Mutare Man Jailed 8 Months Over Maintenance Arrears

A Mutare man has been jailed for 8 months for failing to pay maintenance for his 3 minor children’s upkeep. The man has defaulted since 2016. Mutare Magistrate, Tendai Mahwe sentenced Tenderai Zisengwe (40) to 8 months in prison.
Magistrate Mahwe said that Zisengwe’s offence was a serious one, as he had been irresponsible towards his children. He was also in contempt of court for his failure to pay $110 every month towards his children’s upkeep.
The magistrate also ordered Zisengwe to pay the maintenance arrears in the sum of $2 970 immediately or stay in prison for eight months.
Zisengwe said that he failed to pay maintenance due to financial constraints as he had been unemployed since 2016.
