"Today's Youths Are Useless," - Thomas Mapfumo
United States-based Zimbabwean music icon, Thomas ‘Mukanya’ Mapfumo, one of the country’s living music legends known for not mincing his words, has described contemporary Zimbabwean youths as “useless.”
In an interview with Nehanda Radio’s Lance Guma, Mukanya said that the youths are wasting their energy insulting each other on social media instead of taking real action.
He criticised the youths for not standing up for human rights adding that action could have been taken following the abduction and torture as well as sexual assault on Joannah Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova, all members of the opposition MDC.
He added that it should not have been business as usual following the kidnapping of the trio.
Mapfumo left Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium after threats from the Robert Mugabe-led administration over his anti-corruption songs which were viewed as a dig at the political elites.
He briefly returned to Zimbabwe after Mugabe’s overthrow in 2017 to a massive show named ‘Homecoming Bira’ at Glamis Arena in Harare on April 28, 2018.
