ED Predicts Bumper Harvest, Food Surplus

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said the country is set for a bumper harvest that will ensure national food security with the possibility of a surplus this 2020/21 summer cropping season.

He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking at the National Heroes Acre during the burial of former Zimbabwe ambassador to Mozambique, Douglas Nyikayaramba who he said helped shape agricultural programmes such as Command Agriculture and Pfumvudza/Intwasa. Said Mnangagwa:

He leaves this world when the sector which he helped shape and move, has made a very promising performance this season.

The impact of the innovative Pfumvudza/Intwasa Programme has been encouraging. Equally, our large-scale commercial farmers have done well.

We are set for a bumper harvest, taking our nation to full food security, with the possibility of a surplus.

In tribute to him, we must continue on this up-and-up agriculture path. Indeed, programmes are underway to ensure that our agriculture sector is climate-proofed through the construction of more dams.

Officials have projected at least 3 million tonnes of maize to be produced under the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme.

Meanwhile, heavy rains across the country resulting in soil erosion, leaching of nutrients and waterlogging of farmland could have a negative impact on expected yields.
