Former Chegutu West MP Dexter Nduna (ZANU PF) graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) on Friday amid controversial circumstances, as reports indicate he failed several modules.
Nduna, who serves as the chairperson for resource mobilisation and revenue generation within ZANU PF’s central committee, has claimed that he faced political bias and targeting due to his party affiliation. He requested a remarking of all failed modules.
The controversy was ignited by a social media user named Cde Andrew Maimba, who suggested in a post that Nduna had failed and did not actually graduate. Wrote Maimba:

Nduna, however, told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/former-mp-dexter-nduna-graduates-with-law-degree-from-uz-amid-controversy/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> that he graduated from the UZ and shared a receipt for the graduation gown he purchased exclusively from the institution after confirming his place on the list of graduating students.
He even took to social media to congratulate himself on his achievement.
Under UZ’s academic regulations, students who fail some subjects are expected to either sit for supplementary exams or apply to repeat the failed modules.
Nduna is no stranger to controversy, having served as the MP for Chegutu West despite losing the 2018 election to MDC Alliance’s Gift Konjana.
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who officiated over the graduation ceremony, capped 6,778 graduates across various disciplines, including 16 Doctor of Philosophy, 11 Masters in Philosophy, and 5,319 undergraduate degrees. 1,432 graduates completed various postgraduate programmes.
UZ has faced numerous scandals in recent years, including the issuance of fake PhD degrees, allegations of political interference, nepotism, and corruption.

Last term, several institutions suffered significant financial losses after being targeted by robbers during school fee collection from parents and guardians.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/top-stories/schools-warned-against-keeping-large-sums-of-money-at-premises/">ZBC News</a>, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Deputy Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Blessmore Chishaka emphasised the importance of schools taking proactive measures to avoid becoming targets for criminals. He said:

Our call to the schools and school authorities is that they should actually adhere to the government system, which requires that they deposit school fees using the banking system. The hoarding of cash at schools is not advisable Why? Because schools become targets of criminals.
We also even advise parents that as they pay their school fees, they should use the banking system rather than carry large sums of cash to schools. This attracts criminals would then target them and rob them of their money.

Last term, a school in Warren Park, Harare, was robbed in broad daylight where an armed gang posed as parents intending to pay school fees.
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Director of Communications and Advocacy, Taungana Ndoro, said:

This imperative step will substantially reduce the risk of armed robberies, ensure a secure educational environment, and support the local economy.

Lytton Primary School in Harare, Tafadzwa Primary School in Chitungwiza, Widdicombe Primary School in Hatfield, Ngezi Salvation Army Secondary School in Kadoma, Glen Norah 2 High School, and George Stark High School in Mbare all suffered significant financial losses due to armed robberies last term.
In an unrelated development, Assistant Commissioner Chishaka said police are closing in on a suspected armed gang responsible for a robbery at the Fawcett Security Company premises in Chipinge. On Wednesday morning, the gang stole over US$110,000 and more than ZAR 2,000,000.

Police Advise Schools To Handle Fees Through Banks To Avoid Robberies

In 2023, more than 4,500 learners in Zimbabwe dropped out of school due to pregnancy, including at least 150 in primary school.
These alarming statistics were disclosed by Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Edgar Moyo during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, in response to questions from lawmakers.
In reply to Mashonaland West Proportional Representative MP Mutsa Murombedzi, who inquired about the government’s initiatives to address school dropouts, Minister Moyo said:

The ministry collects and collates such data on an annual basis and it is recorded in our Education Management Information System report shared with all stakeholders.
Therefore, for the year ending December 2023, 4 557 girls dropped out of school due to pregnancy, the majority of these (3 942) being from rural schools.
134 girls dropped out of primary school as a result of pregnancy, meaning that the majority of dropouts were recorded in secondary schools.

Minister Moyo said the Ministry has introduced several measures such as career guidance and counselling to arrest the scourge of school dropouts, especially among pregnant girls. He said:

Through the Education Act, the ministry has also ensured that legal provisions are there to enable girls who fall pregnant to continue with their education.

The Minister also said several measures have been instituted to protect girls from stigma when they return to school after giving birth. He said:

On the issue of stigma, we have done a lot of awareness campaigns and also, we have done a lot of dissemination of information in encouraging all the girls who fall pregnant.
It is now their right to education, so they are supposed to go back to school. I do not think we have any challenges for students who have not been — perhaps (they) have received a lot of criticism from their peers for going back to school. So, precisely, quite a number of students have been accepted back and have gone back to school.

Minister Moyo said according to the Education Amendment Act of 2020, girls should not drop out of school for the reason that they are pregnant. He said:

After giving a normal birth, the girl is allowed back to school and that is according to the Constitution. So, we encourage those technical and vocational skills to be equipped for all students regardless of whether one has dropped out or not.
We carry out some fairs with our partners, where we see that provinces encourage girls who might have dropped out to go back to school.

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has called for the arrest of the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, for “abusing teachers.”
This follows the legal proceedings against a school head and deputy at an unnamed school in Chiredzi, who were charged with fraudulently including their own children on the list of beneficiaries for the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM).
BEAM is a national school assistance program established by the Government of Zimbabwe in 2001 to support orphans and vulnerable children.
While the program is primarily funded by the government, it also receives contributions from the donor community.
In its statement, issued this Wednesday, 04 September, ARTUZ argued that the two school administrators, along with all teachers, are vulnerable and deserving of BEAM assistance, just like any impoverished parent in Zimbabwe.
The union contended that instead of targeting teachers who seek support from BEAM, law enforcement should hold Ncube accountable for “abusing teachers” by providing them with inadequate salaries. ARTUZ said:

We condemn the arrest and conviction of a school Head and Deputy charged with abusing BEAM funds. The two teachers included their own children on the list of BEAM beneficiaries.
The BEAM scheme is meant for vulnerable children. Sons and daughters of Teachers are indeed vulnerable. Teachers earn USD 300 but the basket of needs is above USD 1200. Government promises of paying school fees for teachers’ children have not met the cost of education in schools.
Mthuli Ncube is the one who should be arrested for abusing teachers. Teachers’ children are among the most vulnerable and should benefit from BEAM or any scheme of State-funded education.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the headmaster and deputy head of a secondary school in Chiredzi District were recently arraigned before the Triangle Magistrates’ Court facing criminal abuse of duty charges.
The case emerged after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) received an anonymous tip alleging that the two had improperly included their children in the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) programme. BEAM is intended to assist underprivileged students.
However, the school head and his deputy bypassed established procedures to benefit their own children.

A thorough investigation revealed that each individual had unlawfully received US$120 for the year 2022 through this scheme. As a result, they were arrested and brought to trial.
Upon conviction, the court sentenced both defendants to 20 months in prison. However, 6 months of the sentence were suspended for 5 years, contingent on their good behaviour.
Additionally, 2 months were suspended on the condition that they pay restitution to the Social Services Department.
The remaining 12 months of their sentence were also suspended, provided they completed 420 hours of community service.

The teachers' union in Zimbabwe wants the Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube, to be arrested for mistreating teachers. Two school leaders were accused of including their own children in a program meant for poor kids. The union thinks all teachers, including their kids, deserve support. They say Ncube mistreats teachers by not paying them enough. The headmaster and deputy accused of fraud were sentenced to prison but some of it was suspended. They have to pay back the money and do community service. The union thinks Ncube should be held accountable for the teachers' situation.

Arrest Mthuli Ncube For Abusing Teachers - ARTUZ

The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare has declined to comment on the teachers’ demands for improved salaries and working conditions, following educators’ declaration of incapacity to travel to their workstations when schools reopen on Tuesday.
The new school term is set to begin on September 10 and will run until December 5.
In March 2024, the government increased teachers’ salaries from US$300 to US$320 (gross), with an additional local currency component.
However, teachers say the increment is inadequate due to significant deductions that diminish the actual take-home pay.
Teachers’ unions are now advocating for a more substantial raise, proposing a minimum salary of US$840 for the lowest-paid educators, a significant increase from the US$540 they were earning before October 2018.
When approached for comment by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200031838/govt-tight-lipped-over-teachers-salary-demands">NewsDay</a>, Simon Masanga, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, said he was unable to discuss the issue with the media. Said Masanga:

These matters are discussed at the proper forum, that is, the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) and we don’t discuss and negotiate conditions of service with the media.
However, in the past, teachers’ unions have accused the government of vacillating on calling NJNC meetings to discuss their welfare concerns.

Taungana Ndoro, spokesperson for the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, told NewsDay that they are working diligently to ensure the smooth reopening of schools without any disruptions. He said:

We are addressing the challenges faced by the Basic Education Assistance Module [BEAM] programme to enhance support for vulnerable pupils. Ongoing assessments are in place to identify and resolve any issues related to funding and resource allocation.
The home-grown school feeding programme is being prioritised by the government to provide nutritious meals to pupils, at least one hot meal a day.

Public Service Ministry Fends Off Debate On Civil Servants' Salaries

Zimbabwean teachers have announced that they will not be able to report for duty next week when schools officially open for the third term.
Schools are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday for this year’s final term, during which Grade 7, Form 4, and Form 6 students will sit for public examinations.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200031809/teachers-declare-incapacitation-ahead-of-schools-opening">NewsDay</a>, Tapedza Zhou, secretary-general of the Educators Union of Zimbabwe (EUZ), said that the ongoing economic challenges are adversely impacting the quality of education in public schools. Said Zhou:

As EUZ, we know that teachers cannot report for duty as they are incapacitated and this is a sad reality. We call upon the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to resolve salary issues with teachers because their impoverishment is taking a huge toll on the quality of education for all of our children.

A recent survey conducted by the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) revealed that parents, guardians, learners, and teachers are unprepared for the reopening of schools.
The ARTUZ study found that approximately 70% of the teachers interviewed reported being severely incapacitated due to inadequate pay.
Munyaradzi Majoni, secretary-general of the Zimbabwe National Union of School Heads, acknowledged the government’s commendable initiative to introduce a pupil feeding programme in some schools but said teachers’ remuneration must not be overlooked. Said Majoni:

The employer is loudly quiet about our remunerations. While giving grain is commendable, the government cannot ignore the human resource aspect.
We may not be held unreasonable if we declare incapacitation. Sadly, from past experience, our employer waits for us to first declare incapacitation so that they act.

Teachers Declare Incapacitation Ahead Of Third Term

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has vehemently criticised the government for allegedly misappropriating taxpayers’ money through fraudulent infrastructure development projects.
This condemnation follows comments from Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona, who was quoted as saying that over US$1.7 billion was allocated for road rehabilitation projects ahead of the recently concluded Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit in Harare.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 1, 2024, ARTUZ asserted that the staggering US$1.7 billion figure exposes an ongoing scheme of looting disguised as infrastructure development.
The union said that funds siphoned off through these fictitious projects should instead be directed toward providing civil servants with a living wage and addressing other critical sectors in need of financial support. Below is the statement:

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ has learnt with shock and anger that the government claims to have spent USD 1.7 billion on refurbishing roads ahead of the Southern African Development Community, SADC conference summit held from 16 to 18 August in Harare.
The figure exposes an ongoing looting scheme disguised in the name of infrastructure development. The work that was done and the astronomical figure announced by Mhona do not tally.
The Union calls for the immediate halting of any infrastructure development project. The Auditor General’s office should engage in an audit of the projects before they are allowed to resume.
The Union further calls upon the relevant Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee to summon Minister Mhona to investigate how the USD 1.7 billion was spent.
The Union will not hesitate to declare ongoing infrastructure projects as robbery scenes where Citizen arrests may be effected.
The money being looted through these fake projects should be deployed to paying hard-working Civil Servants a living wage among other Critical sectors in need of funding.
ARTUZ condemns the overfunding of projects in Harare at the expense of other regions. Devolution of governance should become a reality as a matter of urgency. Harare is not Zimbabwe.
The Union will declare job actions ahead of school opening. It is apparent that government has capacity to pay a living wage.

Ministry Of Education Unveils 2025 School Calendar

The Methodist Church in Zimbabwe (MCZ) has said it is unperturbed by accusations that it is protecting a teacher at Waddilove High School in Marondera who is accused of indecent assault.
An anonymously written letter, signed by “A Concerned Parent,” alleged that the school is shielding English Literature teacher Patrick Nyahwo.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200031025/were-unfazed-by-social-media-rumours-mcz">NewsDay</a>, Nyahwo (55) was acquitted of the charges earlier this year by Marondera Magistrate Sharon Rakafa, who referred to the case as “work politics” in her ruling.
Nyahwo had been suspended for three months while awaiting the resolution of the court proceedings. Ruled the court:

There is a possibility that the allegations could be a result of work politics. The doubt that exists works in the accused’s favour.
In casu, thus the court has decided to err on the caution and exonerate the accused on the charges. In the foregoing, the accused is found not guilty and acquitted.

During the court proceedings, several students who testified said that they were “coached” by a teacher to provide statements against Nyahwo.
Nyahwo also faced a government disciplinary committee, which subsequently cleared him of the same allegations.
MCZ secretary for education Daniel Muzenda said the contents of the letter circulating on social media were falsehoods. Said Muzenda:

We are unfazed by that, we are not giving in to the demands of people who spread falsehoods. There is normalcy at our school and it is business as usual.
Our teacher, Nyahwo, was accused of indecent assault and it is public knowledge that he was acquitted by the courts.
Government also conducted its own investigations and he was cleared. This is the position. Whoever is behind the message circulating has his or her own motive, we are not moved by that.
</blockquote>
The anonymous letter’s author also accused the MCZ-run institution of transferring teachers perceived to be opposed to Nyahwo. Said Muzenda:

As for the issue of transfers, it is false to say that they emanate from this issue. It is a routine thing within our organisations.
Teachers or school heads can be transferred following necessary procedures. For example, we have a school head who was transferred five times, rotating our schools. It’s not new at all.

Methodist Church Denies Covering For Waddilove High School Teacher

The National Association of School Heads (NASH) Mashonaland East chapter has instructed schools to provide funding for the Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (COSASSA) competitions, which will take place in Bulawayo later this month.
In a letter to school heads, NASH specified that each secondary school with 499 pupils or fewer will contribute US$90 per day during the seven-day event. This funding aims to raise the US$10,000 required from each province to support the competition’s costs.
The letter, dated 31 July 2024 and signed by NASH Mashonaland East Provincial chairperson, one P M Rinomhota, reads:

Please be advised that Zimbabwe is hosting the Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (COSASSA) In Bulawayo from the 25th to the 31st of August 2024. The games will involve five (5) Southern African Countries.
In order to perfectly finance the games NASH National has directed that each province pay USD10 000.00 directly into its account towards financing the games by Thursday 01 August, 2024.
To ensure that NASH Mashonaland East Province meets its obligation, the province resolved that each day secondary schools with 499 pupils and below will pay USD90.00. This will be NASH term 3 of 2024 advance affiliation.
Further, be advised that all boarding school heads are expected to attend the games from the 25-31 August 2024 and are to be funded by their schools holistically.
NASH Mash East trusts that your good office will speed up the payment so that the deadline is met.
</blockquote>
Commenting on the letter, one Machenjera P, said:

Is this what the Ministry has okayed? Why should rural kids fund this? Is this not thievery at its worst scale? We demand an answer ASAP.

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) said:

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education probably will look sideways, but when a teacher does extra lessons they will phone ZACC, ZRP and area hoodlums. Not a fair world.

NASH Instructs Schools To Raise US$10,000 For Regional Sports Event

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Schools Championships will be hosted in Bulawayo Province, at Petra College, on the 16th and 17th of August 2024.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) said that the event will see 16 teams competing, with the School Associations providing two teams per gender: a national select team and the winners of the 2024 national championships.
The school associations are the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH), the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH), the Association of Trust Schools (ATS), and the Zimbabwe Independent Colleges Association (ZICA). ZIFA said:

The tournament is an Under-15 competition catering for children born on or after the 1st of January 2010, and provides a unique platform for young football talent across the nation to showcase their skills, fostering not only sporting excellence but also the spirit of unity and camaraderie among participants.
In conjunction with the championship, several developmental programmes will be held to enhance the skills and knowledge of young participants.

The developmental programmes comprise the Young Referees Course, Young Medical Officers Course, and Safeguarding Training.
A total of 40 participants aged between 15 and 20 years will undergo the Referees Class 4 licence course.
This initiative aims to equip the next generation of referees with the necessary skills and knowledge to officiate at various levels of the game.
The Young Medical Officers Course will be facilitated by the Red Cross, and the course will provide training for 20 students and 20 teachers, focusing on essential medical skills that are critical during sports events.
All technical and team officials involved in the championship will receive training in safeguarding, ensuring that the highest standards of safety and welfare are maintained throughout the event.
ZIFA added that the championship will serve as a selection platform for the national U15 teams for boys and girls.
The selected teams will go on to represent Zimbabwe in the COSAFA Zonal Phase, scheduled to be held in Namibia from the 5th to the 8th of September 2024.

Petra College in Bulawayo will host the CAF African Schools Championships on August 16 and 17, 2024. Sixteen teams will compete, with two teams per gender from different school associations. The tournament is for children born in 2010 and aims to showcase talent and unity. Developmental programs will also be held for referees, medical officers, and safeguarding. Petra College In Bulawayo To Host CAF African Schools Championships

The University of Zimbabwe has summoned academic and support staff to a meeting at the Great Hall within the campus where they will be assigned roles to clean up the institution in preparation for the SADC public lecture scheduled for August 15.
In a memorandum dated August 8, 2024, addressed to all chairpersons in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Professor Fainos Mangena said an attendance register will be used to ensure all staff members attend the meeting. Reads the memo:

Kindly note that we have a clean-up campaign tomorrow, Friday 9 August 2024, in preparation for the SADC public lecture to be hosted by the University of Zimbabwe on Thursday 15 August 2024. We are all (academics and support staff) expected to assemble by 0830hrs tomorrow at the Great Hall where we are going to be addressed before we are assigned our cleaning duties. There shall be an attendance register, so do not decide to absent yourself from this important exercise.

While some commentators expressed shock that academic staff would be tasked with cleaning tasks such as toilets rather than hiring professional cleaning services, others argued that this practice is normal in countries like Singapore.

The University of Zimbabwe wants teachers and staff to help clean the campus before a big event. They have to go to a meeting to get their cleaning jobs. UZ Lecturers Summoned For Campus Cleanup Ahead Of SADC Summit

The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Amon Murwira, said the government will “jealously” guard the quality of the country’s education system.
Murwira made the remarks during his speech at the Harare Polytechnic College graduation ceremony on Wednesday, 07 August. He said:

So the way we do our education is vital. That’s why it is sacrosanct to guard the quality of our education. We will guard it jealously.
Therefore, it is important to focus on our education, our skills, on our knowledge.
The purpose of education is to liberate people. Liberation means when you want food, you get it, when you want anything you get it.

He also challenged graduates to use their acquired skills to develop Zimbabwe and the rest of the continent. Said Murwira:

Zimbabwe has embraced quality assurance in higher education since the 1990s through the establishment of the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE).
This body ensures that institutions meet certain standards and continuously improve their educational offerings.
In March 2024, ZIMCHE announced that the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP) was not authorised to award degrees in Zimbabwe as it is not a registered higher education institution.
It made the declaration after IIP had conferred honorary degrees upon several Zimbabweans, among them Dilesh Nguwaya, Midlands businesswoman Smelly Dube, Fatima Maruta, who runs an orphanage, and Paul Shambare.
Meanwhile, 3 460 students graduated from the Harare Polytechnic College. The event ran under the theme “Transforming learning, research and intellectual excellence for accelerated innovation and industrialisation through heritage-based Education 5.0”.

Applications For 2025-2026 Chevening Scholarships Are Now Open

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) says Ordinary and Advanced Level candidates who do not have a Continuous Assessment Learning Area (CALA) mark, will not get their results even if they have written the theoretical part of the examinations, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/no-cala-no-results-for-o-and-a-level-learners/">The Herald</a>.
Speaking at the release of June O and A-Level results at a Press conference in Harare on Tuesday, 06 August, ZIMSEC board chairperson Professor Paul Mapfumo said:
<blockquote>
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s position is that if a candidate does not have a CALA mark, then there will be no results even if the theoretical part of the examination was written.
</blockquote>
In February 2024, the Government announced changes to the education curriculum, with CALA now being called school-based projects.
At the infant level of ECD A to Grade 2, subjects under CALA were reduced from the previous 11 to six and this reduction was extended to apply at the junior level of Grades 3 to 7.
At the secondary school level, the core and compulsory learning areas were reduced from seven to five.
Meanwhile, Prof Mapfumo said a total of 32 026 candidates registered for the O-Level June 2024 examinations and of these, there were 919 school candidates and 31 107 private candidates.
He also said a total of 30 088 of the 32 026 who registered for O-Level sat for a range of subjects from one to seven in June 2024 compared to 21 683 candidates who sat for a range of subjects from one to eight in June 2023. Said Prof Mapfumo:

This shows an increase of 8 405 candidates which translates to 38.76 percent and the number of school candidates was 825 while 29 263 were private candidates.
There was an increase in candidates with special needs from 14 to 38 translating to a 157 percentage increase.
</blockquote>
A total of 1,938 of the registered candidates did not sit for the examinations and were recorded as absent. Said Prof Mapfumo:
<blockquote>
The total number of candidates who sat for five or more subjects in the June 2024 examinations was 383 which is 1.27 percent of the total candidature of 30 088 and the remainder sat for less than five subjects.
Of these 383, 17 candidates passed with a Grace C or better yielding a total pass rate of 4.44 percent. In comparison, the total number of candidates who sat for five or more subjects in June 2023 was 365 which was 1.68 percent of the total candidature of 21 683 and the remainder sat for four or less. Of these, 99 candidates passed with Grade C or better yielding a pass rate of 0.46 percent.
</blockquote>
Prof Mapfumo said the total number of candidates who registered for the June 2024 A-level examination was 144 and of these, 125 were private candidates and 19 were school candidates. He said:
<blockquote>
The total number of those who sat for the June 2024 Advanced level examination was 120 as compared to 256 who sat for the same examination in 2023. There was a decrease of 136 in candidature, translating to a percentage decrease of 53 per cent.
Of these, 52 candidates wrote two or more subjects and 38 obtained a Grade E or better in two or more subjects. This translates to an overall pass rate of 31.67 per cent.
In comparison, in the June 2023 examination, 112 candidates wrote two or more subjects and 85 obtained a Grade E or better in two or more subjects.
This translated to a 75.89 per cent pass rate. These statistics show that there was a 44.22 per cent decrease in the overall pass rate.

ZIMSEC announced that students without CALA marks won't get their O and A-Level results. CALA is now school-based projects in the curriculum. In June 2024, 32,026 O-Level candidates wrote exams, with an increase from last year. 30,088 candidates sat for the exams, with a pass rate of 4.44%. For A-Levels, 144 candidates registered, and 120 sat for the exams, with a pass rate of 31.67%. In 2023, there were more A-Level candidates and a higher pass rate. The changes in the curriculum and lack of CALA marks impacted the results.

No CALA, No Results For O' And A' Level Candidates - ZIMSEC

Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has released the Ordinary and Advanced Level June examinations.
The results were announced by ZIMSEC Board Chair Professor Paul Mapfumo during a media briefing in Harare on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education said a 25 per cent pass rate was recorded at O’ Level while a 72.23 per cent pass rate was recorded at A’ Level.
In a statement, ZIMSEC said that candidates can access the results online using the results portal on <a class="css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3 r-1loqt21" dir="ltr" href="https://t.co/bvzf3iDrO1" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" role="link" target="_blank">http://zimsec.co.zw</a>. 
The examinations management body also said Heads of Centres can collect results from their respective regional offices on Wednesday 7th of August.

ZIMSEC June 2024 O-Level And A-Level Results Out

Four primary schools near Matusadona National Park are set to benefit from a €200,000 feeding scheme that will last until March 2025.
The schools receiving support are Nselelo Primary School (under Chief Negande), Dove Primary School (Chief Mola), Chikuro Primary School (Chief Nebiri), and Majazo Primary School (Chief Musambakaruma).
Tinashe Farawo, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), revealed the details of the feeding scheme during a media tour of the national park.
In 2019, Zimparks invited African Parks to assume management of Matusadona National Park under a 20-year agreement. The goal is to revitalise the park for the benefit of both wildlife and surrounding communities.
Farawo said that the feeding scheme targets approximately 1,300 children. Said Farawo (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200030502/feeding-scheme-benefits-1-300-school-children">The Standard</a>):

The scheme is expected to improve school attendance and reduce dropouts. Remember this is a very difficult year.
The harvest from this region was close to nothing owing to the less rainfall received.
The school feeding programme will have a major impact on children’s physical health, development and learning outcomes as, for many children, food at school will be the first meal of the day.
Adequate nutrition is essential for optimal cognitive function and learning. In drought-affected areas, where families may struggle to provide sufficient meals, feeding schemes in schools can ensure that students receive regular and nutritious meals.

Last week, United Nations officials appealed to the international community for support to help Zimbabwe address the humanitarian impacts of El Niño which is threatening 7.6 million people with acute hunger.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 22 per cent of school-aged children are out of school because of the economic and social impacts of the drought.

Feeding Scheme Benefits 1,300 Primary School Learners

The government has announced changes to the dates for the August 2024 holiday school classes. The new schedule will be from August 9 to August 22, instead of the previously announced August 19 to August 30, reported the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/government-changes-schools-closing-date-for-examination-classes/">Chronicle</a>.
This revised calendar means that when schools close for the Second Term on August 8, public examination-sitting classes – including Grade 7, Form 4, and Form 6 students – will continue with lessons until August 22.
The changes were confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Mike Mhike, in a statement sent to educational authorities across the country.
According to Mhike, the new holiday school calendar will enable the Ministry to conduct more effective supervision and oversight of schools during this critical examination preparation period. He said:

Following the release of the Secretary’s Circular Number 6 of 2024 on the above subject matter and the engagements that followed thereafter, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education informs that the Vacation School for August holidays will run from 9 August to 22 August for all schools. The timeframe of 19th to 30 August as given earlier, is cancelled.
The rest of the Secretary’s Circular Number 6 of 2024 content remains the same. The decision taken to this effect will allow Grade 7, Form Four and Upper Six pupils to continue with learning while the rest of the grades and forms close schools on the 8th of August 2024.
</blockquote>
Mhike also said that the latest decision will reduce the travel costs that boarders would have faced under the previous vacation school calendar.
He added that the new dates will enable the inspectorate to monitor vacation schools within a standardised timeframe for all institutions.
Mhike said the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education reserves the right to further revise this statement.
The fees for these vacation lessons were set at the following rates per subject (in US dollars): Grade 7 – $2, Form 4 – $3, and Form 6 – $5. Boarding students will be required to pay an extra $4 per day.
However, parents are allowed to pay in the currency of their choice.

The government changed the dates for August holiday classes for Grade 7, Form 4, and Form 6 learners. Instead of August 19-30, classes will now be from August 9-22. This change will help the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education supervise exam preparation. The fees for these classes are $2 for Grade 7, $3 for Form 4, and $5 for Form 6. Boarding students will also pay extra. Parents can pay in any currency they prefer. This decision may be revised in the future.

Grade 7, Form 4 And Form 6 Learners To Close On 22 August

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi-Chiwenga, have spearheaded the transformation of Sababa Primary School in Insiza District, Matabeleland South Province, in partnership with other stakeholders.
The school has undergone significant infrastructure development, including the establishment of a computer laboratory and a new administration block.
Additionally, solar panels have been installed to power a borehole, to support a horticulture project, with the garden produce aiding the school feeding programme.
Furthermore, the teachers’ cottages have been electrified and renovated, and the previously dilapidated school infrastructure has been refurbished.
This refurbishment involved repainting the buildings, patching floors, and replacing deteriorated roofing materials.
The school has also received 20 computers donated by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology and an additional 10 desktop computers contributed by the Chiwenga family.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/vp-chiwengas-family-helps-transform-sababa-school/">state media</a>, Isabel Moyo, the chairperson of the Sababa Primary School Development Committee, expressed optimism that the improvements will help retain both teachers and students and potentially improve the pass rate at the school. She said:

Our school had become an eyesore. Classroom blocks were in a terrible state, and some parents were transferring their children as they had lost trust in us as an educational facility. Teachers were also shunning the school, affecting our pass rate.
The intervention has brought back long-lost hope. Our school can now attract teachers and we have electrified teachers’ cottages and an administration block, which is a huge development for us.
</blockquote>
Speaking after commissioning the projects at Sababa Primary School, Col. Baloyi-Chiwenga said:
<blockquote>
The project at Sababa Primary School started late last year, and we vowed to ensure its timely completion.
I was gravely concerned by the school’s dilapidated state. I engaged my husband, the Vice President, who has been very supportive.
I approached the Minister of ICT, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, and her Ministry provided 20 laptops under the Government’s project of computers in rural schools.
As the Chiwenga family, we have also provided 10 desktops, which will be delivered soon. The President has said no one and no place will be left behind, and as a family, we saw it prudent to contribute towards making this vision a reality. We decided to do our part to ensure that the Insiza community isn’t left behind.
</blockquote>
Col. Baloyi-Chiwenga completed her Grade 3 to 7 studies at Sababa Primary School. She also implored various stakeholders to contribute towards improving education in rural schools.

Vice President Chiwenga and his wife helped fix up a rural school in Zimbabwe. They built a computer lab, new buildings, and powered a borehole with solar panels. Teachers' houses were fixed up, and old school buildings were renovated. They got 20 computers from the government and 10 more from their family. The chairperson of the school committee said the changes will keep students and teachers happy. Chiwenga's wife, who went to the school, said they wanted to help rural communities. They want others to help improve schools too.

Chiwengas Lead Transformation Of Rural School In Insiza District

A recent notice sent out to prospective undergraduate students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe shows the cost of a university education in the country.
According to the notice, student pay amounts ranging from US $500 to $650 depending on their undergraduate degree program.

The notice did not include accommodation fees. However some research shows that NUST offers On-Campus accommodation at $7 (single rooms) and $6 (sharing rooms) a day. The fee includes 3 meals a day. 
A semester is at least 4 months so this works out to about $800 a semester for accommodation.
Off-Campus accommodation is also offered at the recently built Old Mutual Student Complex and this goes for $90 a month, but does not include any meals. Students have to arrange meals for themselves.
Since the Old Mutual Student Complex belongs to Old Mutual, fees are paid to the company directly.

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe charges students between $500 and $650 for a semester, depending on the program they are studying. There are additional fees for studios, clinics, and locations. On-campus accommodation costs about $800 a semester, while off-campus options are also available. NUST is a prestigious university in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Some people think the cost of education in Zimbabwe is too high because of the economy.

NUST Fees: How Much A Zimbabwe University Semester Costs

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has said approximately 128 teachers are dying each month across the country due to stress caused by low salaries and poor working conditions.
In a statement, PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou said that the meagre salaries have led to a concerning rise in cases of suicide, divorce, and domestic violence among teachers. Said Zhou:

Poverty and its resultant psycho-social effects are killing many teachers across Zimbabwe.
There has been a quantum leap of suicides, fatal domestic quarrels and divorces as a result of poor salaries in Zimbabwe.
Our research has shown that on average two teachers are dying in every district every month because of poverty and psycho-social stress. Cumulatively, 128 teachers are dying every month and 1,536 every year…
There is an urgent need to intervene by the line ministry, Public Service Commission (PSC) and government to ameliorate the high rate of attrition.
The intervention must be in the form of paying teachers a living wage rather than the current starvation wages they are receiving.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa will go down in history as a President who caused the death of many teachers in Zimbabwe through starvation.

Before October 2018, teachers and other civil servants earned approximately US$540 per month. However, in October 2018, their salaries were converted to the local currency.
Currently, teachers are receiving around US$250 per month, plus less than ZiG2 000. The ZiG, however, cannot buy fuel and basic grocery items from the popular tuckshops.

"128 Teachers Dying Every Month Due To Poor Salaries"

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has condemned the government for dismissing the union’s president, Obert Masaraure, from his teaching position at Chemhanza High School in Hwedza.
Masaraure, who was employed as a Chemistry teacher, was dismissed on the grounds of absence from duty.
In a statement, ARTUZ Secretary General Robson Nikita Chere denounced the government’s actions as a violation of workers’ rights and called for the reinstatement of Masaraure to his teaching position. Said Chere:

The government of Zimbabwe, in the form of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education through the Public Service Commission has once again trampled on the basic rights of workers in Zimbabwe by illegally and unilaterally discharging the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) President from his teaching position.
The government employed the usual modus operandi of concocting strange non-existent charges against President Masaraure.

Chere revealed that before his dismissal, Masaraure had gone for over 5 years without receiving his full salary, with junior government officials reportedly unwilling to address and resolve the issue. Said Chere:

The government proceeded to cease the President’s salary for more than 5 years. We naturally pressed for the remuneration of the President only for the government to discharge him from his employment.
We on behalf of the Union tried to engage the employer over the issue. Our spirited efforts of engagement were stonewalled as staffers whom we met were hesitant and even afraid of engaging. Some powerful force was apparently leaning on them. Call it duress or undue influence if you like.
</blockquote>
Chere declared that the union would vigorously oppose Masaraure’s dismissal, using every available means, and work to reinstate him in his position. He said:

We will leave no stone unturned and no turn unstoned as we claim justice for the President. All legal apparatus have since been activated to correct this illegality.
Let be known that all teachers in particular and all workers in general stand behind and with our Union President against this injustice.
We will provide leadership and direction until Cde Masaraure is reinstated and restitution is effected. That is a promise.
We treat the unlawful discharge letter as another just piece of toilet paper have already used it in the rightful ablution facility and flush it to the sewage plant.

On March 30, 2024, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s Provincial Education Director for Mashonaland East, Anatoria Ncube, officially notified Masaraure in writing of his dismissal from the public service. She wrote:

It has been noted that your salary was ceased after you failed to report for duty. You did not, thereafter, come forward to claim your salary or avail yourself to your Head office to advise why you had failed or were failing to report for duty. You have still not reported for work to date.
You were thus absent from duty for a continuous period in excess of thirty days without having been granted leave of absence.
Through the minute referenced A/126/3C dated 30 May 2014, the Secretary discharged you from the service, in terms of section 63. (e) Of Statutory Instrument 1 of 2000 as amended, with effect from after duty on 24 May 2019 the last day you reported for duty.

ARTUZ Vows To Fight For Dismissed Union President Masaraure's Reinstatement

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) has claimed that 10 of its members were injured when armed anti-riot police raided their private meeting at the ZESA Training Centre in Belvedere, Harare on Wednesday, 24 July.
Speaking to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/police-raid-on-zinasu-meeting-leaves-10-injured-44-arrested/">CITE,</a> ZINASU Harare Provincial Chairperson Tatenda Kudzai said they were holding a meeting when police descended on the venue and brutalised some of the students. Said Kudzai:

The notorious anti-riot police officers invaded our meeting and started beating up students, leaving a dozen with injuries.
As we speak right now, our President, Emmanuel Sitima, has been taken and is held captive and treated like a terrorist at the Harare Central Police Station.

According to student activist Vital Maronjese, the protesters were conducting themselves peacefully when they were brutally assaulted by the police. Said Maronjese:

When they arrived, they appeared like people who wanted to understand our meeting. Little did we know that the indiscriminate brutal assault was about to begin. We started running in different directions, and amid the chaos, I was injured.
However, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police intervened after being called to attend a violent situation that had erupted among the students.

Nyathi said police were not responsible for the violence but were called in to maintain law and order.
The 44 arrested students were taken to Harare Central Police Station, where they were made to pay a US$20 fine each before being released.
However, ZINASU leader Emmanuel Sitima remained in police custody.
Heal Zimbabwe Trust Advocacy Officer and former ZINASU Secretary Tapiwanashe Chiriga said:

The arrests came just two after Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe issued a warning to citizens to “behave” or face consequences.
Speaking at the burial of Brigadier General Michael Chaminuka on Monday, Kazembe said:

Police Raid On ZINASU Meeting Leaves 10 Injured

Obert Masaraure, the president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe’s dismissal was due to his unauthorised absence from duty for a continuous period exceeding 30 days, without having been granted leave of absence.
This is according to a termination letter dated May 3, 2024, addressed to Masaraure by the Mashonaland East Provincial Education Director, Anatoria Ncube
Masaraure was employed as a Chemistry teacher at Chemhanza High School in Hwedza district.
The letter indicates that Masaraure had been absent from work since 2019, and his termination was effective from May 24, 2019, the last day he reported for duty. Part of the letter reads:

Headman Matenga of Matobo has reportedly issued an ultimatum to villagers, demanding that they pay outstanding school fees at Mambale Primary School or face the seizure of their livestock.
A meeting was held last week where parents with unpaid fees were given a deadline of July 29, 2024, to clear their arrears.
Speaking to CITE’s <a href="https://cite.org.zw/author/senzeni/">Senzeni Ncube</a>, a disgruntled villager said they are facing “a serious problem” due to the Headman’s directive. He said:

We’re facing a serious problem here. The headman, along with the school principal, called a meeting last Wednesday at Mambale Primary School for parents who owe school fees.
He also claimed that they were instructed to pay R300 to the school by the specified date. He added:
Those who fail to comply will be visited by a chief’s messenger, incurring an additional US$20 fee.

It is further alleged that the headman rejected school fee payments facilitated by the government, citing delays in processing. Said a source:

My father is a war veteran, and we submitted forms at Mhlahlandlela last term for the government to cover the fees.
But the headman rejected it, saying the government takes too long to pay. Now, my father has to pay out of pocket and hopes to be reimbursed once the government comes through.
When my father requested a letter from the school to take to Mhlahlandlela, they refused to give him one.

When contacted for comment, Headman Matenga confirmed calling a meeting to encourage parents to settle their outstanding fees. He said:

We held a meeting to urge parents to pay their school fees. According to the teachers, most haven’t paid in a long time.

Responding to the concerns raised by the disgruntled villagers, Headman Matenga acknowledged setting a due date for parents to meet with the School Development Committee (SDC) and teachers.
However, he clarified that the intent was to provide a platform for parents to discuss their fee arrears and establish mutually agreeable payment plans, rather than threaten livestock seizure.
The headman explained that mentioning the involvement of the chief’s messenger was meant to motivate parents to engage with the school authorities and ensure the institution’s smooth operation.

Govt Fires Rural Teachers' Union Leader Obert Masaraure From His Teaching Job

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has issued a stern warning to schools against barring learners from sitting for end-of-term examinations due to unpaid school fees.
This follows reports that some schools have been denying students the opportunity to take their end-of-term exams if they have outstanding fee balances. 
Reports suggest that only those who have settled their fees in full are currently being permitted to sit for the examinations.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/schools-barring-learners-from-exams-warned/">The Herald</a> on Monday, Primary and Secondary Education Ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro condemned this practice, adding that denying learners the chance to take their exams is a clear violation of their rights.
Said Ndoro:

It is a fundamental right for every child to access education and no student should be denied the opportunity to sit for examinations due to unpaid fees.
This policy is in alignment with the Government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive and equitable education for all students.
The Government upholds the principle that education is a right for every child. Denying students the opportunity to write examinations because of unpaid fees contravenes this principle.
Schools are encouraged to find alternative ways to address financial issues without compromising the students’ right to education.

According to The Herald, two schools in Harare, Glen View High School 1 and Glen View High School 2, have been denying students the opportunity to write their end-of-term examinations if they have outstanding school fees.
Glen View 1 High School Development Committee chairperson, Tarirai Samambgwa, allegedly informed parents in a WhatsApp group chat that students with unpaid fees would not be permitted to sit for the examinations, which commenced on July 10.
The message directed to parents reads in part:

Facilitating these examinations requires a significant amount of money, as various materials are needed for science and practical subjects.
However, the school is currently facing a challenge due to outstanding payments from some parents.
This mid-year examination stage is crucial for a child’s education and to ensure its success, all school fees must be paid in full.
Therefore, only students who have paid their school fees in full will be provided with the necessary requirements to sit for these exams.
</blockquote>
Unlike past practices where school authorities would simply lock out learners with outstanding fees, preventing them from accessing the examination rooms, schools have allegedly adopted a different approach this time.
Instead of barring these students from the school premises entirely, the school authorities are instead directing them to spend their time playing on the school grounds while their peers are writing the examinations.
Ndoro said the Ministry was aware of reports concerning Glen View High School 1 and 2 and was investigating the reports. He said:

Govt Warns Schools Barring Learners From Exams Due To Unpaid Fees

The Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO) has reportedly failed to pay more than 300 lecturers who have been marking examination papers at Harare Polytechnic College since the marking exercise began on July 11, 2024.
The affected lecturers are from various polytechnic institutions, vocational training colleges, and independent colleges across the country.
Some of the lecturers who spoke to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200029732/hexco-fails-to-pay-examiners">NewsDay</a> claim to have sacrificed their limited personal resources to travel to Harare and participate in the marking exercise. Said one lecturer:

We were supposed to receive advance payment from HEXCO to cater for our travel and subsistence.
</blockquote>
The lecturers said they had not been provided formal contracts outlining the terms of their engagement to mark the examination scripts.
They also claimed that the accommodation arranged for them at Harare Polytechnic consisted of substandard hostels that lacked basic amenities such as running water. Said another lecturer:

When we got here, we were allocated a bucket to fetch water at the college for bathing and flushing in the toilets.
We have some elderly lecturers and others who are finding it difficult to ferry water upstairs at the hostels.
</blockquote>
Another lecturer said:
<blockquote>
Other lecturers who are almost finishing their marking allocations are worried about how they are going to find their way back home without payment.
</blockquote>
In the past, HEXCO has dropped lecturers for speaking out against non-payment and ill-treatment.

More than 300 lecturers who marked exams at Harare Polytechnic College haven't been paid by HEXCO. Lecturers sacrificed their own money to travel there. They didn't get a contract or good accommodation. They had to fetch water in buckets. Some lecturers are worried about getting home without payment. HEXCO has a history of dropping lecturers for complaining about not getting paid.

HEXCO Fails To Pay Examiners

Teachers have welcomed the move by the government to lift the ban on paid extra lessons ahead of the August holidays.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 17 July, the Permanent Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education, Moses Mhike, said that vacation lessons will take place from 19 to 30 August.
Fees have been pegged at US$2 per learning area (subject) for Grade Seven learners, US$3 per O-Level subject and US$5 per A-Level subject for the whole duration.
However, boarding students will be charged an additional US$4 daily, over and above the established fees.
Mhike said teachers should receive a 50 per cent appreciation fee, with 20 per cent allocated to administration and 30 per cent designated for utilities and stationery.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/teachers-parents-welcome-govt-move-on-holiday-lessons/">The Herald</a> following the announcement, Sifiso Ndlovu, the chief executive of the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA), said:

As long as our competency measurement is based on examinations, and even more so now that examinations account for 80 per cent of the assessment, the need for extra tuition will always be prevalent.
We welcome this development, as it is what most educators, who want to see their learners pass and excel, love to see.
We must reasonably focus on assisting learners to achieve their utmost best, rather than viewing it as a money-spinning venture.
It is simply an assistance to help learners gain as much competency as possible in preparation for an examination that determines their future pathways.

Zimbabwe National School Heads Union Secretary General Munyaradzi Majoni commended the government for the move but expressed reservations about the criteria used to determine the fees, questioning the methodology behind the pricing structure Said Majoni:

Fundamentally, the idea of holiday lessons for candidates is an issue that we, as unions, have been pushing for, and the fact that the Government has accepted and given the green light to schools to conduct these holiday lessons, we take that as a positive thing.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) president Obert Masaraure also welcome the move by the government. He wrote on X:

We welcome the authorization of vacation school. Pegging a uniform fee and formalising teacher incentives is on point.
We urge the government to release grants to schools to cater for the fees. Most parents won’t afford the fees because of the drought. US$10,660,550 will cater for all candidates.

Several years ago, the government banned the practice of teachers providing extra paid lessons outside of regular school hours.
This followed concerns that teachers were neglecting their official duties during the normal school day and only teaching those students whose parents could afford the additional fees.

Teachers Applaud Removal Of Ban On Paid Extra Lessons

The government, through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, has authorised schools to conduct vacation lessons from August 19 to August 30, 2024, targeting examination classes – specifically, Grade 7, Form 4, and Form 6 students.
The fees for these vacation lessons have been set at the following rates per learning area (in US dollars): Grade 7 – $2, Form 4 – $3, and Form 6 – $5. Boarding students will be required to pay an extra $4 per day.
However, parents are allowed to pay in the currency of their choice.
The Secretary’s Circular Number 6 of 2024, dated 16 July 2024, and addressed to Chief Directors, Provincial Education Directors, Directors, District Schools Inspectors, National Association of Primary Heads, National Association of Secondary Heads, Heads of Primary and Secondary Schools, Church Education Secretaries, Teacher Associations, Association of Trust Schools, Independent Colleges and Responsible Authorities reads in part:

Therefore, for the year, 2024, AUTHORITY IS GRANTED for schools to conduct vacation school during the August holidays for the examination classes of Grade 7, Form Four (4) and Upper Six (6.
1. The holiday lessons will take place between 19 and 30 August, a period of ten (10) working days only.
2. Primary schools will charge USD$2.00 per Learning Area per Grade 7 pupil or its equivalent bank rate in Zimbabwe Gold currency.
3. Secondary Schools will charge USD$3.00 per Learning Area for Form Four (4) and USD$5.00 per Learning Area for Upper Six (6) or its equivalent bank rate in Zimbabwe Gold currency.
4. All borders will pay an extra USD$4.00 per day for their upkeep during the Vacation School period.
5. Parents and guardians should receive receipts at the point of payment and proper books of accounts must be effectively managed and maintained for audit trail.
6. The Vacation School should be fully supervised and monitored by the Inspectorate, together with the District Literacy Coordinators and the Remedial Tutors.
7. Pupils should turn out in their school uniforms and teachers should be appropriately dressed. The tenets of Safe to Learn principles with reference to the pupil safeguarding Circulars should be upheld and made reference to.
8. Every effort should be made to engage parents and /or guardians so that all candidates benefit from the Vacation School.

The Ministry further stipulated that the funds collected by both day schools and boarding schools, excluding the boarding expenses, should be utilised in the following manner:

<li>30% of the funds should be allocated for stationery and learning materials</li>
<li>20% should be directed towards administrative expenses</li>

The government says schools can have special classes in August for Grade 7, Form 4, and Form 6 students. These classes will cost $2 for Grade 7, $3 for Form 4, and $5 for Form 6. If students stay at school, they pay $4 extra each day. Parents can pay in any money they want.
