Ministry Of Finance Given An Ultimatum After Snubbing Command Agriculture Hearing

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has been given “the last chance” to appear before the Public Accounts Committee after the Ministry ignored the hearing on Command Agriculture.

The chairperson of the committee, Tendai Biti said that the principal director of budgets, Mr Churu and the director of Capital expenditure, Mr Fidelis Ngorora, as well as the Accountant General, had been summoned by Parliament for investigations with regards the matter. Biti added:

The business of parliament super cedes anything else…Our oversight role as defined by the constitution is very clear, Parliament exercises serious oversight role over all public institutions and persons.

We’re giving the Ministry of Finance one more last chance before we direct the Clerk of Parliament to issue a warrant of arrest as he is permitted to do in terms of the Parliamentary Privileges Act.

Reports suggest that the last farming season’s Command Agriculture money was abused by stakeholders including Sakunda Holdings.

This is happening when the country is facing severe starvation as there is a huge shortage in maize and wheat due to drought which affected the farming season, something the missing US$3 billion could have prevented had it been put to good use.
