UK Granted A US$43.7 Million Loan To Zimbabwe For Beitbridge Border Modernisation

The United Kingdom (UK) granted a loan of US$43.7 million towards the modernisation project of one of Zimbabwe’s key border crossing points with South Africa. This deal, confirmed by the British ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pete Vowles, took place in 2020. The project’s total cost amounted to US$296 million. In an X post seen by Pindula News, Vowles said:

Spent the morning at Beitbridge border to see how UK investment (through @PIDGorg) has reduced processing times, is speeding up regional trade & transforming the town. It’s seriously impressive & proof of the power of public private partnerships, led by Zimborders Great to see @MottMacDonald🇬🇧 providing expertise to the oversee the project.

Increasing trade & investment between Zimbabwe and UK is a priority for @UKinZimbabwe. In the last year trade between us has increased to over half a billion USD (£469m).

What really transpired:

The Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), provided a loan of US$43.7 million for a project to modernise the Beitbridge Border Post. Zimbabwe’s government granted a 17.5-year concession to Zimborders, a private company, to rebuild and operate the border post near Beitbridge.

The project aims to boost business, industry, and tourism in the region. The facility had been struggling to handle increased traffic and delays, causing inconvenience and financial losses. With the modernisation, waiting times are expected to decrease, and new infrastructure will benefit both Zimbabwe, South Africa, and other countries accessing the strategic road network. The project will create job opportunities, with a focus on increasing the employment of women.

The whole modernisation and improvement initiative in Beitbridge is scheduled to be completed in April of next year (2024). The project was divided into three phases to ensure civil works were completed without disturbing the border post.

Phase 1 comprises a freight terminal, roadways, and ICT facility upgrades (Phase 1),

Phase 2 comprises a bus terminal. The new Beitbridge Border Post bus terminal was first used in July this year. All construction activities, including ICT improvements, have been completed.

Phase 3 comprises a light vehicle terminal and out-of-port works.

Nice article in that it shows who sponsored the project. However, I think a few points needed clarification like, did a project which had been projected $46 mil later ballooned to $296 mil in taxpayer costs. Knowing zanupf very well, no deal of this propensity goes down without someone deeping their hands into the cookie jar. Are the exorbitant charges to motorists at that border post justified?

2 years ago the top man of Zim promised to completely redo the disgusting filthy overcrowded Kazangula Border Post. Until now absolutely nothing has happened. The place is full of rubbish, old and broken cars and trucks, baboons all over the place. It's a really bad image of this country as seen by tourists.

If the government of Zimbabwe was given US$43.7 million for the Terminal's Modernisation Project, how come Zimbabwe Borders is charging motorist alot money just to pass through that terminal? I heard that this company will charge motorists such amounts until after many years to come. This means they are doing so to pay off the debt accrued when putting up the infrastructure. Is that the case? Do they owe any one or we are being robbed here? Very few Zimbabweans are going back home with cars, unlike before when this Terminal was not yet built. Check the number of foreign cars in Zim this coming Christmas time and compare the number of SA cars compared to those years before this development. Seemingly you didn't investigate well enough to answer this question? Where did this US$43.7 million go? Did they build it with borrowed money that we are now paying back? At the SA side, we pay nothing to pass through the border, but at Zimbabwe's side, all the money is left there? What a cruelty????

I think if can take yr time to read well u will see the 43 point something million was a loan which is supposed to be paid back and also the whole project costs 290 point something million which means if can subtract 43 from 290 u will be left with 240 million which was needed to finish the project. So stop blaming okay just appreciate that the project is done

The problem we have with getting along with whites is that we always have something to hide and we spend all our energy to make sure that what we are hiding does not show! There is nothing as liberating as always telling things as they are, that is, the truth, practising the truth and living the truth. Those who live by the truth will always avoid those who compromise it.

that's the truth. we want to run actions without being questioned about legitimacy issues because somehow we see it as being ruled or controlled yet transparency is a ticket that can make those countries even bring more investment to us. Remember that when ED took over he was all over Europe vowing that he will now handle everything transparently since the corrupt and evil Mugabe was removed. That time we heard of quite a number of foreign investors who were interested in investing in Zw. It was so until the paint got off in August 2018. Blaming whites for sanctions is clearly an election gimmick

@noted Sometimes countries forget that there are representatives of other countries and other organizations and think that what they do or say in their countries, even in their local languages and dialects does not get noted or noticed outside. We have countries lying to foreign countries and organisations to give a better picture or to curry favour. There is a country not far from us which had the central bank or reserve bank producing reports for the IMF, World Bank and other financial institutions in such a way to fool them into releasing funds. The new government in power had to tell the truth to the organisations and to apologise and commit to transparency. The organisations forgave that country and they are more than happy to help
