ZCTU Tells Workers To "Get Ready For General Strike"
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has told workers to prepare for scheduled “general strikes” amid poor salaries and working conditions concerns.
The call comes barely hours after the announcement that the government has announced a 40% cost of living adjustment, which workers say is still insignificant. Posting on social media, ZCTU said:
Get ready for a #GeneralStrike
FeedbackDo not allow the Government to destroy our Education sector It is our kids who will not access #education Every worker is demanding USD SALARIES So join the ZCTU every Monday #SocialJusticeStruggleDay Either we #OrganiseOrStarve
Meanwhile, teachers in government schools are already on industrial action since the resumption of classes on the 28th of September.
They are vowing to boycott classes for as long as the government has not restored their October 2018 salaries.
On average, government workers are earning an equivalent of US$35, before deductions, which is way below the poverty datum line which stood at ZWL$11 333 (USD133) as of August.
