Four men who were acquitted in the ZB Bank US$2.7 million cash heist case were arraigned before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa on Friday facing money laundering charges, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200018373/zb-bank-us2-7m-heist-suspects-charged-with-money-laundering">NewsDay</a>.
The four suspects namely Tozivepi Chirara, Tatenda Gadzikwa, Dennis Madondo and Trymore Chapfika were acquitted by the court recently but the other three accused were convicted.
On 05 January 2021, cash amounting to US$2 775 000 was stolen from a ZB bank crew which was transporting the cash from Harare to Chinhoyi.
Prosecutors alleged that during the period extending from 05 to 11 January 2021, following the ZB Bank heist, Chirara acquired a Subaru Forester vehicle and upon his arrest on January 11, he had in his possession cash amounting to US$77 800.
Chirara allegedly failed to give a satisfactory explanation as to where he acquired the cash.
The court heard that Chirara was not formally employed and had no other business to justify the huge amount of money found in his possession.
Chapfika who stays in Mbare was allegedly found with US$39 000 and he was not gainfully employed, while Madondo had US$71 500 in his possession.
According to the State, when Gadzikwa was arrested, he had US$81 800 in his possession.
The four men will be back in court on Monday.
Shadreck Njowa, Tendai Zuze and Neverson Mwamuka were found guilty of having stolen the US$2.7 million cash from ZB Bank and are now serving an effective eight-year jail term each.

Four Suspects Acquitted In ZB Bank US$2. 7 Million Heist Case Charged With Money Laundering

A Harare court heard that some of the US$2.7 million stolen in the armed robbery of a cash-in-transit truck transporting ZB Bank cash from Harare to Chinhoyi, was used to buy cars for a self-proclaimed prophet in appreciation.
The robbery occurred in January 2021 at the Gwebi River Bridge along Harare-Chirundu Road.
The prophet, John Karembera, testified that he received two vehicles as a gift for assisting a person referred to him by one of the suspects, Tendai Zuze. The preacher claims he was unaware that the vehicles were bought using proceeds from the robbery. He said:

The second accused (Zuze) summoned me and told me that someone had a surprise for me in the form of a car. I drove from Mutare and he directed me to go to a car sale in Mbare.
There was a Hino Truck Dutro and a Toyota Dyna Truck both white in colour.
When I was back in Mutare I received a phone call from the police who told me that they were conducting some investigations.
I surrendered the cars at Mutare CID. I can’t really remember the exact date, but I collected them around January 2021.
The police called me after about 3 or 4 days. I don’t know the relationship between the 2nd accused (Zuze) and Moreblessing Mushore who was said to be the one who had purchased the vehicles for me, but I used to pray for her when she was referred to me for prayers.
When I surrendered the cars, the police told me that they would give me them back after they finished their investigations, but I have not gotten them yet.
I am waiting for my cars. I believe that I will get them since I came to testify today.

The State asked for a postponement to allow the suspects’ lawyers to inspect the next exhibit. The hearing will continue on May 16.
In January 2021, ZB Bank’s internal security officer, Shadreck Njowa, and other suspects allegedly plotted to rob a cash-in-transit truck carrying US$2,775,000. One of the crew members, Fanuel Musakwa, communicated with the suspects about their location while en route to distribute the money at various ZB Bank branches. Three hitchhikers were picked up, and at the 60km mark, they produced a pistol and threatened the crew. More accomplices arrived in another vehicle with pistols, and they offloaded the boxes of cash and fled the scene.

Part Of US$2.7 Million Cash-in-transit Robbery Money Bought Cars For Prophet

The alleged mastermind of the ZB Bank heist, where US$2.7 million and $43,000 were stolen in January 2021 at <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Gwebi River Bridge</a>, has been arrested in Harare after evading authorities for almost two years.
Shadreck Njowa was apprehended in Highfield, where he had been hiding, and is now in custody, assisting with investigations.
Detectives from the CID Homicide unit in Harare received information on Njowa’s whereabouts from a former residence and conducted a raid that led to his arrest.

The local <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">financial institution</a> recently offered a US$5 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Shadreck Njowa and his two accomplices, Patson Matengambiri and Nyasha Chitera.
The robbery was suspected to be an inside job, with three security personnel in the vehicle allegedly colluding with the robbers. The three security staff, Nomatter Jonga, Mathew Simango, and Fanuel Musakwa, were arrested and have already appeared in court. The trio, along with 11 other gang members, are still awaiting trial.
