"Teachers Dragging Themselves To Work To Avoid Punishment"

Some teacher unions say their members are not ready for the commencement of the Second Term and are incapacitated but are dragging themselves to work to avoid reprisals by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The 2023 Second Term starts today, 08 May, but unlike in previous years, teacher unions have not been urging their members to go on strike.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou on Sunday told NewsDay that teachers lack motivation to effectively discharge their duties. Zhou said:

Teachers are demotivated and have outstanding legitimate demands that have not been addressed by the PSC [Public Service Commission] emanating from their discrimination in salary increases in which other government workers have been awarded salary increases four times that of teachers.

Above all, the quantum leap of inflation and increase in basic (commodity prices) has left them virtually incapacitated.

They are parents as well and together with other parents have no money to pay for exorbitant fees paid in US dollars, particularly in boarding schools.

Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZTA) secretary-general Goodwill Taderera said:

As teachers, we have gotten used to the government ill-treating us, particularly on salaries.

So in terms of preparedness, the teachers are not very much prepared, but they are sympathetic to the learners.

Taderera added that teachers were going to work to evade punishment from their employer.

Last month, the Government awarded civil servants a 100 percent salary increment but it has been rendered worthless by the precipitous fall in value of the Zimbabwe dollar on the parallel market.

Before the salary increment was announced, the rate was roughly US$1: ZWL$1 800 but it has since moved to US$1:2 700.

The Government also increased the COVID-19 allowance to US$250 for all civil servants excluding those in the health sector, up from US$200.

Civil servants are, however, demanding US$840 per month.

@Sorojena With lads like you who have a forward mentality our Zimbabwe might have a hope ! @Headmaster When you say 70% of the population resides in the rural areas aren't you just supporting an old age lie used by the ruling party to rig elections? Besides that it means they is need for modernasition of those areas. That is why to me Zimbabwe politics is taboo because it has more slogans than policies and it's implementation, that is why I am non aligned I speak the truth! Teachers don't deserve any pay rise as long as they is no industry to absorb the graduates! A hard and true fact, LET THE MASS STRUGGLE AND THE MINORITY REIGN - that is democracy for you kkkkk

Our teachers are inviting online teaching system's and update centres. Their job is under threat and they must be careful to stop jeopardizing their field lest they become redundant.

No I don't agree with u Jack Sparrow. You are limiting your scope pakuona zvinhu. In developing countries esp in Africa u can't rule out teachers. Remember in Zim 70% of it's population resides in the rural areas which means 3 quarters of the country is still rural were there is no electricity and all those facilities needed for online learning. The teacher is the one who give guidance to the learners. Ndokuti zvifambe. In developed countries teachers are still there in schools and quite a number of them are needed. Remember the British gvt was recruiting teachers from African countries.

@captain jack Sparrow. Iwe usanyepe these learners pasina ma teacher zvinhu hazvifambe. The most advanced economies dzichine ma teacher as we speak but those are the countries with the highest technology. A teacher is always needed no matter what. Ndiye anojekesera zvinhu vana like what an Apostle does to the believers despite the fact yekuti bhaibheri munhu wese anenge ainaro.

If the supply chain outnumbers the demand the value of the good is meagre. The teaching profession has been eroded by the low standard of candidates that are enrolled at teachers college, imagine a person with 5 O level certificate is enrolled to train as a teacher, I'm not being sarcastic but it shows a lack of professionalism soo hence why should the government bother to award a hefty pay rise to an institution that it knows full well kuti it's unprofessional and irrelevant in this digital age. Teachers are outdated as the post man kkkkkkk

United we stand divided we fall. Very true about the whole Zim crisis. The majority is failing to unite against a ruling minority. The zanupf ruling elite is a small group of less than ten people and they are controlling 15 million people who are divided. If the 15mln unite today, their misery will be gone today. The ten people have managed to divide 15mkn people to their benefit. If teachers unite and don't go to work for just one week, close all schools for just one week, the gvt will definately capitulate. But they are divided, so many unions simply mean no unity and the employer takes full advantage of that
