ZESA "System Disturbance" Plunges Zimbabwe Into Darkness

Zimbabwe experienced a nationwide electricity blackout on Sunday night into Monday morning, prompting widespread frustration on social media.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) confirmed the outage in a statement issued on Monday, attributing it to a disturbance in the national grid that led to a system-wide blackout. Reads the statement:

We regret to advise our valued customers that the national grid experienced a system disturbance last night resulting in a system blackout.

Our Engineers reacted and began the restoration process. We are happy to advise that as of this morning most of the load centres have been picked countrywide.

The blackout further exacerbated the frustration of Zimbabweans already enduring frequent power shortages, with some major urban areas, like Chitungwiza, experiencing up to 20 hours of daily power cuts.

In other parts of the country, people are enduring outages lasting up to a week, often without any explanation from the power utility.

Despite having the installed capacity at its power stations, ZESA is struggling to generate enough electricity to meet demand.

Hwange Power Station is currently producing around 1,000 MW, while Kariba Power Station, typically the most reliable, is operating at just a tenth of its installed capacity due to falling water levels at Kariba Dam.

There is no electricity at all, we import solar panels from countries that don't have sunlight like we do, we need to think outside the box coz Kariba is no longer an option when we mention climate change...

what they did of planning to shut down small plstations like Bulawayo station was a wrong move... they should have enforced ways of upgrading Bulawayo substation by seeking investment Bulawayo could be producing it's on electricity by now. Like before and it could have contributed to the national grid.. allow private sector to venture in and let everything be favourable to them. gvmnt should take 45% and private sector 55% by so doing many investors will come forth

ZESA has the capacity to give citizens of this country power but that would be against good business ethics, who in their right minds would want to operate at a loss🤔 As long as the government keeps subsidising electricity then aluta continua. ZESA should just hike electricity tariff and have a minimum monthly price like 20 bucks because most of the people now buy electricity for lighting TV and charging phones( maybe 5 bucks can cover the whole month) whilst they can export the electricity and get great prices an keep their workers happy 😜😜😜 Hate it or like it the people of Zimbabwe do not deserve electricity kkkkkk
