Bad Roads Hindering Social Welfare From Delivering Food To Starving Nkayi People - Report
Nkayi is reportedly on the brink of starvation as social welfare is failing to transport food to the area due to bad roads, CITE reports.
This was revealed at a Matabeleland North COVID-19 Provincial Taskforce meeting where GMB Regional manager Ms Podiso Mafa said:
…We have a serious challenge with Nkayi because most of our transporters are reluctant to ply that route because of the bad state of roads. Very, very few transporters want to go to Nkayi because of the terrain honourable minister. I think something has to be done or else we will fail to move that grain. Stocks are there in Bulawayo depot but we are failing to get transporters who are willing to go to Nkayi.
FeedbackCITE spoke to Matabeleland Minister Richard Moyo who said they had engaged the transport ministry to try and get the road graded to allow transporters to access Nkayi and deliver maize.
Villagers in Nkayi, on the other hand, said they usually contribute money to get the food to Nkayi as social welfare gives the same excuse every year that transporters are refusing to go to Nkayi because of the bad roads.
