In a power system there are Power stations- the generators Substations - transformers and switching equipment Power Lines- the wires that transmit and distribute power to users Grid- ( substations and power lines plus a control center for monitoring and controlling the system centrally to ensure safety of the system, personnel and users) For this to be achieved every country must have at least one big station which is used to run and provide stability of electrical parameters such as Voltage - the force that drives electrical flow Current - the actual charge that flows to the end user Frequency- the speed at which the two parameters above travels from source to the user Now in Zimbabwe, Kariba is the biggest station by production ie 1050MW Currently because of low water inflows into the lake there is only 300Mw being produced. So the removal of that 700mw makes it difficult to control the system because supply is now way below the user power demand because very low generation. In such cases the instability trips the generating station which has the biggest output at that time( in this case Hwange) That's just but one scenario. The other scenario is because our grid is interconnected to other regional countries, a similar fault can be induced in the grid if one of the countries switches off more power than our local system is producing. There a explanations to these situations but that's not the important part. The important part is we have lower generation capacity than demand. And worse there is climate change whose effects are droughts hence the biggest power plant which uses water as the source of input power is now grounded Pointing fingers does not solve our problems.
