Eric Matinenga, a former Constitutional Affairs Minister, has said that Nelson Chamisa’s decision to leave the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) was rushed. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Matinenga suggested that Chamisa should have consulted key stakeholders and the public before making such a move. He proposed that MPs and Senators write a joint letter to dissociate themselves from the “fictitious” Sengezo Tshabangu-led CCC. He said:

I am advised, which advice I accept, that Nelson Chamisa was placed in such a suffocating environment that he had to conduct himself in the manner/way he did.
I give him the benefit of the doubt.
I am unable to provide detailed facts which informed that advice.
Am sure there are people who are better able to do so, if they so wish.
In my view however, the decision (for Nelson Chamisa to quit CCC) was a rushed one.
There was need to consult and get the buy in of relevant critical stakeholders. Ideally, the citizenry should have been consulted, a consultation which could not be carried out in the limited suffocating circumstances.
There are certain stakeholders and issues which must be addressed now if they were not addressed at the time the decision to remove oneself from CCC.
Parliament sits on Monday, there is time before Monday for Nelson Chamisa to meet the true CCC members, interrogate issues in a no-holds-barred manner and come to a common way forward.
I am aware that certain MPs have indicated their respective courses of action.
My suggestion is that all MPs and Senators address a joint letter to the Speaker of Parliament and President of the Senate dissociating themselves from the fictitious Sengezo Tshabangu CCC and identifying their leader of the house.
Chamisa must do a supporting letter and dare Tshabangu to recall the MPs.
If recalled, they should not contest the recalls.
There are cases before the courts challenging recalls in one way or the other.
Instructions must be withdrawn so that they are not argued when called. The by-elections on 3 February must be forgotten.

However, Peter Gift Mutasa, former President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, disagreed with the joint approach, stating that Chamisa had given each member the freedom to choose their stance. Ibbo D Mandaza, an academic, supported Matinenga’s views. Some argued that Chamisa’s decision was influenced by the challenging political environment he faced.
Some CCC Members of Parliament (MPs) have since announced their withdrawal from Parliament and pledged to support Nelson Chamisa who is expected to launch a new political party.

The Decision For Nelson Chamisa To Quit CCC Was A Rushed One - Eric Matinenga

Workers have expressed dissatisfaction with the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/08/010/treasury-reviews-paye-and-personal-income-tax/">government’s recent review of the tax-free threshold</a>, which has been increased to $500,000 starting this month. They argue that there is nothing to celebrate because the majority of workers earn below that figure. The previous tax-free threshold was $91,666, with the highest marginal tax rate of 40% applicable to salaries of $15 million and above.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Japhet_Moyo/">Japhet Moyo</a>, the secretary-general of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions/">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions</a>, criticised the government for ignoring the plight of the long-suffering workers. He stated that the new tax-free threshold fails to address the fundamental needs of workers and highlighted that anyone earning $500,000 is still below the poverty datum line. He told NewsDay:

They have done absolutely nothing. The new tax-free threshold does nothing with regards to addressing the fundamental workers’ needs.
You cannot tax the poor. Anyone earning $500 000 with the prevailing market rate is earning below the poverty datum line.

According to the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe, a family of six now requires $2.6 million per month to survive. Despite these rising costs, the average salary of the least-paid civil servants is $250,000, excluding US dollar allowances.
Various union representatives, including David Dzatsunga and Tecla Darangwe, expressed their disappointment with the review of tax brackets and called for an increase in salaries and a reduction in the tax-free threshold. They argued that the threshold should be indexed to the US dollar, considering its impact on the economy.
Obert Masaraure, the president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, criticized the review for not meeting their demands for US dollar salaries. He also raised concerns about the potential devaluation of the local currency after the elections.
Recent statistics indicate that the economy is moving towards dollarisation, with a significant portion of transactions, particularly for food purchases, being conducted in foreign currency. However, the government remains committed to the Zimdollar, despite calls for its abandonment.
A report by the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development emphasised the role of diaspora remittances in sustaining the economy, as many formal workers struggle to meet the poverty datum line.

Workers Dissatisfied With Government's Tax-Free Threshold Increase To $500,000

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)</a> this week threatened to resort to “other means” if the government fails to meet its demand for a minimum wage of US$150.
The minimum wage was agreed upon in September last year through the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF), a social dialogue platform that brings together government, business and labour to negotiate critical socioeconomic matters.
The ZCTU ultimatum over the minimum wage comes as teachers have once again threatened to go on strike demanding that the salary be paid 100% in United States dollars.
After the three social partners last year agreed on a minimum wage across all sectors, there was optimism that the nation was finally about to reach a social contract. Nevertheless, the momentum gained has been lost as a result of the government’s breach of the agreement.
ZCTU also believes that the government lacks respect for the tripartite body considering that both business and labour had to appeal to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to get his ministers to come to TNF meetings.
This is further evidenced by the failure of the government to consult its partners in the TNF when it puts in place policies that have a major bearing on the two.
Speaking at the Employers Confederation of Zimbabwe annual general meeting in Victoria Falls last year, ZCTU president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Florence_Taruvinga">Florence Taruvinga</a> said the government was undermining its partners in the TNF. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/editorials/article/200008283/tnf-could-solve-wages-impasse-if-govt-takes-it-seriously">NewsDay</a> cites her as saying:

It is hypocritical for the government to unilaterally force down the policies on people without TNF engagement. We are being undermined. It is on record that we pointed out that the government has been trivialising the TNF and taking people for granted for some time by undermining social dialogue.

ZCTU’s threats to resort to other means also come as civil servants rejected a salary offer tabled by the government during a National Joint Negotiation Council (NJNC) meeting held in Harare on Thursday.
Zimbabwe Congress of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU) chairperson Cecilia Alexander said what the government had offered was too little and embarrassing.
She said the parties agreed not to publicise the offer until an agreement has been reached.

ZCTU Threatens To Resort To "Other Means" Over Minimum Wage

Workers’ unions yesterday reiterated their call for salaries in United States Dollars (USD) with one union saying the lowest-paid worker should get US$840. 
They said United States dollar salaries were the only way to cushion workers from the inflationary economy. 
Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Unions secretary David Dzatsunga said they were now demanding US$840 for the least-paid civil servant. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200007205/demand-for-us-salaries-grows-louder">NewsDay</a> cites him as saying:
<blockquote>
It is the only way we can cushion workers from the rampant Zimbabwe dollar inflation. I believe that our position now stands at about US$840 for the lowest-paid worker if we are going to obtain a food basket. In our next round of meetings, we are going to press on for US$ salaries.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions’ secretary-general Japhet Moyo said employees now deserved to be paid in foreign currency to make ends meet. He said:

The economy has dollarised but workers are not getting US dollar salaries.
During the last round of negotiations which took place in December, government acknowledged that the economy was dollarising, hence agreeing to US$150 for the lowest-paid worker.
The talks ended in a deadlock as to how the US$ salaries should be implemented. The option was either government introduces a statutory instrument or the money is paid in the local currency, but equivalent to US$. Employers preferred the latter and this is where we are.

The Zimbabwe dollar which was re-introduced in February 2019, after being ditched for a decade, has been continuously shedding value against other currencies, particularly the USD.
The depreciation of the local currency has promoted the use of foreign currency.
Public sector workers have over the years asked the government to restore their pre-October 2018 salaries that werearound US$540 on average. The government has said it does not have enough forex to pay them that amount.

"Our Position Now Stands At About US$840 For The Lowest-paid Worker" - Union

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)</a> has threatened to boycott the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF) meetings next year, saying the body has failed to represent the interests of workers.
Efforts by unions to try and improve the welfare of workers in the country hit a brick wall as the government was not willing to pay a living wage or consider United States dollar salaries, NewsDay reported citing a 2022 end-of-year statement issued by president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Florence_Taruvinga">Florence Taruvinga</a> on Friday. Taruvinga said:

Government has failed the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF). The platform has not delivered to expectation and it is, therefore, our view that the TNF Act needs to be revisited for its decisions to be binding, not this arrangement where its decisions are subject to approval by Cabinet. We have already made it clear that come 2023, labour shall boycott TNF meetings if the other social partners continue to act in bad faith for selfish ends while sacrificing workers.
As you are aware, collective bargaining is our trump card as unions, but these have remained mere talk shows resulting in nothing. Our 2022 goal was for all workers to earn US dollar-denominated salaries and wages but the obtaining laws are militating against that. Our social partners are not negotiating in good faith at all negotiating platforms. For instance, to date, the government has not gazetted the recommended US$150 minimum wage for it to be effective. This clearly indicates a non–committal stance by government towards alleviating the plight of workers.

She said employers were exploiting that gap to pay low wages. Taruvinga added that employers are generally opting to pay allowances in forex while salaries remain fixed in local currency which means workers will have low pensions upon retirement, cannot access meaningful loans from banks, and afford medical and educational services.
She said many workers are living below the poverty datum line.

ZCTU Threatens To Boycott TNF Meetings In 2023, Cites Govt's "Insincerity"

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)</a> has said freedom of expression is under threat after Cabinet approved the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Amendment Bill 2022.
The bill will criminalise conduct deemed as unpatriotic or undermining Zimbabwe’s sovereignty after inserting clauses of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Patriotic_Bill">Patriotic Bill</a>.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, ZCTU said Zimbabwe does not need the bill. Read the statement:

<h2>SUBJECT: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION UNDER THREAT AS GOVERNMENT APPROVES PATRIOTIC BILL</h2>
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) notes with great concern and alarm that Cabinet has approved the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Amendment Bill 2022, that will impose stiff penalties to Zimbabweans who are alleged to be campaigning against perceived national interests.
The Statement by the government indicate that the Bill will criminalize any conduct that is deemed to undermine Zimbabwe’s sovereignty, dignity and national interest. The Bill effectively bars Zimbabwean from talking to foreign governments on the prevailing situation in the country. Even in our African tradition, when a father beats his children, the children can approach neighbours for mediation. Zimbabwe does not need this Bill and by approving this law, the Government is shooting itself in the foot as this will cement the widely held view that Zimbabwe is under authoritarian rule.
There is no doubt that this Bill will be used as a weapon against opponents of the government to clampdown on dissenting voices. The ZCTU believe that issues to do with patriotism should not be imposed on citizens and patriotism does not mean keeping quiet when there is bad governance. Noone has a right to prescribe to Zimbabweans what is and what is not patriotism.
With elections drawing closer, the ZCTU also believes this Bill is meant to instill fear to the society and Zimbabweans not to speak out on issues to do with violence, harassment and intimidation that have been a hallmark of our elections over the years. The Bill is a direct attack on democracy, freedom of expression and association. If it passed, it will confirm that indeed the government enjoys tightening its noose on Zimbabweans.
The ZCTU demands that legislators in Parliament reject the Bill and ensure that Zimbabweans’ right to freedom of expression and association, which are ar teed in our Constitution, are protected.

Freedom Of Expression Under Threat As Zimbabwe Approves The Patriotic Bill" - ZCTU

Over 89 000 Zimbabweans have been arrested and deported from South Africa for entering or staying in that country without proper documentation.
Peter Mutasa, former president of Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says this development could not have happened had Zimbabwe labour unions, civic society groups and human rights activists’ warnings to South Africa about Zimbabwe’s economic and political crisis had not been ignored.
Thousands of Zimbabweans flock into neighbouring South Africa and Botswana in search of jobs and better lives. Mutasa said:

We have been talking about these issues as labour, as human rights activists that SADC and AU have to take a progressive and practical position on Zimbabwe crisis, we have got a crisis. SADC has to resolve this crisis before it degenerates and now it has degenerated. So SADC, South Africa and other Africa countries have to agree that Zimbabwe has got crisis.
This problem has now caused humanitarian crisis it is not enough for South Africans to just push Zimbabweans back where they cannot get livelihoods and to where they can starve, 61 percent in here are food insecure so all those people are looking for food.

Political analyst Wurayayi Zembe says undocumented Zimbabweans flocking into South Africa is confirmation that the Emmerson Mnangagwa government has failed. He said:

That’s a symptom of the failure to govern ZANU PF government in Zimbabwe, it has been failing to provide Zimbabweans with jobs. Jobs are a basic need of Zimbabweans so that they can earn their legitimate lives.

Nearly 90 000 Zimbabweans Arrested And Deported From South Africa

Former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa said that the organisation will continue to resist capture by the ZANU PF-led government and the creation of a one-party state.
Mutasa was defeated by his deputy, Florence Taruvinga, a technician with the state-owned power utility Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), who garnered 73 votes against his 59 in recent elections held under controversial circumstances.
In a Twitter thread this Monday, Mutasa said he led the ZCTU during a difficult period under a military junta, in reference to the current government led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa which first came to power on the back of a military coup in November 2017.
Mutasa said it was not a surprise to him that the ruling ZANU PF party and presidential spokesperson George Charamba have been using their Twitter pages to denigrate him and celebrate his defeat. <a href="https://twitter.com/MutasaPeter/status/1455093247026634764">He wrote:</a>

It has been an honour leading the trade union movement Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions during a difficult period under a military junta.

The biggest danger we face is capture by a ruling party @ZANUPF_Official that aims to create a one-party state.

ZCTU Will Resist One-party State And Capture - Mutasa

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has claimed that there are men who are stalking Peter Mutasa, the leader of the labour movement.
ZCTU said the unidentified men attended the general conference running from the 27th to the 29th of October 2021. Said ZCTU in a statement:

These two people behind are trailing our president @MutasaPeter at our conference The other one lied that he is a trade unionist and the other says he is a policeman. We remain vigilant and will not allow harm towards our leader.

The congress that was officially opened by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Paul Mavima, is held as workers are expressing concern over poor salaries and poor working conditions. 
ZCTU has been pushing for the government to review workers’ salaries and improve conditions of service.
In 2019, ZCTU leaders, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/07/16/zctu-leaders-receive-mailed-bullets-and-warned-against-22-july-stay-away/">Mutasa and Secretary-General, Japhet Moyo received letters from unidentified people that had bullets in them.</a>
The letters were warning them not to organise a stay away on 22 July 2019. The letters threatened to kill the two and harm their families. 
The writers of the letters said they had “mercenaries to deal with you once and for all – unless you stop what you are planning”.

A 9-year-old learner at Mafuko Primary School in Gwanda district in Matabeleland South has lost a case in which she had dragged teachers to court seeking an order barring teachers in public schools from embarking on strike.
The minor Amohelang Ulukile Dube, who was being represented by her grandmother, Senzeni Nyathi, through her lawyers Ndove and Associates, filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court in Bulawayo.
The case has however been dismissed. Speaking on the outcome, the jubilant Takavafira Zhou, the President of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) said teachers also have rights. Pindula News presents Zhou’s statement on the matter.

In papers presented before the court, the pupil had cited the following as respondents: the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta), Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), the chairperson of the Public Service Commission, Dr Vincent Hungwe, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Professor Paul Mavima and Minister of Finance and Economic Development Professor Mthuli Ncube.
Teachers were planning to strike over poor salaries and working conditions.

Pupil Loses Case In Which She Dragged Teachers To Court Over Strike

A Wednesday meeting between the government and representatives of workers under the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) to discuss workers’ salaries failed to reach a consensus.
The meeting followed a two-week-long nationwide industrial action by health caregivers in pubic health institutions which was premised at compelling the government to review up their salaries.
Health workers are rejecting the government’s offer of a 50% salary increase and a US$75 monthly allowance for three months saying it is insignificant given the inflationary nature of the economy.
Speaking to NewsDay yesterday, a top anonymous government employee said:
<blockquote>The position of the civil servants is very clear, government is collecting taxes in US$, they collect duties in US$, but they don’t want to pay workers in the same.
Any salary adjustment in Zimbabwe dollar will not help us because before we even get the increase, prices will have increased leaving our salaries at the same place before the increase.</blockquote>
Recently, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) released a report for May noting that the annual inflation stood at 785,55% while the total consumption poverty datum line rose to above $8 000 for a household of five people when the majority of workers is earning less than $7000.
The president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, Peter Moyo yesterday reminded the government of its last year’s promise to ditch the local currency if it had failed to stabilise it.

Govt, Workers' Salary Meeting Reach Impasse

A Chinese national was on Monday arrested after he shot and injured two of his employees over a salary dispute.
Yesterday, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) demanded justice for the shot employees after reports had suggested that he was yet to be arrested.

WATCH: Chinese National Shooting Zimbabwean Employee In Gweru

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has demanded justice for two Zimbabwean workers who were reportedly shot and killed by their Chinese employers in Gweru.
The alleged tragedy was reported by MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson in the Youth Assembly, Womberai Nhende who posted on Twitter on the 21st of June 2020 saying they were shot over a salary dispute. He said:
<blockquote>A chinese national has shot and injured two natives in Gweru over a salary dispute. And no arrest has been made.

It is not clear as to when the incident happened. Responding to the post, ZCTU said:
<blockquote>The government has sold the country to China. Now the Chinese do as they pleased &amp; illtreat Zimbabwean workers in our own country because they know we have no protection from the government. The liberators have turned our good country into a predator state. <a class="link-complex" href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23justiceforworkers" rel="hashtag noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#justiceforworkers</a></blockquote>
There have been numerous reports of abuse of workers by Chinese employers in the country with some workers reportedly working in unsafe working environments and unsafe conditions.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) has called upon the government to pay a US$100 cushion to “vulnerable” workers during the national lockdown.
Basing on the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat)’s 2019 Labour Force And Child Labour Survey report released last month, ZCTU asserts that 98% of the country’s 14,2 million citizens were vulnerable to direct and indirect shocks of COVID-19.
The union’s proposal means that the government needs US$276 379 900 or nearly $7 billion to pay a US$100 cushion to about 95,4% of the employed population. ZCTU said:
<blockquote>Given the rise in urban poverty and the fact that urban citizens pay for almost all services (rentals, water, electricity, etc) as compared to rural households, it may be prudent to remember this dimension as government seeks to mitigate the impact of Covid-19, including the lockdown.
Additionally, the government should expedite addressing mealie-meal shortages in the suburbs in order to avoid long queues which can be a potential for the spread of COVID-19 infections. There have been unjustified price increases of basic commodities further deepening the suffering of citizens.</blockquote>
The government has currently set aside $600 million which translate to 200 Zimbabwe dollars or US$8 for each of the one million vulnerable workers over the next three months.

ZCTU Calls Upon Govt To Pay US$100 Cushion To Vulnerable Employees During Lockdown

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), a labour organisation, has claimed that the Tripartite Negotiating Forum Bill is their victory. The bill among other things outlaws stay-aways or strikes by workers before exhausting negotiation channels with government and other stakeholders.

<div>The bill comes at a time when several workers groups have threatened to protest against the state of affairs. A January ZCTU stay-away degenerated into chaos as military personnel shot and killed several civilians. Properties were also lost as participants in the demonstration looted and torched some infrastructures.</div>

FULL TEXT: ZCTU Claims The Criticised TNF Bill Is Their Victory

NewsDay editorial bemoans the lack of unity amongst labour organisations in the country at the moment.
This comes after the ZIMTA has indicated that it was pulling out of the workers’ union citing leadership involvement in politics. There are also indications that there are some members of the ZCTU that might also quit the labour movement.
The editorial observes that although great national leaders came out of labour unions, it is absurd for the ZCTU to be involved in politics. It notes:
<blockquote>The ZCTU has remained relevant and important to the country thus far simply because it has maintained a non-partisan stance, which is why people like the late Morgan Richard Tsvangirai had to leave the organisation to form the Movement for Democratic Change. Similarly, Father Zimbabwe — as Nkomo was affectionately known, had to relinquish his trade union leadership in the then Rhodesia Railways Workers Union to form the National Democratic Party in 1960.</blockquote>
<div class="code-block code-block-3">It also notes that a number of unions that were formed to champion interests of some political parties and they failed to see the light of the day.</div>
<div>The editorial went further to point out that labour issues currently facing the country demand a united and solid ZCTU. Workers receive unsustainable salaries which are further eroded by inflation.</div>
The editorial believes that now is the best time to be united for the common goal of championing the interests of the labour.

Labor Unions Must Be Uniting Right Now

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has called upon stakeholders to engage in a national social dialogue meant to address issues grounding Zimbabwe.
Speaking on Monday at the tripartite seminar on “promoting and reinforcing social dialogue in Zimbabwe”, ZCTU president Peter Mutasa said:
<blockquote>We therefore note as labour that national social dialogue is of extreme importance and has a strategic dimension in that deepening consultation between social partners builds consensus on broad issues. This includes currency options that should enable Zimbabwe to navigate this treacherous terrain and crises in a balanced and inclusive way that promotes social justice, fairness and equity.</blockquote>
Mutasa also said that a national dialogue was consistent with the national constitution and other international statutes the country has acceded to. He added:
<blockquote>Continued violation of rights enshrined in the Constitution, bickering, name-calling, animosity and polarisation will only serve to sink this country deeper into crisis and the abyss, further impoverishing the working people we represent. We therefore stand here as labour to re-affirm our commitment to the founding principles and values of social dialogue espoused in our frameworks negotiated in the TNF, and especially the Declaration of Intent and the Kadoma Declaration.</blockquote>

ZCTU Calls For National Social Dialogue As Crises Worsen

Spokesperson of the Nelson Chamisa led MDC-T, Jacob Mafume told the Daily News yesterday that his party will join the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) in protesting against the deteriorating economic conditions in Zimbabwe.
Mafume said the resolution was made during the MDC’s urgent national executive committee meeting that was held at the party headquarters in Harare yesterday. Said Mafume:
<blockquote>It was resolved by the national executive that we should show that we are with the people during this tough time, so we must join them in demonstrating against a government that is clearly clueless on how they can extricate the country out of the economic quagmire. People have come to a point where they are saying enough is enough, hence the ZCTU action which we commend and will complement very soon after we meet all the stakeholders to come up with a convenient date. We have also been consulting our structures and they have signalled that they have had enough so we will stand with them in solidarity as dictated by the Constitution which provides for the right to demonstrate.</blockquote>

Chamisa's MDC To Join ZCTU Protests

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has warned that a number of Zimbabweans are suffering from mental illness due to the non-payment of wages and salaries. Speaking at commemorations to mark World Day for Safety and Health at Work, ZCTU Vice President, Florence Taruvinga said,
<blockquote>The other challenge concerns the workers’ wages and salaries which we have termed as Wage theft. The current scenario in Zimbabwe is so disturbing because workers are now subjected to mental health and psychosocial challenges,…The current lost time injury frequency rate of 3 is not anything to smile at; rather we need to work hard as Social Partners to ensure that we bring it down to globally acceptable levels of less than 1.</blockquote>
