Taxes And Fees To Be Paid Exclusively In ZiG - Mthuli

The government plans to mandate that most taxes and fees be paid exclusively in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency to increase demand and stabilise its value.

This was said by Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube during a dialogue with development partners in Harare on Wednesday. Said Ncube:

Already, customs duties are now payable in local currency. Going forward and in line with the de-dollarisation roadmap, other taxes will also be paid exclusively in local currency, including payment for government services.

However, most Zimbabweans believe that confidence in the ZiG currency would increase if essential items like fuel and services such as passport fees were payable in the local currency.

According to Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mushayavanhu, the ZiG is supported by US$450 million in foreign reserves as of October 10, 2024.

Since its introduction in April, the ZiG has depreciated from US$1: 13.5616 to US$1: 26.6718 as of October 16.

eddy May and Cde Mtisi summed up the problem. I only read ecomonics when I was doing my Os and failed the subject dismally but I can think better than the professor who struggles with th fundamentals of the subject. Dedollarisetion can only succeed only when the whole banking system has been revisited too as people have deserted banks.No one wants to leave their money overnight because bank charges are extractively too high.

Mthuli is the problem. An expert in a particular field should not be diverted from professionalism by politicians and used as they please. He should not accept a mockery of his technocracy. He should either demand to be left to practice his proffession or he quits the post. For the past 6 yrs nothing positive was done by Mthuli and a mockery to his proffessionalism. A proffessor of Economics with a cv of failures

Wishful thinking I'm afraid. Just more confusion - less money in the Gvmt coffers etc. etc. Can our estimate Finace Minister and RBZ not understand that nobody wants this ZIG? Try and buy a broom or tomatoes from the street side with ZIG , they'll throw it back to you!! How can a currency possibly survive in this reality?
