ARVs, we just put a small fee on them for our own benefit in our backdoor deals with patients.

However, Zimbabwean authorities have denied reports that antiretroviral (ARV) drugs have run out. During a parliamentary question-and-answer session in February, Health Minister Douglas Mombeshora assured the nation that access to HIV treatment would continue despite uncertainties surrounding global aid.
Mombeshora claimed that Zimbabwe had secured enough ARV stock to last at least the next six months.

Key stakeholders, including Cabinet ministers and Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, were expected to attend the launch.
Rudo Chitambira, a senior executive at the Ministry of Health and Child Care, said the initiative will focus on the worst-affected areas, starting with Mbare, and will extend to other parts of the capital in the coming weeks. Said Chitambira:

We are dealing with more than just bedbugs. This is an indication of broader issues with sanitation, and we need a coordinated response that involves government, local authorities, and the community.
The operation will not only address immediate pest control but also seek to rehabilitate sanitation infrastructure and raise awareness on the importance of hygiene in preventing such infestations.

Mbare is currently dealing with a bedbug outbreak, and residents, especially those living in the flats, are having a tough time keeping the infestation under control.
In response, the Harare City Council has kicked off a fumigation drive and activated an Incident Management System to better coordinate pest control efforts.

The Zimbabwean healthcare system is beset by multifaceted challenges, precipitating a pronounced deterioration in the quality and accessibility of healthcare services.
The confluence of infrastructural deficits, human resource constraints, and financial impediments has resulted in a precarious healthcare environment.
The healthcare system is in a critical state, characterised by inadequate pain management, makeshift treatment, and substandard infrastructure.
Of late, we have witnessed first-hand patients enduring excruciating pain to death without access to essential analgesics for managing pain, while others receive inadequate care for injuries, such as broken limbs wrapped with improvised cardboard splints. 
Furthermore, the prevalence of patients lying on bare floors or rusty beds with worn-out mattresses underscores the dire need for improved healthcare infrastructure.
The alarming situation is exacerbated by a perceived lack of urgency or effective response to address these systemic issues, precipitating a state of emergency in the healthcare sector. 
The scarcity of essential medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals, consumables, and equipment, has resulted in the suspension of critical services, such as critical surgical procedures at Mpilo Hospital.
The dialysis machine shortage at Parirenyatwa Hospital has severely impacted the care of patients with end-stage renal disease, necessitating urgent intervention.
The healthcare system’s inability to provide quality care has led to increased morbidity and mortality, perpetuating health inequities and compromising the overall well-being of the population.
There is also a need to implement task-shifting and task-sharing strategies to optimise the utilisation of available healthcare personnel and invest in healthcare worker training and retention programs to mitigate brain drain.
The government should upgrade healthcare facilities, ensuring adequate infrastructure, equipment, and supplies.
The government should increase healthcare funding to meet the Abuja Declaration’s 15% threshold, prioritising essential services, infrastructure development, and human resource capacity building. Zimbabwe’s healthcare system has been underfunded, with the government allocating significantly less than the recommended 15% of its national budget to healthcare.
In 2023, the health and childcare ministry received only 11% of the national budget, and this allocation further decreased to 9% in 2024.
Zimbabwe’s rich mineral endowment, including platinum, diamonds, gold, and chrome, generates significant revenue, with the mining sector contributing around 15% to 20% of GDP and $2 billion to $3 billion annually.
However, despite this wealth, Zimbabwe’s healthcare system is severely underfunded, with an estimated annual funding gap of $1.3 billion to $1.5 billion.
The government allocates only around 7% to 11% of its national budget to healthcare, far below the Abuja Declaration’s recommended 15%. 
In 2023, Zimbabwe’s health budget was approximately $300 million, a fraction of the estimated need. The lack of prioritisation of healthcare funding is attributed to various factors, including corruption, mismanagement, and competing priorities, resulting in a healthcare system plagued by shortages of medical supplies, equipment, and personnel, with dire consequences for the population’s health and well-being.
Zimbabwe’s health sector is experiencing significant morbidity due to systemic issues, including corrupt public procurement practices leading to stockouts of essential medicines, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and decreased confidence in the healthcare system. 
The lack of governance and accountability has put Zimbabwe’s healthcare system on the verge of collapse, resulting in suboptimal health outcomes, increased mortality rates, and compromised healthcare delivery, ultimately exacerbating health inequities and poor population health.
Insufficient budgetary allocations and failure to implement effective health system reforms have further perpetuated this cycle, underscoring the need for strengthened health system governance and accountability mechanisms.

Is Zimbabwe's Health Care System On The Verge Of Collapse?

Efforts to eradicate bed bugs (tsikidzi) in Harare’s Mbare suburb are proving ineffective, with the insects showing resistance to the chemicals used in the ongoing fumigation campaign.
Harare City Epidemiologist and Disease Control Officer, Michael Vhere, told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/bed-bugs-appear-resistant-to-insecticides-as-fears-are-raised-outbreak-will-spread-to-other-areas/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> that the initial chemical failed to control the infestation. Said Vera:

The insecticide we used to control the bed bugs faced some resistance, and we immediately switched to another one. Results on the new drug effectiveness are expected today (Tuesday).
We have now reached 64% in terms of our spraying target, but we should have completed fumigation of the 5700 housing units if people had cooperated.
The main challenge is that people are not taking heed of our call to avail themselves when we fumigate homes.
Most of the residents are not available, and they lock their doors, leaving no one attending our spraying teams in the suburb.

He said the Council will begin fumigating public transport vehicles, including kombis and buses, next week to prevent the spread of bugs to other areas.

Mbare Tsikidzi Show Resistance To Pesticides

A South African national working in Bulawayo was airlifted back to his home country on Monday after falling seriously ill and reportedly failing to receive the urgent medical care he needed in Zimbabwe.
According to a statement posted by the Limpopo Provincial Government on X (formerly Twitter), the unnamed patient was first transported by road from Bulawayo to Beitbridge, a journey of over 280 kilometres, before being flown by helicopter to Limpopo province.
Upon arrival, the patient was received by Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and the province’s Health MEC, Dieketseng Mashego.
Photographs released by provincial authorities show the stretchered patient being received by the two officials at the landing site.
However, critics on social media have questioned why the Premier and MEC, such high-ranking government officials, were present to receive a single patient.
Many wondered what was so exceptional about this particular patient that warranted the attention of the provincial leadership.
“The patient could not receive the necessary medical treatment when he fell ill in Bulawayo,” the Limpopo Government said.
The incident has reignited the ongoing debate over cross-border healthcare pressures between Zimbabwe and South Africa, particularly the strain placed on South African public hospitals by foreign nationals.
In recent years, Zimbabwean citizens have increasingly sought free medical treatment in South African public institutions—a point of growing political and public contention.
Just a few days ago, a pregnant Zimbabwean woman was publicly humiliated and chased away from Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria West by a group of South African women, who accused her of burdening the healthcare system.
A video of the confrontation went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and sparking renewed discussion about healthcare access and xenophobia.
The women, seen in the video shouting at the expectant mother, claimed that Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government does not compensate South Africa for the medical services used by its nationals.
This issue first gained international attention in August 2022, when then-Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba came under fire for berating a Zimbabwean patient at Bela Bela Hospital.
In the widely circulated video, Ramathuba told the patient that healthcare was the responsibility of Zimbabwe’s government and criticised the growing presence of foreign nationals in South Africa’s healthcare system.
She defended her comments by arguing that the influx of patients from neighbouring countries places unsustainable pressure on local hospitals and provincial health budgets.

South African Worker Falls Ill, Airlifted To Limpopo After "Failing To Receive Necessary Treatment" In Zimbabwe

The City of Harare has appealed to residents of Mbare to grant City Health workers access to their homes for bedbug (tsikidzi) fumigation, warning that refusal may lead to police-assisted enforcement.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the city reminded residents that the fumigation campaign is part of a public health initiative aimed at eradicating a widespread bedbug infestation.
The first round of fumigation began on 7 April 2025, targeting 5,450 rooms in Mbare Flats. According to the Harare City Council, 64% of the targeted units had been fumigated as of last week.
However, health teams have encountered resistance, with some residents reportedly refusing to open their doors to fumigation teams. Reads the statement:

We have noted with concern reports that some occupiers of Mbare flats are refusing to open their doors to City Health workers who want to fumigate their premises against bedbugs (tsikidzi).
We encourage the residents to allow health workers immediate access to the premises or risk enforcement using police.
This will also mean cancelling the current leases since the apartments are owned by the City of Harare.
Residents’ health is of utmost importance and the City of Harare will use every available means to gain access for fumigation purposes to protect every resident in Harare.

Meanwhile, George Charamba, the Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications in the Office of the President and Cabinet, suggested that some residents refusing access to health officials may be involved in illegal activities.
Posting on X under his handle Jamwanda, Charamba warned that residents blocking the fumigation process would face consequences, adding that full cooperation is necessary to complete the operation. He wrote:

City Of Harare Tsikidzi Fumigation Faces Resistance From Mbare Residents

Douglas Nzombe Chiutsi, a prominent pharmacist in Mutare, has had his trading licence revoked by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) following a series of serious violations.
Until April 2024, Chiutsi served as the managing director of Healthwell Pharmacy (Pvt) Ltd, which operated as Clique Pharmacy in Mutare.
However, in a circular issued on April 7, 2025, MCAZ’s Director-General Richard Rukwata confirmed that Chiutsi’s licence was cancelled due to a range of offences committed during his tenure, including the sale of unregistered drugs.
The cancellation was formally communicated to Chiutsi on August 2, 2024, though it has only now been made public.
Clique (Healthwell) Pharmacy was listed alongside six other pharmacies in Harare and five other licence holders in the MCAZ’s announcement. Wrote Rukwata:

MCAZ advises its stakeholders of the cancellation of the following Wholesale Dealers Permits, Pharmacy Licence and Persons Licences. The cancellation periods will lapse on the dates indicated.

Despite having his licence revoked by MCAZ until 2027 and being banned from dealing in medicines for three years, pharmacist Chiutsi continues to defy the ban.
He is reportedly operating a new pharmacy, Alleviate Pharmacy, located just a stone’s throw away from the scene of his previous offences, with MCAZ aware of his actions.
Chiutsi, who has faced multiple detentions at Mutare Remand Prison on fraud and forgery charges, was arrested earlier this year while attending to clients at Alleviate Pharmacy.
He is currently out on bail and appeared in court on April 24, facing charges of forgery. He is set to appear in court again on April 28, accused of defrauding his former employer of US$260,000.

Mutare Pharmacist's Licence Revoked After Selling Unregistered Drugs

Former Studio 263 actor Tinopona “Tintin” Katsande has issued a stark warning about the dire state of Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, describing the ongoing crisis as a “silent genocide” caused by the severe shortage of essential medications.
In a heartfelt post on her Facebook page on Sunday, Katsande expressed her concern over the increasing number of deaths in government hospitals, attributing them to the inability of many patients to afford the necessary treatments. She wrote:

IF YOU DON’T HAVE MONEY TO BUY YOUR OWN MEDICATION AT GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS, even down to the actual needle for injections at some hospitals, 9 out of 10 times, you die because you didn’t get help, NOT BECAUSE ‘GOD WILLED IT’.
Our family members, colleagues, and even enemies are dying without a second thought…
There are no medicines, no beds, and hospital staff provide conflicting or inadequate information or diagnoses about patients (causing confusion even among themselves because they are clueless).
They don’t know how to tell a desperate patient, ‘We know what needs to be done, but sorry, we can’t help because we don’t have the resources to save you.’
Basically, people are being discharged to fend for themselves… No, this is unacceptable. This is not how things should be.

She raised further alarm over the dire state of Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, recounting distressing personal accounts of medical negligence that have claimed lives.
Katsande shared a heart-wrenching story from just days ago, when a baby who had allegedly been discharged from Parirenyatwa Hospital tragically passed away.
She attributed the death to what she described as sheer negligence by the medical staff, coupled with confusion on the part of the doctors and nurses.
In a separate incident, Katsande revealed that a 16-year-old Lower Sixth student from Mutoko died from an asthma attack after the hospital, in a shocking lapse, had no oxygen, no nebuliser, and not even the basic asthma inhaler that is readily available in most pharmacies.
Katsande also took aim at the state-controlled media, mocking recent reports claiming that Zimbabwe now has a six-month supply of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). She said:

Ukuwo ma newspaper anoti don’t worry 6 months supply of ARVS in the country availed, 2 months later vakuti, 2 months supply available meaning 6 months supply was a hoax???
</blockquote>
She further alleged that some clinics have been informing HIV/AIDS patients that there are no ARVs available at all. Said Katsande:
<blockquote>
I’m so, so angry… There’s no accountability for this NATIONAL DISASTER, which is affecting me worse than the cancer did.
</blockquote>
Katsande said in Zimbabwe, if you fall ill and can’t afford medical treatment, you might as well start preparing your own coffin, as it’s a tragic reality for many. She added:

Anyway, I’m off to bury Mai Kandice from Mabvuku, who passed away after yesterday’s visiting hour while waiting for blood because the government hospital didn’t have the blood that could have saved her. She was anaemic and had been moving around unwell—she didn’t know.
</blockquote>
She concluded her impassioned remarks by criticising Zimbabweans for their tendency to bury their heads in the sand and remain passive in the face of their struggles, saying:

Let’s just keep saying ‘it’s tough,’ crying, looking the other way, and life goes on.

Katsande’s comments come amid growing frustration over the state of Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, where the scarcity of vital drugs, medical equipment, and basic supplies has left the majority without the necessary care to survive.
He words serve as a poignant reminder of the daily struggles faced by those relying on public healthcare, where patients are increasingly forced to rely on their own resources to access life-saving treatments.

Former Studio 263 Star Warns Of "Genocide" In Zimbabwe's Public Hospitals

The government of Zimbabwe has said malaria is a priority disease for elimination in the country, although the path to eradicating it has not been easy.
In a statement marking World Malaria Day on 25 April 2025, the Ministry of Health and Childcare (MOHCC) highlighted progress in reducing malaria incidence from 32 per 1,000 people in 2020 to 4 per 1,000 in 2024, while deaths dropped from 400 in 2020 to 109 in 2024.
The Ministry also warned that these gains remain fragile, as climate change and the rise of economic activities, such as artisanal mining, which create mosquito breeding grounds, threaten to undo the progress made so far. Part of the statement reads:

The increase in rainfall and temperature has contributed to the increase in malaria transmission during the current malaria season. 
By week 15, malaria cases had increased by 107% from 17,539 cases in 2024 to 36,423 cases in 2025. Malaria deaths increased from 34 in 2024 to 85 deaths in 2025 during the same period. 
The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) encourages all communities at risk to use the preventive measures including sleeping in sprayed houses, sleeping under treated insecticide nets and using repellents.
Late presentation has contributed to the increase in malaria deaths. We encourage all patients with signs of malaria to visit their Village Health Worker or nearest health facility for treatment.
The country has 31 elimination districts. In 2024 seven (7) districts had no local malaria transmission and in 2025 six (6) districts have no local transmission. We applaud the communities for their participation in malaria prevention and control activities.
The Ministry expressed its determination to protect the achievements made so far by ensuring availability of all malaria prevention and control commodities at all levels of the health delivery system until we attain malaria elimination status.

The Ministry said that the Government is committed to increasing domestic funding to bridge the gap left by the withdrawal of US Government support.
The statement added that the Malaria Control Programme in Zimbabwe continues to receive both technical and financial backing from various Government Ministries, parastatals, the Global Fund, CHAI, PLAN, and many other organisations, as well as from local communities and their leadership.

Zimbabwe is trying to get rid of malaria, a serious disease spread by mosquitoes. The number of malaria cases and deaths has dropped, but the progress is in danger because of climate change and new activities that help mosquitoes breed. The government is asking people to use things like insecticide nets and spray to protect themselves. Some areas have already eliminated malaria, but there is still work to do. The government is working with other organizations to keep fighting malaria and make sure people have the things they need to prevent and treat it.

"Malaria Cases Drop In Zimbabwe, But Threats To Progress Remain"

Various stakeholders have expressed alarm over the spread of bed bugs (tsikidzi/intwala), which are terrorising Harare residents amid fears that the blood-sucking pests will continue to spread across the city if the local authority does not implement measures to eradicate them.
The dilapidated Mbare flats have been identified as the epicentre of the outbreak, but the bed bugs have since spread to other high-density suburbs such as Mabvuku, Kuwadzana, and Budiriro.
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume attributed the spread of bed bugs to the second-hand clothes trade, suggesting that the clothes may have become infested with the pests while in the market.
Zimbabwe Chamber of Informal Economy Association Secretary-General Wisbon Malaya urged the Harare City Council to provide chemicals for fumigation. Said Malaya:
<blockquote>
We urge the City of Harare Health Department to consider engaging in serious bed bug control through training on manufacturing homemade bed bug fumigation chemicals so that many people can fumigate their homes.
We encourage informal traders not to trade in products that carry these bugs in the meantime as a way of managing the situation.
We encourage public transport operators to fumigate their vehicles daily until the bug war is over.

Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) director Reuben Akili said:

The first thing, which we just want to take note of, is that two years ago, CHRA went to court because of the squalid living conditions of Mbare residents.

Harare Residents Alarmed By Bed Bug Outbreak

The Ministry of Health and Childcare has released the weekly disease surveillance report for the week ending 6 April 2025, covering influenza, cholera, and dysentery cases across the country.
A total of 5,727 suspected cases of influenza were reported during the week, with no associated deaths. The provinces with the highest number of reported cases were Manicaland, which recorded 1,782 cases, and Mashonaland West with 1,654 cases. The cumulative number of suspected influenza cases for the year now stands at 58,971, with no deaths recorded to date.
In terms of cholera, 10 suspected cases were reported this week. These cases were distributed across several districts: Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe recorded five cases, Shamva and Rushinga reported two cases each, and one case was reported in Bindura. The cumulative figures for cholera currently stand at 484 suspected cases, 76 confirmed cases, 8 suspected deaths, and 11 confirmed deaths.
For dysentery, 300 new cases were reported this week, with no deaths. Manicaland again had the highest number of cases at 79, followed by Mashonaland East with 58 cases. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 6,814 reported cases of dysentery and three deaths.

The Ministry of Health said many people in Manicaland and Mashonaland West have the flu. Over 5,000 cases were reported last week, but no one has died from it. Cholera is also a problem, with 10 cases reported this week. Some areas have more cases than others. Dysentery is another sickness with 300 new cases this week. Manicaland had the most cases. Since the year started, there have been a lot of cases of dysentery and a few deaths. The Ministry is watching the situation closely and trying to help those who are sick.

Influenza Cases Surge In Manicaland And Mashonaland West

A bed bug (tsikidzi) outbreak that started in the Mbare flats has now spread to other parts of Harare, leaving many residents uncomfortable and concerned about their health.
Although the City of Harare has fumigated the flats to stop the infestation, the bugs have already made their way to suburbs like Mabvuku, Kuwadzana, Budiriro, and others.
The spread is being linked to people moving between Mbare and other areas, as residents from the flats regularly interact with friends and family across the city.
A resident from one of the affected suburbs told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200041058/bed-bugs-spread-across-harare">NewsDay</a> they believe the bed bugs were brought in by visitors from Mbare. Said the resident:

I am convinced that the bugs came from my cousins who visited us from Mbare flats. They slept over at our place and soon after, we started noticing the bugs in our home.
It has been a nightmare ever since. My children are scratching themselves all night and I am at a loss as to what to do.
We have tried everything from washing our bedding to using insecticides, but nothing seems to work. It’s like these bugs are everywhere.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume told NewsDay in an interview that the city council has not yet received any official reports from the affected areas. Said Mafume:

In suburbs with detached houses, the tsikidzi do not spread. They will just affect that single house.
But for suburbs like Mbare, where there are flats, they spread faster. If people iron their clothes, they will be okay.
We have not yet received any official report. It is just that we are fumigating. We will continue to make sure that we minimise the spread.
I know we will win the war because we have fumigated once. The problem is that there were some households that were not fumigated because people were not there. We are doing the first round of fumigation.
Once we finish it, after 10 days, we will do another round to make sure that we continue to minimise the spread.
Then, we will see whether they meet for the third round of fumigation. And then we will schedule regular fumigation.

Mafume said the spread of bed bugs could be linked to the second-hand clothes trade, suggesting the bugs might have come in through clothes that were already infested while being sold at the market.

Mbare Bed Bug Infestation Spreads Across Harare

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released its weekly disease surveillance report for the week ending April 6, 2025, highlighting updates on anthrax, snake bites, and dog bites across various districts in Zimbabwe.
During the reporting week, two cases of anthrax were confirmed, with no deaths recorded. These cases were reported from Gokwe North and Gokwe South districts. This brings the cumulative total to 49 cases since the beginning of the year, with no fatalities reported to date.
Snake bites remain a public health concern, with 167 cases reported this week. Fortunately, no deaths were recorded. The cumulative number of snake bite cases is 2,193, with nine deaths reported overall.
Dog bite incidents continue to be the most frequently reported, with 646 cases recorded during the week. Of these, 140 individuals were bitten by vaccinated dogs, 136 by unvaccinated dogs, and 370 by dogs whose vaccination status could not be verified. The highest number of cases were reported in Midlands Province, which recorded 102 cases, followed by Mashonaland Central Province with 86. The cumulative number of dog bite cases has now reached 9,218, with no deaths reported.

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has recalled a batch of medication from the market due to non-compliance with quality standards.
In a statement released on Thursday, 17 April, MCAZ identified the recalled drug as Torrent Captopril 25mg tablets, manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd in India.
MCAZ Director General, Richard Rukwata, urged all licensed pharmaceutical wholesalers, pharmacies, public and private clinics, and hospitals to quarantine and cease distribution of the affected batch, Batch No. B520K001. The statement reads:

Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd is recalling units of Torrent Captopril 25mg Tablets manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, India.
The reported batch of Captopril 25mg tablets is being recalled because an out of specification (OOS) in the limit of Captopril disulfide (OOS No: OOS/BST/25/004).
Non-compliance with specifications of product quality may result in loss of function and harm to the patient.
The Authority would like to draw attention of all licensed wholesalers, pharmacies, public and private clinics and hospitals that they should quarantine any of the affected units of the reported product and cooperate with Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd and local distributors of the product in Zimbabwe during the recall process.
The general public who might have purchased same reported batch are advised to return the product to the pharmacy where they obtained the medicine.

Zimbabwe Recalls Faulty Indian-Manufactured High Blood Pressure Drug

Officials from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development will visit the Deka River in Matabeleland North to check how badly it has been polluted.
The Deka River, which flows into the Zambezi River, is heavily polluted with metals and industrial waste from coal mining and power companies, both local and foreign. 
This pollution is putting the health of nearby villagers, their animals, and even wildlife at risk.
Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Polite Kambamura, revealed the planned visit during a recent parliamentary session while responding to Hwange East MP Joseph Bonda. Said Kambamura:

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued a warning against the unauthorised advertising of unapproved medicines, particularly by social media influencers and celebrities.
In a statement, MCAZ Director-General Richard Rukwata said the unapproved promotion of medicines poses a serious risk to public health, as it can mislead consumers into using products that have not been assessed for safety, efficacy, or quality.
Rukwata urged socialites, celebrities, and influencers to refrain from advertising medicines without written approval from the MCAZ. He added:

This is in contravention of Section 40 of the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act (Chapter 15:03) (hereinafter referred to as the Act) and Section 65 of the Medicines and Allied Substances Control (General) Regulations, 1991, (S.I. 150 of 1991) (hereinafter referred to as the Regulations).
Section 40 of the Act prohibits the publication or distribution of false or misleading advertisements for medicines, stipulating that those requiring professional direction for use may only be advertised in approved medical journals or healthcare professionals.
Additionally, Section 65(1b) states that “No person shall advertise any other medicine without the approval of the Authority in writing” whilst Section 65(3) states that “No person shall advertise any medicine to members of the public in terms calculated to lead to its use for the treatment of human beings for any of the conditions set out in the Seventh Schedule”.
</blockquote>
Rukwata warned the public to be cautious of advertisements that make unrealistic claims, such as promises of instant results, 100% cure rates, or the absence of side effects, as these are often misleading. He said:

Medicines that have been approved for use typically display a unique registration number, which is assigned after evaluation of their safety and efficacy. 
Members of the public can easily verify this registration number by checking the medicines register on the MCAZ website.
 
Be cautious of advertisements making unrealistic claims, such as promises of instant results, 100% cure rates, or zero side effects, as these are often deceptive. 
Reliable advertisements should be informative, balanced, and up to date, with claims that can be substantiated.
Be cautious of advertisements that make unsubstantiated claims of being better than other brands, as these claims are often unfounded and misleading.
Prescription medicines should not be advertised for direct sale to the public. If an advertisement encourages buying a prescription medicine without consulting your medical practitioner, it is likely unapproved.
If one medicine claims to cure multiple diseases, from diabetes to cancer, it is likely a scam. Advertisements that use language intended to create fear or distress should be treated with caution. Advertisements for medicines in connection with any bonus offer or discount.

Rukwata said the MCAZ is working with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and will take the necessary measures, including prosecution, against anyone who contravenes the law.
He urged members of the public, including socialites, celebrities, and influencers, to refrain from advertising medicines without written approval from the MCAZ.

Socialites Under Fire For Promoting Unapproved Medicines

Harare East Member of Parliament, Kiven Mutimbanyoka (ZANU PF), has called for the inclusion of dark-skinned girls in billboards, television adverts, and promotional posters to discourage women from bleaching their skin.
Speaking in the National Assembly recently, Mutimbanyoka argued that the widespread use of light-skinned models in advertisements pressures dark-skinned girls to resort to illegal skin-lightening creams.
He said this issue could be addressed by replacing light-skinned models with dark-skinned ones in public media and advertising materials. Said Mutimbanyoka:

If we are to dismantle the skin-bleaching industry, we must redefine beauty standards through strategic advocacy and inclusive representation.
This means mainstreaming dark-skinned beauty in media and advertising, ensuring that billboards, television, and fashion industries showcase models and influencers of all skin tones rather than perpetuating eurocentric aesthetics.
Governments and public health institutions must work alongside media houses, influencers and cultural leaders to reshape public perceptions and affirm that all skin tones are equally beautiful.
True transformation will only be achieved when diversity is celebrated rather than corrected.
</blockquote>
Mutimbanyoka asserted that skin bleaching poses a health risk to women and unborn children, noting that socialites and influencers are actively promoting skin-lightening products on social media. He said:
<blockquote>
This House cannot afford to remain silent while unscrupulous traders profit off the suffering of our people, while socialites poison the minds of our youth and while unborn children become victims of this epidemic before they even draw their first breath.
The time for decisive legislative action is now. We must criminalise the sale and promotion of illegal skin-bleaching products, enforce stricter penalties on offenders, and hold influencers accountable for glorifying a practice that is mutilating our people.
Failure to act is not just an oversight; it is a betrayal of our duty to protect the health, dignity and future of Zimbabwe. The fight against skin bleaching must begin with a robust and targeted educational campaign aimed at dismantling the dangerous misconceptions fueling this crisis.
Consumers must be equipped with accurate, science-based knowledge on the correct use of skin care products.
</blockquote>
The legislator further claimed that light-skinned women often have easier access to jobs and opportunities than their dark-skinned counterparts, as men now tend to prefer light-skinned women, making it the prevailing standard of beauty. He said:

Skin bleaching is not simply a personal choice but a symptom of colourism, a deep-seated hierarchy that equates lighter skin with beauty, status and power. 
This damaging mindset, reinforced over generations, thrives today as men continue to uphold the myth that fairer complexions are more desirable.
In Zimbabwe, terms like “yellow bone” expose how male preferences pressure women to alter their appearance, often at the cost of their health. 
The disparity is stark: lighter-skinned women gain easier access to jobs, relationships and social capital, while darker-skinned women face systemic exclusion, branded as less attractive or valuable.
‘The psychological damage runs deep, with many women conditioned to see their natural skin as a barrier rather than a birthright. 
Though often treated as a modern trend, skin bleaching’s roots stretch back to historical systems that tied privilege to proximity to whiteness.
Today, this warped logic fuels a booming industry, profiting from insecurity and perpetuating the lie that self-worth can and should be lightened. 
The result is a cycle of harm, sustained by male-driven beauty standards that treat skin tone as currency in a rigged game of social acceptance.
Madam Speaker, the global skin-lightening market thrives on colourism, aggressively marketing these products as a gateway to beauty, success, and social mobility.

MP Calls For Use Of Dark-Skinned Models In Adverts To Combat Skin Bleaching

A doctor at Chipinge District Hospital is under investigation after a failed Caesarean Section in which he allegedly sealed the womb with a leaking bladder, causing complications that led to the death of 35-year-old Priscilla Mlambo.
Mlambo passed away last month at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, where she had been transferred for specialised care.
She left behind her three-week-old baby, now being cared for by her heartbroken husband.
In a phone interview with <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/medical-operation-boob-claims-moms-life/">The Manica Post</a>, Simangaliso Masibeke, her husband, shared the details of the events that led to his wife’s tragic death. He said:
<blockquote>
My wife underwent a Caesarean Section at Chipinge District Hospital on March 11, and three days later, she developed a swollen abdomen. When we returned to the hospital, they claimed she had excess fluids in her abdomen.
They drained the fluids, but three days later, she experienced similar symptoms. She could not eat. We took her to Mutare, where a different doctor examined her and discovered that the Caesarean Section had been botched in Chipinge.
The doctor in Mutare found that my wife did not have enough blood in her system to undergo another operation.
We learnt that the doctor who performed the initial Caesarean Section had perforated the bladder and tied the uterus together with the bladder before closing the womb.
When we visited the hospital last Thursday during lunch, we could not speak to her. Tragically, when we returned for the evening visit, we were informed that my wife had passed away.

When contacted for a comment, Chipinge District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr. Ozimmo Matekenya, told The Manica Post that he was too busy to discuss the matter.
However, a leaked audio message, allegedly from Dr. Matekenya communicating with fellow doctors in a WhatsApp group, acknowledged the mistake made by the medical practitioner who performed the Caesarean Section. It reads:

Good afternoon doctors! I am just receiving a call from a doctor in Mutare. There is a patient by the name Priscilla Mlambo who had a Caesarean Section. I think about two weeks ago. This patient was referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital two days ago, with a history of abdominal distension.
The patient also had reduced urinal output. This patient was transferred from here (Chipinge District Hospital).
So, according to the presentation made to me by the medical practitioner in Mutare, this patient was transferred there with a HB of nine, (hemoglobin (Hb). Her level of 9 g/dL is considered low and could indicate anaemia, which is a condition where the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues), only to do a check FBC it was eight.
They took the patient to theatre to do exploratory laparotomy (a surgical procedure where the abdomen is opened to allow a surgeon to visually examine the organs and tissues within). They were thinking that this patient was having an abscess (localised collection of pussy, often caused by a bacterial infection, that can occur anywhere in the body, including the skin). Pelvic abscess.
However, upon opening, they noted that there was no abscess at all, but the bladder was actually leaking into the peritoneum. Pakangoedzwawo kusungwa sungwa kudii dii (There was an effort made to tie the area).
Postoperatively, the patient collapsed and died. So the recommendation from the obstetrician was that you guys perforating the bladder is not a problem. Let us check whether we have perforated the bladder.
Just closing without repairing the bladder, that is where the crime starts. If there is anyone who did this Caesarean Section, please we need to talk just as a learning curve. We need to establish whether really the doctor who did the Caesarean Section noticed that the bladder had been perforated.

A mom died after a bad operation to have her baby. The doctor closed her womb with a leaking bladder. The mom had a swollen tummy and couldn't eat. Another doctor found the mistake and said she couldn't have another operation. The mom's husband is heartbroken and taking care of their baby. The hospital doctor didn't want to talk about it. Other doctors said the first doctor made a big mistake. There is an investigation to learn from the mistake and prevent it from happening again.

Mother Of Newborn Dies From Complications Of Botched C-Section

Health and Child Care Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora has said the country has secured an additional three-month supply of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, ensuring that current stock levels will last until the end of September.
Addressing Senators during Thursday’s question-and-answer session in the Senate, Mombeshora said that the new consignment, acquired two weeks ago, will supplement an earlier six-month stock purchased at the beginning of the year. Said Mombeshora:

Let me start by saying that we buy a six-month’s supply. For the first six months up to June, we have enough supply of medicines and enough supply of tablets.
Last week, after buying the second batch, we will cover another three months from the end of June to the end of September.
We are using money raised locally. We have the National AIDS Trust Fund, which receives contributions from every employed person, coming from taxes . . . the AIDS levy that is taxed.
So, I instructed the responsible department not to buy anything else but to prioritise ARVs, TB and malaria medication so that we have enough medication here in Zimbabwe.

He urged people living with HIV to continue taking their medication as prescribed by doctors, reassuring them that there is no need to worry about potential stockouts, as the government has taken proactive measures to ensure a steady and uninterrupted supply of antiretroviral drugs.  Said the Minister:

We understand that there were a lot of people who are panicking, some who were skipping taking their medication thinking that there would be a shortage but let me assure you that we have enough ARVs…
If there are people who are taking medication, may they continue taking that medication religiously, as prescribed by the doctors.

Data shows that funding for PEPFAR in key African nations, including Zimbabwe, has been cut by as much as 30 percent.

Zimbabwe Expands ARV Stockpile With New Three-Month Consignment

The Harare City Council has confirmed a bed bug (tsikidzi) infestation in Mbare and announced that it will take immediate action to address the issue. The local authority plans to tackle the problem with a comprehensive spraying programme in the affected areas.
In a statement issued on Sunday, April 6, Council Corporate Communications Manager Stanley Gama revealed that the City of Harare’s Pest Control Section had already assessed the situation. They are now mobilising the necessary equipment and resources to combat the infestation. He added:

The City teams will start spraying on Monday 7 April 2025 at Mbare Matererini and Matapi Flats.
Residents in the areas mentioned should prepare and cooperate with our teams starting early morning.
The teams will also be conducting awareness campaigns on factors that accelerate such infestations e.g. overcrowding and how to prevent infestations even in these overcrowded areas.
Community volunteers are going to be required for optimum spraying coverage.
It is therefore important for residents in and around Mbare Flats and other areas to be aware of the factors that lead to such infestations.

Gama urged residents to participate in controlling the spread of bed bugs, emphasizing that spraying alone will not solve the problem. 
He explained that bed bugs often hide in small crevices on beds, sofas, wardrobes, and walls, and therefore, regular physical cleaning is essential in areas where chemicals cannot reach.

Mpilo Central Hospital Clinical Director Solwayo Ngwenya said that the hospital has seen a rise in cases of toddlers seeking treatment for respiratory illnesses. He said:

Ndlovu stressed that early detection and timely treatment can significantly slow the progression of kidney disease and improve long-term health outcomes. Added Ndlovu:

Cimas Calls For Kidney Health Screenings Amid Rising Cases Of Kidney Failure

Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora has stopped the construction of the Watervlei Burial Memorial Park, which was recently approved by the Harare City Council. The park is located along Seke Road, adjacent to the Prince Edward Water Treatment Plant.
Mombeshora halted the project over concerns that decomposing human remains and chemicals could contaminate water due to the site’s proximity to the water treatment facility.
In a letter addressed to Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, Mombeshora said no consultations had been conducted with the Ministry of Health and Child Care regarding the project. He said:

What surprised me is that when I went to Sally Mugabe Hospital on Monday when they were demonstrating, most of the things they were talking about were things that they knew were being looked into.
Some of the things they complained about were syringes. We went to pharmacies and saw the syringes.
So, we now do not know whether they were demonstrating because of a lack of syringes or they were doing it for something else.
What they did was illegal because they were supposed to give us two weeks in advance before they started demonstrating.
We told them to come and talk to us in time so that things may be worked out, we want to ensure that the health of our people is safe.
