Zanu PF Denies United States' Allegations On MDC-A Recalls
Zanu PF has nothing to do with the recall of MDC Alliance members from Parliament as alleged by the United States of America.
This was said by party Secretary for Information and Publicity Simon Khaya Moyo during a press briefing at the sidelines of the 350th Politburo session at the party headquarters in Harare on Thursday.
U.S. Department of State spokesperson Ned Price on Monday accused Zanu PF of engineering the recall from Parliament of MDC Alliance vice president Tendai Biti and five other legislators, saying the move subverts the will of voters and further undermines democracy in Zimbabwe.
But Khaya Moyo asserted that the ruling party can only recall wayward Zanu PF members and not members of other parties. He said:
I want to state clearly that we cannot be held responsible as Zanu PF for the recall of members of other parties.
We can only recall our own members, not members of other parties. It is not possible.
It’s illegal and I don’t think it will be acceptable by any authority in Parliament, the Speaker and the rest.
So let it be very clear that we dismiss that report that we are behind the recall of members of the opposition.
We have no mandate. There is no legal instrument we can use as a party to recall members of other parties in Parliament.
Biti, formerly People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president, and colleagues Settlement Chikwinya, William Madzimire, Sichelesile Mahlangu, Regai Tsunga, and Kucaca Phulu were recalled from Parliament on 17 March 2021.
Zanu PF Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda announced the expulsion of the MDC Alliance MPs last week.
