Kariba Power Station Could Be Shut Down By October
The Minister of Energy and Power Development, Joram Gumbo, revealed that the water levels at Kariba Dam have gone down so much that power generation could be halted by October.
Speaking from his offices in Harare on Friday, Gumbo said that Hwange Thermal Power plant has its own challenges, which may force the government to implement load shedding in the near future. Said Gumbo:
The water levels at Kariba have gone down to the extent that we may not be able to generate any power by October if we don’t manage our water well.
FeedbackWe are also having challenges at Hwange because of problems of coal supply caused by the breakdown of machinery which has become very, very old.
That has now forced us as a Ministry to make sure that we look at other means to make sure that the nation does not go dark.
As a result, we have licensed over 34 companies to provide solar into the country. As a warning, we might be going for load shedding.
