Neighborhoods To Be Fined For Dumping Waste

The Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, together with the Environmental Management Agency, has launched an operation dubbed “Zero Tolerance to Environmental Crimes in Harare Metropolitan Province.”

In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Minister’s office expressed great concern about environmental crimes being perpetrated by companies, shop owners, vendors and residents in Harare City. Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa.

The operation will run for 45 days starting from the 10th of November 2022 to the 15th of December 2022 with the view of extending if the situation does improve. Reads part of the statement:

This Provincial Blitz will target institutions, shop owners, companies, vendors, public transporters, the actual passengers and the general citizenry who violate the statutory requirements. Be warned that in residential areas there will be BLOCK TICKETING of communities that have illegal dumps within their vicinity. So we urge all residents to clear illegal dumps in their areas as they face hefty tickets. This is meant to encourage communities to start protecting and caring about their own environments.

The operation is launched when undesignated dumpsites are all over the capital. Residents accuse Harare City Council of failing and or neglecting to collect garbage leaving them with no other option.

That's a non starter, we have been paying for refuse collection to council, that is their job, will must actually sue council for not collecting garbage, iri kuendepi mari yatiri kubhadhara for refuse collection, my foot will never pay a fine for garbage found near l live, l pay council bills

So if garbage is dumped near my residence it becomes my responsibility to remove it? For grown ups to come up with such ridiculous policies is pathetic and embarrassing. Even school kids know that when problem solving you identify the cause then move from there. Then we have govt employees who drive expensive SUVs coming up with something so shallow.

@Vaye vaye, true it's your responsibility to clean your surroundings including garbage dumped near your residence. In the circumstances, you have no option, but to visit the nearest hardware for purposes of buying a work suit for yourself and other associated protective clothing. Not only that, you may also have to budget for things like a wheel borough, harrow, pick, hoe, gloves, etc. Leave your surroundings dirty at your peril, @Vaye vaye !!

If refuse collection remains erratic, the proposed system of block ticketing residents will be impossible to implement. As it stands, the garbage / rubbish must be left to pile up at our houses indefinitely or until the responsible local authority decides otherwise. An efficient refuse collection is the only way to go !!
