An 81-year-old man from Tsholotsho District who returned to Zimbabwe from South Africa for the first time since 1962, may have located his daughter whom he left while she was in Grade One, reported the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/has-the-gone-for-60-years-man-really-found-his-relatives-daughter-shows-up/">Chronicle</a>.
Last week, Phillip Moyo pleaded for assistance, through the media, to be assisted in finding his family members whom he hardly remembers as he left the country way before the onset of the Second Chimurenga which ushered in the country’s independence.
The name of his then-girlfriend and the mother of his child had faded from his memory.
Speaking to The Sunday News at Mpilo Central Hospital where he is admitted, Moyo, although incoherent in some of his statements, said he is from Tsholotsho District and has had a visitor who claims to be his daughter. He said:
<blockquote>
They came and went (visitors). Mina angisabakhumbuli kodwa bona bayangikhumbula (I do not remember them, but they remember me). I am very happy that I found someone who knows me, living like a criminal is not good.
</blockquote>
A woman is said to have visited Moyo on Saturday, 30 December, claiming to be his daughter.
The woman is said to have had a conversation with Moyo where they both remembered one common person, however, she said she would bring in more relatives.
Contacted for verification by the Chronicle, the woman whose mobile number is registered under the name Sikhonzile Moyo, said she was his daughter. She said:

I am his child, but now I am on my way back home to the farms, I will be back to see him again. I will contact you when I get home and we talk.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Moyo said he regrets his “selfish move” to South Africa that forced him to abandon his family, friends, and relatives. He said:
<blockquote>
When we enjoy life we must not forget others, the things that we men do are not good, and we must stop this behaviour (of abandoning families).
Look at me now (touching his frail and aged body). It is so hard, people must not go for good.

Alderman Phineas Ndlovu, a former Bulawayo councillor who hails from Tsholotsho, visited Moyo at Mpilo Central Hospital. He said:
<blockquote>
With the way he described himself, I realised I knew his father and the area he was talking about, which is our home area in Nemane.
So, I asked him where exactly he was born and he said in Nemane and he is the son of Saka, usaMajahaqatha. Saka is a Sibanda, I know Saka, although I have forgotten his real name.
I told him of the Tshavani people, he is a brother to Saka and my sister is married to the Tshabani people.
When I enquired, I heard those people were no longer there, where would Khulu go? I am, however, told he has a child who was in Kwekwe who came this morning (Saturday).
They spoke and she is said to have agreed that the information said is fairly correct regarding Khulu and her mother. However, she said she could not prove that he was indeed her father.

Ald Ndlovu described the setting of the homesteads of Namane in Tsholotsho where he and Moyo come from. He said:
<blockquote>
I know this man’s family, our elders lived together, Saka saMajahaqatha homestead was there, followed by Khakha’s, Mlobiseni, Duli, Tholo, Ndayile, ours, the Dima’s was on one end.
There is also Nemane School close by, so we know each other well. Khulu may not know me because he says he has been gone 61 years in Johannesburg, he put it right, when we grew up there was a trek to Johannesburg where he had gone.
I am 73 years old now, he is older than me, at 81. But his father Saka, angimbuzi emuntwini ngiyamazi, lakhathesi ungathi ngiyekutshengisa umuzi kaSaka ngingayakutshengisa ukuthi wawu la.
I heard there is a young sister of Khulu Moyo who is married and may not be in a position to take him in. He needs to be bathed, clothed and cared for, who will do that?
Unless someone is touched by the Holy Spirit, then he can find a place to stay. He is now Government property.
</blockquote>
Ald Ndlovu said following some consultations, he is trying to contact Headman Ngwizi back in Tsholotsho as he understands they are somewhat related to Moyo and wants him to find any information from that end and assist.
Moyo said he was grateful for the help he had received so far. He was adamant he would not return to South Africa but visit Tsholotsho to check on others.

Back To Zimbabwe After 60 Years Tsholotsho Man Reunited With "Daughter"

Tshiamiso Trust has set aside a provisional compensation pool of R5 billion for ex-Wenela workers, including at least 1,000 Zimbabweans, who contracted silicosis and tuberculosis from South African gold mines. The workers will receive payments ranging from R10,000 to R500,000 per person.
The trust is responsible for handling the compensation process and is currently involved in discussions to ensure full operationalisation of the payment process. The compensation is applicable to employees who carried out risky work at qualifying mines and were diagnosed with silicosis before December 2021, or those who contracted tuberculosis while working at the mines or within a year of leaving the mines. Claimants would need to lodge a claim with the trust at one of its lodgement offices. Each claim will be assessed individually, and the amount a claimant receives depends on the class that he/she is certified for, the period worked at a qualifying mine, the risk level of the work, and the severity of the lung impairment due to silicosis or work-related TB. The trust is considering workers who were employed by various mining companies, including Anglo-American South Africa and Sibanye-Stillwater.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/r5-billion-for-ex-wenela-payouts">The Sunday Mail</a>, Tshiamiso Trust executive for stakeholder relations and communications Ms Lusanda Jiya said:

The settling parties agreed to an amount of R5 billion. This amount is uncapped; the settling parties agreed to pay beyond the R5 billion if the trust finds more eligible claimants.
 Our database shows that there are over 1 000 potential claimants in Zimbabwe.
We see that there is a possibility of getting more than 1 000 potential claimants, and we are projecting that we might get any figure between 1 500 and 2 000.
This means the total amount that will be disbursed to Zimbabwe cannot be specified until we get the exact number of those who passed our vetting process.
Once the operational framework is in place, the funds will be disbursed accordingly.

Tshiamiso Trust is waiting for government approval to compensate ex-Wenela workers, including those from Zimbabwe, who contracted silicosis and tuberculosis while working in South African gold mines. The trust is considering workers who were employed by African Rainbow Minerals, Anglo American South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold and Sibanye-Stillwater. As of March, Tshiamiso Trust had paid over R1 billion for more than 11,000 claims from ex-workers from other countries.
The compensation was long overdue, according to Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Permanent Secretary Mr Simon Masanga.
During the gold rush era, thousands of Zimbabweans went to South Africa and contracted respiratory diseases due to poor ventilation in the mines.

Tshiamiso Trust Raises R5 Billion To Compensate Ex-Wenela Workers

Ex-Wenela workers will start receiving payments ranging from R10 000 to R50 000 per individual in compensation early next year.
This was said by a Tshiamiso Trust delegation that was sent to Zimbabwe last week.
Tshiamiso Trust was set up after ex-Wenela workers won a class-action lawsuit in the South African High Court in July 2019 to handle the compensation process.
Tshiamiso Trust chief operating officer Tina da Cruz told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/ex-wenela-payments-set-for-early-next-year">The Sunday Mail</a> that each beneficiary will be paid depending on the level at which he or she had suffered from respiratory diseases. Said, Cruz:

We are delighted to be here for a positive engagement with the Government of Zimbabwe and other stakeholders.
We managed to develop a roadmap that we look forward to implementing. We are expecting that shortly, within the early next calendar year, it will be fully operationalised and will be receiving applications and processing the claims of deserving claimants.
</blockquote>
The Trust said that it is considering workers who were employed by African Rainbow Minerals, Anglo American South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold and Sibanye-Stillwater.
The compensation is applicable to employees who carried out risky work at the mines between March 12, 1965 and December 10, 2019, and were diagnosed with silicosis before December 2021.
Workers who contracted tuberculosis while working at the mines, or within a year of leaving the mines are also entitled to receive compensation.
Tshiamiso Trust has paid over R930 million to more than 10 000 claims from ex-workers.
Zimbabwe’s Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Permanent Secretary Simon Masanga said:
<blockquote>
We have a database of at least 4 000 ex-Wenela mine workers who will be subject to vetting before receiving compensation.
The Government is going to set up an online registration platform, which will enable all ex-Wenela workers to register.
As Government, we are now appealing to all these ex-workers wherever they are to start compiling all the necessary documents to prove that they worked for these companies.
Affidavits are not considered as evidence in this process. Contractual documents, if they are present, will be crucial.
A mobile clinic will be available to carry out tests that will ascertain who will be benefiting.

Ex-Wenela Miners Association of Zimbabwe national spokesperson Newman Machinga said:
<blockquote>
As an association, we are pleased with the development. We hope everyone who is entitled to the payments is going to benefit. We have been pushing for a long time to achieve this.
</blockquote>
Ex-Wenela Miners Association of Zimbabwe chairman Rodgers Munakamwe said:
<blockquote>
We have spent the last 42 years trying to track down unpaid pension dues deducted from their wages without their knowledge and consent.
Painful memories of labour injustices perpetrated against them are still fresh in their minds and a majority of the ex-miners contracted chronic diseases in the South African mines.
It’s sad that 25 percent of the ex-miners lost their lives due to a lack of money to seek medical attention.

"Payments For Ex-Wenela Workers Set For Early 2023"

The government has warned members of the public and former mineworkers who worked in South Africa’s gold mines under the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (WENELA), that there are individuals and organisations claiming to be Government Officials or agencies for the registration of the former mineworkers for a fee.
This follows reports that the government has started engaging South Africa to facilitate the compensation of ex Wenela workers who contracted respiratory diseases while working in South Africa.
In a statement Tuesday, the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare said the registration and testing of Ex-Wenela mine workers are being undertaken FREE OF CHARGE by Government and NSSA.
The Ministry also said the dates and venues for the registration of the former mineworkers will be officially announced through the various media platforms. The statement read:

BOGUS AND CRIMINAL ELEMENTS MISREPRESENTING THEMSELVES AS GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS DEMANDING PAYMENT FOR THE REGISTRATION OF EX-WENELA MINE WORKERS
The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare wishes to advise the general public and Ex-Wenela mine workers in particular that there are individuals and organisations misrepresenting themselves as Government Officials or agencies for the registration of Ex Wenela mine workers.
These individuals/organisations are demanding payment for the registration of the Ex-Wenela mine workers.
The Ministry would like to inform members of the general public that it has not engaged any individuals or agencies for registration and testing of Ex-Wenela mine workers.
For the avoidance of doubt, the registration and testing of Ex-Wenela mine workers is being undertaken FREE OF CHARGE by Government and NSSA.
The Officials will have positive identification at venues on dates to be announced through the media.
The mobile registration and testing of the Ex-Wenela mine workers are being undertaken in phases in all ten (10) provinces of the country.
The public is advised that the dates and venues will be officially announced through the various media platforms.
Members of the public are advised to report such bogus and criminal elements to the nearest police station.
