Govt Says Student Teachers Required To Learn Three Local Languages

Teachers are now required to learn at least three local languages other than their own so that they will not be limited by language to discharge their duties, reported CITE.

This was said by the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology, Amon Murwira, while responding to a question by Gwanda South MP Omphile Marupi (ZANU PF).

Marupi had asked why the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education continued to deploy teachers who cannot speak local languages. He said:

My question is directed to the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education regarding the state of affairs concerning teachers.

We find that teachers who cannot communicate in local languages are deployed to teach in communities, particularly at elementary level Grade 1.

In response, Murwira said his ministry is implementing a policy to ensure that all teachers who graduate from teachers’ colleges a multilingual. He said:

I wish to thank the Hon. Member for this very important question. You would know that since 2019, the policy for training teachers is now requiring all enrolled teachers at a Teachers’ College to learn three more languages other than their own.

What this means is that a person or a teacher who graduates from the Teachers’ College is able to operate in areas where they are competent in terms of language, but what we are also doing is increasing the pool of Zimbabweans who are multilingual.

It therefore means that this question, as we go into the future, will not become a question.

Minister of Legal, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi said that Government policy is that junior grades in primary school should be taught in their mother language. Said Ziyambi:

Indeed, the Ministry now has a policy of ensuring that, that should not happen. You cannot send a teacher to teach Grade 1 or ECD classes when they do not understand the particular language,” he said.

The thrust is now that even the learners in ECD must be taught in their mother language and as they progress, you introduce the other languages.

If something like that is still happening, I think it needs to be brought to the attention of the relevant authorities for corrective action to be taken.

In 2022, the Government said it would withdraw teachers who are not conversant with local community languages in a move meant to ensure that learners in early childhood development (ECD) are taught in their mother language.

The announcement was made after some communities, mainly where minority languages are spoken, raised concerns over the deployment of teachers who do not speak local languages, particularly in primary schools.

The country recognises 16 official languages, but most schools were mainly teaching Ndebele and Shona.

The Zulu population alone is 12 million people. Zimbabwe's population is 15 million. If we add to the Zulu population the Xhosa, Swati, South African Ndebele, Matebeleland Mthwakazi Ndebele, you have close to 35 to 40 million Southern Africans who speak and understand Nguni. Add Southern Mozambicans, some Malawians the spread and dominance is overwhelming. So, overall Nguni (Zulu/Ndebele/Xhosa) overwhelm the Shona population more than ten fold in Southern Africa. SADC is talking a out regional integration. Relaxing borders etc. So, this Shona nonsense should stop. You have no choice but to be forced to learn the regions dominant language. The future of the region is certainly and definitely not Shona. What with an economically collapsed and landlocked Zimbabwe with no easy access to the sea!!!

stop hallucinating and accept reality the Shona people are respectful loving caring compassionate but don't take that for granted. we can confiscate all cattle in matebeleland bcoz the animals belonged to our ancestors who were raided by yours truly when he emigrated from South Africa. if you're sick and tired of living in Zimbabwe the road is open just go back where you came from no one is holding you back.

1. ALL MENIAL JOBS SHOULD BE FOR LOCAL PEOPLE. 2. ALL SKILLED JOBS SHOULD DEMAND AN AFRICAN LANGUAGE, OTHER THAN ONES MOTHER TONGUE. 3. ALL GOVT SCHOLARSHIPS SHOULD BE PROVINCIALISED AND SELECTION BE BASED ON THE 16 OFFICIAL LANGUAGES. 4. EXCEPTIONS TO THE ABOVE SHOULD ONLY BE FOR SCARCE HIGHLY SKILLED, TECHNICAL OR SENIOR LEADERSHIP OR MANAGERIAL POSITIONS.

In fact. African language competence should be one of the qualifications in a job across the country. If you can only speak and or understand your mother tongue, you should ONLY work in your home area. Unless the position is highly technical or very senior.

I saw the headline and thought having 3 total is not too bad. Including English, most Zimbos are at 2 anyway... Then I actually read the article! What a joke 🤣. They seriously expect every teacher to add 3 completely new languages as instructional mediums? Who on earth has the mental bandwidth for this? Yes, Polyglots exist but decreeing them into existence at this scale? I wonder if gov is gonna do anything to make it worthwhile for teachers or maybe it's just their way of killing off a profession already under-siege

Ramaphosa speaks all 11 of SA Official languages. It's not about mental ability. It's about tribalistic attitudes, especially with Tshona people. Learning anything in life is about effort. That is why you end about being a Doctor yet you were not born a Doctor. You knew zero about Medicine!

Education 5.0 at its outset purported to be equipped with a plethora of languages including Mandarin, Swahili to name a few most of which were deemed compulsory that was the last time i heard of that or i stand to be corrected.

Will ever introduce languages from MaNdebeleland in MaShonaland?
Anonymous · 1 year ago
Learning more local languages should be encouraged but optional. Government will again reverse this unreasonable and not well thought out decision as they did with the grade 7 holiday banning circus recently.

Exactly.

Here we go again. OVERKILL! Problem is, most teachers only know 1 local language. So solution is teachers must know ATLEAST 2 local languages and be encouraged to learn even more. Why must be always go to extemes when we try to rectify problems. Its retrogressive. You don't solve the problem of your child not studying by making making him compusorily study for 6hours of the night, for example! Too much of anything, even good, is ultimately disastrous!

Ministers should at least have 2 A level passes , because reasoning dzacho unoona kut vakaperera ku grade 3 munhu wozo corresponda ava ne 30 years to attain a grade 7 certificate.. Hakuna kuri kuendwa shame

In Zimbabwe the problem over African language is the HUTUSHONAS. No other black Zimbabweans have African language problems in Zimbabwe. Only Tshonas do. Outside Zim, you notice them by their obsession with English. That is why most of them, no matter how poor cannot live in SA townships!!

This is really a problem of sending a teacher to Matabeleland, yet he doesn't speak Ndebele language. The best solution is to introduce some of the local languages from primary school level and continue with policy at teacher training level. At the moment there are few Ndebele speaking teachers because young boys and girls from Matabeleland used to prefer to go to South Africa "Egoli" than going to a college where he will spend 3/4/5 years without earning money. During the days I worked there [ 1985-1991 ] girls preferred to be married by a man who worked in South Africa [ Egoli ] irrespective of the job he was doing, than to be married by a man who worked as a teacher, driver or any good job you may think of. That is how powerful the Rand has always been. That is my story and I am sticking to it. [ THE BUSH LAWYER4CCC ].

@CHAWABVUNZA You talking shiiiiit. As usual, you Tshonas are indoctrinated with ZANU HUTUSHONA NEHANDA TRIBALISM. Whats this eGoli nonsense!? Haven't Tshonas been going KUJONI since the 1950s, 1960s WENELA DAYS? Infact WENELA recruitment was throughout the whole Southern Africa. Why always obsess about the Ndebele people and South Africa? Exactly what is wrong with you HUTUSHONAs? 99.99 percent of Zimbabweans in SA are Shona today, if you didn't know. Has that caused a shortage of Shona language teachers in Mashonaland? AND what is the relevance of women's marriage preferences in this discussion? BLOODY primitive, uneducated, silly, **** tribalistic ZANU NEHANDA HUTUSHONA GUKURAHUNDI MUNOMTAPA Gukurawundi Monkey! Rwanda recently imported teachers from Zim. Why can't Zim import language teachers from Zambia Tonga, Mozambique Shangaan, South Africa, Botswana? That teacher shortage argument is nonsense. ****!!!
