Lecturers at NUST go on strike citing gross mismanagement

Lecturers at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) are reported to have gone on industrial action citing poor working conditions and differences with the university’s management. The Nust Educators Association (NUSTEDA) in a statement said:

The NUSTEDA executive hereby announces an immediate industrial action in both parallel and conventional programmes from today (13 September), until issues affecting NUST have been resolved. Members who attended today’s NUSTEDA General Meeting highlighted that the existence of the Union is under threat, and current working conditions are untenable and they pose a threat to the health and safety of academic members of staff and students.

The Union resolved that a letter should be written to the Chairman of Council to this effect, and copied to management, against whom complaints are being launched. It was also highlighted that these complaints are to be themed “Gross Mismanagement.

It was indicated that it was insensitive for the current management to be mainly concerned about what is contractually due to them (vehicles, sabbatical and contact leaves, etc) and to fund these obligations using money generated from tuition fees (instead of money from treasury), whilst academic facilities and programmes continue being under-resourced
