Zimbabwean Teachers To Embark On 3-Day Job Action To Demand Fair Wages

The Federation of Zimbabwe Educators Unions (FOZEU), a collective of radical teachers’ unions, has issued a call to action for all teachers in Zimbabwe.

Beginning on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, they are urging teachers to participate in a 3-day job strike in response to the government’s recent US$20 wage increase, which they consider a mere “mockery”.

FOZEU said no teacher should report for duty from March 20 to March 22, 2024, and that the mass action will continue until the government pays a living wage. Reads the statement:

The Federation of Zimbabwe Educators Unions, FOZEU, a collective of radical teachers’ unions is calling on all teachers in Zimbabwe to embark on a 3 day Job action beginning Wednesday 20 March 2024.

Following the conclusion of consulting teachers on a fight-back strategy in the face of the mockery of a USD20 increment, we update our constituency as follows;

A total of 56 700 teachers were consulted both offline and online. 55 220 of the consulted teachers asked FOZEU to call for a Job action before Schools close and mobilise for an indefinite national trike when Schools open for 2nd term.

Some of the grievances which came from the teachers during consultations included the incapacity to pay examination fees for children because of inadequate salaries which is ironic for teachers who work to prepare children for examinations whilst their own children fail to sit for the same examinations.

The Federation hereby declares that;

1. No teacher should report for duty from Wednesday 20 March 2024 to Friday 22 March 2024

2. The mass action is to be escalated as the second term opens until the employer pays a living wage.

3. FOZEU leaders to engage other progressive unions in the Civil Service seeking collaborations in the fight for a living wage.

4. Deadlines for registration for sitting for Public Examinations be extended until the Salary Crisis is resolved.

FOZEU stands ready to provide legal assistance to all teachers who may face victimisation during the coming job action.

The Federation calls upon teachers to mobilise each other at classroom level to make this job action a success.

The employer has to be forced to pay a living wage of USD1 260, teachers are encouraged to seize this opportunity to apply pressure on the employer by completely withdrawing labour.

The Constitution of Zimbabwe provides for the right to Strike and picket.

Reports have emerged suggesting that ZANU PF, through its government workers affiliates, including the Teachers for Economic Development (ED) and Nurses for ED, may be involved in the hijacking of civil service recruitment processes. As reported by NewsDay, ZANU PF affiliates have set up centres in various provinces. These centres shortlist government job seekers who are also party members. The shortlisted members’ names are then taken to the Public Service Commission (PSC). Government officials are allegedly pressured to prioritize these ZANU PF-affiliated candidates for employment or training. The recruitment process is overseen by ZANU PF district and provincial party chairpersons, as well as party legislators and affiliate leaders. Jobseekers are required to provide evidence of their links to ZANU PF, such as party membership cards or participation in party events. For instance, in Chikomba District, ZANU PF Chikomba West legislator and ICT minister Tatenda Mavetera is leading the recruitment efforts. A communiqué sent to party members seen by NewsDay reads: Chikomba West Constituency Teachers for Economic Development Update: All teachers who completed their course not employed go and register to MP’s [member of Parliament] office next to N Richards Chivhu. MP [Tatenda] Mavetera is a true leader who leads by example. That’s finalisation of second phase. Ngatifonerei vanhu vane madetails ari pazasi (Let’s contact the people with details below). #Famba Zanu PF Famba #Famba Mavetera Famba (Forward Zanu PF, Forward Mavetera). However, PSC secretary, Tsitsi Choruma, professed ignorance on the matter, saying “I have never seen the ZANU PF recommendation letters”. ZANU PF director of information, Farai Marapira told NewsDay that the recruitment programme did not originate from the party. He said: As the economy is starting to recover and expanding, more jobs are opening up and we want these jobs to be taken up by Zimbabweans, so we conscientise the nation on the jobs that are coming up so that people fill up these spaces. The affiliates, in their autonomy have the right to behave as they do, but this is not a ZANU programme and ZANU PF does not look for jobs for people, but if it is the wish of the affiliates to do so, I believe it is within their mandate because I believe they are independent juristic independent institutions. But we encourage Zimbabweans to take up the new jobs as our economy is expanding. ZANU PF activists have, at times, been associated with incidents of misconduct, such as hijacking government initiatives like food aid distribution and misappropriating presidential agricultural inputs. vakupinzana ma basa Vega Vega vasingazo gunu'una .Saka itai zvinoita makangwara modzingwa Mose and they don't even care about you

Imi vaface ine ma glass chete, don't look at one side as a blinkered horse, assess why, people resort to alternatives which help sustainability, it's due to anomalies and under payment. Don't hate teachers so much, yet if we go to your child's school you yourself haven't paid fees for 2 years but still expect your child to be taught by a teacher who's hungry.,when you give your child us 20 per day to make it us 400 per month, the teacher of your child earns half your child's pocket money. So, don't prattle, when you don't have parameters of th the modality. You should support the cause of your child's teacher for her better education instead

Zimbabweans are not peace loving, they are cowards and the worst of cowards.They would rather be alive and face hardships than solve the problems. Zanupf has done a good job to make sure noone raises a voice and noone acts against its misgovernance and it's brutality. Teachers will be at work selling sweets and other staff to the school kids to try and make ends meet than confront the employer and demand a living wage. They would rather scrounge for crumbs than demand what is rightfully theirs, a living wage. They would rather get the peanuts and then complain behind closed doors than face the source of their problem, their employer, the peanuts will be better than no salary at all but we all know no sacrifice no gain. The struggle for life is made up of sacrifices, from conception to death, a human has to make sacrifices everyday

It's suprising how many people have been brain washed by zanupf, you can't even think outside the box. A civil worker earns bond and go to the street to change money to someone who doesn't work. Let's open our eyes

Ikowo can you really enjoy these pecking that are ever reviewed incessantly time and again, ku Civil service you really are seeing that the country is obliterated with economic problems but, what you are doing, you are holding a gun to the government heads, threatening, but its so clearer that not everyone is a civil servant, and in private sector there is no negotiations or adjustments that you so privy with at the touch of a button, we face threats of companies threatening to close shops and join masses in streets, vending. Its become clearer the civil servants are holding the country at ransom, Zveshuwa here unga rambe uchikama mombe mukaka is isina mafurokana kwaino fura what beauty is there to have a splash uptown house in a neighbouring area of tangwenas, favelas squatters, sewage rivers, pothole infested roads, not forgetting kids that go a day without a decent meal, Above all that, Teachers in particular are not teaching from schools anymore rather they are now doiled into getting extras from extra lessons charges, that's so injurious to a kid whose parents income has no dependable gainful source as theirs So there so much of greed in the teaching fraternity lately

Teachers holding the gvt at ransom. Nonsense do you even know what a ransom is?
😎 · 1 year ago
@nomara If you don't know, now you know Get this, people are not at all employed that is a fact, parents are scrounging for bitsnpieces of business jus to get by but vamwe vanhu in a definitive employment set are simply tossing basa ravo when government under all these economic circumstances is pushing harder to get teachers presentable but they don't seem to appreciate, where do they think the money would come from worse we have drought on the prowl and again it is not our currency that we are using makes it so difficult work with everyplace of employment

There is not unity within public sector workers that is why goverment is not worried at all.They must first removed Vana Cecilia Alexander if they want progress.
