Tongaat Hullets Avails 2000 Ha Of Land For Winter Maize Project
Sugar manufacturer Tongaat Hullets has revealed it will avail 2000 Hectares of land for this year’s winter maize food initiative.
Tongaat usually avails an average of 300ha for the winter maize project and they have decided to bump up the hectarage this year to help revive the country’s food security.
The Herald reports that the development was also confirmed by Msvingo’s Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira who said:
We are happy that for the first time Tongaat has given us 2 000ha in Chiredzi and Mwenezi for winter farming operations this year, which is a very crucial intervention in our quest to achieve food security in Masvingo following two successive years of drought,
We are very encouraged by the response and quite a good number of farmers are willing to diversify their crop portfolio, while there is also a sweetener that these farmers will not do it for free, but will get inputs support under the Command Agriculture programme while there will also be a ready market for their produce.
The minister in part revealed the government’s plans to make the country food secure again following the 2019 drought and erratic rains that have left over 4.3 million people in urgent need of food aid.
