Victoria Falls Residents, Zimparks Clash Over Roaming Buffaloes

Residents of Victoria Falls are facing challenges coexisting with a large number of buffaloes that have been frequently seen in both high-density urban and low-residential areas.

According to VicFallsLive, the buffaloes have become a common sight, with videos from residents showing attempts to guide them away using sticks and rocks, though the buffaloes remain unbothered.

On Wednesday, November 20, three buffaloes blocked the road on Jakaranda Street while feeding on leaves and grass.

Despite concerns raised by residents, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) asserts that the buffaloes are within their natural habitat. Tinashe Farawo, Zimparks spokesperson said:

I think we need to understand who is saying there has been a growing trend of buffalos in Victoria Falls for example. l think the numbers we have in Victoria Falls we don’t have much problems with them and this is what attracts tourists.

It’s a tourist town and one of the major draw-cuts for tourists is those buffalos. It is definitely their habitat that’s where they stay in the wild.

However, residents residents disagree. They say that the buffaloes are causing disruptions and may pose a danger to people. Said Khulani Ncube:

We are working hard to make a living, and now we have to deal with these wild animals in our streets.

In one incident, approximately 40 buffaloes blocked the road on Mkhosana Street near Kazungula Road while feeding on vegetables.

Witness Trymore Ndolo told VicFallsLive that the buffaloes could lead to an accident if no action is taken.

While Zimparks insists that the buffaloes are a tourist attraction, residents say their safety should come first.

Another resident acknowledged the importance of tourism but argued that people’s lives are equally, if not more, important than those of wild animals.

😂😂 Zimparks is right that area is the buffalos' home, the people should learn to adjust if they can't then they should ship out. In any case I don't see the government bowing down to their demands as the Vic Falls area is their cashcow and they won't do anything to mess it up. That is why Vic Falls mostly escaped the political chaos engulfing other urban settings in the country since it is very important to the government, they will definitely choose tourism and animals over the residents.

Victoria Falls town is quickly becoming an overcrowded city. Council is just interested in selling plots in the high and low density areas without building any infrastructure to support the extra housing: we have daily and nightly water rationing, we have drainage that doesnt work, we dont have enough speed humps to slow the traffic down, we have no street names in the new living areas, there is no street lighting, there are no white traffic lines painted on the roads but the Council offices has 3 brand new Prados parked together with 2 fancy Toyota Fortuners in their carpark and only 2 working rubbish collection trucks, the town is overcrowded with baboons so you have to close your windows and doors of your house. And the other day Nat Parks sllaughtered a female elephant that was looking after 3 young ones, shot by an untrained Parks official using an AK rifle taking 5 shots to kill the elephant. Along the upriver river frontage there is now 4 lodges and Parks has issued licences to 3 more to be built. We are overcrowded, all in the name of money.

Well it's Zimbabwe mate, those things are prevalent in every city/town in the country. For those basic things to be set right an entire new Administration will have to come in. I was referring to the tourism amenities, as for the general public it's obvious that life is tough and based on the foreigners I talked to they said as compared to the others it's maybe a bit better but based on your first hand testimony I'm starting to see that maybe isn't that better after all 😅😅, maybe the lads I talked to didn't want to provoke me or something 😂.
