Pay Teachers Decent Salaries, ZIMTA Tells Government

The Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) has urged the Government to alleviate teachers’ suffering by paying them decent salaries.

ZIMTA acting secretary general Goodwill Taderera said that the employer should do away with RTGs-pegged salaries and pay teachers in US dollars. Said Taderera:

Things are so bad and teachers are suffering. We are getting into continuous borrowing to augment the poor salaries.

The call comes as the Zimbabwean dollar has lost value on both the formal and parallel markets which has resulted in sharp price increases.

Moreover, most manufacturers, retailers and other service providers are now demanding US Dollars.

ZIMTA has been demanding that the government reverts to the 2018 salaries which were pegged in US dollars when teachers were earning between US$500 and US$600 per month.

Other unions representing civil servants are asking for US$840 per month for the lowest-paid Government employee.

Teachers at times are a confused lott... of course they earn peanuts, but how can they be heard through their various trade unions, why not assemble a one formidable no nonsense trade union? It boggles my mind to see some teachers joining Teachers 4ED organization, that's being sold a dummy. That organization is political it only needs your vote, after that you are nothing.

I understand ZIMTA was speaking on behalf of teachers. However, I need to quickly say it is not teachers who need decent salaries. [ APA NGAACHIPINDA HAKE MUKOMANA ]. Government is paying its employees salaries which do not commensurate with good work government workers do. [ THE BUSH LAWYER4CCC ].

LETS LOOK AT THE TIMELINE 2018 - teachers getting paid US500 and above, teachers satisfied, able to buy stands and build houses ,able to buy property- ED 1 year in office 2023-teachers now living in extreme poverty , burdened by debt as their pay is not enough , unable to do anything, working for the bus fee,-ED 4 years in office ZANOIDS is this what you call improvement? 2023- teachers getting paid

i think one union to represent teachers will do the trick coz right now there seem to be confussion amongst the teachers who seem to be fighting each other becoz of many unions.one union will have one voice.
