The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is implementing a strict no-mobile-phone policy for officers on duty, permitting cellphone usage only during breaks and lunch periods.
In a memorandum dated October 31, 2024, addressed to all stations in Masvingo Central District, the Officer Commanding expressed concern that, despite repeated directives prohibiting cellphone use while on duty, many commanders have failed to enforce this policy effectively. Reads the memo:

With immediate effect, no member is allowed to be in possession of a cellphone whilst on duty. Cellphones should only be used during break and lunch times.
Once a member is found with a cellphone whilst on duty, the Officer in- Charge of the said member will be put to task.
Upon commencement of duty, the Officer in-Charge should take possession of the cell phones and lock them in the safe or cabinet.
All stations standard operation procedures should contain a clause governing the use of cell phones whilst on duty and members should acknowledge having read and understood the SOPs.

The directive may pose challenges for police officers if they are not provided with radios. Officers say they rely on their phones to call for backup, request ambulances at accident scenes, and coordinate transportation.

ZRP Implements Strict No-Mobile-Phone Policy For Officers On Duty

Promise Nzima, a member of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee (NWC) at the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Zhombe, and his accomplice, Innocent Matongo, a duly attested member of the ZRP, were arraigned before the High Court in Gokwe on charges of culpable homicide.
On December 22, 2023, Nzima arrested the now-deceased person on assault charges and escorted him to ZRP Mkobogwe Base, where he assaulted him with a knobkerrie.
At 1 AM, Matongo arrived and further assaulted the handcuffed individual using a switch, knobkerrie, and open hands.
As a result of the assault, the victim sustained swollen legs, head scars, and a swollen left eye. He was referred to the hospital, where he died on December 30, 2023.
A post-mortem examination concluded that the cause of death was brain injury, brain contusion, and severe head trauma.
Both Nzima and Matongo were convicted and sentenced to eight years imprisonment each, with two years suspended.

A member of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee and a police officer in Zimbabwe were jailed for six years for killing a suspect. The suspect was assaulted with a knobkerrie and other objects, leading to his death. The victim had swollen legs, head scars, and a swollen eye. He died in the hospital due to brain injury and severe head trauma. Both the NWC member and police officer were sentenced to eight years in jail, with two years suspended.

NWC Member, Police Officer Jailed 6 Years For Fatally Assaulting Suspect

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has expressed disappointment over the limited response to the 2024 Firearms Amnesty on Voluntary Surrender of Firearms and Ammunition programme.
From 1 to 13 September 2024, only eight firearms were surrendered nationwide under the amnesty programme aimed at encouraging the voluntary return of firearms and ammunition.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that the Firearms Amnesty, which began on 1 September 2024, is set to run through 30 September 2024. He said:

To date, only eight firearms have been surrendered to the Police throughout the country.
The Police is concerned with reports of armed robberies throughout the country which show that unregistered firearms and ammunition are in the wrong hands. These are most likely being used to commit criminal acts.
We urge the public to take advantage of this opportunity to surrender firearms and ammunition voluntarily, without fear of questioning or arrest by the Police.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police encourages companies, farmers, miners, hunters, individuals, gun dealers or gun clubs, and security companies who are no longer authorised to possess firearms or ammunition to surrender them to the nearest Police Station.
Licensed firearm holders are reminded to update their records and notify the authorities of any changes in residential or business addresses.

Commissioner Nyathi said the ZRP will maintain rigorous checks and verifications at residential and business premises suspected of housing illegal firearms throughout the amnesty period.
He also issued a stern warning to the public: once the amnesty period concludes, a nationwide operation will be launched, leading to arrests for illegal possession of firearms or ammunition.
Commissioner Nyathi urged citizens to take advantage of the amnesty by voluntarily surrendering any firearms and ammunition they may possess, adding that such cooperation is crucial for ensuring public safety.

The Zimbabwe police are sad because only 8 guns were handed in during a special program. They want people to give in their guns to stop crime. The program runs until the end of September, then they will start to arrest people with illegal guns. They want everyone to follow the law and keep everyone safe. Police will be checking houses for illegal guns. So, it's better to hand in any guns you have now and be safe.

Only Eight Weapons Surrendered Under Firearms Amnesty - ZRP

Some 11 villagers in Nkayi, Matabeleland were flogged and forced to sing war songs in Shona by Zimbabwe Republic Police officers, human right lawyers have said.
Posting on X today, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said the villagers were beaten as part of “a brutal crackdown” apparently to investigate theft of diesel.
Said the <a href="https://x.com/ZLHRLawyers/status/1833478133162643927">ZLHR post</a> in part:
<blockquote>
The Nkayi villagers have asked ZRP authorities to take remedial action against some delinquent police officers, who ill-treated them by severely assaulting them &amp; coercing them to sing some liberation songs…
In a letter of complaint written to the Officer-In Charge of Manoti Police Station by the Nkayi villagers’ lawyers Jabulani Mhlanga &amp; Prisca Dube of ZLHR, the villagers protested against the conduct of the police officers for conducting a violent operation across 3 homesteads belonging to the Sibanda, Ncube &amp; Lunga families, under the pretext of investigating a case of alleged theft of diesel belonging to Oscar Mawarire, local entrepreneur.
Mhlanga &amp; Dube stated that the ZRP officers, who were armed with a rifle, truncheons &amp; whips, unlawfully assaulted the villagers including a minor, using excessive force &amp; without just cause. In addition, Mhlanga &amp; Dube stated that the villagers were coerced into singing some liberation songs in Shona language &amp; were further assaulted for allegedly failing to sing the songs correctly.
The ZRP officers, Mhlanga &amp; Dube said, rummaged through the villagers’ homesteads even though they did not have search warrants authorising their actions &amp; proceeded to seize various tools from the homesteads, alleging that they were weapons that were used by the villagers in committing some criminal activities. 
The human rights lawyers said although Mawarire, who is the complainant in the matter, informed the ZRP officers that the villagers were not the people whom he suspected of stealing his diesel, the law enforcement agents insisted on arresting the villagers &amp; subsequently, 7 of them were apprehended &amp; taken to a police post located at Kana Mission. The villagers, Mhlanga &amp; Dube said, were not given an opportunity to wear their shoes or warm clothing &amp; neither were they informed of their rights at the time of being apprehended.
The ZRP officers reportedly threatened to make an example of the villagers in order to deter “Ndebele thieves” from crossing into “Shona territory” &amp; were once again subjected to further physical abuse &amp; forced to sing more liberation songs. At the police base, the villagers were made to sleep on concrete floors, without the provision of blankets and with no ablution facilities, with men being handcuffed to each other.
The villagers were all released on 15 July after being ordered to pay US$30 each per person by a police officer, who only identified himself as Dube but were not issued with any receipts acknowledging payment of what was supposed to be an admission of guilt fine &amp; were also not furnished with some request for medical report forms in order for them to seek medical attention at government-run medical facilities.
The villagers only received medical treatment for their injuries at a private medical facility and afterwards engaged Mhlanga &amp; Dube, who on 1 August wrote a letter of complaint to the Officer in Charge of Manoti Police Station demanding that the law enforcement agency conduct an investigation into the ill-treatment &amp; assault of the Nkayi villagers &amp; take remedial action against the perpetrators of such brutality.
The human rights lawyers protested against the violation of the villagers’ fundamental rights including the right to liberty, right to dignity, the right to bodily &amp; psychological integrity, protection from cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment &amp; the right to equality &amp; non-discrimination, all enshrined in the Constitution. The conduct of the ZRP officers, Mhlanga &amp; Dube said, amounts to a serious breach of their constitutional mandate &amp; hence the perpetrators of the brutal assault of the villagers should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The development has angered who have referred to this as “Gukurahundi all over again”.

ZRP officers in Zimbabwe beat up some villagers in Nkayi, Matabeleland, and made them sing war songs in Shona. The police were investigating a theft case. The villagers were hurt and forced to sing the songs by the officers. Human rights lawyers are now involved and demanding action against the officers. The villagers were arrested, mistreated, and made to pay money before being released. This incident has upset people, who are comparing it to a past injustice called Gukurahundi. It is considered tribalism and discrimination against the people of Matabeleland.

ZRP Officers Beat Matabeleland Villagers, Force Them To Sing War Songs - Human Right Lawyers

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fire incident that occurred on Friday afternoon at the ZRP Southerton Police Station complex.
The complex houses two key police units – the Duty Uniform Branch (DUB) and the CID Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS).
According to a statement issued by the police, the fire originated from an electricity pylon situated close to the property and quickly spread throughout the yard.
In the process, a total of 12 vehicles parked within the police station complex were severely damaged and burned.
The ZRP has not yet disclosed the potential cause of the fire and no injuries to police officers or other personnel have been reported so far. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms that investigations are being conducted in connection with a fire incident which occurred this afternoon at the ZRP Southerton Police Station complex which houses the Duty Uniform Branch (DUB) and CID Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS). A statement issued earlier on Friday by the City of Harare reads:

Initial reports about the inferno at Southerton Police Station are that it started as a grass fire and then engulfed vehicles parked in the Vehicle Theft Squad yard damaging seven Trucks, one bus and four light motor vehicles. Our fire brigade managed to contain the fire and used approximately 21000 litres of water. The City firefighters once again did a splendid job to contain a fire which was threatening to escalate.

Mnangagwa Retires 67 Senior Police Officers

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has refuted claims by some junior police officers that they have not been given new uniforms for this year’s independence celebrations parades.
This follows reports that junior police officers are attending this year’s independence celebrations inspection parades wearing clothes that do not match to protest against an alleged critical shortage of uniforms within the force.
In a statement issued this Tuesday, April 16, ZRP Senior Staff Officer [Press and Public Relations] Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the claims are false.
Asst Comm Nyathi said that claims about a shortage of political uniforms are being spread by police officers who are driving a “certain agenda”.
He asserted that all police officers taking part in the 2024 Independence Day Parades at National or Provincial levels have been allocated new uniforms.

For the record, all police officers taking part in the 2024 Independence Day Parades at National or Provincial levels have been allocated new uniforms.
The members will wear a specific dress order which will be determined by Officer Commanding Police Provinces.
In the same vein, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges journalists to be cautious with some rogue police officers who are in the habit of using social media and some media houses to create confusion in the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is ready to give the media the specific names of all members participating in the forthcoming 2024 Independence Day Parades and the nature of the uniform each member has received.

ZRP Refutes Police Uniform Shortage Claims

Police in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province have advised residents to register their houses with them if they intend to travel during this festive period so that the police can constantly monitor the properties to reduce cases of housebreaking during their absence, reported <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/register-properties-if-intending-to-travel-police/">The Sunday News</a>.
Speaking at a Press conference on Thursday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Bulawayo Province Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said residents can register their houses with the police for free. She said:

During the festive season many people will be travelling for holidays leaving their homes without anyone to look after or monitor them, we thus encourage the residents to come forward to the police station and register their houses to be guarded by the police during their absence.
The police will be patrolling at the location with the registered houses checking if there are no signs of a break-in.
The registration and patrolling are free and the residents need to register to curb incidents of theft while they are on vacation.
</blockquote>
Assistant Insp Msebele also advised those leaving their homes for the holidays to avoid announcing that they will be away on social media platforms as criminals can view the posts and take advantage of their absence. She said:

Criminals can follow our lives on social media, let us desist from posting our whereabouts and as we go for the holidays, let’s alert our neighbours so that they are aware of our whereabouts and also look out for our homes on our behalf.
</blockquote>
However, the offer by the Police may find few takers as some citizens do not trust police officers, not because they are incompetent but because some of them have been involved in criminal activities.
In recent years, serving security officers have been arrested for violent crimes such as armed robbery and burglary.
For instance, Detective Constable Sinikiwe Ndlovu, a female police officer from the CID Stores in Bulawayo was arrested for her alleged involvement in a Nedbank heist.
The burglars broke into a Nedbank branch in Bulawayo, stealing more than US$270 000 and R2 million.
Ndlovu is suspected of assisting the thieves by providing guidance and communication during the crime.
She allegedly received a Honda Fit vehicle as a reward for her involvement. 
Ndlovu was charged with defeating and obstructing the course of justice.

Police Advise Residents To Register Properties If Intending To Travel

Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Matabeleland South Province have been accused of extorting money from travellers at Beitbridge Border Post.
Junior officers are also accused of bribing their superiors stationed at the CID headquarters in Gwanda to be deployed to Beitbridge, where there they engage in corruption.
The allegations are contained in a complaint seen by the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200021178/police-investigate-corrupt-beitbridge-detectives">Southern Eye</a> and lodged at the Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) in Harare by an anonymous source.
Assistant Commissioner Peter Sibanda, the officer commanding Operation No To Cross-Border Crime, confirmed receiving the complaint to the publication. He said:

We have seen the anonymous complaint, we are investigating the matter.
</blockquote>
The letter of complaint titled Corruption At CID DHQ Mat South reads in part:
<blockquote>
I want to bring your attention to the corrupt activities happening at Beitbridge Border Post being done by CID DHQ details.
The DCIO is deploying DHQ details from Gwanda to lucrative points at Beitbridge Border Post on a fortnight rotational basis.
The details work at the border siphoning money from motorists/smugglers/omalayitsha just for self-aggrandisement. This has been going on for over a year now.
It is surprising to note that commanders are now the instigators of corruption instead of shunning corruption.
May your high office put an end to these corrupt activities before it gets out of hand.

According to Transparency International Zimbabwe (TIZ)’s national bribe payers index study for 2021, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) was ranked as the country’s most corrupt government department.
The ZRP’s perceived corruption rate stood at 38.9%, significantly higher than other departments.
The Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) followed with an 18.9% corruption rate, while local authorities (urban and rural councils) ranked at a comparatively lower 5.1%.

Police General Headquarters Receive Complaint On Alleged Corruption In Beitbridge

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) have launched an operation to “stop and search” vehicles on major highways during the festive season.
Speaking at the festive season road safety awareness campaign launch in Harare, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they want to minimise road traffic accidents. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020958/police-vid-tscz-launch-traffic-blitz">NewsDay</a> quoted Nyathi as saying:
<blockquote>
I want to reiterate, that we will take action. It is not about just driving. It is being safety conscious and responsible on the country’s roads.
We need our drivers to change their attitudes and realise that they play a key role in terms of the safety of Zimbabweans and visitors during the festive period.
</blockquote>
Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Joshua Sacco urged the VID to enforce “all aspects of vehicle fitness, with particular emphasis on public transport”. Added Sacco:
<blockquote>
Law enforcers must do their work without fear or favour, and I expect that the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) will provide adequate resources to create a conducive environment for the festive season road safety awareness campaign.
It is for this reason that, within the context of the whole government approach the key players in road safety including, but not limited to the TSCZ, ZRP and VID, among others, will effective this weekend, deploy throughout the country and roll out a festive season road safety education and awareness campaign across all 10 provinces of the country.

Zimbabwe usually records an increase in road accidents during the festive period due to an increase in travel and traffic coupled with poorly maintained roads and rainy weather which reduces visibility.
Moreover, the celebration and merriment associated with Christmas may lead to irresponsible driving behaviours, such as speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Law enforcement agents have been accused of taking bribes from drivers of overloaded or unroadworthy vehicles resulting in accidents.

Police, VID And Traffic Safety Council Launch Traffic Blitz

Police have warned members of the public against taking part in unlawful gatherings in any part of the country.
In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they are aware of social media messages “openly agitating for violence”.
He said some of the messages are being circulated by people who are living outside the country and locals should not allow themselves to be used to commit crimes. Said Nyathi:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns the public against engaging in any form of unlawful gathering in any part of the country.
The police has taken note of offensive messages circulating on social media platforms openly agitating for violence and illegal gatherings, especially in Harare and Bulawayo.
The public is accordingly advised to ignore these messages. Some of the messages are being circulated by elements who are not resident in the country and taking this advantage.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is on full alert and will deal decisively with unruly elements bent on disturbing the current peaceful environment obtaining in the country.
The public should be careful against being used as a conduit to loot shops and destroy property through unlawful gatherings.
The Police strongly warns politicians who are sending false information locally and internationally about the security situation in the country that they risk being arrested.
Zimbabweans are implored to report to the police anyone circulating false messages to the public for swift action to be taken.

Police Issue Stern Warning Against Unlawful Gatherings

Police have said members of the public should go about their daily activities without any fear following the announcement of the results from Harmonised Elections held last week.
In a statement this Sunday, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they have deployed officers throughout the country to maintain law and order. Read the statement below:

As the country moves into the post-election period after the announcement of Presidential, National Assembly and Local Authority election results, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reassures the public, business and visitors to the country that the security situation remains peaceful, calm and conducive for all socio-economic activities to prevail.
Zimbabweans should feel free to go to their workplaces, to conduct family and other activities without fear or any form of intimidation from anyone.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed police officers throughout the country to maintain law and order. 
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is fully aware of attempts by some political activists to mobilize groups of people to move in small numbers and come to Harare for purported briefing and popcorn demonstrations under the guise of citizen voter audit or verification.
This has even been given credence by some social media posts obtained by the Police where some individuals and groups are openly inciting violence and issuing threats aimed at causing alarm and despondence among Zimbabweans.
The Police will not hesitate to effect arrests on such criminal elements. The public should feel free to report these criminal acts on the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp number 0712 800 197.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that the situation in the country is very calm and the public should certainly feel free to go about their day-to-day activities.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges political parties to assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country by avoiding unsanctioned car rallies, processions and other celebratory activities without notifying the local regulating authority in terms of the Maintenance of Order and Peace Act Chapter 11:23.
Any form of unlawful political gatherings will be dealt with by the police in terms of the country’s laws.
Finally, the Police continues to applaud and commend Zimbabweans for the exemplary conduct shown during the pre-election and the voting period.

ZRP Reassures The Public Of Personal Safety And Security

Police have expressed concern over killings emanating from petty issues at beer outlets, among family members and at workstations.
In a statement this Tuesday, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged members of the public to find peaceful ways of resolving differences or disputes without resorting to violence. Reads the statement:

<h2>CONCERN OVER MURDER CASES ACROSS THE COUNTRY</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with the continued loss of lives due to petty disputes, especially at beer outlets and other places where the public has access. This includes the family level and workstations.
On 23rd February 2023, Police in Zvishavane arrested Obert Vengesa Nyoni in connection with a case of murder in which Benny Mukuta died on 21st February 2023 after being assaulted with fists and booted feet following an argument during a beer-drinking spree at a bottle store at Vengesa Business Centre, Masunda.
The suspect and his friends had taken the victim’s beer without his consent. The other suspect Simbarashe Nyevhe was arrested on 24th February 2023.
Similarly, Police in Kadoma arrested a mine owner, Simbayi Zhakata (67) in connection with a case of murder where Steven Matondo (21) was shot dead with a Mossberg rifle on 24th February 2023 at Zurich 112 Mine, Arda Doreens Farm, Battlefields.
The victim and his friends had allegedly made noise by banging on the doors of several houses at the compound and this did not go well with the suspect.
In another case, police in Mazowe are investigating a murder case where Webster Ndlovu died after being stabbed indiscriminately all over the body by the suspect, only identified as Tatenda alias Random, following an argument over an undisclosed issue on 24th February 2023 at White City Mine, Chigumira Farm.
On 24th February 2023, Police in Harare arrested Peter Sani (39) in connection with a case of murder in which Ernest Kavhiya (47) succumbed to injuries sustained during a fist fight after an argument during a beer drinking binge on 28th January 2023 at a bar at Glenview 1 Shopping Centre.
In another case, on 25th February 2023, Police in Harare arrested Obey Francis Tiyago (33) in connection with a case of murder in which Munyaradzi Kambudzi (22) died on 25th February 2023 whilst admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after being struck with a snooker stick on 21st February 2023 during a beer drinking spree at a night club in Hatcliffe.
ZRP Dzivarasekwa recorded a murder case where Moses Kalungu (49) died upon admission at a local hospital after allegedly being assaulted by the suspect only identified as Chamu.
The victim was found with head injuries while lying along Gora Street, Dzivarasekwa 3.
Meanwhile, Police in Mt Darwin arrested Edson Chandoza (39) in connection with cases of murder and attempted murder which occurred on 26th February 2023 at Tsayi Village, Dotito.
The suspect and his brother Aleck Chandoza (40), who is at large, allegedly attacked their mother, Midrone Manuwere (84) and sister, Tawanda Chandoza (36) with a wooden log after accusing their mother of witchcraft.
Midrone Manuwere (84) succumbed to the injuries sustained during the attack.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that the public must exercise self-restraint when faced with disputes or disagreements with friends, relatives, or any member of society.
Communities are implored to find peaceful ways of resolving differences or disputes without resorting to violence.

Police Express Concern Over Murder Cases Across The Country

Police officers have reportedly been ordered to attend civic education meetings coordinated by the ruling party where they undergo ZANU PF ideological reorientation.
During the civic education meetings, ZANU PF officials are reportedly pleading with police officers to vote for the ruling party in the upcoming general elections.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the training to NewsDay but professed ignorance of ZANU PF’s involvement. He said:

I can confirm that the police are undergoing [civic education] training.
But as to the allegations [that ZANU PF is facilitating], I am not aware.

NewsDay reported that on Monday, 16 January, police officers from various provinces spent the day attending the “training” programme in Murewa and Chivhu in Mashonaland East province.
ZANU PF officials promised to improve cops’ welfare if it wins this year’s general elections.
The ZANU PF officials were accompanied by police commissioners and superintendents.
Police officers were made to sing ZANU PF songs and chant its slogans, reported NewsDay.
Junior police officers are reportedly angry with the development, accusing high-ranking officials of using them for their own benefit.
A message posted by a police officer on one of their WhatsApp groups read:

They (the chefs) get cars, hefty salaries, they live in mansions apa basa ravo ndere kuco-ordinator vopa maorders chete (their job is only to co-ordinate and give orders) What about us?
We get a $200 dollars salary and roam around the streets each day whole on an empty stomach. Zvimwe zvinoda kushandisa brain (Some of these issues need critical thinking).

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) political science lecturer Eldred Masunugure said State institutions should be non-partisan. He said:

If it is really happening that police are under Zanu PF training, it is unconstitutional.
It is up to the affected stakeholders to challenge that in a court of law. It is clear-cut political interference.
Political parties, watchdogs, or prospective candidates should challenge that.
That is an (un)ambiguous abuse of the Constitution.

Police Officers Forced To Chant ZANU PF Slogans | Report

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said videos circulating on social media in which two cars are involved in a street race were not shot recently but are from 2021.
The videos of the drag racing have been circulating on social media platforms in the past few days giving rise to claims that the scenes were from a recent event.
ZRP spokesperson in Harare Province, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said:

It’s a video from 2021 and it happened in Mashonaland Central. People should desist from taking everything they see on social media as factual news.
</blockquote>
In the video, a BMW and Mark X race, with onlookers cheering and taking videos.
The second video, in which a number of people are seen lying on the ground with others crying, was shot in Pretoria.
Some people on social media reportedly merged the 2021 video with the second video from South Africa in which a car crashes into a big tree.
City of Tshwane (Pretoria) Emergency Services Department Deputy Chief for Public Information and Media Liaison, Thabo Charles Mabaso released a statement confirming the accident. Said Mabaso:

A driver of a BMW Sedan ran over nine pedestrians, killing three female pedestrians and injuring the other six before crashing into a tree.
The incident occurred at approximately 5.30 PM near a traffic circle on 6th and Koch Street at Salvakop in Pretoria.
Emergency Services arrived on the scene to find multiple patients scattered around the scene with the sedan under a partially collapsed tree.
… Three female children aged about five years were declared dead by paramedics on the scene, while two female patients, of which one is nine months pregnant were transported to Steve Biko Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.
Four other female patients were also transported to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

Viral Video Of Drag Race Is From 2021 - Police

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on 6 January 2023 gave an update on road traffic accident statistics for the period 15th December 2022 to 5th January 2023. Here are the statistics:

Asst Comm Nyathi implored motorists to be cautious and adhere to road rules as schools open for the first term and companies resume full operations. He said:

As alluded to in the Police press statement issued on 27th December 2022, most Fatal Road Traffic Accidents involved private cars.
The festive period has revealed that drivers need to self-introspect and reconsider the way some are driving on the country’s roads.
The bully and unruly driving conduct shown by some drivers should stop in order to save lives on the roads.
Police reiterate that drivers must be observant and concentrate while on the steering wheel to curtail fatal road traffic accidents which have been recorded during the festive season where in some instances pedestrians were hit while standing at bus stops or walking beside the road.
In one of the fatal road traffic accidents which occurred on 18th December 2022, an unknown motorist hit a man aged between 30 and 35 years along 12th Avenue, Bulawayo at around 0200 hours on 18th December 2022. The victim died on the spot and the motorist did not stop after the accident.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should stop when involved in road traffic accidents, assist the injured if necessary and report all accidents to the Police within 24 hours.
In another accident that occurred on 25th December 2022 at 1945 hours at the 300 km peg along Bulawayo -Victoria Falls Road, a motorist who was driving a Toyota Hilux vehicle with three passengers on board towards Victoria Falls, lost control of the car and veered off the road to the left, where he ran over seven pedestrians before swerving to the right side where he rammed onto a stationary Honda Fit vehicle which had six passengers on board.
The Honda Fit vehicle overturned once and landed on its roof. As a result, three people (two pedestrians and one passenger from the Honda Fit vehicle) died, while 13 others were injured.
Similarly, on 31st December 2022 at 1000 hours, three pedestrians were killed after they were hit by a bus that had veered off the road along Zaka- Nyika Road at the 15 km peg.
As the nation gears up for social and economic activities in the year 2023, the Police implore motorists to be responsible and strive to promote road safety on the country’s roads.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to deploy police officers to curb road carnage and reckless driving conduct on the roads.
The Police need the cooperation of motorists for road safety to be realised in the country.

Police Release Accident Statistics For The Period 15 December To 5 January

Police have dismissed as fake the recruitment message circulating on social media.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Thursday warned the public that the purported recruitment message could be the work of fraudsters whose aim is to steal money from people.
In a statement, Asst Comm reiterated that ZRP does not use third parties for recruitment. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police dismisses a false message which is circulating on social media platforms on alleged 2023/ 2024 massive police applicants recruitment process.
Members of the public and all potential applicants are advised to ignore this fake message.
The public should not submit application letters, life history, copies of identity documents and educational qualifications, to anyone, third party or Officer-in-Charge at a Police Station on or before 07th May 2023, as alleged in the false message.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures the public that formal communication will be made accordingly, through the appropriate media channels, when the normal recruitment process is rolled out and open to potential applicants to submit the relevant documents.
Meanwhile, the police has launched full-scale investigations into the import and origins of the message.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that it does not engage third parties to conduct recruitment on its behalf.
The public is strongly advised to be wary of these unscrupulous elements and therefore report at any nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk on telephone number (242) 703631 on the activities of these criminals who in most cases intend to dupe innocent members of the public of their money.

ZRP Dismisses Recruitment Message

Ninenty-two (92) people died in road accidents during the festive period, that is, from 15 December to 26 December 2022, police have revealed.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that during the same period in 2021, 72 people died in road traffic accidents.
In 2021, police recorded 1 626 road traffic accidents, 62 fatal accidents, 72 deaths, and the number of people injured stood at 337.
In 2022, police recorded 1 285 road traffic accidents, 69 fatal accidents, 92 deaths and the number of people injured stood at 333. Added Asst Comm Nyathi:

On Unity Day, 22nd December 2022, a total of 107 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide, and three (03) of the accidents were fatal, where three (03) people died while 27 others were injured. 
In 2021, 144 road traffic accidents were recorded, with seven (07) being fatal, killing 10 people while 26 others were injured.
On Christmas day, 25th December 2022, a total of 119 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide, with 10 being fatal, killing 13 people and injuring 89, compared to 187 road traffic accidents recorded during the same period in 2021, with 10 fatal which killed 13 people and injured 35 others.
On Boxing Day, 26th December 2022, 88 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide, 15 being fatal and 16 people were killed while 19 others were injured, compared to the year 2021 where 103 road traffic accidents were recorded, with five (5) being fatal, seven (07) people killed while 29 others injured.
Most of the road traffic accidents occurred on highways as a result of speeding, overtaking errors, inattention, misjudgment, following too close, and recklessness on the part of drivers, who in most of the accidents recorded were trying to overtake in situations which were not safe to do so, encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic, straddled the centre lane, showed clear poor observation and control of the vehicles resulting in some hitting pedestrians who were walking on the side of the roads or standing at bus stops.
No major road accident involving public service vehicles has been recorded so far. However, the Police is concerned with the number of private vehicles involved in accidents during this holiday. 
Some of them will be overloaded while others are being used for purposes that are clearly not suitable for such use. 
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has so far impounded 2 159 vehicles for various defects.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges drivers to be cautious and promote road safety on the roads as the holiday continues. 
There is no need for one to be over-excited or reckless on the roads. The Police will continue with the current deployment level on the roads and communities till the 15th of January 2023.
We urge motorists to be responsible on the roads, to self-introspect and to be safety conscious.

ZRP Releases 2022 Festive Season Accident Statistics

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is committed to fighting all forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Speaking on the sidelines of commemorations of 16 Days against GBV, Acting Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector, Fungai Ngawagare said:

We cannot turn a blind eye to such an initiative (16 days) which is part of efforts in curbing crime.
In this regard, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is obliged to uphold the interests of children, women and men in the fight against all forms of Sexual Gender Based Violence.
Gender-Based Violence is violence involving men and women in which the female is usually the victim and is derived from unequal power relationships between men and women.
Violence is directed specifically against a woman because she is a woman, or affects women disproportionately.
It includes but is not limited to physical, sexual, and psychological harm. It includes that violence which is perpetuated or condoned by the state.

She said ZRP was working with organisations that protect the rights of vulnerable people in society which include Msasa, One Stop Centre, Childline, Family Support Trust and Social Welfare.

We Are Committed To Fighting Gender Based Violence - ZRP

Finance and Economic Development Minister, Mthuli Ncube, has announced plans to procure helicopters for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to capacitate the institution in fighting crime.
Ncube announced the plans to Parliament last week, during the budget debate with legislators, saying the government intends to improve conditions of service for police officers, starting with mobility. He said:

We have sourced US$60 million for purposes of purchasing cars, as well as motorcycles for the police, including four helicopters.
That procurement is underway now, and they will receive their cars and will be mobile.
On the issue of institutional accommodation, that is a multi-programme.
We have tried hard. Looking at the Tomlinson Depot facility; in fact, this year alone, we budgeted $230 million, and it should be complete.

Mthuli Ncube Pledges Four New Helicopters For ZRP

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says the ZWL$1.5 billion allocated to the force for the procurement of equipment in the 2023 national budget is not enough considering that the country is headed for general elections next year.
Elliot Ngirande, the ZRP deputy commissioner general, said Treasury allocated ZWL$1.5 billion for the procurement of ammunition, which was far much less than the ZWL$6.8 billion requested by the ZRP.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence and Home Affairs on the 2023 national budget presented last week by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube. Said Ngirande:

Given the impending general elections in the year 2023, the organisation has to adequately prepare for the usual public disorder situations.
… the police service is a critical stakeholder (in the 2023 elections), the proposed budget seeks to ensure that police operations are enhanced in order to achieve a peaceful environment conducive to the conduct of free and fair elections.
The pre-election period is normally associated with a hive of political activity as contesting parties scramble to mobilise support.
Police deployments are anticipated to increase in order to adequately police political gatherings.
This budget item caters for the acquisition of replacement firearms and replenishment of ammunition to adequately equip all Policeestablishments.
Arms and ammunition are a critical component in police duties which include VIP and VVIP guards and escorts, counter insurgents, hostage rescue, and escorts of precious minerals and other valuables, tracking and escorting dangerous and armed criminals, as well as protection of vital installations.

Budget Allocation Is Not Enough - ZRP

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) has criticised the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for allegedly doing nothing to stop suspected ZANU activists from disrupting a CCC Press conference in Harare on Tuesday.
There was heavy police presence outside the Media Centre in Harare where CCC was scheduled to address a press conference.
However, suspected ZANU PF members stormed into the conference room and allegedly stole CCC banners just before the press conference started and forced some CCC officials to escape through a back exit.
In a statement, CiZC accused police officers of ignoring the violence that was unfolding before them. Read the statement:

While [police officers] patrolled the entrance to Media Centre, where [CCC] was due to hold a press conference, suspected [ZANU PF] youths stormed the venue and violently kicked out the CCC officials who were yet to start their press conference.
What is clear is that [police officers] stood by and decided to pay a blind eye to the unfolding violence, a situation that unfortunately points to partisanship by the police. Police have not arrested [ZANU PF] members implicated in violence.
According to the Constitution, the police service is supposed to act in an impartial manner and in line with the dictates of the Zimbabwe Constitution.
The latest incident is not isolated. The State has continued to abuse state security agents and the judiciary for political purposes.
We implore the police to bring the perpetrators of today’s violent incident to account.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said the party will not be pushed into violent confrontations with ZANU PF. She tweeted:

Police Accused Of Failing To Prevent Suspected ZANU PF Activists From Disrupting CCC Event

<h2>Statement by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on robbery cases involving theft of motor vehicles by suspects posing as genuine transport seekers.</h2>

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with robbery cases where some motorists are falling prey to criminals posing as genuine transport seekers across the country.
Some of the motorists are losing vehicles to criminals after leaving vehicles unattended with keys on the ignition ports.
On 4th November 2022 at around 1900 hours, a 34-year-old man lost a Honda Fit vehicle registration number AFT 2657, a DSTV decoder, 13 cellphones, seven (07) power banks and personal documents, to two unknown male suspects after he had offered them a lift at Corner Chinhoyi Street and Robert Mugabe Road, Harare, on the pretext that they were going to Marimba, Harare.
Along the way, at Rugare traffic lights, the suspects attacked the complainant and stole his valuables and the vehicle. They then made a U-turn and later dumped the complainant in Msasa.
On 5th November 2022 at about 2015 hours, a 27-year-old man offered a lift to two unknown male suspects who purported to be going to Chinhoyi at Westgate in Harare.
Upon arrival at the 113 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Road, the suspects asked to be dropped off.
They then attacked the complainant and stole US$3 600-00 cash and a Honda Fit vehicle registration number AFY 4575.
On 6th November 2022 at around 0340 hours, a 22-year-old Bulawayo taxi driver was hired by two unknown suspects from Bulawayo Central Business District to Nhliziyo Shopping Centre, Entumbane.
On arrival at the shopping centre, the suspects ordered the complainant to park at a certain house.
They then attacked the complainant and robbed him of a Honda Fit vehicle registration number AFD 8145, a cellphone and US$100 cash.
On 6th November 2022 at around 0200 hours, a 45-year-old man had an altercation with five men who were in a BMW car at Cosmopolitan Race Course, Ascot, Bulawayo.
He then parked his Honda Fit vehicle registration number AFO 5439 and charged towards the BMW vehicle leaving his car keys on the ignition port.
An unknown suspect came and stole the car and drove off while the complainant was confronting the five men in a BMW vehicle.
In another case, Police are investigating a case of theft of a motor vehicle that occurred on 4th November 2022 at a car park in Warren Park, Harare, where a woman (30) had left a Toyota Wish vehicle registration number AEL 2656 for safekeeping. The complainant came back the next morning and found the car missing.
Meanwhile, on 5th November 2022, Police in Chinhoyi arrested Jealous Thomas Musariri (43) in connection with two counts of murder that occurred at Riverside, Chinhoyi on 29th September 2022.
The suspect allegedly stabbed Tinashe Nyanguwo (36) and Joshua Kadungure (37) to death, after a misunderstanding.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to be alert and stop giving lifts to strangers in their vehicles no matter the circumstances or situation.

Theft Of Motor Vehicles By "Passengers" On The Rise - Police

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has instituted mass transfers of officers countrywide, a development that the police has described as routine.
However, there are reports that rising indiscipline, incompetence, and allegations of corruption triggered the mass transfers.
Harare province on Thursday last week transferred more than 450 police officers with immediate effect.
The transfers are reportedly affecting members of the ranks of the assistant inspector, sergeant-major, sergeant, and constable.
ZRP national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the transfers to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/theindependent/local-news/article/200002310/mass-transfers-rock-police">Zimbabwe Independent</a>. He said:

That leaked police internal communication was meant for the officer commanding Harare to transfer members within his province according to police regulations.
So there is nothing sinister or alarming about those transfers because, in terms of the police regulations, officers commanding provinces have the leeway to transfer members within their provinces to address manpower shortages, performance, and also the issue of job rotation.
It’s not unique to Harare. These transfers are being effected by officers commanding provinces throughout the country and this also relates to members from the CID.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Independent reported a police source as saying massive transfers will be done at the ZRP Traffic section and the CID’s Commercial Crimes Unit (CCU) in Harare province. Said the source:

These are critical departments considering the current state of affairs on Zimbabwe’s roads which need serious policing to control the chaos and the increasing traffic volume, especially in urban areas.
There are a number of CCU officers facing corruption allegations with a number of letters having been submitted.
… We cannot ignore the fact that some of the transfers are routine especially when a member moves close to his family or requests a transfer and it is granted.
However, units like the CCU are special and one cannot just join and is then relegated to handle ordinary duties like receiving clients at the reception desk.
That means the member has been removed from where the action is and would have been found unsuitable to handle critical duties including investigations.

ZRP Institutes Mass Transfers

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the Saturday morning robbery incident at ABC Auction along Seke Road in Harare.
In a statement posted on the ZRP official Twitter page, police said four unknown suspects subdued two security guards who were at the premises before blasting five safes and stealing US$1.4 million. Reads the statement:

The ZRP is still investigating the circumstances which led to a robbery case at ABC Auction along Seke Road, Harare, on 08/10/22 at around 0130 hours, where four unknown suspects, armed with four unidentified pistols, attacked two security guards who were on duty at the premises.
They tied the security guards with shoelaces and put them under the guard of two suspects while the other two proceeded to the company offices, where they blasted five safes and stole cash and property worth US$1 400 000-00.
</blockquote>
The ABC Auction robbery becomes the second-biggest robbery after more than US$2.5 million was stolen from a ZB Bank cash-in-transit vehicle near Gwebi River in January 2021.

Police Speak On ABC Auction Armed Robbery

A safe stolen from a private school in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chihota">Chihota</a> early this month has been found dumped in a nearby forest, ZBC News reported.
The safe was stolen at UMAA Group of Schools in Chihota on the 7th of September 2022.
It is alleged that a group of 10 armed robbers pounced on the school at night, tied and assaulted eight workers before proceeding to the administration block where they used dynamites to gain entry and steal a safe.
The robbers also got away with cash amounting to US$1 255, cellphones and other valuables they stole from their victims.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland East spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the recovery of the safe and said investigations are underway.
UMAA owner, Mr Cleopas Kundiona said the safe was found a few kilometres from the school vandalised as the robbers were looking for cash. He said:

These robbers thought we had cash, so they went away with the safe only to discover there were documents.

The case adds to many more incidents of robberies in Marondera. On Friday 23 September 2022, a local businessman <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/robbers-pounce-on-businessman-rob-him-of-cash-and-kill-him/">Lucas Chimoka was killed by four armed robbers</a> at his residence at around 0200 hours. The robbers got away with US$7 900.

Stolen Safe Found Dumped In A Forest

Police in Harare have launched an operation targetting unlicensed, uninsured and unregistered motor vehicles plying the capital’s major roads.
Police suspect that the vehicles are being used to commit serious crimes such as armed robbery and hit-and-run accidents.
A memo from the Officer Commanding Police, Harare South District, Chief Superintendent, M. Majojo, reveals that the operation will also target mushikashika (pirate taxis). It reads:

It is difficult for law enforcement agencies to identify owners of unregistered vehicles after committing such crimes as they are not on the Central Vehicle Registry database.
Most vehicles plying the country’s roads are either not registered or the vehicle owners deliberately remove number plates to avoid identification.
The unregistered vehicles are being used to commit serious crimes and drivers of such motor vehicles cause chaos on the roads.
These unruly elements have reduced Harare from a Sunshine City status to a dirty and chaotic capital.
It is against this background that the district shall embark on an operation to clean up and restore sanity in Greater Harare, by arresting touts, mushika-shika operators, street car washers and car repairers operating at undesignated places.

Police said they will be impounding motor vehicles suspected to have been stolen, smuggled or used in committing crimes.

Police In Harare Launch Operation "To Restore Sanity" On Roads

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said liquor sellers who flouted COVID-19 regulations during the Easter holidays are set to lose their licences. ZRP also notified that the number of people who have died in road accidents during this year’s Easter holidays has risen to 26.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns all beer-hall, bar and nightclub operators who breached the Government’s COVID-19 regulations that arrests are being effected with appropriate action now in motion to ensure that the Liquor Licencing Board complies with the Government’s stance to revoke all licences for operators who are not complying with the law.
Operators who defied the law during the Easter Holiday in Harare, Bulawayo Gweru, Mutare and other towns are being dealt with. Police will ensure that licences confiscated are handed over to the relevant Government arms for the stipulated penalties to be effected.
The public is therefore urged to continue supplying information on these errant beer-hall, bar or nightclub operators for decisive action to be taken. Police will avail statistics on the operation in due course.

The major causes of fatal road traffic accidents have been observed to be speeding, inattention, misjudgement, overtaking errors and failure to observe road rules and regulations which can all be attributed to human error.
We urge drivers to travel at safe speeds, considering the condition of the roads and safety of other road users. Pedestrians are also being urged to be observant when crossing any road and should check either sides of the road to ensure it is safe to cross before doing so. Motorists should be patient, considerate and observant on approaching roads under construction or repair.
The public is urged to continue observing the Government’s COVID-19 health, safety and security protocols by wearing face masks, practising social distancing and sanitisation.
The Police, therefore, warns Public Service Vehicle operators who are conducting inter-city movements and not complying with COVID-19 regulations by carrying passengers exceeding the 50% threshold allowed, with some carrying standing passengers, that the law will be applied to the bus crews / operators. Pirate and mushikashika’ vehicles will be impounded and action taken on the owner as well as on the Police officers who are allowing them passage on the roads.

Liquor Sellers Flouting COVID-19 Laws To Lose Licences, Road Accident Deaths Rise

ZRP has taken the time to address the viral photo of a woman who was in custody with 2 minor children who were not wearing masks. The photo caused a public outcry on social media which prompted ZRP to release a statement saying the incident will not happen again and they will investigate the issue and find out what really happened and thereafter take remedial action.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a photo which has gone viral on social media where a woman is seen in Police holding cells with two minor children at Rhodhesville Police Station. This is really unfortunate.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is now conducting investigations with a view of finding out what really transpired and taking remedial action. The Zimbabwe Republic Police remains committed to the observance of human rights, rights of children and will ensure that police officers perform their duties in accordance with set standards, Police Client Service Charter and above all section 219 of the Constitution of the country.
This unfortunate incident will not be allowed to happen again. We appeal to members of the public to allow the police to conduct investigations so that appropriate decisions can be made.

In an undated but recent video that is circulating on social media, members of the public are seen physically assaulting police officers.
The video which was evidently taken recently because of the wet grounds, green grass in surrounding areas, and face masks used to curb spreading COVID-19 seen in the video does not shed more light on why the public was attacking law enforcement officers.
Another cop is seen trying to fight some of the people beating up his colleague before he is attacked by the mob. The relationship between law enforcement officers and the public has not been at its best for some time now.
However, people have always refrained from attacking law enforcement officers for many reasons.
