Is Zimbabwe’s War of Liberation One Of The Biggest Frauds In Human History ?

by Engineer Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi

The Zimbabwe War of Liberation is often heralded as a noble struggle against colonial oppression, yet many now argue that it represents one of the biggest frauds in human history. The irony of it all is striking, the very nation that Zimbabweans fought against, the United Kingdom, has become home to over four million of those who fled the post-colonial regime. This phenomenon raises questions about the legitimacy of the liberation movement and the motives of our leaders.

At the heart of the liberation narrative are figures like Robert Mugabe, who promised to free the masses from the grip of colonial rule. However, the decades following independence in 1980 have revealed a troubling reality. The so-called freedom fighters, rather than uplifting the people, have entrenched themselves in power, exhibiting many of the same traits as their colonial predecessors. The ruling elite now live lavish lifestyles, while ordinary Zimbabweans grapple with poverty, unemployment and political repression.

This stark contrast is perhaps best illustrated by the migration patterns of Zimbabweans. Many have sought refuge in the UK, where they often find better opportunities and a semblance of stability. Ironically, the children and grandchildren of these so-called liberators now hold British passports, a symbol of their paradoxical existence. They have escaped the very oppression their forebears claimed to have fought against, yet they continue to profess a commitment to the ideals of liberation.

Now the question arises, how can these leaders, who have benefited from their positions of power, justify their actions while insulting those who dissent? The rhetoric of liberation has been co-opted to silence criticism, with dissenters often vilified as traitors or enemies of the state, specifically mutengesi. This has created a climate of fear and repression, where the masses are left feeling betrayed by the very people they once trusted to lead them to freedom.

Furthermore, the economic situation in Zimbabwe has deteriorated dramatically, with hyperinflation and widespread corruption becoming the norm. The once-promising nation has descended into chaos, leading many to conclude that the liberation struggle was not a genuine fight for freedom, but rather a power grab by a new elite. The leaders who once wielded the banner of liberation have turned into oppressors, using their positions to enrich themselves while the majority suffer.

The complexities of identity and belonging complicate the narrative further. Zimbabweans in the UK often grapple with their dual identity, as descendants of freedom fighters and as individuals who have sought refuge from an oppressive regime. This duality raises uncomfortable questions about loyalty and the true meaning of liberation. If the liberators have become the oppressors, what does that say about the ideals they professed to uphold?

The legacy of the Zimbabwe War of Liberation is fraught with contradictions. What was once seen as a monumental victory against colonialism has devolved into a situation that many view as a betrayal. The migration of Zimbabweans to the UK underscores the failure of the liberation movement to deliver on its promises. What will the future generations SAY?

The real problem is there was never really any independence, stronger global organisations like te UN have always been a huge factor in the history of nations. This nation and most of other African countries were test grounds for all we are seeing in the West.

What an enormous postbag. Listen comrades, brothers, shamwaris. I recently watched an old Thames Television documentary filmed in 61 or 63. Many teenagers are interviewed from St. Ignatius & a european school. It opened my eyes as to how much respect both sets of students held for the other race well before independence. Their deep understanding of what was needed to build the country into a successful multi racial democracy. Thos kids, wise heads on young shoulders should have been allowed to work together to make Zimbabwe great allowing our country to be the best country on this huge continent. All that was needed was time, understanding, compassion & equality. I fully believe given time, without communist intervention...whatever Russia/China said all they wanted was our mineral wealth...Zimbabwe would have remained to jewel in Africa's crown & the bread provider to Southern Africa.

Its now too late because Ian Smith warned us that these monkeys would take everything from us and destroy the economy. We did not listen to the wisehis words. In Borrowdale there are certain pleases owned by our liberators which are fenced and guarded 24 hours and you cant go there if you are not known and invited. You are not allowed to pass through if you know noone there. I always feel pained when I look at my cousin's grave. He come back in 1979 and was housed at Zengeza holding camp until he was intergrated in the national army .He was involved in an car accident while on military duty in 2001 and discharged from the army in 2008.In 2010 he died of his injuries. He was not even declare a provincial hero and he is laying in a nondescript grave in his rural home. It is only those with strong connection to Zanu pf who are benefitting but it will not last. What is only required is a match stick to ignite a proper revolution which will tatol free the people of Zimbabwe.

Knowledge of things work is power. If your relative died as a confirmed war vet then there are people in yor family who slept on duty. I think it's not fair to heap all the blame on the government. Let's all act accordingly.
-_- · 2 months ago
Problem iripo ndeyekuti vanhu vatema vane dependency syndrome. You were liberated nearly 45 years ago,and we are still here blaming whitey for some things which we failed to fix by ourselves. This engineer guy clearly doesn't know that the leaders are doing exactly what leaders do.He on the other hand is definitely not doing what engineers do. Engineers apply Science to generate solutions to a problem. We have problems that relate to power outages,I don't expect Mr Mnangagwa to find a solution to that. All major cities simply dump sewers into rivers there is not treatment going on because our engineers lack the insight to find solutions. They are busy blaming our leaders.
chii chacho · 2 months ago
Engineers are ther to come up with solutions to our problems, while leadership is there to come up with policies which ensures accountability, transparency and sustainability. without thz policies an engineer becomes irrelevant. we got high temperatures which are good enuf for solar energy, tonnes of lithium to mek solar batteries and loads of platinum that can be beneficiated all to mek Zim a big forex earner .. semaengineer tozviziva hazvitombodi rocket science, but the policies are just not oriented for economic development.. imagine a Chinese guy coming and eating away all the Shurugwi mountains. for all the environmental damage the guy leaves no new road, school , hospital, or any other simple community development initiative. lyk I said it's leadership that determine policies which in turn bring about accountability, transparency and in turn sustainability

It seems we are not all comprehending why the liberation struggle was waged. This is why there was orientation lessons conducted during the struggle. However today the economy is our hands we deposit our wealth in those developed countries for them to use our money to exploit our natural resources back home. We can talk more and more but if we don't have orientation lessons today we are going nowhere. Nation building is important to any country. Handei mberi tione let's stop blame game and opposing just for the sake of opposing.

As I see it cde, Smith was a war vet of British, so because of his crucial role he played in WW2, he felt like he was liable to own Zim as a gratuity from Britain hence UDI declaration, So Smith was never in good books with Britain, infact he saw Zimbabwe as a better country than Britain, So the Britts were against it all system but Smith is chose to go it alone, They too fought him alongside our liberators, hence he was slapped with sanctions too, So there were good whites and bad ones like those in pursuit of smiths ideology, we too had such in wars of liberation and they were guys that were americanised that were preferred by Smith and we had Marxism, Russian ideology of communism to ensure fairness to communities which is what the Britts is are doing now accommodating us in the affairs of their economies that been fair as I see it That's the reason why we have this relatively different mode growing in recent time to have Britts coming to Zim and Zim going to the Brit

One major problem Zimbabwe has been facing is that we can't generate enough electricity.I don't see how that has got anything to do with Independence. We have been given access to technology which can help us get there courtesy of our asian brothers, the challenge is our engineers are to busy being "analytically minded" as you put it instead of finding ways to increase our energy production. Another area that needs our engineers to start finding solutions is maybe design and implementation of our own trains,as well as decent waste water treatment plants. Did you know all that waste water that is being dumped into Chivero can be used to generate biogas and also produce Nitrate based fertilizer?I guess that doesn't matter we prefer our Rivers and dams all full of sewage.I have never had of an engineer talking about how Zimbabwe will be able to sustain the electric cars that are being touted by government. There is a tonne of challenges that require our Zimbabwean engineers to be engineers not political analysts. We still have suburbs that get flooded each time it rains and our engineers are busy talking about independence that occured almost 45 years ago.
Anonymous · 2 months ago
@Beer Those are all infrastructural issues that were given at independence. What has been done since? Our Asian brothers have been working on Morton Jaffrey since 2011. What has been done there? In infrastructural terms, engineers receive instructions to fix things. Fixing things on your own for government will just make you go broke, because they will claim ownership and pay you nothing.
