Rhythm City’ star Bra Kop opens up about family rejection due to his Zimbabwean wife.

Renowned South African actor and former “Rhythm City star” Setlhabi Taunyane – also known as Bra Kop – has revealed painful personal struggles involving his family’s rejection of his wife due to her Zimbabwean roots.

In an emotional interview on the King David Studio podcast, Bra Kop, who has been married for over 17 years, revealed the xenophobic attitudes that have cast a shadow over his relationship and family life.


Bra Kop recounted how his family never truly accepted his wife because of her nationality, highlighting the deep-seated prejudices that still persist in many communities.

“My family never really accepted my wife,” he said.


“I just heard two days ago, that one of my cousins in Diepkloof was buried two weeks ago and no one phoned me.”

The couple has been married for over 17 years, but Bra Kop admitted that the tension has been a constant throughout their relationship.

“It has not changed because I am married to ‘Lekwere-kwere’,” a word in South Africa used to describe foreigners, which is considered xenophobic and offensive.

The actor spoke with emotion about how the exclusion from family events has become the norm, saying “I have learned to live with that”.

The xenophobia, according to Bra Kop, extends beyond just his family. He said that once someone is abandoned by their family, the discrimination grows, even outside family circles.

“It starts with the family, but once you are abandoned by your family, this thing grows bigger, even outside the family.”

Despite the hardships, Bra Kop’s love story with his wife is one filled with destiny and affection. He shared the story of their first meeting, recalling how he saw her one day and felt an instant connection.

“One day I went to buy Magwinya and saw this woman running. My heart went ‘boom boom,’ and I ran after her, and I said ‘sorry sis, mangikumoshela isikhathi, ngifuna ukukhuluma nawe athi hhayi ngijahile, ngithi please thatha nayi iphone number yami, ngifuna ukukhuluma nawe please.” (sorry ma’am, sorry for wasting your time, can I talk to you, she then said ‘I am in a rush’ and I said please take my number, I really want to talk to you).

He also added she was the one that phoned him a few days later.

Zanu-PF Faces Growing Divisions Amid Concerns Over Mnangagwa’s Succession.

Harare, Zimbabwe – The Zimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI) has warned that the ruling Zanu-PF party is facing its most precarious moment since the 2008 general elections due to internal factional conflicts and doubts about President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s plans to step down in 2028.

While Mnangagwa has publicly committed to leaving office at the end of his second term in 2028, concerns are rising among critics and political observers about efforts from some of his loyalists to extend his presidency to 2030. This division has sparked two primary factions within Zanu-PF: one pushing for the extension of Mnangagwa’s rule, and another urging him to respect the constitutional term limit.

A report from ZDI, titled “Entering the Foggy Zone: Transition and Succession,” sheds light on this escalating factional tension within Zanu-PF. Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga has spoken out against the glorification of individual leaders, emphasizing the need to prioritize national values over personal ambition. His remarks are seen as an indirect challenge to Mnangagwa’s leadership, revealing deeper fractures within the party.

The ZDI report draws comparisons to Zanu-PF’s vulnerable position during the 2008 elections, a period marked by internal disunity and significant electoral challenges. “Elite disunity over succession issues suggests that Zanu-PF is at its most precarious since 2008, especially after the 2023 elections, which were widely criticized by SADC, the AU, and the EU for manipulation,” the report says.


Drawing on historical analysis of authoritarian regimes, ZDI highlights that internal splits between hard-liners and reformers often play a key role in political transitions. The report suggests that Zimbabwe’s current political climate, with Zanu-PF fragmented over Mnangagwa’s succession, could be laying the groundwork for potential democratic shifts.

Despite these internal struggles, Zanu-PF continues to maintain control through the suppression of opposition parties. The report points to the destruction of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and the controversial recalls of opposition MPs as part of Zanu-PF’s strategy to weaken credible threats to its rule. Sengezo Tshabangu, who has declared himself CCC secretary-general, has been instrumental in further fracturing the opposition, the report notes.

The ZDI report also emphasizes the significant role the military continues to play in shaping Zimbabwe’s political transitions. “The military has historically been a pivotal force in Zimbabwe’s political transitions, and it remains a key player in determining Mnangagwa’s successor,” the report asserts.

As Zimbabwe moves closer to the end of Mnangagwa’s presidency, the growing factionalism within Zanu-PF will likely have a critical impact on the party’s future and the broader political landscape of the country.

MASVINGO – Three Zimuto High School pupils, Tinashe Gwara, Praise Turikai and Theophelus Beans are representing the country at this year’s African High School Debate Challenge (HiDC) and Public Speaking competitions in Lagos, Nigeria in December.
The school’s Public Speaking and Debate team Coach, Femiya Tazava confirmed the competition that will be held at Dansol High School in Lagos, Nigeria, from December 11 – 15.
This year’s edition is running under the theme: Speaking against all.
Zimuto earned the sole ticket to the regional competitions after being crowned national champions.
“I am ecstatic with the achievements that our students have made and we are proud of their achievements as Zimuto High School. The school has undergone a serious upward educational trajectory. Just last year our pupils participated in the SECTA competitions in Togo.
“Our students break all the records. Praise made it in the 10 finalists in public speaking and Theophelus and Tinashe qualified on the debate competitions after they came on number eight,” she said.
The school is also sending pupils to Uganda for the regional SECTA debate competitions and to Turkey for the international robotics on dates to be announced.

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded at Kenya's main airport as workers protest against a planned takeover by an Indian company.

Large queues formed outside Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday morning as flights were delayed and cancelled.

Workers launched a "go-slow" - where staff deliberately work slowly to cause disruption - in a stand against proposals to lease JKIA to the Adani group for 30 years.

The aviation workers union argues the deal is "opaque" and could lead to job losses.

However, the government has defended the proposal, saying the airport is operating beyond capacity and needs private investment to upgrade it.

Why are African flights so expensive?

On Wednesday morning, dozens of airport workers blew plastic trumpets and chanted "Adani must go", according to footage shown on local broadcaster Citizen TV.

The video also appear to show a police officer hitting a protester with a baton.

Wilma van Altena, who was on holiday in Kenya but cut her trip short to return to the Netherlands for a funeral, was among those stuck at the airport.

“It’s been chaotic... there were hundreds of people outside the airport when we arrived and we stood around and eventually made it inside," she told the BBC.

“We have no information. There’s nothing on the boards, we’ve heard nothing from the airline. I need to get home but I have no idea when that will happen.”

The Zimbabwe men’s football team was also stranded.

The squad had flown into Nairobi after an African Cup of Nations qualifier game in Uganda, but had been given no information about their onward flight to Harare, an official who did not want to named told the BBC.

The BBC’s Stewart Maclean, who is among those waiting to catch a flight, said that at around 05:45 BST (07:45 local time), the hundreds queueing outside the airport were calm, patient but frustrated.

He said that cabin crew and pilots were among those waiting.

In a statement, the Kenya Airports Authority said: "As of 7:00am, minimal operations had resumed."

"In the meantime, we are engaging relevant parties to normalise operations. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time."

The Kenya Aviation Workers' Union previously warned of an indefinite strike after the government failed to disclose details of the deal with the Adani Group.

The Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission also criticised the plans, arguing that it is unreasonable to lease a strategic national asset to a private company.

The two parties filed a challenge to the High Court, which subsequently halted the deal to allow time for a judicial review.

The date for a final court decision has yet to be set

HARARE — The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has issued a ban on the sale of Starlink User Terminals (kits) by telecoms service providers and ordinary dealers without a licence as government pulls out all the stops to piggyback on a galloping public demand for the global internet service to draw some easy revenue.

This follows the recent licensing of Elon Musk’s company to roll out the novel internet service in  Zimbabwe by the government.

The entry of the satellite internet service provider into Zimbabwe’s telecoms space has opened up demand for its kit as more locals seek affordable and more reliable connectivity.

However, in a Tuesday statement, POTRAZ Director General Gift Kallisto Machengete pronounced a ban in the sale of Starlink kit without a licence.


“It is a condition of the Starlink licences that such agencies, dealers and ISPs shall be subject to clearance by POTRAZ.

“This condition applies to both existing and prospective ISPs and Network Operators. The sale or distribution of Starlink User Terminals without appropriate licensing and clearance is, therefore, an offence punishable by law,” Machengete said.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s government has introduced hefty fines of up to $5,000 for poor service in the country’s telecommunications industry.

In a statement Tuesday, ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera said the government will levy fines of between $200 and $5,000 per infringement for telecommunications companies and internet providers who fail to give reliable service.

Gokwe man axes wife, father-in-law

GOKWE – Police in Gokwe has launched a manhunt for Matare Karikoga (46) who allegedly axed his wife and father-in-law last Tuesday morning.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the matter to The Mirror.
He said the incident happened at Karikoga Village, Chief Sayi in Gokwe around 2am.
He said that Solomon Chikwiko (72) and his daughter Mailet Chikwiko (27) are battling for life at Gokwe District Hospital.
“We confirm receipt of an attempted murder case where a 72 year old man and his daughter were gravely assaulted by the daughter’s husband.
“The incident occurred on Tuesday last week at 2am at Village Karikoga under Chief Sayi in Gokwe,” said Inspector Mahoko.
Circumstances are that Karikoga had an altercation with Mailet and she packed her clothes and went to her parents homestead.
Karikoga followed her at night and broke down a door of the room she was sleeping in.
He then struck her with an axe several times on the head and all over the body. Mailet screamed and Chikwiko came to her rescue.
Chikwiko was however, struck with the axe once on the head and he fell down. Karikoga allegedly continued assaulting him with the axe as he lay on the ground.
Karikoga then allegedly continued assaulting his wife after Chikwiko remained motionless. He then ran away and is on the run.
Mahoko urged the public to desist from violence and solve their differences amicably.
“Once again, we urge the general public to desist from resorting to violence when resolving disputes,” said Inspector.


5 High Court Judges sent to Gokwe as murder cases soar

GWERU – The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken the unprecedented move to deploy five High Court judges to the Midlands Province and in particular Gokwe to deal with outstanding murder cases which have soared to 150.
Two judges will sit in Gokwe and three in Gweru and each Judge will hear 30 cases. Transport and witness quarters have been arranged in both Gweru and Gokwe for this massive circuit.
The Mirror is told that there is an alarming rise of murder cases in the Midlands and in particular Gokwe where Government has allowed unregulated mining activities to go on. Drug abuse has also led to mental illness and a lot of murder cases.
Midlands Provincial Public Prosecutor Samuel Pedzisayi confirmed the assignment of the judges to the Midlands Province and that it will last for three weeks from 9 to 27 September 2024.
Normally JSC deploys one judge on circuit to the Province for two weeks.
“Unlike the traditional High Court circuit which runs for two weeks, this circuit will run for three weeks and five High Court judges will be deployed to handle over 150 murder case .
“Three judges will be deployed in Gweru while two others will preside over murder cases in Gokwe,” he said.
Ninety murder cases will be tried in Gweru while 60 cases will be handled in Gokwe.
National Prosecution Authority spokesperson Angeline Munyeriwa said accommodation for witnesses has been secured in both Gokwe and Gweru.
“Police have been roped in and they are already on the ground serving witnesses with subpoenas to appear in court and locating accused persons.
“Witness quarters have been sorted out for both Gokwe and Gweru with travelling expenses and other logistics also having been finalised,” she said.
For the past years, residents have been facing lengthy delays and high expenses in their bid to seek justice.
One of the cases to come before the judges is that of Gweru killer, Peter Dube who is facing two murder cases and two attempted murder counts.
He is accused of shooting two people and injuring two others before fleeing the country.
Another notable case involves a Chinese national Cai Yulong who is facing one count of murder, attempted murder and assault.
Yulong is accused of shooting artisanal miners at Blackhand Belle Mine in Zhombe. Masvingo mirror

President Mnangagwa has said at least twice that he has <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/08/08/im-a-constitutionalist-mnangagwa-vows-to-respect-term-limits/">no interest extending stay beyond his constitutionally provisioned 2 terms</a>. He is serving his last term which started in 2023 and will end in 2028.
Mnangagwa has said that he is a constitutionalist who believes in following the constitution to the letter.
Some quarters within Zanu PF, in the opposition and analysts have however said Mnangagwa is disingenuous in his claims. Some have said that it’s a well orchestrated effort to distract those campaigning against a third term while his supporters work to push for a change of the constitution to give him more terms in power.
Some have questioned why he has not castigated individuals pushing the “2030 Anenge Achipo” in public in order to stop the campaigns.
Others have however said that his own words about being constitutionalist who is not interested in changing the constitution to stay in power, can be used against him to ensure he leaves office in 2028.
