British Embassy joins United States embassy in expressing concern over Human Rights situation in Zimbabwe
Ongoing case of Pastor Evan Mawarire
The Embassy shares the concerns expressed about the case of Pastor Evan and the general situation of human rights defenders in Zimbabwe.
We have taken significant steps since Pastor Evan’s arrest on 1 February to monitor the case and to make representations to the Government of Zimbabwe. We have raised the case on three occasions, with the Hon Deputy Foreign Minister on 2 February, with the Deputy Prosecutor General on 7 February and with the Hon Minister for ICT, Postal and Courier Services on 8 February. We have also made a number of short statements on our twitter channels (@UKinZimbabwe, @CatrionaLaing1 & @UKSimonT).
FeedbackOur message to government in public and private is clear, that the international community is watching this case with intense interest, that the Constitution of Zimbabwe should be upheld and there should be no political interference in the case.
We are attending the Bail hearing scheduled for 8 February.
