Dates And Venues For Public Hearings On The Constitutional Amendment Bill
The Parliament of Zimbabwe has announced that the Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs will hold public hearings on the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment No.2 Bill (H.B 23, 2019) from the 15th to the 19th of June 2020.
If the Bill is endorsed, it will allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa greater control over judicial appointments.
Some have criticised the resumption of hearings saying the timing is amiss as the country is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic.
Some observed that the outcome of the hearings will not capture the reality on the ground since venues are not central hence “a deliberate strategy to exclude the common man’s view.”
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has suspended electoral activities citing the coronavirus pandemic.
