Political commentators criticise the new executive as bloated, citing its over 60 ministers and deputy ministers, and noting that several ministerial portfolios include two deputy ministers.

After days of negotiations over ministerial portfolios with the ANC, the DA reportedly accepted Ramaphosa’s final offer on Saturday, June 29.

This decision came after the EFF, led by Julius Malema, approached the ANC to join the Government of National Unity, under the condition that it exclude the DA and Freedom Front Plus.

Ramaphosa appointed ANC deputy president Paul Mashatile as South Africa’s Deputy President and allocated the Ministry of Agriculture to John Steenhuisen, the leader of the DA.

The DA was also given several ministerial portfolios which include:

• Minister Basic Education: Siviwe Gwarube
• Minister of Communications: Solly Malatsi
• Minister of Public Works: Dean MacPherson
• Minister Home Affairs: Leon Schreiber
• Minister of Environmental Affairs: Dion George

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) president Velenkosini Hlabisa was appointed as the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, while Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie is the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.
