Minister Allays Fears Of Vehicle Number Plates Shortage
Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona said the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) has adequate number plates in stock.
Mhona said his ministry fully supports the ongoing Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) operation targetting unlicensed, uninsured and unregistered motor vehicles.
He indicated that on Tuesday he will visit the CVR to understand the challenges they are facing in issuing numbers plates. Said Mhona:
The issue of vehicle number plates has become topical and I want to take this opportunity to inform the nation that we have adequate number plates in stock.
Issues of order are important in every jurisdiction and as a Ministry, we fully support the blitz by law enforcement agencies on unregistered cars which are largely contributing to the high crime rate in the country.
We don’t tolerate corruption in the issuance of number plates and tomorrow I will visit CVR to understand the challenges they are facing in issuing numbers plates.
There is no need for the public to pay extra money to get the plates.
In a statement on Monday, the Police said 2 238 motorists have been arrested since the operation was launched on Saturday.
