The arrest and conviction of a Bulawayo woman, Panashe Mpofu, for spanking teenagers, including her own child, for hosting a Vuzu party while they were supposed to be at school, has sparked renewed debate over corporal punishment, reported <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200036245/womans-disciplinary-act-sparks-debate">Southern Eye</a>.
Corporal punishment involves using physical force to discipline someone, typically a child, to cause pain or discomfort. This can include actions such as spanking, slapping, or hitting with an object.
The case caused public outrage after Mpofu was found guilty of physical abuse and sentenced to two years in jail.
Since November 14, she has been held at Mlondozi Prison, a section of Khami Maximum Security Prison.
However, Mpofu’s sentence was recently reviewed, and she was released by Bulawayo High Court Judge Evangelista Kabasa.
In response to the case, Raymond Majongwe, secretary-general of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), defended corporal punishment, stating that it was necessary to discipline unruly children. Said Majongwe:

This is the only way our children will be disciplined to teach them Ubuntu.
We must not do things to impress other countries by removing corporal punishment.
That is the only way we can be able to control our children.
</blockquote>
Bulawayo United Residents Association (BURA) chairperson Winos Dube said corporal punishment should be applied. Dube said:
<blockquote>
Unlike this generation, whenever corporal punishment is applied to them, they view it as abuse and this must be revisited.
</blockquote>
City of Bulawayo Ward 6 councillor Nkosinathi Hove Mpofu said:
<blockquote>
Corporal punishment is just a way of indicating love and it must be applied because an individual would be moulding the child to be a better person in future.
</blockquote>
Methodist church pastor Bhekithemba Phiri said minimum punishment is helpful. Said the Reverend:
<blockquote>
It should be brought in a minimum way to assist this new generation. A number of people from the older generation are better people today in terms of respect and discipline because they went through corporal punishment.
</blockquote>
However, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union (ARTUZ) of Zimbabwe leader Obert Masaraure, is detrimental to children’s well-being. He said:

Studies have shown that corporal punishment can increase anxiety and depression in students, which can exacerbate substance abuse issues.
</blockquote>
In 2023, a High Court judge ruled that corporal punishment was permissible if the intent to discipline is proven, and it could not be classified as assault or a criminal offence.
Justice Munamato Mutevedzi made this ruling when he cleared Yeukai Graham Mutero of charges of killing her 13-year-old son while trying to discipline him.
Section 68A of the Constitution outlaws corporal punishment in schools, based on the constitutional prohibition against any physical or psychological torture, or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.

Zimbabwe received 1,000 tonnes of rice from India, with the handover ceremony taking place in Harare on Friday, December 20.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister July Moyo was represented at the event by his deputy, Maruva Mercy Dinha.
The rice was handed over by the Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brama Kumar.
In a speech read on his behalf by Dinha, Moyo said that when the rice is distributed, priority will be given to the elderly and people with disabilities. Said Moyo:

Innocent Benza, the Mutasa Central lawmaker (ZANU PF), gifted President Emmerson Mnangagwa a Boran bull for launching a national youth programme in his district early this week.
Mnangagwa officiated at the Manicaland Youth Forum and the Africa Youth Day event at Magamba Vocational Training Centre in Mutasa District.
Washington Ziwiwi, the Mutasa District committee co-ordinator, confirmed the donation from Benza, the highest-ranking provincial official. Said Ziwiwi (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036261/zanu-pf-lawmaker-gifts-ed-with-boran-bull-present">NewsDay</a>):

Mutasa MP Benza Gifts Mnangagwa Boran Bull

Tafadzwa Muguti, the Permanent Secretary for Presidential Affairs in the Office of the President, clarified that the recent door-to-door crackdown on smuggled goods is focused on shops, not households.
He made the remarks following criticism that the government planned to send inspectors into people’s homes to search for smuggled items.
On Wednesday, Muguti said that a taskforce, made up of agencies like ZIMRA, ZRP, RBZ, and the Consumer Protection Commission, has been deployed to major border posts and key roads to prevent the entry of smuggled goods.
He also said that those caught with smuggled goods could face imprisonment without the option of bail.
While clarifying the target of the crackdown in a post on X on Friday, Muguti added that some homes used as warehouses for smuggled goods would also be targeted. He said:

Please kindly note: at no time in the video did I mention household searches. As with the current programme door to door in this regard is shop to shop, business to business.
However, we are aware some homes are being used as store warehouses for smuggled goods and we are equally dealing with them.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has retired Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General Tandabantu Godwin Matanga, effective December 31, 2024.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, on Friday, December 20.
Rushwaya also announced that Mnangagwa had appointed Deputy Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba as Matanga’s successor, with Mutamba set to assume the role of ZRP Commissioner General on January 1, 2025.
Matanga took over the position from Augustine Chihuri, who fled into exile after the November 2017 military coup. He has served during politically charged times.
Under Matanga’s leadership, numerous opposition activists and human rights defenders were arrested, often facing long periods of incarceration on charges such as convening illegal gatherings or inciting violence.
In recent years, armed robbery cases have surged, with incidents like the infamous Ecobank heist standing out. This daring robbery occurred in broad daylight on a busy street and was even captured on CCTV.
Meanwhile, in 2022, Mutamba was put under United States sanctions for his role in “undermining Zimbabwe’s democratic processes and institutions”. The US then said:

Over the past two years, Mutamba has taken actions that threaten and undermine legitimate political parties that oppose the policies of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) party. In 2020, Mutamba supported Zimbabwe security services’ use of pressure and intimidation on prominent opposition figures.
Also in 2020, Mutamba supported the uneven enforcement of a COVID-19-related curfew, encouraging security forces to limit opposition activities and did not allow for foreign national officials located in Zimbabwe to meet with Zimbabwean opposition parties or civil society groups.
In 2021, Mutamba advocated that vote tallies not be displayed outside polling locations and that international observers should not be allowed to monitor the 2023 elections.

Mnangagwa Retires ZRP Commissioner General Godwin Matanga, Mutamba To Take Over

ZANU PF Politburo member Supa Mandiwanzira has accused the opposition CCC party of deflecting blame for the contamination of Lake Chivero, which has resulted in the deaths of wildlife and domestic animals and poses a threat to millions of residents.
The polluted water has led to the deaths of fish and animals, endangering the health of millions who rely on this water source.
The CCC-dominated Harare City Council has blamed the central government for the crisis, prompting a response from ZANU PF.
In an interview with <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/lake-chivero-mess-zanu-pf-warns-council/">Business Times</a>, Mandiwanzira, who is the ZANU PF secretary for Local Government, criticized the local authority for allegedly playing political games with people’s lives to score “brownie points.” Said Mandiwanzira:
<blockquote>
We recognize there is a real crisis and at this point, it is pointless to be pointing accusatory fingers at this party and that party because, at the end of the day, we need to resolve it.
Animals are dying, the people are affected and it is the responsibility of ZANU PF and the ZANU PF government to make sure that all Zimbabweans including the animals have safe drinking water.
We all know that the challenges are as a result of the incompetence of those who are running the city of Harare who are mainly the opposition but at this point, we are a party in government which is responsible for addressing all issues including that mess.

Mandiwanzira also urged Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume to stop blaming illegal settlements for the lake’s contamination, saying the local authority must prevent such settlements from emerging. He said:

The government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the government of ZANU PF has been very clear it is opposed to land barons, it is opposed to developments that are taking place without authority. 
Ultimately the government does not go down to run the city of Harare or any other city, it is the responsibility of those given the mandate by the people of Harare to make sure these developments do not take place.
In most cases, we have found these illegal developments have plans approved by the same local authority so we believe this idea of pointing fingers at the government must stop.

ZANU PF Warns Harare City Council Over Lake Chivero Pollution

The Health Law Policy (HLPC) and the Institute for Young Women’s Development (IYWD) are pushing for the amendment of the Termination of Pregnancy Act to create a safe abortion environment for women and girls.
The Act, also known as Chapter 15:10, specifies certain circumstances under which a pregnancy may be terminated, such as in cases of rape, incest, or when the pregnancy poses a risk to the mother’s health.
However, the two organisations feel that the circumstances under which abortion is permitted are not broad enough to allow safe abortions.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/civil-societies-lobby-for-safe-abortions/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> on the sidelines of a media sensitisation training held over the weekend, HLPC programmes coordinator Dorcas Chitiyo said:
<blockquote>
The issue that we are grappling with is that there are many barriers that women face, that are in existence, that are prohibiting access to safe abortions.
We start with our legal framework, which is the Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1977.
It creates challenges for women because it has very restricted grounds on which abortion is legal…maybe a woman is a survivor of a sexually violent offence or rape resulting in pregnancy, a crime of incest or in the event that it has been recommended by a doctor that the pregnancy continuation is not safe for the child as well as the quality of life for the child is anticipated to be so poor that termination is recommended by a medical practitioner.
Now given that this act is from 1977, there have been many medical advances and much research and a lot of work done to ensure that abortions are accessed safely through medical procedures and medically without the need to always resort to surgical processes.
</blockquote>
Chitiyo said that women face several challenges due to restrictive abortion laws in Zimbabwe, arguing that limited legal options lead to unsafe, clandestine procedures, risking women’s health and lives.
Current laws criminalise both those seeking and assisting with abortions, leading to stigma and danger.
The HLPC and ITYD, supported by the Safe Abortion Action Fund, have prepared a position paper arguing for immediate reform to improve access to safe, legal abortions in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Civil Society Groups Call For Broader Abortion Rights

The Mbvelelo mopani worm processing plant in Matshiloni, Beitbridge District, Matabeleland South, has been idle since 2023 due to a scarcity of mopane worms.
The scarcity of mopane worms has been linked to prolonged droughts, which stress mopane trees and reduce their leaf production. With less food available, the population of mopane worms dwindles.
Established in September 2019, the plant became a vital lifeline for the local community, providing employment for over 12 people and supporting 18 members of the Rovhona Raita Co-operative.
In an interview with the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/drought-halts-operations-at-mopane-worm-processing-plant/">Chronicle</a>, Mbvelelo (Pvt) Ltd board member Fadzai Muvhango said there is a need for the plant to be revived as many families were dependent on it. Said Muvhango:

When this project came, it transformed our lives. We could support our families and send our children to school. Many of us, especially widows, found a solution to our problems through this initiative.
Now, with mopane worms in short supply, we are left desperate. The machinery and plant are there, and it would bring us great relief to see them functional again.

Matabeleland South provincial development coordinator in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Merjury Sikundla, said there is a need to diversify the plant’s operations to keep it operational. She said:

When this plant was established, it was meant to empower women and youth, benefiting the entire community. The scarcity of amacimbi has disrupted operations for two consecutive seasons.
We cannot let this facility go to waste. Plans are underway to introduce alternative products like dried vegetables, matemba, and beans to ensure the plant serves its purpose.

The Mbvelelo plant is equipped with modern machinery sourced from China, including a washing machine, dryer, bleaching, and packaging machines.

The plant helped many people by giving them jobs and supporting their families. Now that the worms are scarce, people are struggling. They want to start the plant again and maybe make other products like dried vegetables. The plant has modern machines to help with processing.Officials are working on a plan to save the plant and help the community.

Mbvelelo Processing Plant Shuts Down Due To Mopane Worm Shortage

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck 26 km southeast of Kariba on Friday, December 20, at 2:15 AM Central Africa Time (CAT).
According to <a href="https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/quake-info/10039660/mag4quake-Dec-20-2024-Zimbabwe.html">Volcano Discovery</a>, the earthquake occurred 10 km below the surface, causing moderate shaking near the epicentre. Reads the report in part:
<blockquote>
The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Kariba, a town with 28,000 inhabitants in Zimbabwe, in 26 km (16 mi) distance northwest of the epicenter. People likely experienced light shaking there.
In the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare, 256 km (159 mi) away from the epicenter, the earthquake was probably felt as very weak shaking.

The epicentre of an earthquake is the point on the Earth’s surface that is directly above the focus, where the earthquake originates.
It’s essentially the spot on the ground that experiences the most intense shaking and often the greatest damage during an earthquake.
Earth tremors are common in Kariba primarily due to reservoir-induced seismicity. This phenomenon occurs because of the immense weight of the water in the Kariba Dam.
When the dam was filled in the 1960s, it began to induce seismic activity in the region. The water load causes stress on the Earth’s crust, leading to frequent tremors.
These tremors are generally of low to moderate magnitude and have not been known to affect the dam’s structural integrity.

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit near Kariba, Zimbabwe, causing moderate shaking. The closest town, Kariba, likely felt light shaking, while the capital Harare felt weak shaking. Earthquakes are common in Kariba due to the weight of the water in the dam. This weight stresses the Earth's crust, leading to tremors. These tremors are usually low to moderate and don't harm the dam. Kariba Dam filled in the 1960s, causing seismic activity in the area. The epicenter of an earthquake is the spot above where it starts.

Earthquake Near Kariba Causes Moderate Shaking

For the second consecutive month, the government has failed to pay its employees, including teachers, their salaries on time.
Some civil servants who were expecting their payments this week have yet to receive their salaries.
In November, delays in salary disbursements were already evident, with some teachers and other government workers receiving late payments in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), and bonuses were also delayed.
On Wednesday, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) said the delayed salaries are insufficient to cover the needs of civil servants. ARTUZ said:

For the second month in a row, the Zimbabwean government has failed to pay civil servants’ salaries on time. Civil servants are already earning paltry salaries and are battling to make ends meet.
The festive season was struck off the calendar of government workers way back. Unfortunately, the late payment of salaries adds a new layer of pain to the exploited government employees.
Failing to meet the basics for survival when others are swimming in plenty is torturous.
</blockquote>
The union alleged that while teachers continue to struggle in poverty, top bureaucrats are reaping the rewards of their manipulative actions, enjoying lavish lifestyles in exotic locations. It said:
<blockquote>
Senior government officials have since received their big perks in United States dollars. The majority of these elites are now on holiday with their families claiming to be resting from a busy year.
Indeed it was a busy year for them. Looting from the impoverished is not an easy job. Working round the clock to silence the oppressed and disenfranchised majority is not an easy task.
But as they rest they should be assured that the underpaid civil servants will not be silenced forever.
</blockquote>
ARTUZ, which is demanding at least US$1 260 per month for the lowest-paid teacher, vowed to push for better working conditions in 2025. The union said:
<blockquote>
We are not in the habit of making empty threats. The anger from the civil servants is reaching the boiling point.
2025 will be a difficult year for those who steal from the poor. We will organize and demand fair wages paid on time.

Salary Delays Hit Civil Servants Again

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) has temporarily banned fishing at Lake Chivero following the death of fish, wildlife and domestic animals, which is believed to be caused by water contamination.
ZIMPARKS spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed that the fishing ban, which took effect on December 16, is a precautionary measure.
It will allow relevant government departments, along with the Research and Scientific Services team, to conduct investigations and assess whether consuming the fish poses any risks to human health. Said Farawo:
<blockquote>
All fishing activities in Lake Chivero have been suspended with immediate effect following the deaths of fish due to the contamination of water.
The suspension serves as a precautionary measure and will pave way for relevant Government departments and our Research and Scientific Services team to investigate more and determine whether the consumption of the fish poses risk to humans.
During this time, we are increasing anti-poaching patrols and law enforcement in areas around the lake to prevent any fish from reaching the market.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Richard Tsvangirai, the Member of Parliament for Norton (CCC), under whose constituency Lake Chivero falls, has urged the relevant authorities to expedite their investigations to safeguard both lives and livelihoods. Said Tsvangirai:
<blockquote>
The suspension of fishing at Lake Chivero is a serious blow to the livelihoods of many fishermen in Norton Constituency, the majority of whom are youth.
I urge the Government to fast-track investigations and provide immediate support for affected families. Let’s act swiftly to protect both lives and livelihoods.
</blockquote>
Chivero serves as the main water source for Harare residents, and concerns over its contamination have intensified in recent days.
This follows ZIMPARKS’ confirmation of the death of four rhinos, along with other wildlife, livestock, and birds, which perished after drinking from the lake.

Two people were killed and one person injured in a tragic accident involving an Irizar Mtethi bus and a Toyota Fortuner.
The collision occurred just after midnight at the 227-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road in Makhado.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the accident was triggered when the bus struck a donkey, causing it to swerve into oncoming traffic and collide head-on with the Toyota Fortuner.
At the time of the incident, the bus had two passengers on board, while the Toyota Fortuner was carrying one passenger. The ZRP said:

Pressure from Members of Parliament has led Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, to announce increases in funding for lawmakers, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/ncube-raises-parliaments-budget-and-doubles-cdf-to-us100k/">reported ZimLive</a>.
In response to their demands, Ncube has doubled the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation and pledged to purchase more vehicles for MPs.
Originally, Ncube allocated ZiG1.7 billion for Parliament in his budget statement presented on November 28. However, following parliamentary pressure, he raised this amount by an additional ZiG1 billion.
During the debate on his 2025 budget on Wednesday, Ncube explained that financing the added costs required tapping into “back pocket funds.”
Some of the specific requests from MPs included more vehicles for parliamentary committee chairpersons, allowances for staff, residential stands for lawmakers, the clearance of CDF arrears, as well as increased sitting, fuel, and foreign allowances.
To meet these demands, Ncube allocated approximately US$120 million for staff salaries, ZiG250 million for additional cars for MPs, ZiG378 million for clearing CDF arrears, ZiG72 million for MPs’ fuel allowances, ZiG50 million for domestic and foreign allowances, and another ZiG50 million for lawmakers’ offices and tools of trade.
Additionally, Ncube doubled the CDF allocation to US$100,000 per constituency for the country’s 210 constituencies and set aside funds to purchase buses for transporting parliamentary staff. He said:

What we did not do is in a sense we can see that it is an area of pressure and we need some back pocket to approve what they were proposing but to make provision for it because within our budget to cater for additional motor vehicles.
Now let me go back and say that for the CDF and clearance of tools of trade and office equipment for staff and MPs, I am proposing an additional ZiG72 million.
To support additional motor vehicle requirements which is a tool of trade, I am proposing an additional ZiG50 million.
For MPs’ fuel requirements, I am proposing an additional budget of ZiG378 million.
I am proposing a back pocket for parliament of ZiG200 million and an additional ZiG50 million for the constituency offices and other tools of the trade ZiG250 million.
For domestic and foreign allowances, I am proposing ZiG 50 million.

Chitungwiza Municipality Sets Up Emergency Shelters For Flood-Prone Communities

Addressing journalists in Harare on Wednesday, Tafadzwa Muguti, the Permanent Secretary for Presidential Affairs in the Office of the President, announced that a taskforce has been deployed to all major border posts and key roads to prevent the entry of smuggled goods.
The taskforce comprises various government agencies, including the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), and the Consumer Protection Commission. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued a stern warning to cabinet ministers who habitually skip his weekly cabinet meetings, delegating their deputies to attend in their place.
While chairing his final cabinet meeting of 2024 at State House on Tuesday, December 17, Mnangagwa emphasized that such delegations would not be tolerated in the coming year. He said:

The worrisome tendency by ministers to absent themselves from meetings is untenable.
In some cases, junior officials are delegated to attend and merely bench-warm meetings.

Permanent Secretaries should ensure that in their absence, only directors and above should attend Working Party Meetings.

Mnangagwa also announced that starting next year, deputy ministers will be required to sign performance contracts, similar to those of substantive ministers.

The latest blackout was linked to failures in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure, which ZESCO (Zambia’s power utility) uses to import power from Eskom and Electricidade de Moçambique.

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 16/12/24 at around 1350 hours at the 156 kilometre peg along Harare-Nyamapanda Road.
Two people were killed while four others were injured when a Toyota Hilux vehicle with one passenger on board side swiped with a Honda Fit vehicle carrying five passengers.
As a result of the accident, the Toyota Hilux vehicle overturned and landed on its side while the Honda Fit vehicle overturned and landed on its wheels.

Two Dead, Four Injured In Harare-Nyamapanda Road Accident

The City of Harare said that reports of contamination at Lake Chivero are exaggerated, despite confirmation from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) that several animals, including four rhinos, three zebras, four wildebeests, four fish eagles, as well as multiple goats and cattle, have died after drinking water from the lake.
In a statement issued on Monday, the City of Harare said a stakeholder meeting had been convened, bringing together council experts and representatives from other government agencies to address the reports of animal deaths linked to alleged contamination.
The council also said that further investigations will be conducted, and a joint statement from the City of Harare and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) will be issued in due course. Said the City of Harare:

Teams are already on the ground to take samples on the particular part of the lake the rhinos drink from. Animals are territorial and it appears they drink from the same place.
Residents are urged to ignore exaggerated social media and media reports that the whole lake has been contaminated.

Earlier, Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said that the deaths were caused by contamination from cyanobacteria in the lake’s water.

Harare City Council Claims Lake Chivero Is Not Contaminated

President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly gifted 10 Ankole cattle to Botswana’s President, Duma Boko, during a SADC meeting. This gesture was intended to congratulate Boko on his historic general election victory.
However, according to Tuesday Grill, Boko has not transported the cattle to Botswana, as he is not a farmer.
Commenting on the report, Zimbabwean opposition leader Job Sikhala, who attended Boko’s inauguration along with several regional opposition leaders, suggested that the new Botswana president would likely refuse such a “dirty gift from a dirty regime” if it were offered to him. Sikhala posted on X:

I have… come across some raging and fuming anger over this alleged dirty gift to President Duma Boko. The anger by many Zimbabweans who are living under poverty and squalor and repression is justified because to the majority of our people, change in Botswana was seen as the progressive signs of democracy in motion.
Some of us stood with the opposition because we wanted the will of the people of Botswana to prevail which eventually happened.
People of Zimbabwe must know that ZANU PF was openly supporting their losing horse Masisi of BDP and the coming into power of the opposition miffed them.
To spin their embarrassment they are doing everything possible to soil and destroy the public image and trust of the new government in Botswana by going there and start throwing such gifts as announced in the story by the Tuesday Grill to tarnish the image of the new sheriff in Botswana.
The story does not tell us whether President Duma Boko has accepted such a dirty gift from a dirty regime which I know for a fact he has not.
It is some of these narratives we are being sold to equate the new government in Botswana as no different from any other regimes in Africa like the disappointment people had in Malawi’s Chakwera after he flew to London to attend an online meeting for some fast Internet and WiFi connection.
We must look at every act the ZANU PF regime do to the new government in Botswana with an open and critical eye.
This is an attempt to birsmirch the new government as one of those African governments that has only brought the change of faces but not the behaviour and conduct we have been witnessing for years in Africa!!!

Mnangagwa Gifts 10 Ankole Cattle To Botswana's President | Report

The late Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko’s son, Siqokoqela, did not attend his father’s burial at their Douglasdale plot in Bulawayo on Sunday.
According to The NewsHawks, Siqokoqela’s absence has been linked to a series of controversies, including a family feud over his parentage, business disputes, and a major fallout which led to his arrest last year on allegations of raping his niece, charges on which he was later acquitted.
Siqokoqela has publicly stated that his father and his family—wife Laurinda and two sisters, Sikhumbuzo and Siduduzo—were behind the false charges and his arrest.
In 2018, Siqokoqela and his wife Nomagugu were also arrested for allegedly ordering 15 Choppies Supermarket managers in Bulawayo to unlawfully dispense over US$30,000 cash from their point of sale machines after threatening them with either deportation or dismissal. These charges were also dropped.
Due to these and other contentious issues, Mphoko and his son had irreconcilable differences, leading to a breakdown in their relationship.

The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has urged the Police and municipalities to take action against touts (mahwindi) who intimidate, harass, and assault passengers at bus terminuses and ranks across the country.
These unruly elements are particularly prevalent at locations such as Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus, Mbare Musika, Mutare Rank, Mutoko Rank, and the Harare Exhibition Park (Showgrounds).
PAZ National Coordinator Tafadzwa Goliati has called on the Police to increase their presence at these hotspots and crack down on unlicensed operators and rogue elements. Said Goliati:

This behaviour is unacceptable. Passengers are being bullied, manhandled, and subjected to verbal abuse by touts operating with impunity.
It is time for decisive action to protect travellers. The safety and dignity of passengers must be prioritised.
We demand the immediate arrest of these touts who are tarnishing the public transport sector. We also urge the police to work closely with municipalities to create a safer environment for passengers. Enough is enough.

On Saturday, scores of passengers were harassed at Roadport in Harare, with some being forced off a Mutare-bound bus by touts.

The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe is angry at touts who are bothering and hurting passengers at bus stops. They want the Police to stop these touts from scaring people at places like Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus and others. The Association says that passengers are being mistreated and need protection. They want the touts to be arrested and for the Police to work with the local governments to make bus stops safer. Recently, passengers were harassed at Roadport in Harare and they want it to stop. The Association is demanding action to make sure passengers are safe and respected.

Passengers Association Calls For Crackdown On "Mahwindi"

Hwange residents have petitioned the Parliament of Zimbabwe to address air pollution in the town, which is linked to coal mining activities.
The petition, presented by the Greater Hwange Residents Trust, aims to raise awareness among lawmakers about the health risks associated with coal dust pollution and to urge immediate action to protect residents from its harmful effects.
According to the trust, the Pneumonoconiosis Act (Chapter 15:08), designed to safeguard workers in dusty occupations, fails to adequately protect ordinary residents who are also affected by coal dust pollution.
Below is the full petition that was submitted to Parliament:

DRAW the attention of the House to the following:
1. The Constitution mandates the Parliament of Zimbabwe to make laws, carry out executive oversight and discharge a representative role, as well as protect the Constitution and democratic governance in Zimbabwe.
2. Section 117(2) of the Constitution, inter alia, mandates Parliament to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of Zimbabwe.
3. Section 8 of the Constitution sets out the objectives to guide all institutions and agencies of the State in the formulation and implementation of policies that will lead to the establishment, enhancement and promotion of a sustainable, just, free and democratic society in which people enjoy prosperous, happy and fulfilling lives.
4. Greater Whange Residents Trust is a Hwange-basedTrust which advocates for the welfare and interests of people in Hwange.
5. The town of Hwange is home to over 50 000 residents. These include men, women and children that are not employed as miners. 
6. Coal mining is a key industry in that town and impacts on both the residents and the environment of Hwange town and beyond. Hwange is also surrounded by land which falls under the National Parks.
7. The Pneumonoconiosis Act (Chapter 15:08) came into operation on 1 August 1971. The Act remains in force. The long title of the Act gives as its objects the following: An Act to provide for the control and administration of persons employed in dusty occupations; and to provide for matters incidental to or connected with the foregoing. (emphasis added).
8. The Act was designed to respond to health issues affecting those employed in dusty occupations. Naturally,it is ill-equipped to respond to issues of stakeholders beyond this categorisation as stated by the lawmaker.
9. Mining in Hwange consists of both open cast and underground mining operations. Coal mining creates dust and dusty conditions that affect not just those employed by the coal mines. It affects communities that live on and around the mines.
10. Section 56 of the Constitution provides that all persons are equal before the law and have a right to equal protection and benefit of the law.
11. Your petitioners submit that ordinary residents of Hwange that are not employed in the coal mines are not benefiting from the provisions of the Act as currently framed. For instance, those directly employed in coal mines are eligible for regular medical checks under the Act to determine the impact of coal dust on their health, particularly the heart and kidneys. Ordinary residents are not beneficiaries of such tests. The Act was not designed for their benefit. It was exclusionary from the start.
12. Residents that are not employees of coal mines are therefore susceptible to health risks associated with coal mining, without the protection of the law. With the increase in coal and related mining activities, the number of persons that are not subject to the protection of the law thanks to the crafting of the Act has also increased. It is desirable that the Act be reviewed to embrace the protection of all persons that stay or live in environments that are subjected to coal mining dust. It may also be worthwhile for Parliament to consider how the Act could enjoin coal miners to contribute towards the reduction of coal dust, to enhance the health of residents.
13. Your petitioners are aware that section 73 of the Constitution guarantees their right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being, and to have their environment protected for the benefit of present and future generations. In this regard, the State must ensure the progressive realisation of this right by residents of Hwange.
WHEREFORE your petitioners humbly pray as follows:
That the Parliament of Zimbabwe to exercises its constitutional mandate to:
1. Inquire into the nature and extent of the threat posed to residents due to the dust pollution;
2. Review the fairness of the Pneumonoconiosis Act [Chapter 15:08] to non-employees of the coal mining industry that reside in coal mining areas; and
3. Make recommendations on the review of the Act given the current situation in coal mining areas.

Residents of Hwange are worried about pollution from coal mining and want Parliament to do something. They say the current laws only protect workers in the mines, not ordinary people who also suffer. The residents want Parliament to act now to make sure they and future generations are safe from harmful pollution in Hwange.

Hwange Residents Petition Parliament To Tackle Coal Dust Pollution

Former Zimbabwean Vice President Phelekezela Report Mphoko was buried at his Douglasdale home plot in Bulawayo on Sunday, reported The NewsHawks.
Mphoko, a former senior ZIPRA commander during the Liberation Struggle, died on December 6, 2024, in India, where he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Mphoko’s casket, draped in the national flag, was displayed as family, friends, relatives, and dignitaries gathered to pay their last respects.
Among the notable officials were Judith Ncube, Minister of State for Bulawayo Province; Richard Moyo, Minister of State for Matabeleland North Province; and Sithembiso Nyoni, Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, among others.
Although Mphoko was declared a national hero by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and ZANU PF and was supposed to be buried at Heroes Acre in Harare, his family said he expressed a wish to be buried at his home.
Recently, another late former ZIPRA commander, Tshinga Dube, had a similar wish, although the government overrode it and buried him at Heroes Acre in Harare. Dube had wanted to be buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo.
Similarly, the late former ZIPRA intelligence supremo Dumiso Dabengwa was buried at his rural home area of EManxeleni in Ntabazinduna, outside Bulawayo.
Dabengwa had told his family that he did not want any government officials at his funeral, and thus Mnangagwa and others did not attend.
Several other former nationalists, including ex-ZAPU stalwart Cephas Msipa, also chose not to be buried at Heroes Acre.
Former ZAPU political heavyweight Welshman Mabhena, before he died, openly said he did not want to be buried next to “corrupt people”, “thieves” and “murderers” at Heroes Acre.
Even the late former president Robert Mugabe, who was ousted in a coup in November 2017, is buried at his rural Zvimba home in Mashonaland West province, as he had instructed his family that he didn’t want to be buried at Heroes Acre.

Former Vice President Mphoko was buried in Bulawayo at his home. He was a hero from the Liberation Struggle. Although the government wanted to bury him at Heroes Acre, his family honored his wish. Other heroes like Dube and Dabengwa also wanted to be buried at their homes. Different leaders have chosen not to be buried at Heroes Acre. Even Mugabe is buried at his home, not there. Family and government have different ideas about where heroes should be buried.

Mphoko Buried At Family Plot In Bulawayo

The death of Hillary Nleya, a military intelligence officer, has raised questions of foul play following his mysterious disappearance last month.
As reported by <a href="https://cite.org.zw/senator-tells-parliament-military-officer-found-hanging-was-murdered/">CITE</a>, Nleya was last seen at Redwood along the Plumtree-Bulawayo road, and his body was later discovered hanging from a tree in Figtree, Matabeleland South Province.
While his death was initially classified as a suicide, the narrative changed when Nleya’s military connections were revealed, raising suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his demise.
During a parliamentary debate on the Death Penalty Abolition Bill last week, Senator Lwazi Sibanda, a cousin of the late Nleya, suggested that he may have been murdered. She said:

I rise with a heavy heart. I am a woman, a mother, and a Senator of this country, yet I stand here with a cousin lying in the mortuary—Hilary Nleya—whom we searched for over two weeks, only to find him dead in Figtree. He was murdered by a person we do not yet know.

Sibanda said that while she supports the Bill, the issue is complex, as some individuals convicted of murder do not exhibit any remorse. She said:
<blockquote>
I am a law-abiding citizen of this country. I am grateful that we have a President who was spared from the death penalty.
I am a citizen who respects the law, and I am committed to the abolition of the death penalty.
We remember Geneva Sibanda, who was murdered by his gardener and wife. We remember many of our friends, colleagues—even among us—who have been murdered by people roaming the streets.
Some are known, some are unknown; some are in prison and brag about killing those they have killed.
It is painful in our hearts to say that sentencing these people to death does not serve our country.
Killing them like animals does not matter to us.
People will die. People will be killed by those we show remorse to, who don’t even show any remorse to us.”
It is so painful that I stand here defending people who will go out and kill their grandparents, or their mothers, simply because there was no food to cook for dinner. They will kill them just because their mother failed to provide food for them.
It is painful to spare a murderer who shows no remorse, like someone who kills a helpless young woman walking home after work just to steal her bag.
When they realise they’ve been seen, they kill her to prevent identification. They don’t care about tomorrow—they put a knife in her heart to save themselves.
There is so much pain caused by these murderers that we are still defending as a country.
We will keep them in prison for years, just to protect them from death, while they show no care for this nation.
I have so much more to say about the abolition of the death penalty.

The Bill was subsequently passed by the Senate and is now awaiting President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s assent to become law.
