Injury Scuppers Nakamba's Quest For Redemption At Aston Villa
Warriors midfielder Marvelous Nakamba has suffered an injury setback that could compound his situation at Aston Villa under his new boss Steven Gerard.
The 27-year-old Zimbabwean international reportedly injured his groin in the penultimate 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg last Thursday which the Warriors lost 1-0.
Following the injury, Nakamba missed Zimbabwe’s one-all draw against Ethiopia in their final 2022 World Cup qualifier at the National Sports Stadium Sunday.
Nakamba was used sparingly by former Aston Villa coach Dean Smith and the coming on board of the Liverpool legend could breathe life into the Zimbabwean’s stuttering Villa career.
Smith was sacked last week after a string of poor results that included five consecutive defeats in the Premier League.
Nakamba struggled for regular game time under Smith, making 59 appearances, but most of them as a substitute.
He played second fiddle to more-attack minded Brazilian international Douglas Luiz.
The recent injury setback could derail Nakamba’s pursuit for a regular place in the first team when Gerard begins his tenure against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
