Correct me if I am wrong, I often am
Pre-1980 I cannot recall maningwe potholes and crumbling tarmac. I seem to remember car taxation was spent on road maintainance. Insurance companies experienced far fewer claims and ambulances & hospitals greeted fewer road accident casualties. Coeoners autopsied fewer dead by traffic remains, there were fewer funeral parlours.
Oh yes, toll roads were invented by the west and us Africans did not see a need for our countries to have them

Opinion: The ZiG…
What will make it or break it??
There are people who tend to think that simply saying the currency is BACKED BY GOLD makes it valuable & stable, NOPE, it’s not as easy as that… There are lots of things that need to be done, & they must be SEEN to be done!
1. The ZiG must be USEFUL
A currency is only valuable if it can be used for transactions without restrictions. As long there are times and places where the ZiG isn’t accepted for payments, then it’s a waste of time.
2. Confidence: The Govt MUST take the lead
The currency’s success depends on the confidence of the users. This is why the enemies of progress in the opposition are on an overdrive to kill confidence in the new currency.
Building confidence won’t be easy considering the history of monetary policies in Zimbabwe. This is where GOOD COMMUNICATION, TRANSPARENCY, & DISCIPLINE is needed. Not only should things be done differently, they MUST BE SEEN to be done differently.
The currency is the govt’s baby, the govt itself must take the lead in accepting the currency for all payments. In fact, it must demand payment in the local currency.
If the govt repeats the mistake of demanding payment in foreign currencies, then this ZiG is doomed.
3. FULLY floating exchange rate
The forex black market is a symptom of a flawed formal forex market. In fact, the black market always arises when govts interfere with the free market. When that happens, citizens create their own free market which govts love calling “the black market.” I think the better term is PARALLEL MARKET.
Once a black market arise, the ZiG will be in trouble.
To kill the black market, the @ReserveBankZIM must allow the formal market to be FULLY LIBERALISED, not the fake liberalisation that Governor Mangudya always announced. The ZWL became a black market currency of Mangudya and his commandist MPC.
It would be very **** for the new Governor to repeat the same mistake.
4. The ZiG’s demand MUST BE from inside & outside Zimbabwe.
There is a reason one can buy & sell the South African rand almost EVERYWHERE in the world. This is because it is a FULLY FLOATING CURRENCY.
The international forex market has no time for flawed exchange rates. They need to have confidence in the credibility of the currency’s exchange rate. With international demand, the ZiG will be powerful.
Theoretically, the ZiG is better than the US$ because it is backed by REAL ASSETS. However, without confidence, it’s a damp squib.
5. Eliminating the multicurrency system
The ZiG is a new currency… it has no chance competing with old established currencies like the US$….
This is why it’s important to discourage and totally eliminate the use of foreign currencies… Any policies promoting the use of foreign currency for domestic transactions are sabotaging the ZiG.
THEREFORE
It’s very important that the monetary authorities carry out a post mortem of the ZWL & fix those policies that led to its demise. It’s counterproductive to introduce a new currency while repeating the mistakes of the past
