Zimbabwe's 43rd Independence Commemoration Marred By Decline In Freedoms - Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) says as Zimbabweans mark forty-three years of independence from colonial rule, the reality is that the civic space is shrinking rapidly.

In a statement released this Tuesday, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East and Southern Africa Flavia Mwangovya, said Zimbabwean authorities have criminalised dissent against political activists and human rights defenders. Reads the statement:

Forty-three years after independence, authorities are still yet to guarantee in practice the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly which are increasingly being threatened despite being guaranteed under the constitution and international law.

The right to freedom of peaceful assembly has continuously been violated and undermined with the authorities refusing to give clearance for some of the main opposition party’s rallies, arresting and convicting peaceful protesters and using unnecessary and excessive force to stop protests.

As Zimbabwe approaches elections later this year, freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly have come under increasing attack.

Dissenting voices are being criminalized, with some opposition activists put in lengthy pre-trial detentions.

Authorities must stop criminalizing dissent and ensure the levelling of the playing field as the country fast approaches the elections.

The opposition must be free to carry out their campaigns and individuals and groups must be protected from politically motivated violence.

Authorities must promote, protect and uphold the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, as well as guarantee the socio-economic rights of every Zimbabwean.

Independence and the word liberation has one sole meaning of setting pple free, thus none of these two words can be correctly used in a country with shrinking democracy like Zimbabwe!!! That's a deliberate distortion and or misinterpretation of words which is being done by political elites to confuse pple

Not yet uhuru. You vote for someone to represent you and suddenly that person becomes your boss, that's not uhuru. There is no uhuru if you get arrested for telling your elected representative that he is failing to do what you elected him to do. No uhuru if your elected representative can order you to be killed for simply telling him that you want better service. No uhuru if your elected representative cannot listen to you. If you can't demand accountability from your elected representative it means you are not independent. There is no independence for the majority of Zimboz

My cousin who happen to be my best friend came back in 1980.I was somehow felt he could be alive so I went to Dzapsi in Buhera assemble point where I searched for him but could not find him.Luckly there was a guy who heard me asking around and he told me to go to Zengesz 4 assemble point. Sure enough he was there but he looked sickly.I removed from the by force and got him treated by my doctor. He joined ZNA but died in 2006 , pauper and I feel he died for nothing.

Sadam Hussein failed to follow UN protocols as ZANU PF, so do you expect UN to only function towards removal of targeted sanctions???

This analysis by Amnesty International is spot on. [ APA AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL YABAYA DEDE NEMUKANWA ]. It is true that political space, democratic space, assembly space and all other civic spaces are dwindling daily. I have heard so many be incarcerated for over 10 months without bail or being tried? !!!!! Churches are now being abused left, right and centre by politicians all for political votes. [ THE BUSH LAWYER4CCC ].

🤣🤣👎there is no indepence in Zimbabwe and youths born in the 90s and the ama2000s will never celebrate a fake independence day. Zanu is oppressive and we aren't born free. Only tuvana tweZanu maybe. 👏👏👏I respect the war veterans who died because they were fighting for our freedom and hoping that the generations to come would enjoy a prosperous Zimbabwe. Hapana coz Mugabe and his wife oppressed us and corruption has been destroying the economy. Human rights activists either died or got tortured. Soccer stadiums are not up to standards coz zveSport and music ndezvemarombe anongo remberera. Gold Mafia is in charge.
