Presidential Guard Soldier Accused Of Burning Bus, Stealing Motorbike During Protests
A soldier attached to the Presidential Guard Unit allegedly torched a ZUPCO bus and stole a motorcycle during countrywide protests that broke out on January 14.
The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) officer, identified as Lawrence Madamombe (22) pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Harare magistrate Francis Mapfumo.
Madamombe is charged alongside his two accomplices, Dennis Maguri (29) of Rydle Ridge Park and Kudakwashe Gapare (22) of Whitecliff North, who also pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The trio allegedly barricaded the Harare-Bulawayo road on January 14 near Whitehouse Shopping Centre. The stopped a ZUPCO bus with registration number AEG 3955 that was travelling towards Harare.
They forced the passengers to disembark from the bus and set it on fire. Madamombe then allegedly stole a blue Yamaha 50 motorbike which was parked within a service station.
