A Disheartening Discussion On Whether Young Zimbabweans Should Stay Or Leave The Country

I have been reading a discussion on a platform called X (formerly Twitter) about whether young people in Zimbabwe should stay in the country or leave if they have the opportunity. The comments on this topic were quite disheartening.

Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, who started the discussion, believes that those who have the means should leave Zimbabwe. He thinks it is hypocritical for those who are already abroad to discourage others from leaving. He said:

Some Zimbabweans are silly and selfish, they are tweeting encouraging Zimbabwean youths not to leave Zim to better their lives elsewhere, yet they themselves are sitting in America, Europe and South Africa. Bloody selfish hypocrites! Some of them left 20 years ago and now own houses in Zimbabwe because they left, but they don’t want youths to leave and also own houses in Zimbabwe and better themselves, silly!

The issue sparked mixed responses. Some believe that leaving Zimbabwe would provide a fresh start and better opportunities abroad, while others argue that the youths should stay and work towards improving the country.

Chipo Dendere points out that leaving Zimbabwe is not an easy task, as it requires a substantial budget and resources. She said:

There is a difference between encouraging people to stay or leave and acknowledging that one doesn’t just pack their bags & walk out the door as if they have a British or American passport. Even going to Zambia costs money. You need a substantial pocket, place to stay, work or school.

Others shared their colleagues’ regrets about leaving Zimbabwe, emphasising that opportunities exist in the country for those who have a positive attitude. Meebz said:

Some left and regret it due to the harsh conditions they find themselves in. Returning to Zim is not an option because of the state of the country plus the fact they have roots abroad and leaving becomes difficult. Encourage people to fight, not flee

Mamago Entle urges the youths to stay and fight against the system, highlighting the need to confront issues directly instead of running away. Bule Zviko Marox believes that leaving Zimbabwe is a matter of survival, although border jumping is not condoned.

Gibson Chininga emphasises the importance of the youth staying in Zimbabwe to challenge the ruling party. Chininga said:

Honestly a country without youth is good as dead We need them to stay there and fight Zanu pf, they are the future leaders.

Others believe that if someone leaves Zimbabwe due to economic difficulties, they shouldn’t support the ruling party from abroad since the hardships are attributed to ZANU PF.

The debate also extends to the views of neighbouring countries. @Mzantsi202 urges the youths to go to Europe instead of “coming to South Africa”, as the country is also facing its own struggles.

Issues raised:

The discussion highlights several important issues. One is the financial constraints faced by young people in Zimbabwe, which may make it difficult for them to leave the country, even if they want to. Another aspect is the regrets expressed by those who have already left, suggesting that leaving does not always lead to better outcomes. Additionally, a need for a positive attitude and determination to create opportunities within the country.

Some Context:

Zimbabwe has been facing problems since the late 1990s. These issues are mostly caused by bad policies, corruption, and poor politics. Many people believe that the ruling party, ZANU PF, has mismanaged the country’s resources since gaining independence from Britain in 1980. This has led to socio-economic and political crises in Zimbabwe.

The political situation in Zimbabwe is not encouraging. Since the disputed elections in August 2023, there has been a deadlock, causing disruptions in the functioning of the new Parliament. The recalls and subsequent by-elections scheduled for December have resulted in the allocation of approximately US$5 million, which could have been used for other developmental purposes. Building a clinic, school, factory or something.

Furthermore, the economy is deteriorating. The Finance and Investment Promotion Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, has predicted a slowdown in the economy for 2024. The economy is already not performing well. Has not been performing well for quite some time. His predictions align with projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which recently visited Harare to discuss the country’s economy. The IMF team expects Zimbabwe’s economy to grow by around 4.8% in 2023 but anticipates a decrease to 3.5% in 2024. This decline is attributed to weaker global demand for minerals and agricultural setbacks caused by weather conditions.

In short, Zimbabweans are facing a difficult situation. The economy is struggling and it seems that the upcoming years will be challenging. On the other hand, life abroad is also tough. Nowhere to run!

Honestly speaking, this country is in a mess. Those who talk of opportunities, I wonder what opportunities are they talking about. Unless you hook yourself with the political gurus, it will be difficult for one to make a breakthrough here. Try to venture into mining, transport industry, agriculture or any other sector without any connections, that's when you realise that it's a mammoth task for the youths to make it here.

With local opportunities for the youth to use their hands, brains and skills to earn a living diminishing, and financial pressure and stress due to no pension or a US$30 monthly pension sending those looking after them to an early grave, the youth should seriously consider going out to other countries where they can get gainfully employed and, if possible, be able to give some support to their parents and siblings here. With the big supermarkets earnings decreasing due to our currency with government not condoning the sprouting tuckshops which some of the government officials may be owners, it will not be surprising to hear of massive retrenchments or closures at the big and even small supermarkets in a few weeks or months to come. Also, most of the companies which are producing local products are surviving by the grace of the government which has been giving them money to keep operating. The youth should also scrutinise the budget the minister will produce soon to see if there will be any hope for their situation. There are just too many factors pushing the youths outwards. With a lot of people past retiring age still in positions, with some of those even getting promoted, and retired people from other sectors filling posts, it makes it very very difficult for the youth as the old people may not look at the long term effects of their decisions or actions which they know will outlive them, unlike with a young person who will be aware that he or she may be asked to account for the decision or action. With so many thousands of youths graduating with no capacity to create own jobs and nothing to do, find a way to go out somewhere to do something for yourself. You can always come to your home when you feel like you have created the conditions and environment you can survive in. Whatever you do and wherever you go, home is always the best place!

Your views are nonsensical. Tuck shops are also businesses. People cannot and should pay exorbitant prices to keep supermarket in business enriching their billionaire owners. You can be a youth and foolish.

Other countries are crying out for skilled people and paying good wages. They will help you relocate if you meet their skills requirement. In Zim with a captured and hostile police force, a captured judiciary and government mismanagement there is no hope for the young people only a daily struggle. It's better for them to emigrate to countries where everything works as it is supposed to and make a better life for themselves. Time goes so fast before you know it your in your 60's for time waits for no man.
Anonymous · 1 year ago
Which countries are those. Why would your life in Zimbabwe involve your self with the police, judiciary is you are not a criminal.
Anonymous · 1 year ago
Iwe, you do not need to be a criminal in Zimbabwe to be involved with the police and the judiciary. All you need to do is to speak your mind.
cox · 1 year ago
@Anonymous : which state or country operates without a judicial system or police. those arms of the government are basic requirements needed for any government to be functional. now speaking of the various departments of our government there is none that is free from corruption. to get a birth certificate you need to pay a bribe, nations ID bribe your document out, qualification bribe, driver's license bribe, passport bribe, everything is bribe.

Making decisions based on twitter discussions without being realistic with your immediate surroundings is often disastrous.Hopewell as a journalist has generalized information regarding problems being faced in Zimbabwe therefore he's purely speaking as an academic not an Economist or Advisor.I encourage each and every one of you to make autonomous decisions based on your situation not advices on social media.THOSE guys have an Agenda to push not necessarily because they care for you but for themes
Anonymous · 1 year ago
Only the gullible can believe what Hopewell says. To start with, why did nopt he go to leave abroad himself. I tell you why, he would not secure a job in his supposed field, journalism. As it is he is unemployed as a journalist. Tweeting is not journalism. The suggestion that going abroad solves people's problem is misleading. People should ask themselves why there are unemployed people in those countries. Job is the care sector favour females and its difficult to leave those jobs for other careers is difficult because of the cost involved in terms of money and time. You might end up a prisoner of circumstances, i.e. you may never earn enough to set base in the country and to send home. If people abroad advise you to stay at home , listen, they have good reason.

@anonymous....if you do your research well you will find out that Hopewell chinono is living good life now, he owns houses worth thousands of dollars in leafy suburbs and he has money that's why he is always traveling by plane to different countries....he worked for all of it. he isn't forcing anyone to leave the country but he is just giving advice as a concerned citizen. he said he once worked in diaspora doing different jobs until he was able to make a living then he came back..it's better for people to go and try to make a living in the diaspora than to sit here in Zimbabwe jobless with the hope that things will change, nothing will change in Zimbabwe. most people in Zimbabwe in their early to late 40s are unemployed, they live in 1to 2 rented roomed and struggle to make ends meet and mostly are a burden to the ones who are in diaspora as they expect remittances every here and there

Where did Hopewell work? You need to ask where and how did he get his money. Everything he claim is in the past. He never says where he works today. No twitter odes not pay him. So the question is how does he lead his life.

Zimbabwe has been facing problems since 1983 when the government massacred more than 20 000 Zimbabweans in an ethnic genocide. Your failure to recognize that genocide as the root of all the problems means you're not a media practitioner.
Citizen · 1 year ago
You're right that Gukurahundi is one of the issues but it's never the root cause of "all the problems." You're just emotional and barking at the wrong tree.

Inga there was unity accord signing that propelled this economy to become a jewel of Africa till until the birth of Southern Africa as Mandela became an icon from 27yrs imprisonment that's when everything got fluffed since a new African nation with infrastructure and well resourced was born haisi mhosva yedu that gave Gushas to get into plaaz or Prazero farms as a model to have us recognisable and stir African Revolution, and envy of many nations, Hence Zimbabwe lives on even under debilitating harsh proclaimed targeted Sanctions, we rowing past through those tides against all odd without having us aground Nhoto yako iwe muverengi achatuka Ndati kana uchizotuka katoto kako🤪

U can't fight with a state which kills its own pple bcz they are asking for a beta life.i can't leave my son to waste his time fighting ZANU PF bcz the end result is him gting killed by these selfish old madalas, who cannot even give space to upcoming youths.imagine for how long most of them hv been in gvnmnt but still the economy is failing ,but look at them ,they are filthy rich, now they are busy employing those failed youths into army, just for there own gain.they fight against the highly educated youths who fight their oppression.they cnt employ a youth with a degree to be a mere soulder.so those youths with there degrees should leave the country for a better future.
Anonymous · 1 year ago
I submit that we let the kids leave and make a better life elsewhere. Let us madhalas remain in Zimbabwe fight for a better country into which our children and grand children will return to settle. After all we are too old to be in foreign lands and to start a new life and work
