South African police have provided new details about a shooting on the N1, where a motorist shot and killed three alleged hijackers at the Diepkloof interchange in Soweto, Gauteng.
The three suspected hijackers were declared dead on Tuesday, with their bodies covered in foil next to a white Toyota Hilux double cab bakkie.
Reports from The Star newspaper described how the armed civilian defended himself against a group of suspected hijackers, resulting in a deadly confrontation at the interchange.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said that the motorist was driving when he was approached by individuals in two vehicles claiming to be police officers. Said Nevhuhulwi:

It is alleged that a man was driving on the highway when occupants on two different vehicles signalled him to stop and showed him what looked like a police appointment certificate.
When he stopped, three males from the red Kia Rio vehicle approached and told him there is something wrong under his car.
When he bent to check, he was pointed with a knife and instructed not to move as they wanted his car and not him.
The motorist who had a firearm on his waist immediately responded and started shooting.
The suspects from another vehicle, a blue Ford Focus, also shot back while driving off. Three suspects were declared dead on the scene.

She said that police in Gauteng are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, and attempted hijacking.
Motorists in Gauteng are advised to remain vigilant while driving and to report any suspicious activities.

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs is set to revoke the identity and travel documents of former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina and her Mozambican-born mother.
Home Affairs officials provided an update to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee regarding ongoing investigations into corruption and related issues.
Home Affairs director-general Tommy Makhode told the committee that the department’s counter-corruption and security services completed their investigation, and the matter has been referred to the Hawks for further action. He said (via <a href="https://www.citizen.co.za/news/home-affairs-chidimma-adetshina-fraud-hawks/">Citizen</a>):

That matter is currently with the DPCI [Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation]. They have concluded that investigation according to [Hawks head] General [Godfrey] Lebeya, they are now waiting for the NPA [National Prosecuting Authority] to advise them on the next steps.

Makhode said that Adetshina and her mother did not respond by the 28 October deadline to provide reasons for retaining their South African documents. He said:

As of yesterday, we have not received any response and, therefore, the department will be proceeding with the withdrawal of those documents in line with the Identification Act.
</blockquote>
He added that Adetshina and her mother could face fraud charges.
Albert Matsaung, acting deputy director-general for immigration at Home Affairs, told MPs that officials visited a property registered to Chidimma Adetshina in an attempt to locate her mother.
Matsaung confirmed that Adetshina’s mother had not been arrested because she could not be found at the residence. He stated that records indicate she is still in the country.
Home Affairs could not determine how Adetshina’s mother travelled to Nigeria last month to support her daughter at the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, which Adetshina won.
No movement was recorded in the department’s systems for her registered passport number.
Matsaung noted that Adetshina’s mother appears frequently on social media, including Instagram, and there are photos from the Nigeria event that seem to show her.
He added that despite the similarities in appearance between the individual in the photos and Adetshina’s mother, no trace of her passport used for travel from Mozambique to South Africa was found. The investigation is still ongoing.
Adetshina’s recent Instagram posts indicate she is currently in the United States, where she is preparing to participate in the Miss Universe pageant scheduled for November 16 in Mexico.
Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student from Soweto, gained attention by entering the Miss South Africa competition this year.
She withdrew from the contest on August 8, citing safety concerns related to speculation about her nationality.
Her withdrawal followed a statement from Home Affairs, which claimed her mother may have obtained citizenship fraudulently by assuming another person’s identity.
This allegation emerged after an investigation into archival records and hospital visits.
The department also identified both the mother and child as being affected by the alleged identity theft.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Botswana, Henry Mukonoweshuro, has urged Zimbabwean nationals residing in the neighbouring country to exercise increased vigilance amid rising threats of violence against them.
This warning comes in response to reports suggesting that some Batswana plan to launch attacks on Zimbabweans following a controversial campaign by ZANU PF members, led by Patrick Chinamasa, in support of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) ahead of the October 30 harmonised elections.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, who is seeking reelection, is considered a close ally of Zimbabwe’s leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In a statement issued on Friday, Mukonoweshuro reassured the Zimbabwean community that the Embassy has received commitments from the Botswana Police Services (BPS) to ensure the safety of all law-abiding Zimbabweans during this electoral period. Said Mukonoweshuro:

Following recent social media reports alleging possible involvement of Zimbabwean nationals in the Botswana electoral processes and the negative reactions thereafter, the Embassy wishes to advise all Zimbabwean nationals resident in Botswana to exercise caution during this election period.

Former opposition Member of Parliament, Job Sikhala, has called on ZANU PF to stop meddling in the electoral processes of neighbouring countries.
He warned that such interference not only jeopardizes the stability of those nations but also puts Zimbabweans living there at risk.
Sikhala warned that ZANU PF’s actions could lead to serious repercussions for Zimbabwe’s relations with its neighbours and urged the party to respect the sovereignty and electoral integrity of other countries.

Mozambique’s ruling party candidate, Daniel Chapo, has been declared the winner of the country’s 09 October presidential election amid opposition claims of rigging.
Chapo, from the FRELIMO party, which has been in power since 1975, when the country attained independence from Portugal, secured more than 70 per cent of the votes, the National Election Commission (CNE) said on Thursday. This comfortably cleared the 50% mark needed to avoid a second round.
Venâncio Mondlane, who had captured the imagination of many young voters and who claimed to have won the election, came second out of four candidates with 20.3%.
The candidate of the opposition party RENAMO, Ossufo Momade, came third with more than five per cent, according to the CNE.
Mondlane, 50, backed by the PODEMOS party, has claimed he won the vote, alleging electoral fraud and manipulation in favour of FRELIMO.
After the results were announced, Chapo told his supporters that he strongly condemned the recent murders of two opposition figures.
He also criticised the opposition’s strikes, which were meant to protest what they said was ongoing dishonesty.
This week, the police stopped the protests by using tear gas to disperse the crowds. Said Chapo:

As the FRELIMO party, we want to once again reiterate our repudiation of the murders of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe as well as other citizens physically affected in this ongoing process of demonstrations.
</blockquote>
Elvino Dias, an opposition lawyer who had been preparing a legal challenge to the results, and Paulo Guambe, an official with the PODEMOS party, died in a hail of bullets in the early hours of last Saturday.
PODEMOS supported Mondlane, who had been forced to contest the election as an independent.
Chapo promised to “try to do better for the Mozambican people,” no matter their race, religion, or political beliefs.
The 47-year-old Chapo will officially become the president of Mozambique in January, making him the first president born after the country gained independence.
As the commission announced the election results, crowds of supporters for Mondlane gathered in various cities, including Maputo and Nampula, holding signs that read, “Tired of being the slaves of thieves.”
Police blocked their way into central Maputo and used tear gas to disperse protesters who were burning tyres and tearing down election posters.
Other protesters attempted to block the road from the capital to the South African border.
Clashes with police resulted in several injuries across the country, with one reported death in Nampula. Since voting day, Mondlane has called for protests on social media.
Local and international election observers said the vote count was falsified. Mozambique’s Catholic bishops claimed there was ballot stuffing, while EU observers reported “irregularities during counting and unjustified changes to the election results.”
Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and is still recovering from a scandal in 2016 when it was revealed that the government had secretly borrowed $2 billion (£1.5 million) in corrupt loans.
This led the IMF and other financial supporters to stop their assistance, causing the economy to suffer greatly.
Current President Filipe Nyusi of Frelimo is resigning after completing two terms, the maximum permitted.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a South African opposition party, has raised concerns about the R52.8 million (US$2.9 million) spent on deporting illegal immigrants between April and August.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, in a recent Q&amp;A session in parliament, revealed that 19,750 undocumented immigrants were deported, costing the government R52,817,656 (US$2,995,289.27).
This number represents an increase from the 10,808 deportations in 2022/23.
Speaking to TimesLive, EFF MP Thapelo Mogale said the funds could have been better used to strengthen border management and prevent unauthorised entries of foreigners. Said Mogale:

The department is spending excessive amounts of money on the deporting of illegal immigrants in just a few months. If we were to look at it over a period of five years, I’m convinced we would’ve spent a billion or more.
That is money that could be used for other things. We have a border management agency which is grossly underfunded.
If the border management agency is underfunded, then you’ll experience an influx of undocumented people coming into the country.
</blockquote>
Mogale suggested a more practical approach of documenting immigrants rather than spending heavily on deportations. He said:
<blockquote>
These people are here already, and now we have to spend millions to get rid of them. The EFF’s solution is to document these people because they are already here.
In that way we’ll be able to identify those who are undesirable, those who may have criminal records, fugitives of justice, and those who ran away from their countries of origin because of criminal activities.
We’ll be able to keep those kinds of things through that process.
</blockquote>
The leading countries of origin for deported immigrants in 2022/23 were Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The opposition party thinks the money could have been used better to manage the borders properly. South Africa Spends US$3 Million On Deporting Border Jumpers

South African Airways (SAA) reported that it is still facing challenges in repatriating over US$50 million from Zimbabwe. This amount is approximately R1 billion.
As reported by <a href="https://www.ewn.co.za/2024/10/23/saa-says-its-struggling-to-get-over-r1-billion-out-of-zimbabwe">Eyewitness News</a>, during a session with Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA), it was revealed that the ongoing struggle to retrieve these funds, primarily from ticket sales, continues.
SCOPA chairperson Songezo Zibi raised concerns about whether it might be time to seize assets in South Africa to recover the stranded money.
Zimbabwe has been experiencing a foreign exchange crisis since 2016, affecting several airlines in a similar situation.
SAA Chief Financial Officer Lindsay Olitzski said that an agreement had been reached for US$9 million to remain in Zimbabwe for SAA’s local use. Said Olitzski:

The remaining $50 million is to be paid in installments of $1 million per quarter. This is a very long payment plan, and to date, we have not yet received any funds.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said she would consider addressing the issue diplomatically once she received a full report from the airline.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday congratulated FRELIMO presidential candidate Daniel Chapo for a “resounding victory” in the October 9 Mozambican elections, even though electoral authorities in Mozambique have not yet declared the winner.
Mnangagwa, who also serves as the SADC chairperson, made these remarks while addressing the 379th Ordinary Session of the Politburo, marking the start of the 21st ZANU PF Annual National People’s Conference in Harare. He said:

Comrades; I congratulate our sister revolutionary Party, Frelimo and the President-Elect, His Excellency, Cde Daniel Chapo as well as the people of Mozambique on their resounding victory during the recently held elections. ZANU PF stands ready to cement the long-existing revolutionary unity between our parties and countries.

Allegations of vote fraud and violence have marred the Mozambican elections. The opposition party PODEMOS and its presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, have rejected the outcome and called for protests.
Last week, Paulo Guambe, a PODEMOS party representative, and Elvino Dias, the party’s lawyer, were tragically shot dead by unknown gunmen.

Former Botswana president Ian Khama has warned the opposition about ZANU PF’s alleged election rigging activities in the southern African region, saying Zimbabwe’s ruling party “had become a regional cancer”.
Botswana, Africa’s longest democracy, is scheduled to hold General Elections on 30 October 2024.
Khama, campaigning for Butale, addressed supporters at a rally, alleging a plot to rig the upcoming elections on October 30, 2024, in favour of President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
According to media reports, Khama claimed that ZANU PF has become a regional threat, undermining democracy by interfering in other countries’ electoral processes.
He accused Zanu PF of sending agents to rig the forthcoming elections in Botswana.
While campaigning for BPF parliamentary candidate Modiri Jojo Lucas in Francistown, Khama alleged that the Botswana ruling party was preparing to rig the general elections by using Zimbabweans to vote for President Masisi. He said:

The ruling party is preparing to rig the general elections by using Zimbabweans to vote here in Botswana. If Zimbabweans managed to cast their votes in Mozambique’s general elections, they could do that to help the ruling party in Botswana.

Masisi declared October 30 and 31 as public holidays to encourage citizens to vote.
Masisi is seeking a second term, which would be his final one if he is reelected.
According to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/undercover-zim-journalists-vote-in-mozambique-elections/">The Mirror</a>, a regional publication in Zimbabwe, some Zimbabweans, including two undercover journalists, voted in Mozambique’s recent general elections.
The journalists, who were investigating potential electoral rigging, were among the hundreds who cast their votes at Nemanwa Growth Point, just outside Masvingo.
Earlier reports from the Mirror indicated that ZANU PF was mobilising its supporters to register for the Mozambique elections, which took place on October 9, 2024.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has condemned the murder of Mozambican lawyer Elvino Dias and a local politician, Paulo Gambe, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday.
The murders have been linked to the elections held in Mozambique nearly two weeks ago.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 21, Mahamat urged Mozambican security authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. Reads the statement:

According to the SADC Lawyers Association (SADCLA), Dias represented opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane and provided legal services to the PODEMOS political party.
He was killed alongside Paulo Guambe, a representative of PODEMOS. A woman in the same car was injured.
It is alleged that the attackers fired about 25 bullets at the victims, indicating a clear intent to kill, according to SADCLA.

AU Commission Chair Condemns Post-Election Violence In Mozambique

Following the allegations that the Electoral Commission of Namibia awarded a tender to a corrupt South African company linked to Wicknell Chivayo, the ECN has released a statement on its social media pages.
The statement claims that a rigorous process went into selecting Ren-form, and that the value of the tender was not $60 million as reported in the media, but $350,000.

To be clear and set the record straight: the total cost of this contract is N$6,250,686—far from the grossly inflated and fictitious figure of N$1 billion being circulated in certain media reports. Additionally, Ren-Form CC is a South African company, not a Zimbabwean company, and boasts a solid track record of printing ballot papers for over 70 elections on the continent in the past 20 years.
4. The Commission reiterates that the procurement process for the ballot papers was conducted in strict adherence to the Public Procurement Act, No. 15 of 2015, as amended. We emphasize that the authority to make procurement decisions lies solely with the Commission and not with any contesting political party or external influence. Attempts to suggest otherwise are entirely false and meant to distract from the real issue—ensuring the timely and secure preparation of our national election.
5. We wish to categorically state that there is no evidence whatsoever to substantiate any claims of corruption or misconduct in this process. Should any party or individual possess concrete evidence of wrongdoing, we challenge them to present it through the appropriate channels. The Commission will not tolerate baseless accusations meant to discredit our work.
6. As we approach the elections, we urge all Namibians to remain vigilant and informed by relying on credible, verified information. It is the collective responsibility of every citizen to help maintain the integrity of our democratic processes. According to police spokesperson Lawan Adam, the accident occurred past midnight when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling on a highway close to a university. He said:

The driver left Kano and was heading to Nguru in Yobe when the accident happened.

People gathered around the accident scene, which is the reason for the mass casualty.

Several individuals confirmed their identities as Zimbabweans who had voted in the Mozambican elections.
The two journalists reported that they encountered no issues while voting, having presented both their local national identity cards and Mozambican voters’ cards at the polling stations.
Marcial Macome, spokesperson for Mozambique’s main opposition party, RENAMO, said that his party is aware of these developments involving Zimbabweans and does not accept the election process.
In response, ZANU PF Director of Information Farai Marapira denied any allegations of his party’s involvement in rigging the Mozambican elections. He said:

FRELIMO, which has governed Mozambique since the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975, has maintained a close relationship with ZANU PF.
During Zimbabwe’s war of independence against European settlers, FRELIMO permitted Zimbabwean freedom fighters to establish military camps in Mozambique, from which guerrillas launched their attacks.
Zimbabwean opposition politician Job Sikhala said that by sending its supporters to vote in Mozambique’s general elections, ZANU PF has become a security threat in the SADC region. He posted on X:

Upon returning to South Africa in 1990, he became the first labour minister under Nelson Mandela and played a part in shaping post-apartheid labour laws.
Known for his principled stance and openness to debate, he gained public affection for his humble attire and engaging personality.
Mboweni served as governor for ten years and was recognized for successfully controlling inflation, earning accolades like “Central Bank Governor of the Year.”
After his tenure at the Reserve Bank, he worked with Goldman Sachs as an international adviser.
As finance minister from 2018 to 2021, he played a crucial role in stabilizing the economy, despite earlier expressing a desire for new leadership.

Cameroon Bans Media Coverage Regarding President Biya’s Health

Mozambicans are voting for a new president in an election this Wednesday that could extend the ruling party’s 49 years in power since the southern African nation gained independence from Portugal in 1975. 
Approximately 17 million of Mozambique’s 32 million population are eligible to participate in the elections, which will include parliamentary and provincial votes across 11 provinces.
Current President Filipe Nyusi, 65, of the governing Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) party, will step down after eight years in office.
He may be the last of Frelimo’s founders who fought in the liberation war, a conflict that resulted in significant loss of life.
Many young Mozambicans are expressing frustration with the existing system, seeking more job opportunities and security amid high poverty levels and ongoing armed conflict in the north.
Four candidates have been approved for the presidency: Daniel Chapo (47), Ossufo Momade (63), Venancio Mondlane (50), and Lutero Simango (64).
Chapo is viewed as a favourite to win the elections due to the advantages of Frelimo’s incumbency. Although he only entered politics in 2011, he quickly became Frelimo’s president in May 2024 after serving as a provincial governor in Inhambane. Chapo claims his experience gives him an edge over competitors.
During the official six-week campaign, which ended on Sunday, he distanced himself from Frelimo’s corruption issues and promised to restore peace in Cabo Delgado, a region affected by armed conflict. 
He also travelled to South Africa to engage with the significant number of Mozambicans living there who can vote abroad and met with leaders of the African National Congress (ANC), viewing them as historical allies.
However, many voters, particularly the youth, struggle to dissociate Chapo from the corruption and decay associated with Frelimo’s nearly 50 years in power.
In some areas, Frelimo members face hostility during campaigns, and while the party is expected to win, there are concerns about electoral fraud, with opposition parties alleging the presence of “ghost” voters on the electoral roll.
Momade is the leader of the opposition Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), which holds only 60 of the 250 parliamentary seats and a few of the 65 municipalities.
Unlike Daniel Chapo, Momade is part of the old guard, having fought in the Mozambican civil war (1977-1992) against Frelimo and later transitioning Renamo into a political party.
Despite his age, Momade remains popular among Renamo supporters, particularly in the northern Nampula region, where he is recognized for signing peace accords that ended the Renamo rebellion in 2019.
He ran for the presidency in the 2019 elections but received only 21% of the vote, compared to President Nyusi’s 73%.
Momade contested the election results, claiming they were fraudulent, a view echoed by European Union observers.
Renamo officials criticized the municipal elections in October 2023, where Frelimo won nearly all locations.
Mondlane, nicknamed VM7, has gained a strong following among young Mozambicans, who make up two-thirds of the population.
A former deputy in the Mozambican House of Assembly, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Maputo in 2023 but left Renamo when Ossufo Momade did not step down.
Now running as an independent, Mondlane is supported by the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), a group of nine political parties.
Many young voters express on social media that only Mondlane can bring about meaningful change. 
However, the enthusiasm surrounding him raises concerns among analysts about potential post-electoral violence, which has been common in Mozambique.
Like his competitors, Mondlane has pledged to end violence in Cabo Delgado, create jobs, and improve the healthcare system.
Simango leads Mozambique’s third-largest party, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM).
His election promises focused on creating jobs for young people by establishing factories to process natural resources, such as timber, within the country rather than exporting them.
Vote counting will begin immediately after the polls close on Wednesday, with partial results announced as they are compiled.
The National Election Commission is set to release official tallies within 15 days. Following this, contesting parties may file objections with the Constitutional Council, which will evaluate their validity.

Mozambicans Vote For New President

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has reportedly failed to rein in Gauteng’s provincial chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi.
Mbalula sought to charge Lesufi, who also serves as the province’s premier, for allegedly bringing the organisation into disrepute.
He summoned Lesufi to Luthuli House on Monday to discuss his remarks regarding the Government of National Unity (GNU), but the attempt at discipline faltered as Mbalula faced tough questions on the matter himself.
Lesufi has been embroiled in multiple public disputes, including an exchange with the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Helen Zille, who accused him of undermining the GNU.
The GNU is an ANC-led coalition that includes the DA, but its implementation has struggled in Gauteng and some of the province’s metros.
Mbalula reportedly supported the idea that Lesufi should be reprimanded for his comments, particularly in response to Zille on X, where he asserted that the ANC would not be dictated to by the DA. Lesufi wrote on X:

Veteran South African gospel artist Solomon Molokoane, known as Solly Moholo, has passed away at the age of 65.
His management confirmed his death, saying the music icon passed on 02 October 2024 whilst in hospital.
The award-winning musician had been hospitalised for several weeks after falling ill during a music tour in Botswana last month.
Rising to fame in the early 2000s, Moholo became a prominent figure in South African traditional gospel music.
Last month, Moholo’s team announced that he had suffered a stroke and was undergoing multiple organ failure.
His family then launched a public appeal for funds to help with his medical expenses.
Moholo was celebrated for hits like “Die poppe sal dans,” “Ka letsatsi labofelo,” and “Tsoha Jonase.” 
Fellow gospel artists, friends, and fans have honoured his memory on social media with tributes to the late star.
The public broadcaster SABC said: “He has left an indelible mark in the industry with his soulful gospel music [and] energetic live performances”.

Radio, TV Stations In Zambia To Go Off-Air Overnight Every Day Due To Load Shedding

The case involving two black women, Maria Makgato, 45, and Lucia Ndlovu, 34, who were allegedly shot and fed to pigs by a white farmer and two of his workers, has sparked outrage in South Africa.
Makgato, a South African national, and her Zimbabwean friend Ndlovu were reportedly looking for food on a farm near Polokwane in Limpopo province when they were shot dead in August.
Their bodies were allegedly disposed of in an attempt to eliminate evidence. A court is set to decide whether to grant bail to the farm owner, Zachariah Johannes Olivier, 60, and his employees, Adrian de Wet, 19, and William Musora, 50, as they await their murder trial.
The three men have not yet entered a plea in court, which will occur when the trial begins at a later date. 
Protests have taken place outside the court, with demonstrators calling for the suspects to be denied bail.
Walter Mathole, Makgato’s brother, told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0jwq58z7vgo">BBC</a> that the incident has heightened racial tensions between black and white communities in South Africa, particularly in rural areas, despite the end of apartheid 30 years ago.
The three men in court in Polokwane face charges of attempted murder for shooting at Ndlovu’s husband, Mabutho Ncube, who was with the women at the farm, as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm. 
Ncube survived the attack on August 17 by crawling away and calling for medical help. He reported the incident to the police, who later found the decomposing bodies of his wife and Makgato in the pigsty.
Mathole recounted that he was with the officers when he encountered a horrifying scene inside the pig enclosure: his sister’s body, which had been partially consumed by the animals.
The group had gone to the farm seeking edible food from expired produce, which was sometimes left for the animals.
Makgato’s family is devastated by her killing, particularly her four sons, who range in age from five to 22 years old. Ranti Makgato, the oldest of her sons, told BBC:

The opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party called for the farm to be shut down, stating that it cannot allow products from the farm to continue being sold due to the danger they pose to consumers following the discovery of the bodies.
Recent incidents have heightened racial tensions, including the arrest of a farmer and his security guard in Mpumalanga for the alleged murder of two men accused of sheep theft.
The bodies were burned beyond recognition, and the accused remain in custody while DNA analysis is conducted.
Another case involves a 70-year-old white farmer, Christoffel Stoman, who is accused of driving over a six-year-old boy who allegedly stole an orange from his farm. The boy’s mother witnessed the incident. 
Stoman faces charges of attempted murder and reckless driving, with the National Prosecuting Authority opposing his bail application.
Two political parties – the African Transformation Movement and the Pan Africanist Congress – are calling for the expropriation of Stoman’s farm following this incident.

A 56-year-old South African immigration officer at the Beitbridge Port of Entry in Musina, Limpopo, has been arrested for allegedly accepting bribes from foreign nationals entering the country illegally.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the arrest, saying six illegal foreigners were also arrested during the police operation.
The officer was arrested during a sting operation conducted by Operation Vala Umgodi on the morning of September 29.
Upon investigation, the officer was found with R3,100 and six passports belonging to foreign nationals.
The owners of the passports were located on buses arriving from Malawi, awaiting processing.
The arrested foreigners, aged between 27 and 43, failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding their passports and the cash found with the officer.
The Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit was notified, and the money and passports were seized as evidence.
Both the immigration officer and the six foreigners were scheduled to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on September 30.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Samuel Manala commended the police for the arrests.

Foreign truck drivers employed by South African freight companies must have valid work permits. Without these permits, insurance companies are not legally required to cover claims from accidents.
This was said by Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association, during an interview on Good Morning Cape Town.
He was answering the question of whether or not a foreign national from a neighbouring country would need to have a work permit to work as a driver for a South African company even if the driver has a SADC licence that is recognised in the country.
Kelly said it is illegal for foreigners to work in South Africa without the correct visa or permit, and equally illegal for companies to employ them without the necessary documentation. According to Kelly, freight drivers transporting goods between countries must be legally employed by the company registered in their home country.
For instance, a driver carrying freight from South Africa to Namibia must be employed by a South African company.
The driver can only enter the other country if it is part of their job and specified in their employment contract.
Drivers have a set number of days, depending on the country, to pick up the load and return to South Africa.
According to Kelly, SADC licenses are recognised in South Africa under the National Road Traffic Act.
He said foreign nationals on tourist visas can drive rented or their own vehicles if they reside in neighbouring countries.
Kelly added that those employed by companies outside South Africa are authorised to drive vehicles used for transporting goods into and out of South Africa.

"No Work Permit, No Insurance," For Foreign Truck Drivers In South Africa

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, South Africa, has sentenced three illegal Zimbabwean nationals—Edison Ngamiko, Amos Hassan Masiya, and Edron Panashe Chisanako—to life imprisonment for the murder of two girls in Olievenhoutbosch.
As reported by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/three-illegal-zimbabwean-nationals-sentenced-for-killing-two-girls-after-they-refused-to-sleep-with-them-09eea1b7-a098-4d97-a043-d4205d63b240">IOL</a>, each received two life terms for murder, along with 10 years for attempted murder and 12 months for being in the country illegally.
The incident occurred when the three men met the girls, aged 15, 16, and 23, at Mashanganeng Tavern on February 17, 2023, according to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. Said Mahanjana:

The girls requested money from the trio to purchase alcohol, and the men initially provided them with R40. When the girls asked for an additional R20 to pay a male companion who was going to accompany them home, the accused complied, bringing the total amount given to R60.
</blockquote>
Mahanjana said later that night, as the girls were leaving the tavern, the men followed them to Mamello Street.
Chisanako demanded sexual favours from the 15-year-old girl, who refused, prompting the 16-year-old to reprimand him.
In response, Chisanako pulled out a gun and shot the 16-year-old in the neck, and she collapsed. Said the NPA spokesperson:

He then shot the other two girls multiple times, leading to their deaths at the scene. A shot fired during the chaos hit Ngamiko accidentally and then upon realising that the 16-year-old was still alive, Ngamiko attempted to finish the job, but the firearm had run out of bullets, thereafter they fled the scene.

The 16-year-old girl crawled home and reported the shooting. Police later found the bodies of the two girls while patrolling the area at night.
An investigation led to the arrest of Ngamiko three days later while he was being treated for a gunshot wound.
Masiya was arrested on unrelated charges on October 9, 2023, and subsequently connected to the murders. He identified Chisanako, who was arrested the following day.
During the trial, all three pleaded not guilty; Ngamiko and Masiya acknowledged the incident but blamed Chisanako, who denied being present.
During sentencing, the defence requested leniency from the court, arguing that the defendant had family responsibilities in Zimbabwe.
However, the prosecution argued that the men showed no remorse and were connected to other violent crimes, including robbery and housebreaking.

The police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and deployed detectives and forensic experts to gather evidence.
South Africa has a high murder rate, with over 12,734 homicides recorded in the first half of this year alone.
Authorities are mobilising resources to address the violence and apprehend those responsible for these brutal killings.
Mass shootings have become increasingly prevalent in recent years, often targeting individuals in their own homes.
In April 2023, ten members of the same family, including seven women and a 13-year-old boy, were killed in a mass shooting at their residence in neighbouring KwaZulu-Natal province.

A British couple’s dream holiday in Zambia turned dangerous when a hippo attacked their canoe on the Kafue River, flipping them into the water.
As reported by <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c869jj5dy4qo">BBC</a>, Cherry and wife Shirley, from Warwickshire, were in the third week of their dream trip when disaster struck on the Kafue River.
Sixty-three-year-old Cherry was dragged underwater and seriously injured before being tossed into the air by the animal.
Quick action by a local hospital helped save his life, as he sustained significant injuries to his leg, abdomen, and shoulder.
Cherry, an experienced canoeist, recalled that he quickly realized he had dislocated his shoulder, leaving him unable to swim to safety.
As he struggled in the water, he was grabbed by the hippo and dragged underwater.
Fearing for his life, Cherry thought, “Oh no, what a way to go… I’m not ready to die,” believing he wouldn’t survive the attack.
He later found himself sitting in shallow water on the bank, but the hippo grabbed him again. He told the BBC:

He said he recalled his wife calling for him as “friendly arms” pulled him from the water and placed him on a motorboat back to camp.
Shirley Cherry said she had managed to swim to the riverbank, meaning the hippo went for her husband.
“I saw him surface, then he was thrown in the air,” she said, adding that if the hippo had attacked her, the outcome might have been fatal.
Cherry sustained a 10-inch wound to his abdomen, a thigh injury, and a dislocated shoulder. Hospital staff in Johannesburg indicated that had his wounds been deeper, he might not have survived, noting they had never encountered a hippo attack survivor before.
After seven operations over two weeks, Cherry credited the initial treatment at Mtendere Mission Hospital with saving his life and is now raising funds for the hospital through a Just Giving page.
He said he appreciated the group had been in the hippo’s natural habitat and subsequently had learnt his attacker was a protective female with a calf.

British Tourist Recounts Near-Death Experience With Hippo In Zambia

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has suspended three Constitutional Court judges with immediate effect, his office announced on Monday.
The suspended judges are Justice Anne Sitali, Justice Mungeni Mulenga, and Justice Palan Mulonda, all of whom were appointed by Hichilema’s predecessor, Edgar Lungu.
In a statement released by State House spokesperson Clayson Hamasaka on Monday evening, the details of the suspension were outlined as follows:

President Hakainde Hichilema has with immediate effect, acting on the recommendation in the report presented to him by the Judicial Complaints Commission suspended three (3) Judges of the Constitutional Court of Zambia.
The suspended Judges include; Justice Anne Sitali, Justice Mungeni Mulenga and Justice Palan Mulonda.
The suspension of the three is in exercise of the powers vested in the President in Article 144 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia.

The move may increase scrutiny of Zambia’s democracy. Last month, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern over multiple allegations regarding the arbitrary arrests of opposition leaders.
These arrests were on charges that included unlawful assembly and espionage. In response, the government rejected these allegations.
Zambian politicial commentator, Sishuwa Sishuwa, suggested that the suspension of the three judges is motivated by four partisan considerations on the part of President Hichilema. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Sishuwa wrote:

The first is revenge. The three judges who have been suspended are the ones who ruled against Hichilema in the 2016 petition that he brought against the re-election of then President Lungu following that year’s presidential election.
At the time, Hichilema was righty aggrieved that the three judges reversed under very strange circumstances the judgement that the full bench of five justices had made a few days earlier and, in so doing, terminated the hearing of his petition on account of what they called lapse of time.
Disappointed with their conduct, Hichilema accused the three judges who threw out his petition of “being corrupt and under President Edgar Lungu’s control”.
Their suspension constitutes a form of payback punishment for their conduct over that 2016 case.

Sishuwa said the second motivation for the suspension of the three judges appears to be the eligibility case involving Edgar Lungu, whom Hichilema is determined to exclude from running in the 2026 election based on the real fear that the former president might defeat him.
She argued that by suspending the three judges who are all likely to rule that Lungu is eligible to run again, as per their three previous rulings on the matter, Hichilema is strategically reducing the total number of judges on the ConCourt bench to 8.
This 8 would consist of a majority of five that are likely to rule against Lungu and the remaining three judges who, unless they abandon their 2021 judgement, will constitute a minority.
The third motivation behind the suspension and imminent removal of the three judges, according to Sishuwa, is the desire to rig the ConCourt in favour of the president in the event of a disputed 2026 election. 
The constitutional court has the final say on all matters relating to the interpretation of Zambia’s Constitution, including the election of the president.
Sishuwa said the fourth and final motivation is to send a warning to other judges about what awaits them should they dare to rule against Hichilema.

Zambian President Hichilema Suspends Three Constitutional Court Judges

Germany and Kenya have reached an agreement to enable 250,000 semi-skilled and skilled Kenyans to work in Europe’s biggest economy. As part of the deal, Germany will ease some of its immigration laws. 
Semi-skilled people include buss drivers, while skilled people include teachers, nurses, and doctors. 
The deal was signed in Berlin by Kenya’s President William Ruto and Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz this month. It is aimed at addressing a shortage of skilled labour in Germany and a shortage of jobs in Kenya.
Here are some of the things agreed in the deal:

<li>Kenyans will get long-term visas to study or get vocational training in Germany. Some bus drivers, for example are now receiving training in Germany </li>
<li>Some specific professions will also get relaxed migration requirements. For example, IT specialists from Kenya will be allowed to enter and work in Germany, even if they do not have formal qualifications.</li>
<li>On the expiry of the long-stay visa, Kenyans may receive a temporary residence permit for study purposes in Germany for up to two years</li>
<li>The temporary residence permit may be extended if the purpose of residence has not yet been achieved but is achievable within a “reasonable” period</li>
<li>Kenyans in Germany illegally will have to return to Kenya and efforts made to reduce illegal immigration</li>
</ul>
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) supports the deal saying it will increase access to decent foreign jobs for Kenyan workers in Germany. 
Said ILO in a statement before the signing:

“This agreement is designed to address the labour market needs of both countries, providing a structured framework for the migration of skilled workers. It includes mechanisms to protect the rights and welfare of Kenyan migrant workers in Germany, ensuring safe, orderly, and productive migration.”

Kenya’s unemployment rate is about 10%, with the majority of the unemployed being the youth.
There have been some criticism in Kenya that the deal would result in brain drain. At a joint press conference in Berlin, Ruto said about the concerns:

“I want to assure you that we have skills, we have developed a huge human capital. As you may be aware, Kenya is a young country.
We have a huge young population that cannot only satisfy our industrialisation agenda in Kenya but also here in Germany. In fact, it will provide an avenue for us to tap the skills here,”

Germany and Kenya made a deal for 250,000 Kenyans to work in Germany. Germany will make it easier for them to come. Some will get to study or train there. IT specialists and other skilled workers can come even without formal qualifications. The deal will help both countries - Germany needs workers and Kenya needs jobs. Germany To Ease Migration Laws For 250,000 Kenyans, In Labour Deal

Julius Malema led EFF has said that it is not sorrowful following the death of veteran ANC politician and minister, Pravin Gordhan. <a href="https://x.com/EFFSouthAfrica/status/1834502155421487614">In a statement released on X</a> today, EFF described Gordhan as “the embodiment of greed, corruption, and elitism”.
Gordhan died today, 13 September at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg after being admitted on a cancer diagnosis a few days earlier.
Said the EFF Statement in part:

Gordhan was the embodiment of greed, corruption, and elitism. His tenure as Minister of Public Enterprises was a period of unparalleled disaster for every state-owned enterprise he touched. Under his leadership, Eskom became a shadow of its former self, plunging this country into a permanent state of load-shedding, while blackouts shattered livelihoods and businesses across the nation. Transnet, which once facilitated the efficient movement of goods, is now in ruins, barely able to function. Denel, a proud defence company, was brought to its knees, while SAA, our national airline, was sold off in a corrupt deal that reeks of treason.
</blockquote>
Some quarters have criticised the EFF for not being considerate of the family and memory of Gordhan saying it is unAfrican to speak ill of the dead.
Other have praised EFF for supposedly telling things as they are and sticking to its mantra of fighting corruption by politicians.
Gordhan held various cabinet minister posts in South Africa, most notably the finance minister post.

The EFF, led by Julius Malema, said they are not sad about the death of Pravin Gordhan, calling him greedy and corrupt. They said he made state-owned companies fail and caused problems for the country. Some people criticized the EFF for speaking badly about someone who has passed away, while others praised them for fighting against corruption. Gordhan was a veteran ANC politician and held important positions in the government, like finance minister. He died from cancer in Johannesburg.

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has accused unnamed conspirators of organising the 2008 xenophobia in South Africa. He said the xenophobia was systematically organised to drive Zimbabweans back home to vote Mugabe out of power.
Speaking during a QnA session at a UNISA event, Mbeki said South Africans living in Alexandria (where the xenophobic attacks started) have a long history of co-existing peacefully with other Africans and could not have started it.
Mbeki said his government, when he was president,  had the evidence of meetings by the conspirators but that he had not declassified it when he had the chance.

Robert Mugabe narrowly lost the election to Morgan Tsvangirayi even as the results were announced very late causing speculation that the margin of loss was wider. Emmerson Mnangagwa admitted recently that Mugabe was ready to handover power to the opposition after the loss.
A presidential run-off election announced as Tsvangirayi was said to have failed to get a decisive win. In the run-up to the run-off election Zanu PF unleashed a wave of violence that resulted in the deaths of several hundred MDC supporters, and ultimately Tsvangirayi pulling out of the election.
The stalemate was mediated by Mbeki himself, who ushered in a negotiated GNU, with Mugabe as the ultimate leader.

Thabo Mbeki says people planned xenophobic attacks in South Africa in 2008 to force Zimbabweans to vote against Mugabe. He believes these attacks were organized by unnamed people for political gain. Mbeki saw evidence of meetings where the plan was made, but he did not share it at the time. The attacks pushed Zimbabweans to go back home to vote in an election where Mugabe lost. A peace deal was later made with Mugabe still in power.
