Zimbabwe Ranked Among The Worst-Governed Countries In Africa

Zimbabwe has been ranked as one of the worst-governed countries in Africa by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

The organisation claimed that Zimbabwe was failing to advance political diversity, a free civil society, and free and fair elections, according to NewsDay.

Zimbabwe is ranked 29th out of 55 nations in the just published 2022 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), which measures how well each nation is run.

The only country in the SADC region ranked lower than Zimbabwe is the Kingdom of Eswatini, which is ranked 35.

Botswana sits at number five, South Africa at number six, Zambia 24 and Mozambique sits at number 26.

Zimbabwe scored badly on political and civil liberties where it was given the following scores:

a). 12.5% on freedom of association,

b). 26.9% on political pluralism,

c). 14.1% on civil society space and

d). 31.3% on democratic elections.

On a positive note, Zimbabwe scored 100% in terms of laws that protect women from violence.

The 2022 IIAG showed that governance in Africa has stagnated since 2019 due to democratic backsliding, climate change, insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation said the stagnation posed a serious threat to the continent’s decades of progress.

The research comes barely a month after the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute released another report showing a shrinking democratic space in the post-Robert Mugabe era.

27,5 ndo half ye 55 & Zimbabwe is on 29, right in the middle, vakashandisa criteria ipi to come to that conclusion which evades logic, I'm sure the worst ndo vari mu last 10, caz if we use the same criteria number 26 anenge ari amongst the best, it's just logic

@X, your grasp of statistics is poor. If you read the article carefully you will have noticed a percentage rating on 4/5 specific issues, ranging from governance, ofvwgich Zimbabwe scores a 12.5% (grading = F for Failure or in exam key, graded a U {Unclassified}) through 33% for electoral transparency to 100% for gender equality. The ranking from 1 to 55 is based on those scores. 29 is only a position not a score. i.e. its relative to other countries. To simplify, in a class where the highest score is 40/100 and lowest is 0/100, a student who comes 2nd with a mark of say 30/100 has failed but us in second position. That doesn't mean that student has passed but has done relatively well in comparison with classmates.

Zimbabwean leadership's knack of blaming everything on sanctions has been dissected by The Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Zimbabwe Democratic Institute. Both have shown the retrogression Zimbabwe has made on governance and human rights. To blame sanctions as the cause and effect of human rights abuses, trampling on people's rights and closing democratic space is simply unacceptable. ZANU cannot talk of re-engagement in good faith while closing democratic space and compromisingjudiciary while capturing law enforcementagencies. Capital flight results when investors see a skewed legal system. Zimbabwe is unlikely to attract meaningful long term investment, other than extractive (mining) ventures. We can kiss tourism good bye. Any interesting observation is the rise of Victoria Falls as a prime tourist attraction. Why? Its very far from the political seat of power. Visitors fly in , enjoy the Falls and fly out. What happened to Kariba? Mana Pools? Hwange National Park? Vumba? Gonarezhou? Great Zimbabwe? Nyanga? These used be prime holiday destinations but now are mothballed. Industry has been decimated. Agriculture, thanks to our "successful land reform " is history. From bread basket to basket case. The only uncontested election was 1980, and only because it was under international observation. Ranking 29 out of 55 IN AFRICA is damning and an embarrassment to right thinking Zimbabweans.
