Social Media Backlash: Calls To Boycott Kenya Airways Amid Customer Complaints

There have been calls on social media to boycott or cancel Kenya Airways after a Zimbabwean woman shared her negative experiences with the airline. The woman, named Fadzi, reported that she had received poor service from the airline on two separate occasions. She mentioned that her baggage was delayed and arrived damaged, with some items missing, including an AirTag that was still at the airport in Harare. Fadzi expressed her disappointment and suggested that people should choose another airline instead of Kenya Airways. In a post seen by Pindula News, she said:

I got my bag today, 6 days after I left Hre on @KenyaAirways @KQSupport (Kenya Airways Support) My bag is damaged beyond repair, items are missing including my AirTag which is still at Hre airport. @KenyaAirways calls itself ‘pride of Africa’ but after this experience, they should be ashamed.

I had to beg for my luggage twice. 1st I got to Hre & got my bag after 4 days; back home, I got my bag after 6 days. I implore you to find another airline to use, @KenyaAirways has been nothing but HORRIBLE. If it had been one way I’d have said bad luck. Twice is deliberate.

In response to Fadzi’s tweet, other individuals also shared their own negative experiences with the airline. One Twitter user mentioned using Ethiopian Airlines instead, highlighting their positive experience with the alternative carrier. Several users expressed their dissatisfaction with Kenya Airways, mentioning flight delays, poor communication, and lost luggage as common issues they had encountered. Some individuals vowed never to use the airline again. Some even called it Mushika-shika, a term used in Zimbabwe to refer to an informal public transportation system.

One person recalled a distressing experience involving both Kenya Airways and Dnata in Dubai, which led to financial losses. Another user claimed that their return flight to Melbourne was canceled by Kenya Airways, and they were still waiting for a refund. The sentiment on social media seemed to be overwhelmingly negative towards the airline, with many users sharing their disappointment and frustration.

Some Twitter users recommended considering other airlines, such as KLM or Ethiopian Airlines, as more reliable alternatives to Kenya Airways. They cited reasons such as better customer service, convenient loyalty programs, and a history of consistent performance.

I am Kenyan and make no excuses for KQ. However I would like to share that had the most horrible experience with Air Zim. They cancelled my flight in 2004 to Nairobi, have never communicated nor repaid my fare. Since you know a not about complaints, please help me address this even if its 20 years later.

What journalism ethics are these. Whether it happened or not, Kenya Airways deserve a response before publication of the story. Readers will then have a balanced story to make informed decisions. It takes a couple to dance the Tango. Checking your bags in at HRE, receiving you bags in NBO. One sure ting is bags do not burst open or be damaged during flight. Your bag may come to you in NBO broken. Did it happen when Kenyans offloaded it? Consider it may have been damaged while under the care of Air Zimbabwe during the bags journey from check-in to aeroplane hold. When I was proud AIRZIM traffic officer in the 80s our bag handlers were top of the tree. They respected bags as if their own. I had 7 years with BA at LHR before AirZim. Our AirZim handlers were mucch more efficient for suah!

Well done Fadzi for exposing Kenyan airways bad practices. I have vowed not to use Qatar airways. Twice they lost my bags. First time the back came after a day and my return flight from Harare to London was cancelled last minute 30 minutes before take off. I was stuck in Harare for 2 days and was late getting back to work and l lost income.l was told there was no compensation as the flight didn't originate from Europe. Last Christmas they also lost my bag and l got it after a week and their customer service was rubbish and no compensation. We should name and shame these airlines.

Been out of aviation 20 years now but I suggest you check that compensation rule. QATAR are full members of IATA...Montreal HQ... I think they must abide by IATA regs. Worth looking into china!

Kenyan Airways and Ethiopian Airways not my cup of tea the services are horrible. Had experience once with both fights few back and never went back rather pay extra money for my Emirates, South African Airways or British Airways than travel with those especially when u have children big disaster.

I think this whole thing is a strategy to tarnish the image of this company, and I don't think you have come to the right platform, most people who are here have never been even at the airport.I think if you have any queries it's better to conduct the responsible company authorities than trying to close that company, who will listen to your words of hatred, I think you have been paid well with a rival company

one day you wull face this, not only with kenya Poor services, evev Sa air or brit or emi, but you eill see how bad it is. Staying 8 to 10 hours transit is painfull bro/sis. specially if you were not told...

@porongi, this is what should be done in business when customers are shortchanged. So the Masai jump can't take them up to greater standards? Many thanks Fadzi. Tell me about AirZim. I've not boarded it since 1983.

iv) If you are staying for at least 8hrs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian has organized accommodation, food & transport for you. Kenyan Airways doesn't have any such arrangement and it is really uncomfortable.
Anonymous · 1 year ago
Haaaa I don't like that airline for more than one reason. i) I almost failed to go to work Ghana-Mozambique trip because of its OVER BOOKING habit. I was shocked to meet its personnel closing the counter 2.5 hrs before flight take off. There were 3 more people who had arrived earlier than me but were told the flight was full. We eventually managed to travel because of a couple and their 2 children whose luggage was under t****ugh screening. I was shocked. ii) I can't talk about delays. It is their order of the day. Even if it is not me, I hear other people I am to work with in other countries complaining of these regular delays. iii) The level of cleaniliness is sometimes compromised as well. Is it relatively cheap as compared to other airlines?

I used it also and then said never again. First the connecting flight to london was cancelled and the first connecting flight would have made me stay in Nairobi for 3 days at my cost. I then rebooked only to find out that connecting flight to london was cancelled again. Only available flight would be 14 hours later. I was stranded at the airport for that time. When i tried to pay extra to go into business lounge i was told i could only be allowed in 6 hours before the flight. So for me Kenyan airlines is a big NO. I am not alone in that terrible experience

Thank you Fadzi for speaking out. If we continue keeping quiet about our bad experiences then these airlines will not improve. A little criticism and negative press will maybe make them strive to live up to their motto because based on my personal experience with this airline, they don't deserve to be the pride of Africa

Fadzi, your bad experience with Kenya Airways is not a bad experience for everyone even if it happens to you twice. If u are to desist from using it you loose nothing by doing it quietly. There are reason why people prefer certain barbershops than others, certain Supermarkets than others, certain buses than others, certain brands of bread than others, certain banks than others. They prefer were their satisfaction is met. There are many who are satisfied with Kenya Airways than other airlines so calling for a boycott only serves to make it public the type of personality you are. Albeit all airlines have bits of customers who complain against their services at one time or the other

Well done Fadzi for sharing your experience. It helps those of us who share the same values with you. We don't have to go through the same experience.

Even Malawi airways u are made to disembark wen u are connecting to their other airline and go thru some physical searches after bags have been scanned after u have been made to walk a kilometer or so without trolleys to carry hand luggage...Malawi airways offers a horrible service at Lilongwe Airport.
doug · 1 year ago
Very interesting! Where were you coming from, and where were you going as you were in transit?
Pandege · 1 year ago
Can't agree with you more on Malawi Airlines. That changing of Seat Nos /disembarking in Lilongwe annoys everyone. Their Boeing 737 Jet from Zim is noisy. And then a candy cake for lunch!!! I long for the old Air Malawi -service was great. But since the Ethiopian Airlines takeover of the airline -what more can one expect-apart from a horible experience

We all have negative experiences with different airlines and airports. My negative experience was with Lufthansa and when i discussed this in the office some had problems with British Airways some with Emirates etc. airports to avoid for me are Addis Ababa and OR Tambo in Joburg. So no Ethiopian Airways for me. Calling everyone to boycott an airline simply because you had a personal negative experience is being selfish. s h i t happens my sister. Go for another airline, but remember others are living it too and at times for the one you are leaving. My experiences with Kenyan have been very positive but i dont like the Amsterdam airport for the connection to UK. That airport is racist and for that reason i avoid Kenyan, but the flights and baggage no problem for me.

We urge you to always speak out like you did just now, like what Fadzi did. It's this feedback that will help airlines improve. If you bottle your concerns, relevant authorities won't even know some of these things. Kenya Airways will improve after this. Other airlines will also improve as they are learning from this experience.
