Govt Fires Rural Teachers' Union Leader Obert Masaraure From His Teaching Job

Govt Fires Rural Teachers' Union Leader Obert Masaraure From His Teaching Job

Obert Masaraure, a prominent trade unionist and human rights activist, has been summarily dismissed from his position as a high school teacher.

Masaraure, who serves as the president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), disclosed his dismissal in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. He said:

Today I received a summary dismissal from my teaching post. The letter dated 30 March was pregnant with lies, but because no one accorded me the right to be heard they acted on falsehoods.

I have served the government since May 2014 and they chose to just terminate my contract.

It’s so heart-wrenching that we have a serious shortage of STEM teachers. Some of us are willing to serve under the difficult working conditions.

The ruling elites choose to invest anything and everything to block us from teaching. They are punishing learners not me. We won’t allow it

Opposition politician Gift Ostallos Siziba condemned Masaraure’s dismissal, saying the trade unionist was merely a victim of his activism. Said Siziba:

ARTUZ President Masaraure is a STEM teacher in a country that is losing teachers leaving the country due to poor remuneration.

The regime has expelled him without due process. This is the challenge with the regime in Harare.

Instead of addressing the issues raised by the teachers and civil servants, it decides to punish their representatives. We have to wage a collective fight!

Masaraure has been a prominent and outspoken advocate for the rights of teachers in Zimbabwe, championing better working conditions and defending the independence of the education sector from political interference.

He has been a vocal critic of the government’s treatment of teachers, who have long grappled with issues like low salaries, inadequate resources, and poor working environments.

Masaraure’s dismissal from his teaching position is widely seen as a retaliatory measure against his vocal activism and defence of human rights.

As a prominent trade unionist and civil society leader, he has been a thorn in the side of a government that has been accused of cracking down on dissent and suppressing the activities of independent organisations.

The summary nature of Masaraure’s termination, without due process, is likely to be interpreted as an attempt to silence a prominent critic and deter others from speaking out against the government’s policies and actions.

Muri **** tsano. Zidodo. every worker has a right to be a member of a Trade Union-which has to have leaders that it elects . when those leaders refuse to be swallowed by gvt makuti he's a politician. yet you don't say the same of the leaders of the parallel Gvt affiliated unions . Just sit down and acquire some knowledge. read a bit b4 talking in public

He was legally doing what civil servants legally voted him for. Representing them from the predetory Zanu Pf government.

Freedom, Democracy, Transparency, Openness, Progress and Honesty are anathema to ZANU. ZANU thrives on Dictatorship, Opacity, Authoritarianism, Dishonesty, Lootocracy, Repression, Opportunism and Corruption.

Haiwawo, ngaatawure kuti adzingirweyi. He was now spending most of his time as an activist not teaching drawing salary & allowances from Gvt for doing nothing.

@Attested Development, the regime says it fought for freedom so whats the matter now. Freedom also includes freedom of association and those kids will make up their own mind regardless of what their teacher is telling them such is politics
🥴Attested development · 8 months ago
Not only that bad influence to scholars and their schooling are compromised, you can't be an activist and teacher simple, under who's carricular are you following, or you are just teaching revolt in class, yes it's true we cant celebrate the termination of one's employment butmazvokuda ma vanga enyora

And where are the teachers the man represented? You take risks for Zimbabweans at your own peril. Are we really this dull or s t u p i d?

Do not despair Obert, the regime acts like it owns the country but chakanaka ndechekuti vachazongoisiya nyika yacho and our kids will make sure that history doesn't forget their terrible deeds their offspring will be shamed to be related to the them. No matter how long it will take Zimbabwe will be free again, the walk to Freedom is a long and lonely journey but through passing on the torch of freedom we will eventually get there. Free Free Zimbabwe!!!!

Now he can teach at a private school since there's a shortage of STEM teachers
KB · 8 months ago
At the end of the day, it's the kids who suffer...as a STEM teacher with 10 years experience he can get a teaching job at most private schools in the country or even outside Zim so he's really alright...it takes a true patriot to keep working for this shoddy govt for the sake of the students and ultimately the future of the nation...if members of ARTUZ resign enmasse in solidarity naObert, hameno kuti zvinosvika kupi...zvimwe zvacho zvine kakusafunga mukati

Yu will certainly get another teaching job in private schools

😂😂😂😂 this is an astounding 8K chess move by the government..For years this activist made no attempt to hide his political antidestablishment while falling back on the cushy salary being given to him by the government....Now look at him mourning and whinging because he has been sent to the back of the unemployment line😂😂😂😂😂... Let's hope all those that you used to shower him with likes and retweets will hand him a job ..I can already foresee his wife leaving him as no1 enjoys being around an unemployed goober who is full of nonsensical political ideas... Erudite out

Yes, they do it to be known. And they get known. What has ED ever done when he eventually gets to know? He endorses that by silence. They all know how ED expects them to act in all circumstances.
