Zimpapers In Mass Retrenchment Of Workers
The state-owned media group, Zimpapers has reportedly embarked on a mass retrenchment drive citing the detrimental effects of coronavirus pandemic on the company’s cash inflow.
The media giant incorporates radio stations Star FM, Nyaminyami and Capitalk and also houses newspaper titles including The Herald, Sunday Mail, Chronicle, Sunday News, Manica Post, Kwayedza, H-Metro and online content creation channel ZTN.
Speaking to Zim Morning Post, one of the affected workers who spoke on condition of anonymity said:
Well, I was advised about my contract termination today (Tuesday), and I hope things will change in the post-covid-19. It came as a surprise, but I guess management had to take an inevitable business decision under this Covid-19 pandemic.
The number of affected workers is however not yet known although reports suggest that a number of subsidiaries were affected.
Many companies closed or reduced operations following the imposition of the coronavirus-induced national lockdown.
