Zimbabweans Clash On X Over ZANU PF Rule Vs. Ian Smith's Rhodesia

A heated debate has unfolded on X (formerly Twitter) among Zimbabweans, as many have drawn comparisons between the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the infamous Ian Smith-led Rhodesian regime.

Some argue that despite Rhodesia’s deeply entrenched white supremacy, the Ian Smith administration was more efficient and less corrupt than the current ZANU PF-led government.

These critics point out that, even under international sanctions following Rhodesia’s illegal declaration of independence, Smith’s regime invested heavily in infrastructure, leaving behind well-developed roads, hospitals, and schools.

In contrast, they claim that much of this infrastructure has deteriorated under the so-called “New Dispensation.”

However, there are strong voices on the other side, staunchly opposing any romanticization of Rhodesia.

ZANU PF chief whip and Gutu South MP, Pupurai Togarepi, has even called for legislation to criminalise celebrations of Rhodesia.

Amidst the controversy, former CCC MP Fadzayi Mahere, known for her progressive views, has refrained from directly engaging in the debate.

Yet, she did share a powerful statement on X, saying thousands of Zimbabweans who fought for the country’s liberation did not do so for the ZANU PF elite to merely replace the colonial elite.

Instead, they fought for the collective empowerment of all Zimbabweans, to ensure the fruits of independence were shared by the people. She wrote:

There is a reason why our esteemed forebears called it a War of Liberation and not a War of Decolonisation. The guiding principle was to free the masses from all forms of repression and not simply to move them from Jail A to Jail B. It is not liberation if one violent oppressor is replaced by another.

Liberation means one man, one vote – not stolen elections.

Liberation means freedom from state-sponsored violence – not replacing a violent Rhodesian Special Branch with your own violent police force.

Liberation means gutsaruzhinji (everyone must eat) – not replacing colonial elites who eat alone with Zanu PF elites who eat alone.

Liberation means respecting the rights and liberties of every citizen – not replacing the repressive Law and Order Maintenance Act with your own repressive POSA or MOPA.

Liberation means ensuring every person has a decent life and equal access to freedom, fairness and opportunity.

The current state of affairs is a slap in the face to our true heroes who fought and lost their lives for the dream of a better Zimbabwe.

You may not respect us, but can you at least respect those who died to destroy what you now represent? It’s a mess. We need new leaders.

The mental gymnastics being demonstrated here is astounding...Stockholm's syndrome at it's finest....The sanctions imposed on Smith were laughable and only existed on paper ....There is credible evidence that the Americans and British continued to trade with Rhodesia even after implementing their so called stringent sanctions...Henry Kissinger admitted as much so the myth of sanctions has to be buried immediately... Smith's regime has to be relegated to the dustbins of history alongside his political godfather Adolf Hitler....Imagine being so lazy you wish for the return of one of the most repressive regimes known to men...The Rhodesians did not even have the decency to pay for all the war debts they accumulated by maiming helpless Africans in such callous fashion...Imagine saddling a newly independent nation with war debts that were in the millions of pounds.... My grandparents were robbed of both their lives and their chance to accumulate generational wealth because of Smith's totalitarian actions and for that I will never forgive.... The Rhodesian economic miracle only existed in the plushy suburbs and the farm owners while the majority of the population lived in derelict "flats" meant to disrupt the family fabric....Black entrepreneurship was frowned upon by the alleged savior Smith so everyone had to make do with a pittance of a salary....Just check the statistics of the average yearly income of a black family during the Smith regime and now and then come back to me.... This blatant revisionism is disingenuous and meant to stir up anger in those that are intellectually challenged....Fadzi is being disingenuous and being used as a conduit for her racist overlords.... No one is arguing the the colonialists were brutal and repressive but zanu has used Smith tactics on its own ppl. The fact that there is even a comparison shows how abysmally they have failed. No road no water no currency yet corruption mad mismanagement thrives. Literal looting. No one wants Smith back but this current brutal oppressor has earn his dispcable place next to Smith in the dustbin

People especially those that have a huge entitlement complex like the vocal minority that exist in the nether regions of X have a tendency to put everything into hyperbole... The only reason this comparison is occuring is because of disillusionment on the part of the entitled folks on X...Who in their right mind would suggest that a white minority government that subjugated black people is better than a majority black government.... Sometimes I wish people would go to places where such systems are in place for example Qatar or any of the theocratic regimes of the Gulf state and see how they treat the people they deem of a lesser gene... The problems you have stated there are part and parcel of being a thirty world country that was a victim of both slave trade and colonialism...Europe underdeveloped Africa in such a way that it may take close to a millennium to undo all the damage they did....Can you not see all the massive projects being undertaken to address those issues or you just enjoy taking shots at ZANU PF... You are funny. Massive projects? Please list them. Hundreds of years to undo good infrastructure and a valued currency. It didn't take as long as you believe. Please, lets be serious.

From my point of view, Smith regime was much better than current ruling party . let's our colonial legacy compared to what we did we blacks. Zanu has been in power for many years without something which is tangible like infrastructure, town and cities. people are now tired of unresolved problem like corruption , no jobs for all , destroyed education sector , too low wages etc

Smith had advantage of the because not all of us were that educated and because he had a bottle neck restriction on education most of our grand fathers fathers mothers cared less and vowed to become nothing but factory labourer farm labourers and peasantry So he's had little management and attacks from natives whereas he in today's world everyone can text on a fon and we'll educated and very young outspoken to speak his mind our leaders are having torrid times just the way you can't control your kid over cellphones, computer and internet So the present government is has done a lot more and investment in in the head has actually more value than anything infrastructural and cause nature is unpredictable anytime an earthquake or cyclone of can raze down such development as but can't raze down your intellect and skill

HI GUYS . ITS A PITY THAT NARRATORS OF THESE COMPARISONS WERE NEVER AND WILL NEVER BE WITNESSES IN FLESH ON WHAT TRANSPIRED DURING THE RACIST MINORITY REPRESSIVE SETTLER MINORITY REGIME. SMITH HAD A MEGRE 4MILLION BLACKS TO TOY AROUND WITH. ECONOMIC CORRIDORS WERE SHUT TO BLACKS ONLY SELECTED AVENUES WERE OPEN TO BLACKS. THE TEACHING PROFESSION POLICE AND ARMY WERE THE FEW FIELDS BLACKS COULD PERSUE. ITS UNFORTUNATE THAT REACTIONARY FORCES TEND TO FORGET THE SUBJUGATION WE WENT THROUGH. TODAY BLACKS ARE FREE TO PERSUE ANY CAREER OF THEIR CHOCE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM AS LONG AS THEY QUALIFY. GETTING A RHODESIAN PASSPORT WAS UNHEARD OF INFACT IT WAS UNTHINKABLE. TODAY YOU FLY ANYWHERE AT WILL. YOU BUILD ANYWHERE YOU SELL ANYWHERE YOU MOVE ANYWHERE WITHOUT ANY HINDERANCE. FIRST STREET WAS A WHITE ZONE .DOES MAHERE KNOW THAT WHERE SHE RESIDES TODAY WAS A FORBIDEN PLACE FOR BLACKS. ONLY MAIDS AND GARDEN BOYS COULD WALK IN THOSE PLACES. COMPARING SMITH WITH ZANUPF IS LIKE COMPARING GOD WITH SATAN. EVEN THE ISRAELI TURNED AGAINST MOSES ITS COMMON. MOST BLACKS GREW UP IN DRY AREAS BUT BECAUSE OF THE LAND THEY ARE PROUD OWNERS OF GOOD FERTILE LAND THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY STOLEN BY BOERS. YOU FAIL TO UNDERSTAND OUR PREDICAMENT BECAUSE YOU ARE PART AND PARCEL TO PROMOTERS OF THE ILLEGAL SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON ZIMBABWE. YOU TURN A BLIND EYE ON ISSUES THAT YOU THE OPPOSITION OCHESTRATED . HYPOCRITES ARE IN OUR MIDST. IF YOU SWIM WITH THE TIDE THERE'S NO PROBLEM BUT IF YOU GO AGAINST THE TIDE YOU WILL ENCOUNTER LOGS . SMITH WAS EVEN MORE CORRUPT THAN YOU MIGHT IMAGINE. HE RULED FOR 15 YEARS BUSTING SANCTIONS. DO YOU THINK ALL THE JAPANESE CARS IN RHODESIA CAME IN FOR FREE. THE WAR IN RHODESIA WAS COSTING 1 MILLION DOLLARS A DAY AND WHO DO YOU THINK WAS FINANCING THAT. THINK. DO YOU REALLY THINK THE WEST WANTED A BKACK TAKEOVER.

Ian Smith was a dictator, cruel and racist being who hated Blacks to the core of his heart...and never wanted to see Black prosperity
🤦🏽‍♂️ · 2 months ago
Agreed...however the whites had a well orchestrated system in place that invested heavily in the welfare yemushandi through world class skills development, decent housing and amenities and a respectable pension for the average labourer. A vibrant black middle class was in place with savings, investments and mortgages being possible. Farmers contributed significantly to our current road networks kumaruzevha in addition to critical infrastructure like dams, canals, schools and clinics. All these contributed to making life easier for the rural folk, however oppressed we were. In any case most towns were built around white economic activities and we grew up enjoying a world class system. Why haven't we been able to emulate the white man's economic and social development model. We have failed to maintain kana cattle dipping program yakasiiwa nemurungu. The Rhodesian economic system and ambition took precedence over political differences. In their minority they even had a standard political system that allowed for different political ideologies rooted in constitutionalism and not race. Cronyism and corruption drive the government of the "liberators".
Smith had at some points needed a black man, those who were chefs in hotels majority were blacks if he never liked black he wouldn't have have let the white people eat what blacks cook, 🤔that hatred was out absolutely, Smith wanted a government with blacks like America's, Australia's, He hated British and the monarchy those directive orders to govern a country from Royal family it's something naturally engrossed that was not in his cards So the British government through missionaries had to educate us so we can could counter his rule legislative ly and after that we abandoned themissionery works for Marxism and and Russia that when all hell broke loose, wagons got the wheels off.... 🤷‍♂️

People especially blacks who lived during the Smith regime tend to forget the massacres and genocides which were carried out by the Rhodesian army on anyone who opposed its dictatorial authority. Most of your grandparents or great grandparents were slaughtered or burnt alive in their huts by the Rhodesian force...Those infrastructural developments came at the expense of slavery and decapitation of blacks through forced labour without pay or proper accommodation..Whites enjoyed much of the fruitage, while blacks squandered in poverty in remote infertile rural areas..Even though l don't endorse Zanupf alleged past crimes..the Smith regime was the worst period of harsh abuse to Black majority in post-Zim history.

Every year this debate somehow takes over X formerly known as Twitter ...It is quite alarming how people glorify a regime that was content with treating native Africans as second class citizens...Smith's regime was so bad and racist even to this day neo-Nazis glorify it and you do not need me to tell you how awful that is... Black Zimbabweans during the Smith were robbed of the chance to accumulate generational wealth because of the exclusionary nature of his laws..Zanu PF for all it's alleged flaws has never blocked anyone from actively pursuing their dreams or generating wealth based on arbitrary traits like the color of your skin... Heck my grandparents were killed by Smith for simply being black..Rhodesia was) Bread basket because blacks were being forced to work for nothing under harsh conditions, education was not expanded to include every black child , some areas were only for white people. Smith was a man so vile he blatantly committed war crimes by poisoning black people with anthrax and thallium yet some weird people are glorifying him.. Smith's idea of "development" was to use the colonial conquest, plunder and pillage of Zimbabwe to enact racist laws to dehumanise blacks and condemn them into servitude to build infrastructure only for 277,000 whites.... Please refrain from making careless statements...Rant over sanity restored

ZANU while not perfect is not cruel, we are witnessing the emergence of a prosperous black middle class in Zimbabwe something which was totally outlawed by Smith...
