Kariba Dam Water Levels Continue To Fall Despite Rainfall

The water level at the Kariba Dam continues to decline, despite some rainfall in the reservoir and its immediate catchment area.

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) reported on Monday, November 18, that the lake level has dropped to 476.03m, representing just 3.71% of usable storage.

This marks a significant decrease compared to the same date in 2023, when the lake level stood at 477.68m, with 15.15% of usable storage. ZRA said:

The Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels 475.50m and 488.50m (with 0.70m freeboard) for hydropower generation.

The Lake level is steadily decreasing with fluctuations being observed due to the influence of rainfall on the lake and immediate catchment, closing the period under review at 476.03m (3.71% usable storage) on 18th November 2024, compared to 477.68m (15.15% usable storage) recorded on the same date last year.

Last week, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Edgar Moyo, told Parliament that the country’s power utility, ZESA Holdings, is currently generating just 100 megawatts at the Kariba South Power Station, which has an installed capacity of 1,050 MW. Moyo said:

In Kariba during that time, we were able to do up to 300 megawatts but now we are only able to do 100 megawatts.

We were allocated 8.4 billion cubic metres of water for Lake Kariba for use this year but, at some point, we had to get up to 500 megawatts from Kariba to meet the high demand.

That has significantly reduced the water levels, and we are now left with about 1 billion cubic litres of water, which can generate 100 megawatts up to the end of the year.

The original design of the Kariba Dam was for a total power generation of 1200MW for each bank (600MW North Bank - Zambia and 600MW South bank - Zimbabwe). So all things being equal , at plant capacity of 0.6-0.7 each bank should have been generating a minimum of 400MW and max 500MW. WITH this fact bare, a minimum of 3.5TWh of energy for each nation. The power plants expansions (North Bank and South Bank) to increase installed capacities to 1000MW for each bank were meant to only help in the peak times. These are not meant to run 24/7 365. The components of the expanded plants are meant to run at PF0.15 or 15% of the expanded expert

Sanctions has nothing to do with low water level of Kariba. Kariba was built for the whole population of the country not just the minority at the time. People must realise that the population has increasd considerably since Kariba was completed and the present government has done nothing to build more power stations. So get your facts right before you blame the white minority

Whoever coined the article's title needs to go back to school for serious geography lessons on the Zambezi River catchment areas and the associated weather patterns currently bedeviling southern Africa..

There are two serious issues that cause the water from the lake to drop so faster than the rains catch up (1)there has been rampant illegal mining mostly to along the shores of the lake for various minerals being explore and vast is stolen, so there's so much seepaging of water from the dam and it's feeding tributaries🙄so it's going to be Sadc meeting difficult for to fill up the dam (2)some process used to be to remove water from such mines are a contributory factor, there are chemical that should not be into contact with water they affect the hydrological cycle and can increase the water evaporation at alarming rate levels, all these are instigated and by artisinal miners So what measure are the government of the doing, in I'd suggest instead of of lip servicing, the government is should build up more hydropower along Zambezi so that by the time we get more water Zesa is surely going to be a power house

Actually it's rains from Zambia that are important cause the Zambezi source is in Zambia. undulating miombo woodland 50 km (31 mi) north of Mwinilunga and 20 km (12 mi) south of Ikelenge in the Ikelenge District of North-Western Province, Zambia, at about 1,524 metres (5,000 ft) above sea level

He warned they will destroy civilisation and it has come to pass.Kariba has never gave the Rhodesian government until we renamed the country and handed it over to cluesless Ediots.

What has Chamisa done, you know Zanu PF has destroyed Zimbabwe more, let Chamisa try so we may compare. ED has been in Government more than your Age, Corruption has drastically increased, now Zimbabwe has became an informal sector big Companies are leaving Zimbabwe Unilever you what tjat means, it means Zimbabwe is Importing basic commodities from Other contries like SA, commodities like Surf, Omo, Sunlight, those are Unilever products. Zimbabwe is now South Africas biggest customers under ED. Thats why Zig will always fail because Zimbabwe is run by Informal Traders who dont pay tax forcing Mthuli to Introduce taxes that hurt a few that work and pruce increase on basic commodities. Thats why mazowe is always cheap outside its not taxed
